A hyperelastic and hydrophobic silica aerogel has been prepared by using Vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) and Methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) as the composite precursor. The effect of the VTES/MTMS molar ratio on the morphology of the VTES/MTMS-based aerogel has been investigated. The VTES/MTMS-based aerogel with a typical nano-porous structure exhibits a high surface area (321 m 2 /g), a low density (0.143 g·cm − 3 ) and low thermal conductivity (0.024 ± 0.003 W·m − 1 ·K − 1 ). The existence of methyl and vinyl groups is beneficial to enhancing the elasticities of aerogels. The MVTES5, with a VTES/MTMS molar ratio of 0.060, could bear a compressive strain of 55% and quickly recover to its original length after the stress is released. It is demonstrated that the partial replacement of the methyl with vinyl groups can greatly enhance the mechanical properties , and the compressive stress is 0.571 MPa. Furthermore, the VTES/MTMS-based aerogel exhibits hydrophobic properties with a contact angle of 146°.

To address growing global concerns about wood safety, a novel strategy has been developed to replace wood with bamboo, taking advantage of its abundant availability and sustainable potential. To reduce the natural hydrophilicity of bamboo, a superhydrophobic material was synthesized through a one-pot sol-gel process using methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS). This method simplifies the preparation of superhydrophobic coatings by eliminating the need for additional micro- and nano-particle additives or modifications with other low surface energy materials. Under alkaline conditions, MTMS promotes the in-situ formation of a three-dimensional micro- and nano-scale structure on the bamboo surface via a straightforward impregnation process that simultaneously imparts low surface energy to the substrate. The chemical reaction between MTMS and the bamboo surface forms strong covalent bonds, resulting in a water contact angle of 155.4° and a sliding angle of 2.3°. Moreover, the NH 4 OH@MTMS@bamboo composite exhibits exceptional durability under harsh conditions, including exposure to moisture, dirt, and intense ultraviolet radiation. This cost-effective, eco-friendly, and efficient preparation method offers significant potential for industrial-scale applications.

Hybrid MTMS–silica aerogels incorporating calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H), the primary hydration product in cementitious systems, were synthesized via sol–gel processing followed by freeze-drying. The influence of C–S–H loading on pore structure, density, wettability, and thermal transport was investigated. The lowest thermal conductivity (0.068 W/m·K) and tap density (0.30 g/cm3) were obtained at 10% C–S–H loading (wM-CSH10), while the thermal conductivity increases to approximately 0.075–0.082 W/m·K at higher C–S–H content. All samples exhibit mesoporous structures with pore diameters in the range of 10–21 nm. Increasing C–S–H content progressively densified the network, reduced mesopore volume, and enhanced high-temperature mass retention up to 540 °C. FTIR analysis confirmed Si–O–Ca interfacial interactions, while nitrogen adsorption demonstrated persistent mesoporosity across all compositions. Thermal conductivity showed a positive correlation with density, indicating that bulk densification governs heat transport in the hybrid system. Beyond structural modification, the incorporation of C–S–H introduces chemical and microstructural features relevant to cement-based materials, suggesting potential compatibility with cementitious matrices. The results highlight the compositional trade-off between insulation efficiency and structural stability and demonstrate the potential of C–S–H-modified MTMS–silica aerogels for future integration into cement-based composites. These findings provide fundamental insight into their possible use in thermal insulation applications, such as building envelope systems (walls, façades, and roofs used for thermal insulation).

Recycling herbal residues for oily wastewater purification is a potential way to use the wastes to treat wastes. Cellulose extracted from herbal residues is a fine material for cryogel fabrication. However, the cellulose cryogels were not suitable for oily wastewater treatment due to their amphiphilicity. To address this issue, the cryogels were modified with methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS), which made them hydrophobic and reduced their surface energy. In this study, the herbal residues ( Ficus microcarpa L. f) were used in cryogel preparation for the first time. The cryogels exhibit super lightweight and low density. The modified cryogels show excellent sorption capacity for free oils, especially silicone oil (51.22 g/g), and outperformed some recent sorbents. They also effectively separated water-in-toluene emulsion stabilized by Span 80, with a separation efficiency of 98.57 % and a flux of 1474.67 L/m 2 h. This study demonstrated a novel application of waste herbal residues in the field of environmental remediation.

The gas-liquid transport efficiency of porous transport layers (PTLs) in proton exchange membrane electrolyzers (PEMECs) critically influences overall electrolysis performance. Wettability optimization enhances gas-liquid dynamics, and templated modification techniques are used to regulate hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of PTL, improving gas-liquid distribution and transport pathways. This study investigates the influences of modifier composition and template patterns on the gas-liquid transport behavior electrolytic efficiency of PEMECs. Results showed that compared to polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based systems, a methyltrimethylsilane (MTMS)/hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) composite formed superhydrophobic coating (contact angle θ = 150.3°) on titanium substrates, demonstrating superior interfacial stability and anti-wetting properties. Furthermore, by changing the wettability modification strategy, the effects of hydrophilic region proportions (10 %, 20 %, 30 %) and geometries on electrochemical performance were evaluated. It was shown that the 10 % hydrophobic sample achieved optimal results, with a minimum electrochemical resistance ( R ohm ) of 0.20497 Ω cm 2 at 1.7 V and 0.5 A/cm 2 . Additional experiments on hydrophobic region geometry revealed that circular designs enhance gas-liquid mass transfer by accelerating bubble detachment. These findings advance PTL optimization strategies and offer practical insights for improving PEMEC efficiency and scalability.

The widespread application of fast-grown timber species is hindered by their high susceptibility to water absorption, poor dimensional stability, and inadequate mechanical strength. In this study, poplar wood underwent a sequential impregnation process with methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and an ammonia-ethanol mixture. This combined treatment allowed silane cross-linking with cell walls while also filling wood cavities, promoting the in-situ growth of nanoparticles. After the impregnation process, a subsequent surface treatment with methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS) was then performed to establish a hydrophobic surface layer. Through structural and surface modification, a novel double-layer hydrophobic system was constructed to enhance water resistance. The modified wood exhibits a surface water contact angle of 153.6° ± 0.5° and a 10-mm depth contact angle of 112.8° ± 0.6°, illustrating the effectiveness of the dual-layer hydrophobic structure. Compared to the control wood, the modified samples exhibited a 65.6 % reduction in 24 h water absorption and a 48.4 % decrease in volume swelling. Additionally, cross-linking and lumen filling considerably improved the mechanical properties of the modified wood. The double-layer hydrophobic system shows significant potential to extend the service life of wood and enhance its mechanical performance, paving the way for broader applications in moisture-sensitive environments.

In this paper, hybrid silica aerogels were prepared by methltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and water-glass co-precursor through two-step sol-gel process followed by freeze drying (FD). The characteristics of aerogels were strongly affected by the molar ratio of MTMS/Water-glass. When the molar ratio is 5.1, hybrid aerogel was obtained with good performances, such as low density (0.083 g/cm 3 ), high contact angle (155.1°) and low thermal conductivity (0.0226 W/m·K). The density, contact angle and thermal conductivity of aerogels based on co-precursor are still showing excellent thermal stability with the same performances after 550 °C heat-treatment.

With increasing environmental awareness, developing renewable and biodegradable bio-based greases is a research priority. Herein, phosphorylated cellulose nanofibrils (PCNF) were selected as a bio-based thickener due to their renewability, excellent network-forming ability, and improved interfacial properties. However, the inherent hydrophilicity of PCNF limits its compatibility with non-polar vegetable oils. To overcome this, methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) was used for hydrophobic modification of PCNF, and fully bio-based greases were fabricated by combining modified PCNF (M-PCNF) with castor oil. The effects of MTMS silanization degree and M-PCNF content on the microstructure, physicochemical properties, rheology, and tribology of the greases were systematically investigated. Results show that increasing silanization degree enhances penetration, oil separation, and mechanical stability but reduces viscosity and structural strength. Increasing M-PCNF content improves thickening capacity, viscosity, structural strength, and rebuild rate. Notably, the friction coefficient of M-PCNF-based greases stabilizes at 0.04–0.06, lower than that of commercial lithium grease, demonstrating excellent friction-reducing stability. This work provides a feasible strategy for high-performance bio-based greases and offers insights into structure–property relationships relevant to cellulose-based thickener design for green lubrication.
