Layered Co(OH) 2 has been regarded as a potential candidate for pseudocapacitor electrode material, but it is limited by its poor conductivity and low surface area. Herein, carbonated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) were used to improve the conductivity of α-Co(OH) 2 nanocomposites. α-Co(OH) 2 nanoflowers were successfully grown and tangled with MWCNTs-COOH to form a randomly oriented network structure mediated by ammonia using water-methanol as co-solvent at room temperature. The capacitance performances of the obtained α-Co(OH) 2 @MWCNT-COOH composites were investigated to find that MWCNT-COOH improved the specific capacitance efficiently. Especially, in the presence of 20% in mole of MWCNT-COOH, the composite gave rise to the high specific capacitance of 1027 F/g at the current density of 2 A/g with good cycle stability, whose specific capacitance remained 78% of its original even after 5000 cycles at 30 A/g current. The large surface area and strengthening the conductivity of the composites lead to the improvement of efficiency in charge/discharge process.

A rationally designed MWCNT-COO-MXene/PNIPAM-PAM bilayer hydrogel actuator. • Covalent heterostructure enables rapid photothermal actuation and self-sensing. • Excellent mechanical strength and reversible biomimetic shape-morphing. • An integrated device couples NIR-driven motion with real-time resistance feedback. Stimulus-responsive hydrogels hold great potential in soft robotics, yet conventional PNIPAM hydrogels are limited by slow response speed, single functionality, and poor mechanical strength. Introducing photothermal fillers such as MXene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is an effective strategy to enhance their performance. However, conventional physical blending results in weak interfacial interactions, filler aggregation and limited performance enhancement. Here, we address this challenge by constructing a covalent MWCNTs-COOH@MXene heterostructure via EDC/NHS-mediated esterification, which serves as an efficient conductive and thermal network within the PNIPAM matrix and is firmly integrated with the polyacrylamide (PAM) passive layer through interfacial interpenetration. Compared with the physically blended counterpart, the covalently bonded hydrogel exhibits significantly enhanced thermal conductivity (1.49 W/(m·K)) and higher photothermal conversion efficiency (45.03%). The bilayer actuator exhibited rapid and reversible bending with a response time of 10 s, reaching a maximum bending angle of 420° under thermal stimulation and 80° under NIR light. The actuation amplitude could be controlled by adjusting the thickness ratio of the layers, temperature, and light parameters. Leveraging the efficient photothermal conversion and internal heat conduction of the MWCNTs-COOH@MXene heterostructure, the hydrogel achieved fast light-driven deformation and enabled biomimetic applications such as flower-like opening/closing, target grasping, and autonomous swimming. By integrating actuation and sensing functions, an NIR-light-controlled switch was realized that performed photomechanical actions while providing real-time state feedback through resistance monitoring. This work provides a new material platform and design strategy for high-performance soft robots and intelligent actuators with integrated functionalities. Annealing is a heat treatment process for materials. In this study, a conductive hydrogel was synthesized by a one-pot method using three raw materials: polyvinyl alcohol(PVA), carboxylated carbon nanotubes(Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes-COOH, MWCNTs-COOH) and polyethyleneimine (PEI). Based on the traditional freeze-thaw method for the preparation of PVA-based hydrogels, the annealing treatment was further added here to enhance the mechanical properties and fatigue resistance of the hydrogels. The synthesized conductive hydrogels were annealed in oven at different temperatures for a certain time, and the optimized experimental conditions and results were: the mechanical properties of the conductive hydrogel were best improved under the condition of 100 ℃-20 min, with the ultimate stress of 30.8 MPa and toughness as high as 779.58 MJ/m 3 . A high-strength, fatigue-resistant conductive hydrogel was successfully prepared, and its mechanical properties far exceeded those of other conductive hydrogels. Through a series of tests such as X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it was found that annealing promotes the orderly arrangement of PVA chains and crystallization through high temperatures, so as to enhance the mechanical properties of hydrogels. As a relatively simple and inexpensive annealing post-treatment technique, it is expected to be more widely used in improving the mechanical properties of hydrogels.

The shuttle effects of polysulfides and abominable safety problems restrict the practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries. Herein, we report a polyimide-based Janus separator by a simple filtration method introducing MoO 3 nanoparticles and MWCNTs-COOH. Using this separator, the lithium-sulfur battery delivers a reversible capacity of 1274 mA h g −1 at 0.2 C and a capacity 637 mA h g −1 at 5 C. Moreover, the separator is flame-retardant and thermal-stable without obvious shrinkage even at 300 °C. Experimental observations reveal that uniformly dispersed MoO 3 nanoparticles and MWCNTs-COOH as a pore structure regulator can obviously decrease the pore diameter and porosity of electrospun polyimide (PI) skeleton for intercepting polysulfides. The synergistic effect between MWCNTs-COOH, MoO 3 and polyimide fibers enables the faster kinetics and more efficient conversion of polysulfides.

Acyclovir (Acyclovir, ACV) is an antiviral drug which, despite its favorable safety profile, can have systemic adverse effects, following improper use. This study prepared a clay-like two-dimensional transition metal carbide Ti 3 C 2 by etching Ti 3 AlC 2 with LiF and HCl. Carboxylated multi walled carbon nanotubes (Carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes , MWCNTs-COOH) were combined with Ti 3 C 2 using chitosan (Chitosan, CS) as solvent and ultrasonic treatment . The nanocomposite was then modified onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (Glassy carbon electrode, GCE) to develop an electrochemical sensor for the detection of ACV. The Ti 3 C 2 -CS-MWCNTs-COOH/GCE nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffractometry (X-ray diffractometry, XRD), scanning electron microscope (Scanning electron microscope,SEM), and cyclic voltammetry (Cyclic voltammetry,CV), as well as the electrochemical impedance method (Electrochemical impedance,EIS). The successful preparation of Ti 3 C 2 -CS-MWCNTs-COOH, and the good electrochemical performance of the electrode were verified. Linear scanning voltammetry (Linear scan voltammetry,LSV) was used to quantify the ACV. The linear range of the method is wider than other works (0.05 ∼ 20.0 and 20.0 ∼ 500.0 μM), with a low detection limit (0.088 μM). The sensor achieves sensitive detection of ACV and can be used for the analysis of ACV in pharmaceutical and urine dosage forms , with recoveries of 95.5∼97.6% and 95.6∼97.5%, respectively. For the first time, this sensor utilizes clay-like Ti 3 C 2 with a larger specific surface area in combination with MWCNTs-COOH for ACV detection, which exhibits excellent immunity to interference, repeatability, reproducibility, and stability. This method provides a rapid and sensitive method for the determination of ACV, and lays foundations for developing miniaturized field rapid test detectors.

Addressing the critical challenge of balancing mechanical robustness and electrical conductivity in hydrogels for wearable sensors, this study proposes a synergistic processing strategy that integrates freeze-thaw cycling, thermal annealing, and the Hofmeister effect-induced salting. A ternary composite hydrogel was prepared with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the matrix, polyethyleneimine (PEI) to enhance crosslinking and biocompatibility, and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) to improve conductivity. The optimized freeze-thawing-annealing (100 °C, 20 min) and salting-out (1.5 M NaCl) process resulted in a densely cross-linked network featuring significantly enhanced crystallinity and a homogeneous, pore-free microstructure. This hierarchical structure confers upon the hydrogel outstanding mechanical properties: tensile strength of 4.15 MPa, toughness of 17.73 MJ/m 3 , elastic modulus of 2.84 MPa, and a high fatigue threshold of 117.4 J/m 2 . Simultaneously, the electrical conductivity of the hydrogel reached 0.449 S/m. The hydrogel demonstrated excellent strain/pressure sensing capabilities, featuring tunable gauge factors (GF = 0.87–2.12 within the 0-100% strain range) and pressure sensitivity (0.145 kPa -1 below 2 kPa). The practical applicability of the hydrogel was verified by reliably monitoring various human motions in real-time. This research offers a scalable and effective material design strategy for next-generation flexible electronics.

Many new laboratory-scale photothermal conversion materials have been developed for purification or desalination but developing easy-to-manufacture, low-cost and scalable materials with high efficiency of solar energy to thermal energy still faces great challenges. Herein, we provided a simple and effective method for self-assembly of dopamine-modified boron nitride (BN-PDA) and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) layers on cotton fabric (CF), and assembled a solar steam generator by using the as-prepared composite cotton fabric as photothermal layer, cotton yarns (CYs) as water supply channel, and thermally insulated polystyrene (PS) foam as a supporting material. This solar steam generator exhibited a superior evaporation rate of 1.55 kg m −2 h −1 and an excellent photothermal conversion efficiency of ∼83.66% under 1.0 sun irradiance (1.0 kW m −2 ), with optical absorption up to 93.50% in the wavelength of 300–2500 nm. Meanwhile, excellent quality of freshwater from seawater and dyeing wastewater was also demonstrated. Different from other solar steam generator systems, this assembled fabric is cost-effective and readily available, suitable for large-scale industrial applications. Notably, the results show that multi-layer structure imparts it with outstanding mechanical flexibility and robustness, making it a potential candidate for fresh water supply in remote, off-grid or water-contaminated areas.

Cu-MOF-derived Cu/Cu 2 O-embedded carbon integrated with MWCNTs-COOH. • Synergistic hetero-interface with Cu⁺ Lewis acid sites and conductive network. • Sensitive L -DOPA detection with 0.007 μM LOD and broad linear range. • Effective anti-interference against uric acid in biological matrices. • Validated applicability in human serum and urine samples (94.8–105.2%). Reliable monitoring of levodopa ( L -DOPA) is clinically crucial for optimizing Parkinson’s disease therapy and minimizing side effects. Herein, a sensitive electrochemical sensor was constructed using a composite of Cu-MOF-derived Cu/Cu 2 O-embedded carbon integrated with carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (C-Cu-MOF/MWCNTs-COOH). The key innovation of this work lies in designing a synergistic hetero-interface where carbonization yields Cu and Cu 2 O species within a carbon framework, while the incorporated MWCNTs-COOH establish a conductive network that facilitates electron transfer. The enhanced electrochemical response arises from the synergistic interaction between the mixed-valence copper species and the carbon framework. Specifically, Cu + serves as Lewis acid sites for L -DOPA enrichment while the carbon scaffold together with Cu 0 promotes interfacial electron transfer. Kinetic analysis reveals an adsorption-controlled process involving two-electron and two-proton transfer. Under optimized conditions, the sensor delivers a broad linear response (0.01–15 μM) with a low detection limit of 0.007 μM, alongside satisfactory repeatability, reproducibility, and long-term stability (94.3% retention after 21 days). Notably, uric acid (UA), a major coexisting interferent in physiological fluids with overlapping oxidation potential, is well resolved from L -DOPA at the modified electrode, causing negligible interference in coexistent measurements. Practical applicability is further validated by recoveries of 94.8–105.2% in human serum and urine samples. These results demonstrate that C-Cu-MOF/MWCNTs-COOH is a highly effective sensing platform for L -DOPA, combining excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and practical utility for clinical monitoring.

Low-cost PCB‑gold electrode with superior electron kinetics. • MWCNTs/Nafion network boosts sensitivity and selectivity. • High performance: 1–70 μM linear range and 202 nM LOD. • Strong anti-biofouling and selectivity in complex media. • Direct dopamine detection in 3D dECM neuronal models. Dopamine (DA) is a crucial neurotransmitter whose abnormal fluctuations are linked to neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Detecting DA in complex biological matrices faces challenges from coexisting interferents and electrode biofouling. Here, we developed a carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) and Nafion-modified printed circuit board gold electrode (PCB-AuE) for selective DA detection. The PCB-AuE platform offers superior electron transfer kinetics, ultra-low cost, and design flexibility compared to commercial electrodes. The synergistic MWCNTs-COOH/Nafion modification provides a highly conductive 3D network with abundant active sites while electrostatically repelling anionic interferents (ascorbic acid and uric acid). The sensor achieved a broad linear range (1–70 μM), high sensitivity (1.98 μA/μM), and low detection limit (202 nM) with excellent reproducibility (RSD = 4.8%). Despite an 8.5% signal attenuation in culture media versus PBS, the sensor maintained reliable detection capability. The platform successfully detected endogenous DA secreted by skin-derived precursors (SKPs)-derived dopaminergic neurons cultured in 3D brain decellularized extracellular matrix scaffolds. This disposable, cost-effective sensor provides a practical analytical tool for neurotransmitter monitoring in complex 3D tissue models with significant potential for disease diagnosis and drug screening applications. Schematic representation of the fabrication and application of a nanocomposite-modified PCB gold electrode array for dopamine detection in 3D neuronal models. Sensor Fabrication and Surface Modification. A Printed Circuit Board (PCB) gold electrode array is utilized as the transducer platform. The three-electrode system consists of a central Working Electrode (WE), a surrounding Counter Electrode (CE), and a Pseudo-Reference Electrode (Pseudo-RE). The WE surface is modified via drop-casting with a nanocomposite ink comprising carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) and Nafion. The MWCNTs-COOH provide a high-surface-area conductive network, while Nafion acts as a cation-exchange polymer. Construction of the 3D Dopaminergic Neuronal Model. Skin-derived precursor cells (SKPs) are cultured as spheres and subjected to a 14-day neural induction protocol to generate mature dopaminergic neurons (SKPs-DA), confirmed by tyrosine hydroxylase (TH + ) expression. These neurons are subsequently encapsulated within a decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) scaffold to create a biomimetic 3D SKPs-DA neuronal tissue. Cell viability within the scaffold is validated via Live/Dead staining (Calcein-AM/Ethidium homodimer-1). Electrochemical Dopamine (DA) Detection and Sensing Mechanism. The modified electrode exhibits high sensitivity (1.98 μA/μM) and a low limit of detection (202 nM) within a linear range of 1–70 μM. The sensing mechanism leverages the synergistic effects of the nanocomposite: (1) The negatively charged sulfonate groups in Nafion electrostatically attract cationic dopamine (DA + ). (2) Anionic species such as ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA) are repelled by the Nafion layer, enhancing selectivity. (3) Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) shows a distinct oxidation peak at approximately 0.1 V for the SKPs-DA supernatant compared to undifferentiated controls, demonstrating the sensor's efficacy in monitoring neurotransmitter release in complex biological matrices. The extensive application of doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX) in cultivation industry concerns regarding its potential ecological ramifications. Electrocatalysis has emerged as a safe and efficient method for antibiotic removal from water. In this study, Ni/MWCNTs-COOH/Ti composite electrodes were prepared using anodic oxidation and constant-current electrodeposition techniques for the cathodic electrocatalytic degradation of DOX. The electrodes were characterized and evaluated using SEM, XRD , and XPS analysis . Under optimized conditions, 75.49 % of DOX was eliminated within 60 min with an energy consumption of 0.66 kWh/m 3 . Even after ten successive degradation cycles, the degradation rate of DOX remained at 70.78 %, confirming the exceptional stability of the electrodes. LC-MS analysis was employed to identify intermediates formed during the DOX degradation process. The results revealed that the hybrid orbital coordination structure formed by vacant d orbitals and d orbitals on the exoelectronic structure of Ni enhances catalytic activity and electrochemical stability. And the exposed reactive groups on the outer surface of MWCNTs-COOH, acting synergistically with Ni. Furthermore, the composite cathode generates reactive H ⁎ and the anode generates ·OH, resulting in a synergistic coupling that further enhances catalytic activity. This study presents a novel approach for addressing antibiotic contamination through environmental remediation.

GO/CNTs composite membranes with fine hierarchical nanostructure were facilely fabricated by intercalation with 1D carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) into 2D graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets for efficient organic wastewater treatment. By characterization results of XRD, Raman, FTIR, TEM and water contact angle, MWCNTs-COOH was successfully to be intercalated into GO lamellar interlayers with grafting reactions, which would improve water permeated flux and stability of membrane. The influences of GO/CNTs ratios, loading amounts, CNTs types and support types on the membrane separation performance were systematically investigated towards methylene blue dye solution. For the GO/CNTs composite membranes prepared under the optimized conditions, the permeated flux of 34.4 L m −2 h -1 and rejection over 99.7 % were obtained towards methylene blue solutions under the transmembrane pressure difference of 0.9 bar, respectively. Compared with pristine GO membrane, it exhibited a nearly 10-fold water permeated flux improvement meanwhile maintaining high rejection. Moreover, the electrostatic interaction and size exclusion effects were synergistically contributed to be responsible for the efficiently separation properties of the GO/CNTs membranes towards different positively/negatively charged dyes and neutral organic molecules. Such the GO/CNTs membranes also exhibited good chemical stability for acid resistance with highly efficient separation performance.

A high-sensitivity electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor was conducted to detect carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Nanocomposites of graphene oxide/carboxylated multiwall carbon nanotubes/gold/cerium oxide nanoparticles (GO/MWCNTs-COOH/Au@CeO2) were used as antibody carriers and sensing platforms to modify on glassy carbon electrodes (GCE). CeO2 nanoparticles were first exploited as an ECL luminescent material and the possible ECL mechanism was proposed in this work. GO/MWCNTs-COOH was used as a loading matrix for CeO2 nanoparticles because of the superior conductivity and large specific surface area. Au nanoparticles were further deposited on this matrix to attach anti-CEA and enhance the sensitivity of immunosensor. The proposed sensing platform showed excellent cathodic ECL performance and sensitive response to CEA. The effects of experimental conditions on the ECL performance were investigated. The proposed immunosensor showed the broad linear range (0.05–100 ng/mL) and the low detection limit (LOD, 0.02 ng/mL, signal-to-noise ratio = 3) according to the selected experimental conditions. The excellent analysis performance for determination of CEA in the human serum samples simplied this immunosensor displayed high sensitivity and excellent repeatability. More importantly, this conducted immunosensor broadens the use scope of CeO2 nanoparticles.
