Magnetic MFe2O4-Ag2O (M = Zn, Co, & Ni) composite photocatalysts and their application for dye wastewater treatment

Fujin Sun,Qihui Zeng,Wen Tian,Yingming Zhu,Wei Jiang

Silver oxide is a high-performance visible-light-driven nanoparticle photocatalyst. However, its high cost and difficult recovery limit its wide application. Constructing a magnetic composite is a smart strategy to effectively utilize nanoparticle photocatalysts with acceptable performance maintenance. In this study, three magnetic ferrite supports, that is, CoFe 2 O 4 , ZnFe 2 O 4 , and NiFe 2 O 4 , were used as support to load Ag 2 O and construct Ag 2 O/MFe 2 O 4 composites to lower the Ag consumption and intensify the recovery rate. The photoactivity, stability, and magnetic recovery of the three composite magnetic photocatalysts were evaluated by using four typical organics. The results of the batch experiment confirm that Ag 2 O/MFe 2 O 4 (60%) possesses a good photoactivity and stability. However, Ag 2 O/ZnFe 2 O 4 exhibits a better photoactivity and higher magnetic recovery based on cycling during the semi-continuous process. The ferrites are inert for photocatalysis process without significant effect on Ag 2 O photocatalytic performance, but increase the surface area and improve the recovery rate as magnetic composite carriers.

Microwave catalytic activities of MFe2O4@CMT (M = Ni, Co) supported catalysts for the degradation of dimethyl phthalate

Wenli Qin,Xinyi Zhang,Zefei Chen,Xueya Liu,Manqing Ai,Pingping Zhang,Ying Ye,Zengling Ma

Meso–macroporous MFe2O4@CMT (M = Ni, Co) catalysts were synthesized by coating carbon microtubes (CMTs) employing a calcination method. The obtained materials NiFe2O4@CMT (PCNF) and CoFe2O4@CMT (PCCF) were characterized via X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), pore structure analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption of catalysts was measured and it was found that the maximum reflection loss value of PCCF and PCNF was about −41.50 dB at a thickness of 1.85 mm and −24.70 dB at a thickness of 6.55 mm, respectively. The composite catalysts were prepared for the microwave (MW)-induced Fenton-like catalytic degradation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP). The microwave catalytic activity of PCNF was higher than that of PCCF, which was closely related to its higher concentration of active species, better microwave-absorbing ability and high interaction between NiFe2O4 and CMT. Moreover, the degradation kinetics could be well-fitted by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. With an increase in the MW power, initial pH, catalyst dosage, and H2O2 concentration, the DMP degradation rate initially increased and then decreased, while it declined continuously with an increase in the initial DMP concentration. The introduction of metal oxides increased the mobility of the surface oxygen, playing a crucial role in the generation of surface oxygen species. The catalysts maintained high stability after five reaction cycles. The overall findings provide new insight into PCCF and PCNF under MW irradiation for the degradation of DMP and other relevant organic pollutants.

Microstructural evolution and catalytic properties of novel high-entropy spinel ferrites MFe2O4 (M= Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn)

Jianping Ai,Yaping Shuai,Min Hu,Lihong Cheng,Siling Luo,Wenkui Li,Zhiqin Chen,Liling Hu,Zehua Zhou

A novel class of high-entropy (HE) spinel ferrites (Mg 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )Fe 2 O 4 , have been successfully synthesized by the solution combustion synthesis method followed by heat-treatment at 500–1500 °C. The resultant spinel ferrites were systematically investigated by various methods including XRD , SEM, TEM, EDS, Raman spectra, etc. It was demonstrated that the entropy drives a reversible transformation between a single-phase state and multiphase. And the entropy predominates the thermodynamic landscape. The as-fabricated high-entropy (Mg 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )Fe 2 O 4 solid solution is single-phase with homogeneous transition-metal element distribution. Moreover, a trade-off between grain growth and crystallization during heat-treatment process; the average grain size of product is only 352.96 nm after being annealed at 1000 °C for 3 h probably due to “sluggish diffusion effect”. The resultant HE spinel ferrites (Mg 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )Fe 2 O 4 were first used as a heterogeneous catalyst of peroxodisulfate (PDS). Compared with basic solution condition, the HE spinel ferrite/PDS system exhibited a higher degradation rate for the removal of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) at initial pH range of 3.0–5.1. Both the hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radicals played an important role on RhB and TC degradation. The high catalytic efficiency and good stability of high-entropy (Mg 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )Fe 2 O 4 catalyst demonstrates that it is suitable for application in wastewater disposal.

Oxygen-enriched vacancy spinel MFe2O4/carbon (M = Ni, Mn, Co) derived from metal-organic frameworks toward boosting lithium storage

Wenqing Du,Yongqian Zheng,Xueyi Liu,Jie Cheng,R. Chenna Krishna Reddy,Akif Zeb,Xiaoming Lin,Yifan Luo

Transition metal oxide anode materials have recently been losing their importance as advanced functional and smart materials due to early capacity decay and sluggish kinetics. In order to address this issue, vacancy engineering approach can be adapted, which can effectively manipulate the electronic structure of transition metal oxide (TMO)-based electrode materials. Herein, a series of MOF-derived oxygen-rich vacancy MFe 2 O 4 /C (M = Ni, Mn, Co) materials are synthesized on a large scale via solvothermal and subsequent calcination treatment for energy storage applications in lithium-ion batteries. All the synthesized O V -NFO (NiFe 2 O 4 ), O V -MFO (MnFe 2 O 4 ) and O V -CFO (CoFe 2 O 4 ) electrodes achieve excellent electrochemical performance, superior multiplier performance and incredible lithium-ion diffusion rate, which was found to be superior than their counterpart electrodes. The oxygen vacancy (O V ) enrichment contribution to higher conductivity was realized by experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculations results, where it has been established that O V provides additional active sites, accelerates Li + diffusion and improves pseudocapacitive contribution. This vacancy-engineering strategy for modulating electronic structure and reaction kinetics enabled new ideas for the design and execution of other advanced transition metal-based electrode materials.

Synthesis, characterization and catalytic behavior of MFe2O4 (M = Ni, Zn and Co) nanoparticles on the thermal decomposition of TKX-50

Zhang Ming,Zhao Fengqi,Yang Yanjing,Li Hui,Gao Hongxu,Yao Ergang,Zhang Jiankan,An Ting,Jiang Zhoufeng

Bimetallic iron oxides (NiFe 2 O 4 , ZnFe 2 O 4 and CoFe 2 O 4 ) were prepared via the facile solvothermal method and characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS and BET instruments. The catalytic behavior of the bimetallic iron oxides on the thermal decomposition of 5, 5′-bistetrazole-1, 1′-diolate (TKX-50) was studied using DSC and TG-DTG methods. Besides, the corresponding kinetic parameters of TKX-50 thermal decomposition were calculated by multi-kinetics methods including traditional, iso-conversional and iteration methods. The thermal decomposition peak temperature ( T p ) and the activation energy ( E a ) reduced obviously after the addition of bimetallic iron oxides. Among different bimetallic iron oxides, the ZnFe 2 O 4 has the best catalytic activity for TKX-50 thermal decomposition. The high thermal decomposition peak temperature ( T HDP ) and average apparent activation energy ( E a ) of TKX-50 were decreased by 47.0 °C and 34.34 kJ mol −1 in the presence of ZnFe 2 O 4 sample. The excellent catalytic activity of ZnFe 2 O 4 for thermal decomposition of TKX-50 makes it a promising combustion catalyst of insensitive solid propellants containing TKX-50.

Synthesis of magnetic ferrite/carbon nano sphere composites (MFe2O4/CNS, M = Mn, Ni, Zn) for Rhodamine B degradation by catalyzing persulfate

Ding Feng,Li Jiaying,Wang Jiacheng,Wu Tengyan,Liu Xin,Yang Zeliang

Nano magnetic particles immobilized on the surface of carbon spheres ( M Fe 2 O 4 /CNS, M  = Mn, Ni, Zn) composites have been obtained through a facile and environmental friendly solvothermal method. The measurement results of M Fe 2 O 4 /CNS clarified the successful preparation of M Fe 2 O 4 /CNS and characterization of composites. Meanwhile, the activation performance of M Fe 2 O 4 /CNS was also measured through catalyzing persulfate (PS) for degrading Rhodamine B. Results showed that the catalytic performance of M Fe 2 O 4 /CNS for PS activation was much stronger than that of pure CNS, and the catalytic ability of M Fe 2 O 4 /CNS was MnFe 2 O 4 /CNS > NiFe 2 O 4 /CNS > ZnFe 2 O 4 /CNS. The influence factors of Rhodamine B degradation were also investigated. When the optimum conditions were conducted, with PS 5 × 10 –3  M, MnFe 2 O 4 /CNS 0.5 g/L, initial pH 6.0, and 60 °C, 98.4% Rhodamine B degradation was obtained within 70 min. Finally, the recycle of MnFe 2 O 4 /CNS was carried out for four times, which demonstrated the favorable retrievability and reusability of MnFe 2 O 4 /CNS. The experiments also proved that the synthesized MnFe 2 O 4 /CNS was a potentially useful catalyst for contaminants degradation in water/wastewater treatment.

Gaseous arsenic capture and immobilization from incineration flue gas by MFe2O4 (M = Ca, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) spinel sorbents

Dawei Wu,Aijia Zhang,Jing Liu,Yingju Yang

MFe 2 O 4 (M = Ca, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) spinel sorbents were synthesized by a low-temperature sol–gel auto-combustion method for arsenic adsorption from flue gas. CuFe 2 O 4 spinel exhibited the highest arsenic removal performance among these sorbents, and the adsorption capacity reached 14.09 mg/g at 800 °C. The pseudo-first order, pseudo-second-order and Elovich kinetic models can well predict arsenic removal process, which indicates that the mass transfer and chemisorption processes are important during arsenic capture by CuFe 2 O 4 . The impact of incineration flue gas components on As 2 O 3 adsorption was elucidated. It was found that HCl showed negligible effect on arsenic removal by CuFe 2 O 4 sorbent while CO 2 , H 2 O, SO 2 and NO played inhibition roles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed that the adsorbed arsenic exists in the forms of As 3+ and As 5+ on the sorbent surface. The chemisorption and oxidation mechanisms are responsible for arsenic adsorption by CuFe 2 O 4 . The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure and sequential extraction experiments demonstrated that arsenic can be considerably immobilized in the CuFe 2 O 4 sorbent. The high arsenic capture capacity, excellent HCl resistance and low risk of secondary contamination make CuFe 2 O 4 an efficient sorbent for gaseous arsenic capture.

Catalytic Effects of rGO–MFe2O4 (M = Ni, Co, and Zn) Nanocomposites on the Thermal Decomposition Performance and Mechanism of Energetic FOX-7

Ming Zhang,Fengqi Zhao,Ting An,Yanjing Yang,Hui Li,Qing Pan,Xiaohong Wang,Zhoufeng Jiang

Thermal decomposition performance of the insensitive energetic compound 1,1-diamino-2,2-dintroethene (FOX-7) is essential for its application in the field of solid propellants. This study seeks to reveal the catalytic effects of reduced graphene oxide–bimetallic oxide nanocomposites (rGO–MFe2O4, M = Ni, Co, and Zn) on the thermal decomposition, kinetic parameters, and pyrolysis mechanism of energetic FOX-7. The results showed that the catalytic activities of the bimetallic iron oxide (NiFe2O4, CoFe2O4, and ZnFe2O4) increased obviously after anchoring on the surface of graphene. Particularly, the rGO–NiFe2O4 nanocomposite possessed the best catalytic activity for FOX-7 thermal decomposition. The high thermal decomposition peak temperature (THDP) and the apparent activation energy (Ea) of FOX-7 were decreased by 57.4 °C and 54.27 kJ mol–1 after mixing with the rGO–NiFe2O4 nanocomposite. The excellent catalytic activity of rGO–NiFe2O4 can be attributed to the synergistic interaction between rGO and NiFe2O4, which is beneficial for the reduction of activation energy and a high thermal decomposition peak temperature of FOX-7. This study is helpful for the rational design of a solid propellant containing FOX-7 and to understand the thermal decomposition kinetics and mechanism of FOX-7.

Magnetic-responsive Pickering emulsions based on MFe2O4 (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) for green and efficient oxidation of benzyl alcohol

Yan Wang,Xuan Wang,Yonghao Dong,Mingli Peng,Lina Guo,Mengyao Cui,Yuan He,Jiabao Yi,Huijun Ma,Huan Zhang,Haiming Fan

The selective oxidation of alcohols has drawn significant attention in heterogeneous catalysis with the increasing use of Pickering interfacial catalysis (PIC) for green transformations of alcohols. However, it is still highly desirable to design and develop a solid catalyst with easy separation and recycling, made from abundant resources through a simple synthesis route, for the selective oxidation of alcohols. In this study, ferrite nanoparticles, synthesized via a hydrothermal process, were employed to act as a stabilizer and catalyst in PIC for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol using H2O2. The ferrite nanoparticles exhibited higher catalytic performance in PIC than in acetonitrile. The turnover number (TON) of the nanocatalyst in PIC was found to be 1.5–4 times higher than that in acetonitrile, and the reaction constant in PIC (kPIC = 0.712 h−1) was almost twice that in acetonitrile (kCH3CN = 0.310 h−1) for MnFe2O4 nanoparticles. Moreover, other alcohols could also be oxidized with moderately high conversion and selectivity in PIC. Significantly, the ferrite nanocatalyst could be easily separated from PIC using a magnet for reuse, achieving 88% BzOH conversion after five cycles. The use of hazardous organic solvents was avoided in PIC, making it a more advanced, green and sustainable reaction system.

Valence-Dependent Adsorption of Sb(III) and Sb(V) on Spinel MFe2O4 Ferrites: Spectroscopic Insights into Surface Hydroxyl and Metal–Oxygen Interactions

Liang Ma,Jie Zheng,Fuqiang Li,Yu Chen,Runshen He,Jiayi Zhang,Nana Wang,Zengping Ning,Zhenjie Zhao

Antimony (Sb) contamination in water poses significant environmental and health risks due to its high toxicity, persistence and complex redox behavior. Magnetic spinel ferrites (MFe2O4) have shown promise for Sb removal; however, the intrinsic influence of divalent metal species (M2+) in regulating Sb(III)/Sb(V) adsorption performance and interfacial mechanisms remains poorly understood. In this study, MnFe2O4, ZnFe2O4and NiFe2O4nanoparticles were synthesized and systematically evaluated to elucidate how M2+governs Sb immobilization behavior. Batch adsorption experiments revealed pronounced M–dependent selectivity. MnFe2O4exhibited the highest Sb(III) adsorption capacity (229.89 mg·g−1), whereas NiFe2O4showed superior affinity toward Sb(V) (up to 257.07 mg·g−1). Adsorption kinetics for both Sb species followed pseudo-second-order models, indicating chemically controlled processes. Isotherm analyses indicated predominantly monolayer complexation for Sb(III), while Sb(V) adsorption displayed mixed adsorption characteristics, reflecting surface heterogeneity. Mechanistic investigations based on FTIR and XPS analyses suggest that Sb(III) immobilization is dominated by inner-sphere complexation with surface Fe–O/Fe–OH groups, whereas Sb(V) adsorption involves synergistic coordination with both Fe–O and M–O (Mn–O/Ni–O) functional groups. XPS analysis of Sb-loaded ZnFe2O4revealed the coexistence of Sb(III) and Sb(V) species after Sb(III) adsorption, indicating surface-confined partial oxidation; the extent of solution-phase conversion was not independently quantified. Therefore, the redox process is interpreted as an interfacial phenomenon rather than bulk oxidation in solution. These results clarify that M2+species influence Sb removal behavior by modulating the reactivity of surface functional groups and interfacial redox characteristics, rather than merely altering adsorption capacity. This work provides spectroscopic insight into M-dependent structure–activity relationships in spinel ferrites and offers a theoretical basis for the rational design of magnetic adsorbents for selective and efficient Sb remediation.

Systematic cation engineering in spinel ferrites (MFe2O4, M = Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) for sub-ppm acetone sensing in non-invasive breath-based diabetes diagnosis

Yuxiang Ou,Xiangjian Liao,Shiquan Chen,Xingyu Liu,Rui Li,Yonglin Chen,Yifei Wang,Zixuan Wu,Aiping Huang,Xianzhe Liu,Jianyi Luo

The non-invasive detection of acetone in exhaled breath via gas sensors offers a simple and efficient strategy for the auxiliary diagnosis of diabetes. Spinel ferrites have emerged as promising candidates for sub-ppm acetone detection due to their outstanding physicochemical and electronic properties. Despite the development of diverse spinel ferrites, the intrinsic correlation between cation type (i.e., M 2 + in the MFe 2 O 4 structure) and these materials’ gas-sensing properties has not been systematically elucidated. In this study, spinel ferrites with different metal ions (MFe 2 O 4 , M = Fe, Co, Ni and Zn) were synthesized via a facile one-step solvothermal method. The effects of cation type on the crystal structure, microstructural features, and acetone-sensing performance of these ferrites were systematically studied. It demonstrates that the cation type exerts a significant influence on the grain size, morphological and microstructural characteristics, and gas-sensing kinetics of these ferrites, thereby regulating their overall acetone-sensing performance. Notably, the NiFe 2 O 4 sensor exhibits superior acetone-sensing properties toward 1.0 ppm acetone at its optimal operating temperature, including a high response value, a low detection limit, excellent humidity tolerance, outstanding selectivity, and long-term stability. Furthermore, the NiFe 2 O 4 sensor can effectively distinguish acetone concentration differences in exhaled breath between healthy individuals and diabetic patients (using simulated samples). These results clarify the intrinsic correlation between cation type and acetone-sensing performance of spinel ferrites, providing practical guidance for the rational design of high-performance acetone-sensing materials and promoting their application in breath-based auxiliary diagnosis of diabetes.
