Self-Reduction Synthesis of New MXene/Ag Composites with Unexpected Electrocatalytic Activity

Zhiwei Zhang,Hanning Li,Guodong Zou,Carlos Fernandez,Baozhong Liu,Qingrui Zhang,Jie Hu,Qiuming Peng

Differing from graphene, the activated groups on the surface of layered two-dimensional titanium carbide (MXene) materials bestow superiority to self-assemble some novel MXene derivatives with intriguing chemical/physical properties. Here we first report a series of new MXene-Ag composites by directly mixing AgNO3 and alkalization-intercalated MXene (alk-MXene, Ti3C2(OH/ONa)2) solution containing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) at room temperature, in which an analogous urchin-shaped MXene-Ag0.9Ti0.1 bimetallic nanowire composite exhibits unexpected electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction. The addition of PVP solution induces the formation of 5-fold nanotwin Ag seeds, which then grow into Ag/Ti (Ag0.9Ti0.1) bimetallic nanowires. The unique bimetallic nanowires favor a four-electron transfer process, and exhibit high current density and good stability by offering numerous oxygen adsorption sites and shortening the diffusion path of adsorbed oxygen. The results represent a new step for the electrocatalytic applications of MXene materials, and also motivate enthusiasm in the quest for new MXene derivations.

Mengdi Li,Shiqiang Ouyang,Yichi Liu,Yiting Wu,Zihan Hu,Feijie Wang,Shufeng Ma,Liqiang Wang

In recent years, MXene has attracted significant attention for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding due to its unique layered structure and excellent conductivity. However, its mechanical limitations pose challenges for practical implementation. In this study, a lightweight, anisotropic MXene@Ag/wood aerogel composite is fabricated by integrating MXene with silver nanoparticles and loading it onto the cellulose framework of wood aerogels (WAs). The WAs are derived from natural wood through an eco-friendly delignification process. The composite leverages the 3D porous structure of natural wood and the high conductivity of MXene, while the incorporation of silver nanoparticles further enhances its EMI shielding performance, achieving a shielding effectiveness of up to 71.15 dB. It also exhibits a desirable low density of 0.065 g cm − 3 and high SSE/t value of 4904.75 dB cm 2 g −1 , demonstrating excellent lightweight properties. Its anisotropic structure results in direction-dependent shielding, which can be adjusted by material orientation, offering flexibility for diverse applications. Moreover, strong triboelectric nanogenerator output highlights its potential in flexible electronics. This composite holds promising applications in high-frequency circuits, communication systems, and aerospace, reducing EMI interference and enhancing system stability and safety. This study introduces a new strategy for developing lightweight, efficient EMI shielding materials.

Engineering the PS@MXene@Ag composite for ultrasensitive SERS-based detection of organic pollutant

Jinping Tang,Fuqiang Qian,Yuhai Wang,Chunxu Wang,Yuan Chai,Dewen Kong,Jin Wang

By integrating the photonic nanojet effect of polystyrene microsphere (PS), the charge transfer capability of MXene nanosheets, and the electromagnetic field enhancement induced by Ag nanoparticles, the PS@MXene@Ag composite substrate exhibited outstanding SERS sensitivity. • The SERS performance of the PS@MXene@Ag substrate was evaluated using 2-mercaptopyridine as a probe molecule, achieving a detection limit as low as 1.24 × 10 −12  M, with the SERS performance factor (SPF) up to 5.0 × 10(Gueguen et al., 2000 [7] ) . In addition, the SERS substrate demonstrated satisfactory results in signal uniformity, batch-to-batch reproducibility, and long-term stability. • PS@MXene@Ag composite successfully detected thiram and methyl blue on practical sample surfaces (orange and fish), achieving satisfactory recovery rates. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy has emerged as a powerful analytical technique for the sensitive detection of hazardous molecules, owing to its ultranarrow spectral linewidths and highly specific molecular fingerprinting capability. Herein, we designed a reliable SERS substrate consisting of polystyrene microspheres (PS), Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets, and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) for the sensitive detection of various organic pollutants. By integrating the photonic nanojet effect of PS, the charge transfer capability of MXene nanosheets, and the electromagnetic field enhancement induced by Ag NPs, the PS@MXene@Ag composite substrate exhibited outstanding SERS sensitivity, along with excellent reproducibility and signal uniformity. As a result, the limit of detection (LOD) for 2-mercaptopyridine (2-Mpy) was as low as 1.24 × 10 −12  M, with the SERS performance factor (SPF) of up to 5.0 × 10 7 . Moreover, the SERS substrate maintained good stability after storage for four weeks. In addition, the PS@MXene@Ag composite was successfully applied to the detection of other organic pollutants, including thiram and methylene blue (MB). The calibration results revealed a good linear relationship between the logarithm of concentration and the corresponding SERS intensity, with correlation coefficients (R 2 ) of 0.99 and 0.98, respectively. The LODs for thiram and MB were calculated to be 1.96 × 10 −10  M and 2.33 × 10 −10  M, respectively, and satisfactory recovery rates were obtained in practical sample analyses (orange peel and fish skin). These results demonstrate that the fabricated PS@MXene@Ag SERS substrate has promising potential for the detection of organic molecular pollutants. Efficient interfacial self-assembled MXene/Ag NPs film nanocarriers for SERS-traceable drug delivery

Chen Yi,Jiang Cailing,Huang Feixiang,Yu Zizhen,Jiang Li

Combining the unique advantages of two-dimensional transition metal carbon/nitrogen compounds (MXene) and the excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance of noble metal materials, MXene/Ag NPs films were proposed as nanocarriers for SERS-traceable drug delivery. The films were prepared by two-step self-assembly on positively charged silicon wafers using virtue of the high evaporation of ethyl acetate, the Marangoni effect, and an oil/water/oil three-phase system. With 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) as the probe molecule, the SERS detection limit was 10 −8  M and had shown a good linear relationship in the range of 10 −8 –10 −3  M. Simultaneously, the film had good uniformity, repeatability, and stability. When Ti 3 C 2 T x /Ag NPs films were used as nanocarriers, the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded onto the surface through 4-MBA, and the tracking and monitoring were realized by SERS. The addition of glutathione (GSH) triggered the thiol exchange reaction, resulting in the shedding of 4-MBA from the surface of the film, which indirectly achieved the efficient release of DOX. Furthermore, the loading of DOX and the drug release effect triggered by GSH maintained a certain stability in serum, which provided a potential possibility for the subsequent loading and release of drugs by films with three-dimensional structures as scaffolds in biological therapy. MXene/Ag-decorated 3D spacer fabric with multi-modal warmth for all-day personal thermal management

Guifang He,Xiang Liu,Junbao Yan,Mingwei Tian,Xiansheng Zhang,Lijun Qu,Fanggang Ning

To address the challenges of personal thermoregulation, this study proposes a multi-modal thermal management strategy based on a three-dimensional (3D) spacer Janus fabric (F-M/A-JF) asymmetrically decorated with MXene and silver. By leveraging the 3D structure's static air-trapping and MXene's low mid-infrared emissivity (0.419), the system achieves a 5.6 °C increase in simulated skin temperature indoors without energy consumption. Under simulated sunlight (100 mW cm −2 ), the Janus design exhibits a differential response—reaching 79.8 °C on the MXene side versus 62.9 °C on the Ag side—providing an “adaptive mode” to prevent outdoor overheating. Owing to the high electrical conductivity of MXene, the fabric achieves a surface temperature of 137.3 °C at a low voltage of only 5 V and demonstrates a high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of up to 57 dB. The “MXene Guardian” strategy ensures functional longevity over 20 washing cycles and 95.3% self-cleaning efficiency while preserving 93.8% of the original moisture permeability (5.14 mg cm −2  h −1 ). This robust system offers an energy-saving design paradigm for next-generation smart textiles in dynamic environments.

Fabrication of Fluorosilicone Rubber/MXene/ag Dielectric Elastomer Composites With Enhanced Electromechanical Performances for Flexible Actuator Applications

Yu Zeng,Lu Tang

Dielectric elastomer has attracted much attention for its promising application in soft robots, actuators, and generators. Nevertheless, fluorosilicone rubber (FSR), as a typical dielectric elastomer matrix, possesses inherently low dielectric permittivity, severely limiting its electromechanical actuation performance. To address this issue, two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanosheets and zero-dimensional (0D) Ag nanoparticles were incorporated into FSR via mechanical mixing and hot-pressing to prepare FSR/MXene/Ag composites. Results show that MXene and Ag were dispersed well in the FSR matrix and the composites were thermally stable up to 390°C. A relatively high dielectric permittivity of 16.63 (2.49 times of pure FSR) was achieved at 10 3 Hz for the composite with 1.2 phr (parts per hundred of rubber) MXene and 3.2 phr Ag, while the loss tangent remained below 0.012. This can be attributed to the synergistic effects of the hybrid fillers where the 0D Ag nanoparticles effectively suppress the agglomeration of 2D MXene nanosheets, while the heterogeneous interfaces between MXene/Ag and FSR significantly enhance interfacial polarization. Furthermore, the FSR/MXene/Ag composites not only show improved tensile strength and elongation at break with decreased elastic modulus, but also exhibit enhanced electromechanical sensitivity, achieving a large electromechanical strain of 16.05% (205% increment of pure FSR) under an electric field of 40 kV mm −1 . This work provides a feasible strategy for designing dielectric elastomers with enhanced electromechanical performances.

Ultra-sensitive and robust MXene/Ag-Ag nanocomposite-based conformal temperature sensor for broad-range thermal monitoring

Yingjie Niu,Ziqi Wang,Zhenxiang Xiong,Yuanyuan Tan,Zhijian Meng,Dejin Yan,Hui Cheng,Chenglin Yi,Kaifu Zhang

Temperature sensors play a vital role in fields such as food safety, medical diagnostics, and aerospace. However, the development of conformal temperature sensors with high sensitivity, low cost, broad detection range, and reliable performance under extreme conditions remains a significant challenge due to limitations in materials and fabrication technologies. In this study, we synthesized titanium carbide/silver (MXene/Ag) nanocomposites through electrostatic adsorption and in-situ self-reduction, and formulated a hybrid ink suitable for aerosol jet printing (AJP). The MXene/Ag-Ag-0.28 % ink, prepared with the optimal MXene/Ag and Ag mass ratio, demonstrated outstanding printability with a resolution of up to 10 μm, along with excellent electrical conductivity and mechanical durability. The printed traces achieved a conductivity as high as 2.32 × 10 7 S/m, representing a 56 % improvement over traces printed with Ag ink. Furthermore, the resistance of the printed traces changed by only 2.8 % after 1000 bending cycles, which is 3.22 times more stable than Ag traces. In addition, the printed sensors exhibited a wide temperature detection range from −50 °C to 270 °C, with a response delay as short as 90 ms and a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) as high as 3.03 × 10 −3 /°C at 30 °C, which is 24 % higher than that of pure Ag ink. The sensor also demonstrated reliable responsiveness under extreme conditions such as open flame and exposure to liquid nitrogen. Moreover, high-quality conformal temperature sensors were successfully fabricated on a variety of complex curved surfaces, highlighting the advanced manufacturing capabilities of AJP. Notably, conformal sensors were also integrated onto the surface of a turning tool for real-time temperature monitoring during the machining of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP). These results offer valuable insights into the potential of AJP technology for fabricating high-performance, conformal electronic sensors.

In situ synthesis of MXene/Ag nanocomposites based flexible SERS substrates on PDMS for detection on fruit surfaces

Shuang Xiong,Tao He,Tao Zhou,Dalei Wang,Yueyue Wang,Chaoqing Dai,Wei Liu

Pesticides are often overused in production and life, which harms the environment and human health. However, the current tools for detecting pesticides are not effective enough due to lower flexibility and stability. With regards to this, we synthesized a flexible substrate of PDMS modified by MXene (Ti 3 C 2 Tx)/Ag. The MXene-noble metal composite substrate can detect 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4MBA) at a low concentration of 1.0 × 10 −11 M. Furthermore, MXene can inhibit the oxidation of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and efficiently localize the molecules to be tested within the hot spots. In particular, the flexibility of the substrate enables the detection of trace amounts of thiabendazole (TBZ) by collecting samples directly from uneven surfaces such as fruits and vegetables. The substrate is also capable of detecting a mixture of TBZ and 4MBA simultaneously. Using intrinsic Raman peak of PDMS as the internal standard can eliminate the influence of environmental factors on the detection results, which makes the detection results more quantitative. The resultant noble metal-semiconductor substrates show great potential applications in food safety and environmental monitoring fields.

High performance portable sensor based on excellent conductive composite MXene@Ag-MEL for detection of gallic acid in foods

Xingxing Zeng,Dongnan Zhang,Simin Chen,Xiaozi Huang,Zhenxia Zhao,Xin Li,Baoyu Liu

Rapid and accurate detection of bioactive phenolic compounds in food is crucial for assessing nutritional value and ensuring quality. Gallic acid (GA) is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound found in plant-based foods such as grapes, mangoes, and tea leaves. It possesses significant antioxidants, antibacterial, and anticancer properties, making it a key target in research on food nutrition and functional components. However, many sensors are limited by slow surface dynamics, so the development of advanced sensing materials is a great challenge. In this study, a high specific surface area MEL zeolite (MEL) is prepared (471.24 m 2  g −1 ) and complexed with highly conductive Ag species and two-dimensional MXene nanosheets (MXene) to construct a novel screen-printed sensing platform (MXene/Ag/MEL/chitosan (CS)/screen-printed electrode (SPE). The novel sensor notably possessed excellent GA detection performance, exhibiting an extremely low limit of detection (LOD = 0.5 μM) and a wide detection range (1 μM-50 mM). Further, a portable GA sensing system is prepared by integrating the above screen-printed platform with miniaturized circuits, which showed similar analytical results to the standard high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method (the recovery rate ranges from 95.75% to 97.93%). This work not only presents advanced sensing material but also provides a practical and convenient platform for rapid food analysis and dietary assessment.

Flexible Transparent Bifunctional Capacitive Sensors with Superior Areal Capacitance and Sensing Capability based on PEDOT:PSS/MXene/Ag Grid Hybrid Electrodes

Tao Cheng,Xuan-Li Yang,Sheng Yang,Lang Li,Zhong-Ting Liu,Jie Qu,Chao-Fu Meng,Xiang-Chun Li,Yi-Zhou Zhang,Wen-Yong Lai

Flexible transparent supercapacitors (FTSs) have aroused considerable attention. Nonetheless, balancing energy storage capability and transparency remains challenging. Herein, a new type of FTSs with both excellent energy storage and superior transparency is developed based on PEDOT:PSS/MXene/Ag grid ternary hybrid electrodes. The hybrid electrodes can synergistically utilize the high optoelectronic properties of Ag grids, the excellent capacitive performance of MXenes, and the superior chemical stability of PEDOT:PSS, thus, simultaneously demonstrating excellent optoelectronic properties ( T : ≈89%, R s : ≈39 Ω sq −1 ), high areal specific capacitance, superior mechanical softness, and excellent anti-oxidation capability. Due to the excellent comprehensive performances of the hybrid electrodes, the resulting FTSs exhibit both high optical transparency (≈71% and ≈60%) and large areal specific capacitance (≈3.7 and ≈12 mF cm −2 ) besides superior energy storage capacity ( P : 200.93, E : 0.24 µWh cm −2 ). Notably, the FTSs show not only excellent energy storage but also exceptional sensing capability, viable for human activity recognition. This is the first time to achieve FTSs that combine high transparency, excellent energy storage and good sensing all-in-one, which make them stand out from conventional flexible supercapacitors and promising for next-generation smart flexible energy storage devices.

Efficient gold recovery from low concentrated Au(S2O3)23− solution through enhanced photocatalysis via photothermal and surface plasmon resonance assistance on MoS2/MXene/Ag

Chang Liu,Huan Zhang,Qinghan Wang,Jie Wu,Peng Chen,Shaoxian Song,Chun Zhan,Lei Wang,Feifei Jia

Thiosulfate technique is the most promising method to recover gold from electronic waste (e-waste) and natural ores due to its non-toxicity and high leaching efficiency. However, the bad affinity between Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3− and traditional adsorbents leads to unsatisfied gold recovery performance from leaching solution . In this work, highly efficient recovery of gold from low concentrated Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3− solution was achieved through enhanced photocatalysis process on a novel MoS 2 /MXene/Ag adsorbent. During recovery procedure, Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3− was in-situ reduced to Au 0 by photogenerated electrons and then anchored on MoS 2 /MXene/Ag. Under Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3− concentration <10 ppm, over 99 % gold recovery performance could achieve within 2 h. Experimental tests have proved that MXene made fully use of near infrared (NIR) light energy to exhibit better photothermal effect, and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag can simultaneously facilitate the separation of electron-hole pairs on MoS 2 . By means of external temperature input and rapid charge carrier transmission, plenty of electrons were excited from MoS 2 /MXene/Ag for Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3− recovery. This work paved a pathway for efficient Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3− recovery, which catered to the demand for green production of gold in the future.
