Abstrct Microalgae are capable of removing various organic pollutants through their inherent processes of growth, reproduction and biological metabolism. In present study, a microalgae-based fuel cell was constructed using Chlorella sp. SI-50, significantly improving the removal efficiency of the antiviral ribavirin (RBV) from wastewater. Compared with conventional microalgal systems, which typically achieve only 70% removal of RBV within 18 days, the present system achieved complete elimination (100%) of 5 mg/L RBV by day 6. Furthermore, the microalgal antioxidant enzyme system exhibited outstanding antioxidant activity, which was attributed to oxidative stress from microcurrent and electron transfer. Transcriptomic analysis screened phosphotransferase and nucleotide transferase as key enzymes involved in RBV biodegradation. These enzymes participate in purine/pyrimidine metabolism and xenobiotic detoxification, potentially catalyzing RBV oxidation and conjugation. This work highlights that microalgal electrochemical systems efficiently enhance the remediation of antiviral contaminants and reveal core molecular mechanisms underlying RBV metabolism, providing a promising eco-friendly strategy for the treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater.

Oily sewage discharged from ships has brought many harms to the marine environment, even endangered marine life and human life. As a new type of water treatment technology, microbial fuel cell (MFC) can efficiently treat pollutants and recover energy, which can be converted into electric energy. However, its large internal resistance restricts its development. In order to solve the problems of low power generation performance and poor biocompatibility of microbial fuel cell, a gold nanoparticle-carbon quantum dot/polydopamine/graphene oxide/bacterial cellulose (AuNP-CQD/PDA/GO/BC) electrode was prepared, and it was applied to the treatment of oily sewage from ships. Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and contact angle measuring instrument were used to characterize the electrode. The results show that PDA bridges GO and AuNP-CQD particles through the electrostatic interaction/π-π bond/hydrogen bonding, respectively. This attracts a large number of microorganisms to attach to the surface of the porous anode material, which greatly improves the activity and quantity of microorganisms. Moreover, the maximum power density of AuNP-CQD/PDA/GO/BC electrode is 2624.91 mW/m 2 , which obviously improves the electrochemical performance of MFC. The oil content of the treated water is ≤ 15 mg/L, reaching the discharge of MARPOL 73/78 convention. Therefore, the proposed approach has paved new dimensions in not only the preparation of a new composite electrode materials but also its applications as effective degradation of ship oily sewage in MFC.

Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) air pollutants could worsen air quality and adversely affect human health, thus developing more efficient low-temperature VOCs removal techniques is desired. A novel continuous system integrating UV-assisted photo-electrochemical catalysis with microbial fuel cell (UV-assisted PEC-MFC) has been established for promoting removal of gaseous ethyl acetate or toluene and generating electricity simultaneously. In this system, CeO 2 /TiO 2 /ACF catalytic cathode is prepared and used for combination with bio-anode for accelerating cathodic reaction . This UV-assisted PEC-MFC system exhibits an excellent elimination capacity (EC) of ethyl acetate (∼0.39 g/m 3 , EC: ∼2.52 g/m 3 /h) or toluene (∼0.29 g/m 3 , EC: 1.89 g/m 3 /h) under close-circuit condition. Furthermore, an outstanding elimination capacity (EC: 28.04 g/m 3 /h) for high concentration toluene (∼4.10 g/m 3 ) removal is obtained after toluene gas passes sequentially through the catalytic cathode then the bio-anode. This way of PEC degradation and biodegradation, avoids inhibition of exoelectrogens activity from toxicity of high concentration toluene. Simultaneously, the cell voltage of UV-assisted PEC-MFC system is stable at 0.11 V (vs. SCE) and 1.452×10 −4 kWh is generated from treatment of toluene gas stream in 6 h duration time. The possible mechanism of VOCs removal in this novel system has been proposed and discussed. This study provides new technical basis for treating gaseous pollutants via integrating photo-electrochemical catalysis with electricity generating microbial fuel cell for energy conversion.

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) constitute a group of compounds that are challenging to break down and potentially pose risks to both ecosystems and human health when they accumulate in water bodies. This study established and operated small-scale constructed wetland–microbial fuel cells (CW-MFCs) continuously for 60 days, maintaining a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3 days. The research aimed to assess the treatment efficiency of wastewater containing Ibuprofen (IBP) and Diclofenac (DCF) using different co-substrates (glucose, sucrose, and sodium acetate) and to analyze the impact of these co-substrates on the composition of bacterial communities within the CW-MFC. After 60 days of operation, CW-MFC achieved removal rates of 89.29% for IBP and 84.10% for DCF. The elimination of IBP was primarily dependent on co-metabolic degradation processes occurring in both the anode and cathode, while DCF removal relied on anodic co-metabolism. Additionally, various co-substrates have an influence on the bacterial community diversity of the anode and cathodes. The possible bacterial groups involved in PPCP degradation were identified. In summary, Glu was identified as a more suitable co-substrate for CW-MFC in the removal of IBP and DCF, while SA as a co-substrate favored the induction and enrichment of EAB in the anodes. These findings offer valuable insights into the potential of CW-MFC for mitigating emerging contaminants. Keywords:constructed wetlands;constructed wetland–microbial fuel cells;PPCPs;co-metabolic;Ibuprofen;diclofenac

Bio-electro-Fenton powered by microbial fuel cell (MFC-powered BEF) can in-situ generate and utilize hydrogen peroxide to degrade refractory pollutants. Most of the previous works loaded transition metal on the cathode to participate in the Fenton reaction showed limited electrical or degradation performance. The coupling of alkaline-earth metal (Mg 0 and MgO) and transition metal on cathode could improve the electrochemical and catalytic properties of MFC-powered BEF system, which had not been reported so far. In this research, a novel cathode of Fe–Mn–Mg/carbon fiber (Fe–Mn–Mg/CF) was developed with good polymerization effect of Mg to Fe and Mn, and outstanding production of reactive oxide species (•OH and •O 2 − ), which further improved the overall electricity generation efficiency and enhanced the degradation of pollutants. Accordingly, the maximum power density generated in MFC-powered BEF system with Fe–Mn–Mg/CF cathode was 2.07 times higher than that of the frequently used Fe–Mn/CF. Owing to the superiority of surface holes and MgO in H + adsorption and electron transfer , the integration of Fe, Mn with Mg promoted the in-situ generation of H 2 O 2 and active radicals, resulting in the highest catalytic performance of degrading refractory pollutants . Initial pH, external resistance, initial concentration of contaminant and cycle use frequency of cathode were also evaluated on the degradation efficiency of the BEF system. Furthermore, reaction and degradation mechanisms were proposed from H 2 O 2 production and free radical characterization. Overall, this study provided a novel cathode preparation approach for the MFC-powered BEF system, which vastly promoted its electrochemical and catalytic properties.

To address microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) separator shortcomings in lithium-ion flux homogenization and dendrite growth due to uneven ion distribution, this study developed a UiO-66-MFC composite separator with 20-30% loading. The hierarchical pores (0.8-1.2 nm micropores and 2-50 nm mesopores) enable selective Li + screening and rapid transport, while MFC's hydroxyl groups form hydrogen bonds with amino groups of UiO-66-NH 2 , enhancing mechanical strength to 16 MPa at a 20% loading. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal a strong interaction between -NH 2 and PF 6 - , with a binding energy reaching -8.622 keV. This interaction effectively restricts the migration of PF 6 - , promotes the desolvation process of lithium salts, accelerates Li⁺ transport, and fosters more uniform lithium deposition behavior. The electrochemical test results indicate that the 20% UiO-66-NH 2 /MFC separator demonstrates the most favorable overall performance. After cycling for 1000 h at a current density of 1 mA cm -2 , the overpotential of the Li/Li symmetrical battery remains stable at ± 0.10 V, suggesting effective inhibition of lithium dendrite growth. When paired with the LiFePO 4 cathode, the battery exhibits a capacity retention rate exceeding 90% after 100 cycles, while the coulombic efficiency approaches 100%. This study significantly improves the ion conduction and interface stability of the separator by optimizing the MOF ratio, thereby offering a novel strategy for the material design of high-safety and long-life lithium-ion batteries. This MOF-incorporated MFC strategy significantly enhances separator ion conduction and stability, offering a novel approach for safe, long-life lithium-ion batteries.

In this study, a microbial fuel cell powered electro-Fenton system (MFCⓅEFs) was established in order to overcome the shortcomings of low electron flux and unexpected methane production, while simultaneously treating excess sludge (ES, substrate) and refractory syringic acid (SA). A strategy of co-adding lysozyme (LZ, as ES degradation catalyst) and 2-bromoethanesulfonate (BES, as methane inhibitor) into ES was optimized in MFCⓅEFs to maximize electron flux, microbial community diversity and functional gene abundance. The removal of sludge total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) achieved 81.69% in 25 d under an optimal co-addition strategy (40.41 mg/gSS of LZ, 27.03 mmol/L of BES, adding on 22.8 h of the7th day), with a simultaneous high degradation of SA (99.30% in 25 h). Correspondingly, a maximum power density of 3.35 W/m 3 was achieved (only 0.62 W/m 3 from the control), which effectively realizes in-situ micro-electricity generation and utilization for bioelectric Fenton processes. Moreover, 42.25% of the total charges were employed for bio-electricity generation. The electricigens of Pseudomonas , Acinetobacter and Chlorobium showed effective enrichment, while the abundance of methanogenesis archaea was extremely decreased. Functional genes associated with methanogenesis including mtaA, hdra, and mcrA were effectively inhibited. The life cycle assessment along with an optimized co-addition strategy illustrated a beneficial environmental effect , particularly in terms of ecosystem quality and climate change. Above all, an enhanced synchronous degradation of excess sludge and refractory pollutants had been realized in a green and environmentally friendly way.

l -Threonine and three kinds of conductive polymers were applied for anode modification in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for decolorization of Congo red with simultaneous electricity generation. The description of modified anodes with FTIR, surface contact angle, and CV analysis showed that the anode surface was successfully grafted with functional groups, with improving wettability, as well as the increasing specific surface area and electrochemical activity. For l -threonine modification, the highest decolorization rate of 97% of the MFC, and meanwhile, the maximum current density of 155.8 mA/m 2 , was obtained at the modified concentration of 400 mg/L. For conductive polymer modifications, the poly (aniline-1,8-diaminonaphthalene) (short for PANDAN) owned the highest performance, with the current density 185 mA/m 2 , and the decolorization rate was 97%. Compared with l -threonine, the modifications by conductive polymers were more suitable for MFC decolorization due to their functional groups and unique conductivity. In addition, high-throughput sequencing analysis was conducted for the conductive polymers modified anodes to reveal their bioelectrochemical mechanisms.

To enhance simultaneous bioelectrochemical treatment of excess sludge and refractory wastewater, a microbial fuel cell powered electro-Fenton system (MFCⓅEFs) with the co-addition of lysozyme (LZ) and 2-bromoethane sulfonate (BES) into sludge was set up and an in-depth investigation of pollutants degradation , micro-electricity utilization, microbial communities and functional genes was conducted. Experimental results showed a maximum sludge total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) removal achieved 80.21 % in 25 d with co-addition of 50 mg/gSS LZ and 25 mmol/L BES in anodic chamber of MFCⓅEFs, while the degradation of syringic acid (SA) as a model refractory pollutant reached 97.42 % in cathodic chamber within 25 h, and obtained a 3.35 W/m 3 maximum power density. The quantification of micro-electricity utilization revealed that sludge hydrolysis enhanced by LZ could reduce electricity sink, and methanogenesis inhibited by BES could ensure more electrons to be used for exoelectrogenesis. The co-addition of LZ + BES resulted in an increased abundance of exoelectrogens ( Pseudomonas , Bacteriodetes, and Chlorobium ) and a decreased major methanogenic group by inhibiting gene-function of coenzyme-M. The columbic efficiency of the MFCⓅEFs with co-addition of LZ + BES was increased to 8.31 % (only 4.22 % for control). The complete mineralization of SA in MFCⓅEFs was ascribed to the high generation rates of hydrogen peroxide and free radicals. The results provided a new insight to use in-situ generated micro-electricity from MFCⓅEFs to realize simultaneous treatment of excess sludge and residual refractory pollutant in the secondary effluent of wastewater treatment plant .

Management of Penicillium digitatum requires use of highly effective fungicides that are not prone to drug resistance and are safe to humans and the environment. This study examined the fungicidal potential of combinations of cuminaldehyde (CA) + trans-2-hexen-1-al (TH) and CA + Citral. Both CA + TH and CA + Citral exhibited enhanced fungitoxicity against P. digitatum than CA, citral or TH alone. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of CA + Citral consisted of 0.13 ml/L CA and 0.3 ml/L citral, representing a synergistic interaction. MIC of CA + TH consisted of 0.12 ml/L CA and 0.15 ml/L TH, representing an additive interaction. The minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of CA + Citral and of CA + TH consisted of 0.26 ml/L CA and 0.6 ml/L citral, and 0.18 ml/L CA and 0.24 ml/L TH, respectively. 10×MFC CA + Citral in Tween-80 (WCI) delayed onset of hyphal growth in fruits inoculated with P. digitatum to day 5 compared to day 4 in the 10×MFC CA + TH in Tween-80 (WCT) treatment, and day 3 for the control samples. Daily green mold disease incidence and disease severity were much lower in WCI and WCT treatments than in the 10×MFC CA in Tween-80 (WCA) treatment and in control samples. Our results show that WCI was much fungitoxic against P. digitatum than WCT and WCA, its effect being comparable to that of imazalil. Additionally, at 25 ± 2 °C and 85–90% relative humidity, both WCI and WCT markedly preserved fruit quality by day 6 of treatment. WCI and WCT are thus, safe, cheap and highly effective alternatives to chemical fungicides being used to control postharvest green mold in citrus fruits.

To increase effluent quality and membrane flux , membrane bioreactor was integrated with microbial fuel cell (MBR/MFC), in which functional cathode membranes could enable fouling reduction and even electro-catalytic pollutant degradation using the bio-generated electricity. Modifying stainless steel mesh (SSM) with only polypyrrole (PPy) or cheap ARS (Alizarin Red's) or expensive AQS (9,10-anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid) doped PPy film, helped obtain high ORR (oxygen reduction reaction) activity and higher power output in the integrated MBR/MFC system. The ARS and PPy modified cathode membranes, could not only increase the degradation of (MB) methylene blue (> 90%, 1 h), but also enable higher antifouling property in filtrations. Most importantly, replacing the blank SSM, the use of PPy/AQS, PPy/ARS and PPy modified SSM, increased power density 31.37, 27.06 and 23.7 times respectively in the integrated MBR/MFC system. The new system has great application potential and economic feasibility in effective removal of COD and NH 4 + -N nutrients, has better effluent qualities and has higher energy recovery.

Using the flat module membrane electrodes based on polyester filter modified with polyaniline (PANI)–phytic acid (PA), a new type of membrane bio-reactor (MBR) system is developed for both bio-electrochemical electricity generation and effluent filtration. A specifically prepared carbon foam–Fe–Co catalyst was coated on the conductive, filterable cathode membrane which makes it catalytic for enhancing cathodic oxygen reduction reaction and electricity generation. The cell voltage (with carbon foam–Fe–Co, 0.5–0.4 V) is superior to control test 1 (without any catalyst, 0.2 V), moreover, it is even better than control test 2 (with Pt–C catalyst, 0.5–0.3 V). The corresponding maximum power density of carbon foam–Fe–Co is 38.5 and 2.4 times higher than control test 1 and 2, respectively. More importantly, the base electrode materials and catalyst were both low-cost. The overall removal efficiency of COD and NH4+–N are satisfactory, at 95% ± 2.5% and 85% ± 2.5%, respectively. This integrated system is easy to scale up for practical application in waste-water treatment and offers a better option in operating and coupling MBR with bio-electricity generation.
