Nano-scale antibacterial agents have attracted enthusiastic attention due to their size-dependent qualities, effective antibacterial activity, and unique physiochemical properties, which showed great application potential in plant protection and nutrition. In this work, Mt-supported ZnO/TiO 2 nanocomposite was prepared through sol-gel assisted impregnation method, and its antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria ( S. aureus ) and the wettability on cucumber leaves was investigated. The results suggested that the pillaring of Mt by TiO 2 increased BET specific surface area, improved Zn-dispersion, enhanced adsorption capacity , forming an exfoliation structure of TiO 2 pillared Mt nanocomposite . Besides, Mt-supported ZnO/TiO 2 nanocomposite showed an obvious increase of antibacterial activity and wetting property over pure ZnO and Mt-supported ZnO composite due to the doping of zinc oxide by carbon atoms and the increase of exposed active sites caused by the effective dispersion of ZnO. In addition, the optimal performance was achieved for 15.04% Zn element content with the diameter of the inhibition zone was 48.53 ± 0.1 mm and the contact angle was 82.5 ± 0.2° attributed to the increased BET surface area (72.33 m 2 /g) and metal oxide interaction between TiO 2 and Zn 2+ . The relatively low cost, green and environment friendly, high antibacterial activity, and wettability of Mt-supported ZnO/TiO 2 nanocomposite offers new avenues for the antibacterial agent in the field of agriculture and crop protection.

Oxidative damage resulting from weaning stress significantly impacts the growth performance and health status of piglets. Taurine, a dietary antioxidant with diverse functions, was investigated in this study for its protective role against weaning stress-induced oxidative damage and its underlying mechanism. Forty 28-day-old male castrated weaned piglets were randomly assigned to four groups. The control group received the basal diet, while the experimental groups were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0.1, 0.2%, or 0.3% taurine over a 28-day period. In vitro, H2O2 was utilized to induce oxidative damage to the jejunal mucosa of piglets via IPEC-J2 cells. The results demonstrated that taurine supplementation reduced the incidence of diarrhea in piglets compared to that in the control group (p < 0.05); the addition of 0.2 and 0.3% taurine led to increased average daily gain and improved feed conversion efficiency in weaned piglets, showing a linear dose-response correlation (p < 0.05). Taurine supplementation at 0.2 and 0.3% enhanced the activities of serum CAT and GSH-Px while decreasing the levels of serum NO, XOD, GSSG, and MDA (p < 0.05). Moreover, it significantly elevated the levels of GSS, Trx, POD, complex I, mt-nd5, and mt-nd6, enhancing superoxide anion scavenging capacity and the hydroxyl-free scavenging rate in the livers of weaned piglets while reducing NO levels in the liver (p < 0.05). Additionally, 0.2 and 0.3% taurine supplementation decreased serum IL-6 levels and elevated the concentrations of IgA, IgG, and IL-10 in weaned piglets (p < 0.05). The levels of occludin, claudin, and ZO-1 in the jejunum mucosa of weaned piglets increased with 0.2 and 0.3% taurine supplementation (p < 0.05). In IPEC-J2 cells, pretreatment with 25 mM taurine for 24 h enhanced the activities of SOD and CAT; reduced the MDA content; upregulated the mRNA expression of various genes, including ZO-1, occludin, claudin-1, Nrf2, and HO-1; and reversed the oxidative damage induced by H2O2 exposure (p < 0.05). Overall, the findings suggest that the inclusion of 2 and 3% taurine in the diet can enhance growth performance, reduce diarrhea rates, ameliorate oxidative stress and inflammation, and promote intestinal barrier function in weaned piglets.

Annulus fibrosus (AF) injury is a significant cause of NP protrusion and intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). Currently, the molecular mechanisms of IDD remain unclear, and there is a lack of methods for early diagnosis and targeted drug delivery through the circulatory system. This study focuses on the mitochondria-derived tsRNA, IDDMT (IDD-related mitochondrial-derived tsRNA, mt-TRF3-24-AspGTC), which is significantly upregulated in degenerated AF tissues of intervertebral discs. Mechanistically, IDDMT overexpression interacts with IMPDH2, activating the NF-κB signaling pathway and leading to mitochondrial dysfunction, ROS production, and apoptosis in AF cells. To address this issue, a nanocarrier system, UCNP (NaGdF 4 @NaErF 4 @NaLuF 4 @MSN@ZIF-8@IN-IDDMT@Suc-(GfO) 9 ), capable of dual-modal imaging with MRI and NIR II, for targeted delivery of IDDMT inhibitors to repair AF damage and slow the progression of IDD is developed. In vitro and in vivo experiments have confirmed the effectiveness of UMZG in restoring mitochondrial dynamics, reducing ROS production, inflammation, and cell apoptosis. This innovative therapeutic approach, which integrates dual-modal imaging capabilities, offers a new avenue for the early treatment of IDD.

Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for patients with solid tumors. However, the intricate inflammatory and immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment after surgery is recognized as a primary cause of tumor recurrence and metastasis. Here, we design and construct an in situ injectable therapeutic hydrogel encapsulating 1-methyl-d-tryptophan (1-d-MT), a small-molecule competitive inhibitor of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase, and meloxicam, a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 (Ge1MT/Mel hydrogel) to prevent postoperative tumor metastasis and relapse. In this hydrogel system, 1-d-MT increases cytotoxic T lymphocytes and decreases regulatory T cells, thereby reversing the tumor immune tolerance microenvironment, while released meloxicam reduces inflammation caused by postoperative trauma via the COX-2/PGE2 pathway. When delivered into the resected tumor cavity, the hydrogel system mimics a “hot” tumor-immunity niche to attack residual tumor cells and significantly suppresses the postoperative recurrence of colorectal cancer. In the model of postoperative breast cancer and colorectal cancer recurrence and metastasis, the Ge1MT/Mel hydrogel substantially reduces the volume of recurrent tumors and demonstrates 85.1% and 66.7% inhibition rates of metastases, respectively. Importantly, the Ge1MT/Mel hydrogel markedly stimulates a potent antitumor immune response in the cancer lesion microenvironment, increasing antitumor immune cells including CD8+ T cells, as well as elevating antitumor cytokines such as interferon-γ. Overall, combination immunotherapy via the Ge1MT/Mel hydrogel after surgery represents a promising strategy to minimize residual tumor burden and reduce recurrence risk following tumor resection.

Cadmium (Cd) exposure is a widespread problem in many parts of the world, but effective means to treat Cd exposure is still lacking. Hence, an engineered strain expressing metallothionein (MT) named Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN)-MT was constructed, and its potential in the treatment of Cd exposure was evaluated. The in vitro studies showed that metallothionein expressed by EcN-MT could significantly bind Cd. Further, the in vivo results indicated that EcN-MT strain could reduce 26.3% Cd in the liver and increase 24.7% Cd in the feces, which greatly decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and increased catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in liver, and reduced the expression of toll-like receptor4 (TLR4), nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), the myeloid differentiation factor 88 (Myd88) andincreased B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2)/Bcl-2-Associated X (Bax). Moreover, high throughput sequencing results indicated that EcN-MT strain greatly enhanced the beneficial bacteria of Ruminococcaceae, Lactobacillaceae, Akkermansia , Muribaculaceae , Lachnospiraceae , Dubosiella and restored the disturbed microbial ecology to the normal level. Therefore, the high Cd binding capacity of the expressed metallothionein, together with the beneficial characteristics of the host bacteria EcN, makes EcN-MT a sound reagent for the treatment of subchronic Cd exposure-induced liver injury.

The potential application of triethylenetetramine intercalated montmorillonite (TETA-Mt) in mine tailings treatment and AMD (acid mine drainage) remediation was investigated with batch experiments. The structural and morphological characteristics of TETA-Mt were analyzed with XRD, FTIR, DTG-TG and SEM. The inhibition efficiencies of TETA-Mt against heavy metal release from mine tailings when exposed to acid rain leaching was examined and compared with that of triethylenetetramine (TETA) and Mt. Results showed that the overall inhibition by TETA-Mt surpassed that by TETA or Mt for various heavy metal ions over an acid rain pH range of 3–5.6 and a temperature range of 25–40 °C. When mine tailings were exposed to acid rain of pH 4.8 (the average rain pH of the mining site where the mine tailings were from), TETA-Mt achieved an inhibition efficiency of over 90% for Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Mn 2+ release, and 70% for Pb 2+ at 25 °C. It was shown that TETA-Mt has a strong buffering capacity. Moreover, TETA-Mt was able to adsorb heavy metal ions and the adsorption process was fast, suggesting that coordination was mainly responsible. These results showed the potential of TETA-Mt in AMD mitigation, especially in acid rain affected mining area.

Definitely, copper homeostasis in mitochondria, and copper-triggered modality of mitochondrial cell death have been further confirmed. However, existing copper-based nanoplatforms were focused on synergistic therapies when the intracellular therapeutic targets were relatively scattered. Effective integrating of all targets within mitochondria to generate power coalescence remains a challenge. Herein, we develop a novel copper-based delivery system to trigger power coalescence and death vortex within tumor cell mitochondria. Specifically, a mitochondrial targeting "copper missile" loaded with curcumin (termed as Cur@CuS-TPP-HA, CCTH) was designed for cuproptosis/phototherapy/chemotherapy synergistic anti-tumor therapy. Once the CCTH NPs are shuttled to the mitochondria, near-infrared (NIR) irradiation initiates the release of copper ions and curcumin for in situ drug accumulation in cancer cell mitochondria. Excess of copper ions and curcumin can activate cuproptosis and mitochondrial apoptosis pathways respectively. When combined, they can cause an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS), damage to mitochondrial DNA (mt-DNA), and a decrease in energy supply, thereby leading to a “vicious circle” of mitochondrial damage that further enhances tumor-killing efficacy. As a consequence, this "copper missile" exhibits advanced anti-tumor effects as verified through in vitro assessments and in vivo evaluations using the 4T1 breast tumor model, providing a promising approach for cuproptosis-based synergistic anti-tumor therapy.

The elimination of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) from water has attracted extensive research attention. This study hydrothermally synthesized composite photocatalysts composed of BiVO 4 microspheres containing coexisting phases of monoclinic scheelite (M-BiVO 4 ) and tetragonal zircon (T-BiVO 4 ), i.e., MT-BiVO 4 , loaded onto P-doped g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (PCNS). Furthermore, their morphology, structure, and photoelectrochemical properties were comprehensively characterized, and the performance and stability of photocatalytic degradation of TC-HCl were examined. Additionally, the effects of humic acid (HA), coexisting anions/cations, and actual water samples on the degradation efficiency of TC-HCl were investigated, and the degradation mechanism and pathways were examined. The findings indicated that the percentage of M-BiVO 4 in MT-BiVO 4 considerably influences the photocatalytic activity of the composite catalyst. Furthermore, the excellent photocatalytic performance of 5% BVO/PCNS was attributed to the synergistic effects of P-doping the modified g-C 3 N 4 , MT-BiVO 4 isotype heterojunction effects, and the Z-scheme heterojunction constructed from MT-BiVO 4 and PCNS, which can enhance the absorption range of the visible light and accelerate the transfer and separation of charge carriers between catalysts. The free radical capture experiments and electron spin resonance tests indicated that holes and O 2 - were the dominant active species in the photocatalytic degradation process. With high reusability and stability, the 5% BVO/PCNS composite has great potential for practical wastewater treatment applications. This study offers a new approach for preparing photocatalysts synergized by isotype and Z-scheme heterojunctions.

A BiOCl-Mt material assembled from BiOCl and Na-montmorillonite (Na-Mt) was characterized by XRD , FT-IR, TEM, XPS and UV–vis DRS . Na-Mt was clearly demonstrated to be capable of improving BiOCl's photocatalytic performance. The focus was placed on the evaluation of BiOCl-Mt in the terms of photocatalytic activity for cationic Rhodamine B (RhB) and anionic Orange G (OG). Both can be removed more efficiently using BiOCl-Mt compared with pure BiOCl under ultraviolet light irradiation. Although h v b + and O 2 − are the two primary reactive species, the improved photocatalytic degradation performance is primarily attributed to the enhanced separation of photogenerated charge carriers in the catalyst. The Bronsted acidity derived from montmorillonite acid sites and the dissolved oxygen in the solution are capable of promoting dye photocatalysis because they effectively capture the photogenerated electrons. Under optimized conditions, TOC mineralization with rates of 82.3% for RhB and 85.9% for OG was obtained in a BiOCl-Mt catalysed photocatalysis process. The mechanism responsible for the oxidative decomposition of the two different dyes is primarily hole-driven. BiOCl-Mt was stable during the process, with its structures remaining almost unchanged after it was recycled three times. Therefore, BiOCl-Mt will have a promising worldwide application in dye-containing wastewater treatment .

Aminoglycosides exhibit ototoxicity by damaging mitochondria, which in turn generate reactive oxygen species that induce hair cell death and subsequent hearing loss. It is well known that damaged mitochondria are degraded by mitophagy, an important mitochondrial quality control system that maintains mitochondrial homeostasis and ensures cell survival. However, it is unclear whether dysregulation of mitophagy contributes to aminoglycoside-induced hair cell injury. In the current study, we found that PINK1-PRKN-mediated mitophagy was impaired in neomycin-treated hair cells. Our data suggested that mitochondrial recruitment of PRKN and phagophore recognition of damaged mitochondria during mitophagy were blocked following neomycin treatment. In addition, the degradation of damaged mitochondria by lysosomes was significantly decreased as indicated by the mitophagic flux reporter mt-mKeima. Moreover, we demonstrated that neomycin disrupted mitophagy through transcriptional inhibition of Pink1 expression, the key initiator of mitophagy. Moreover, we found that neomycin impaired mitophagy by inducing ATF3 expression. Importantly, treatment with a mitophagy activator could rescue neomycin-treated hair cells by increasing mitophagy, indicating that genetic modulation or drug intervention in mitophagy may have therapeutic potential for aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss.Abbreviations: AAV: adeno-associated virus; ABR: auditory brainstem response; ATF3: activating transcription factor 3; ATOH1/MATH1: atonal bHLH transcription factor 1; BafA1: bafilomycin A1; CCCP: carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenyl hydrazone; COX4I1/COXIV: cytochrome c oxidase subunit 4I1; CTBP2/RIBEYE: C-terminal binding protein 2; DFP: deferiprone; EGFP: enhanced green fluorescent protein; FOXO3: forkhead box O3; GRIA2/GLUR2: glutamate receptor, ionotropic, AMPA2 (alpha 2); HC: hair cell; HSPD1/HSP60: heat shock protein 1 (chaperonin); IHC: inner hair cell; MAP1LC3B/LC3B: microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 beta; MYO7A: myosin VIIA; OPTN: optineurin; OMM: outer mitochondrial membrane; PRKN: parkin RBR E3 ubiquitin protein ligase; PINK1: PTEN induced putative kinase 1; RT-qPCR: real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction; TOMM20/TOM20: translocase of outer mitochondrial membrane 20; TUNEL: Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) dUTP nick-end labeling; USP30: ubiquitin specific peptidase 30; XBP1: X-box binding protein 1.

Dendroclimatological techniques were employed to investigate the relationship between Chinese Pinus ( Pinus tabulaeformis Carr.) growth and climatic variability in the Mt. Yishan region of Shandong Province, China, over the past 253 years. Using regression analysis, the wetness index (WI) was reconstructed for the Mt. Yishan area for the period 1755–2007 AD based on tree-ring widths; predictor variables accounted for 40 % of the variance. The reconstructed time-series displayed an increasing trend after the late 1960s. Both the estimated and the observed WI for May–August were better correlated with precipitation than temperature during the period 1958–2007 AD, indicating that the contribution of precipitation to the WI was larger than temperature in the study area. The reconstructed WI was compared with the dryness/wetness index of China and land areas that were affected by droughts and floods using the agricultural statistics for Shandong Province. In addition, the WI time-series corresponded well with the peanut yield in Shandong Province at high frequency, which may be reasonable in the context of agriculture in Shandong. The 3-, 5- to 6- and 9- to 10-year periodicities detected in the time-series suggested that the reconstructed WI in the Mt. Yishan area may be related to large-scale climate variations.

For further understanding leaching characteristics of heavy metals in tailings and better immobilization on heavy metals against acid rain, batch experiments were conducted. The leaching results of Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II) can be well fit by second-order kinetics equation , and Pb(II) can be well fit by two-constant equation. The leaching intensity of heavy metals in tailings was ranged as: Mn(II)> Cu(II)> Cd(II)> Zn(II)> Pb(II). Triethylenetetramine functioned montmorillonite (TETA-Mt) was successfully synthesized and can obtain simultaneous immobilization effect compared with Mt and TETA, and immobilization rates on Cu(II), Cd(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II) can reach above 90%, the immobilization rate on Pb(II) can reach more than 75%. The mechanisms for efficient immobilization of heavy metals on TETA-Mt included buffering and adsorption abilities. The mechanism for TETA-Mt adsorption of heavy metals included physical absorption, chelation and chemical sedimentation. The results showed that TETA-Mt can be applied to effective immobilization of heavy metals in tailings and efficient remediation of acid mine drainage (AMD) in acid rain area.
