Solvent-assisted self-assembly to fabricate a ternary flexible free-standing polyaniline@MXene-CNTs electrode for high-performance supercapacitors

Xing Wu,Wenxuan Hu,Jiahuan Qiu,Biao Geng,Miao Du,Qiang Zheng

MXene , a kind of booming two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials , has exhibited a promising application on free-standing high-performance supercapacitors. However, researches on MXene-based cathodes are still under development because its susceptibility to oxidation . Herein, a flexible free-standing polyaniline@MXene-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) film was prepared by a delicately-designed solvent-assisted self-assembly method followed with a vacuum filtration process. The zero-dimensional (0D) polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticle , which is often used as a cathode nanomaterial, was coated on the surface of 2D MXene nanosheets by solvent-assisted self-assembly to prevent MXene from oxidation and provide high specific capacitance simultaneously. The one-dimensional (1D) CNTs were introduced to endow the composite with well mechanical strength and flexibility. The ternary composite film delivers an excellent mechanical performance with a tensile strength of 99.4 MPa, a high specific capacitance of 463 F g −1 at 5 mV s −1 , and good cyclic stability with 92 % capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. The asymmetric supercapacitor device assembled with the ternary composite film as cathode and the prepared free-standing MXene-CNTs as anode achieves a high energy density of 10 Wh kg −1 and an exceptional power density of 2808 W kg −1 .

Selenium-doped high-entropy MXene@CNTs with abundant vacancies as bifunctional electrocatalysts for boosting redox kinetics in lithium–sulfur batteries

Chengyang Zhang,Guoqiang Xia,Chenxi Sun,Mengmeng Zhen

Se-doped high-entropy MXene@CNT with abundant oxygen vacancies is fabricated as bifunctional electrocatalyst. • The composite accelerates polysulfide redox and suppresses Li dendrites via optimized electronic and 3D conductive structure. • Cells achieve ultra-stable long cycling, high sulfur loading performance and a 2.0 Ah pouch cell. Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) hold exceptional promise for high-energy-density energy storage, yet their practical deployment is severely hindered by sluggish sulfur redox kinetics, polysulfide shuttling, and uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth. High-entropy MXene exhibits unique compositional diversity and synergistic electronic effects, but their catalytic activity remain insufficient for robust polysulfide regulation. Herein, we develop a selenium-doped high-entropy MXene@CNT (Se-HE-MX@C) bifunctional electrocatalyst with Se-induced vacancy defects to synergistically regulate cathode and anode redox reactions. Se-doping generates abundant cation vacancies and optimizes the electronic structure, strengthening polysulfide chemisorption and lowering the energy barrier for polysulfide conversion. The CNT interwoven network constructs a continuous 3D conductive pathway, accelerating electron/ion diffusion and mitigating structural degradation. Electrochemical and in-situ characterizations reveal that Se-HE-MX@C significantly promotes Li 2 S nucleation/decomposition, enhances Li + diffusion kinetics, and induces uniform lithium deposition. As a result, the LSB with Se-HE-MX@C-modified separator exhibits excellent rate performance and ultralong cycling stability (a low-capacity decay rates of merely 0.047% per cycle after 700 cycles at 1.0C). Moreover, The Se-HE-MX@C-based pouch cell delivers an ultra-high capacity of ∼2.0 Ah. This work elucidates the structure–activity relationship between defect engineering, high-entropy regulation, and bifunctional electrocatalysis, offering a rational design principle for advanced electrocatalysts in high-performance LSBs. Nacre-mimetic PVA/MXene/CNTs films via covalent crosslinking: Synergistic mechanics, photothermal conversion, and radiative cooling for sustainable energy applications

Jinping Guo,Guangyu Zhu,Xi Lu,Yanxia Cao,Yanyu Yang,Jianfeng Wang,Wanjie Wang

Efficient utilization of clean solar thermal energy remains for addressing the global energy challenges. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene exhibits exceptional thermal conductivity and mechanical strength, however, its incorporation into polymer composites is hindered by weak interfacial interactions and poor dispersion. This study presents a covalent engineering strategy to construct MXene/carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrid fillers through esterification crosslinking, where polyacrylic acid (PAA) bridges hydroxyl-rich polydopamine-coated CNTs and MXene nanosheets. The resulting polyvinyl alcohol/MXene/CNTs (PMC) composite films fabricated through solution casting exhibit a unique gradient deposition architecture. The optimized PMC-10 film has excellent mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 216 MPa and a Young's modulus of 3.07 GPa, which are 2.8 and 5.1 times higher than those of the original PVA, respectively. Meanwhile, the composite simultaneously exhibits dual-mode thermal regulation capabilities: daytime photothermal heating enhancement of 45.43 °C and nighttime radiative cooling reduction of 7.47 °C. This diurnal thermal gradient enables continuous 24-h thermoelectric generation. Furthermore, the PMC films display rapid ice-melting capabilities, efficient heat dissipation, and improved flame retardancy. This work establishes a paradigm for designing 1D/2D covalent hybrid fillers in polymer composites that simultaneously enhance mechanical properties and multifunctional performance, significantly expanding their potential for sustainable energy applications.

Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Multifunctional NR/MXene/CNTs Composite Films with Exceptional Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Performances and Excellent Mechanical Properties

Hao Wu,Chuanbiao Zhu,Xiaolong Li,Xinpeng Hu,Heng Xie,Xiang Lu,Jin-Ping Qu

With the rapid advance of electronics, the light, flexible, and multifunctional composite films with high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness and excellent thermal management are highly desirable for next-generation portable and wearable electronic devices. Herein, a series of flexible and ultrathin natural rubber/MXene/carbon nanotubes (NR/MXene/CNTs) composite films with sandwich structure are constructed layer by layer through a facile vacuum-assisted filtration method for EMI shielding and Joule heating application. The fabricated NR/MXene/CNTs-50 composite film, with NR/MXene as inner layer and NR/CNTs as out layers, not only has high EMI shielding efficiency, but also has excellent comprehensive mechanical properties at the thickness of only 200 µm. In addition, the superior environmental durability, high electrothermal conversion efficiency, hydrophobicity, and fine performance stability after periodic cyclic bending make the film possess more value in practical application.

Strain Sensors Made of MXene, CNTs, and TPU/PSF Asymmetric Structure Films with Large Tensile Recovery and Applied in Human Health Monitoring

Xiaoyu Cui,Chengjing Miao,Shaowei Lu,Xingmin Liu,Yuxuan Yang,Jingchao Sun

Designing flexible wearable sensors with a wide sensing range, high sensitivity, and high stability is a vulnerable research direction with a futuristic field to study. In this paper, Ti3C2Tx MXene/carbon nanotube (CNT)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/polysulfone (PSF) composite films with excellent sensor performance were obtained by self-assembly of conductive fillers in TPU/PSF porous films with an asymmetric structure through vacuum filtration, and the porous films were prepared by the phase inversion method. The composite films consist of the upper part with finger-like “cavities” filled by MXene/CNTs, which reduces the microcracks in the conductive network during the tensile process, and the lower part has smaller apertures of a relatively dense resin cortex assisting the recovery process. The exclusive layer structure of the MXene/CNTs/TPU/PSF film sensor, with a thickness of 46.95 μm, contains 0.0339 mg/cm2 single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and 0.348 mg/cm2 MXene only, providing functional range (0–80.7%), high sensitivity (up to 1265.18), and excellent stability and durability (stable sensing under 2300 fatigue tests, viable to the initial resistance), endurably cycled under large strains with serious damage to the conductive network. Finally, the MXene/CNTs/TPU/PSF film sensor is usable for monitoring pulse, swallow, tiptoe, and various joint bends in real time and distributing effective electrical signals. This paper implies that the MXene/CNTs/TPU/PSF film sensor has broad prospects in pragmatic applications.
