Electric-magnetic dual-gradient structure design of thin MXene/Fe3O4 films for absorption-dominated electromagnetic interference shielding

Hongwei Zhang,Jiazhe Cheng,Kaiyu Liu,Shou-xiang Jiang,Jichao Zhang,Qian Wang,Chuntao Lan,Hao Jia,Zhaoling Li

The challenge of achieving high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding films, which focuses on electromagnetic waves absorption while maintaining thin thickness, is a crucial endeavor in contemporary electronic device advancement. In this study, we have successfully engineered hybrid films based on MXene nanosheets and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, featuring intricate electric–magnetic dual-gradient structures. Through the collaborative influence of a unique dual-gradient structure equipped with transition and reflection layers, these hybrid films demonstrate favorable impedance matching, abundant loss mechanisms (Ohmic loss, interfacial polarization and magnetic loss), and an “absorb-reflect-reabsorb” process to achieve absorption-dominated EMI shielding capability. Compared with the single conductive gradient structure, the dual-gradient structure effectively enhances the absorption intensity per unit thickness, and thus reduces the thickness of the film. The optimized film demonstrates a remarkable EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 49.98 dB alongside an enhanced absorption coefficient (A) of 0.51 with a thickness of only 180 μm. The thin films with a dual-gradient structure hold promise for crafting absorption-dominated electromagnetic shielding materials, highlighting the potential for advanced electromagnetic protection solutions.

Hierarchical mxene/Fe3O4/cellulose nanofiber composites with layer-by-layer architecture for high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding

Xiaoxuan Tan,Yang He,Chunhong Wang,Yu Zhang,Wenshu Wang,Hanyu Li,Rongrong Yu

The proliferation of electronic devices has made electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding increasingly critical for both device performance and human health protection. Here, we demonstrate a hierarchical composite film that achieves exceptional EMI shielding through the synergistic integration of magnetic nanofibers and MXene nanosheets. By combining electrospinning and layer-by-layer assembly, we fabricate a composite structure where Fe 3 O 4 -loaded cellulose/PAN nanofibers alternate with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene layers, creating multiple heterogeneous interfaces for enhanced electromagnetic wave attenuation. The engineered architecture promotes multiple electromagnetic loss mechanisms through interface polarization, magnetic losses, and multiple internal reflections. The optimized composite exhibits remarkable performance metrics: achieving a thickness-specific shielding efficiency of 118 dB/mm at just 0.18 mm thickness, significantly surpassing current commercial standards. At 0.64 mm thickness, the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness reaches 33.2 dB, effectively blocking over 99.9 % of electromagnetic radiation. Notably, the composite demonstrates exceptional mechanical durability, retaining 96.8 % of its shielding effectiveness after 300 bending cycles. The integration of renewable cellulose and magnetic components with highly conductive MXene not only enhances electromagnetic wave attenuation but also promotes environmental sustainability. This combination of ultra-thin profile, superior shielding performance, and mechanical flexibility, coupled with eco-friendly material selection, provides a promising pathway for EMI protection.

Janus liquid metal@MXene/Fe3O4 nanofiber membranes with polydopamine -confined liquid metal for electromagnetic interference shielding and infrared control

Chunyue Fang,Xiaoxuan Tan,Chunhong Wang,Yang He,Xiaoyuan Pei,Yu Zhang,Sarani binti Zakaria,Guangwei Fu,Jiangang Wang,Li Chen,Kun Liu,Ting Xu,Chuanling Si

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) increasingly constrains the development of flexible and multifunctional electronics materials, yet asymmetric structural design and functional integration remain limited. Here we report a Janus hierarchical membrane, liquid metal@polydopamine-MXene/Fe 3 O 4 @cellulose polyacrylonitrile nanofibers (LM@PDA-MXene/Fe 3 O 4 @CPNF), fabricated by electrospinning a Fe 3 O 4 -doped cellulose/Polyacrylonitrile nanofiber scaffold and vacuum-assisted assembly of MXene intercalated with core-shell LM@PDA nanoparticles. The multiscale architecture couples three loss pathways: a percolated MXene network for conductive loss, LM@PDA spacers that suppress restacking and form microcapacitors for interfacial and dipolar polarization, and a porous magnetic entrance that improves impedance matching. In the X-band, a single 70 μm layer achieved an average EMI shielding effectiveness (SET) of 45.1 dB and a thickness-normalised specific shielding effectiveness (SSE/t) = 8.87 × 10 3 dB cm 2 g -1 , stacking four layers raised SET to 70.8 dB. The membrane also provided orientation-dependent thermal functions, this ultrathin, eco-friendly, and lightweight membrane integrates absorption-dominant EMI shielding with bidirectional thermal management in a single platform, offering a practical route toward electromagnetic protection and infrared control in next-generation wearable electronics.

Facile Preparation of Hierarchical AgNP-Loaded MXene/Fe3O4/Polymer Nanocomposites by Electrospinning with Enhanced Catalytic Performance for Wastewater Treatment

Xinxin Huang,Ran Wang,Tifeng Jiao,Guodong Zou,Fangke Zhan,Juanjuan Yin,Lexin Zhang,Jingxin Zhou,Qiuming Peng

MXene as a kind of two-dimensional nanomaterial has aroused people’s strong research interest because of its excellent properties. In the present study, we introduced a new poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid)/Fe3O4/MXene@Ag nanoparticle composite film fabricated by electrospinning and heat treatment as well as self-reduction reaction process. The obtained composite films showed high self-reduction ability because of the incorporation of MXene flakes. The intercalated MXene flakes in the composite nanofibers were evenly distributed, which not only solved the aggregation problem from MXene dispersion but also could self-reduce Ag nanoparticles in situ in composite materials. In addition, the composite nanofiber films exhibited good fiber structure, thermal stability, and magnetic properties. Moreover, the composite nanofiber films demonstrated excellent catalytic ability and cycle stability to 4-nitrophenol and 2-nitroaniline.

Multi-scale porous bacterial cellulose/MXene/Fe3O4 aerogels via click chemistry for Ku-band electromagnetic absorption and thermal insulation

Xueyue Lyu,Qiu Zhang,Liying Pan,Chenyang Zhang,Xinrui Wang,Jiawei Qi,Guangdong Zhao,Dongyu Zhao

With a rapid advancement of electronic information technology, electromagnetic waves have facilitated information transmission, however, they have also increasingly caused severe electromagnetic interference affecting a normal operation of electronic devices. Consequently, the development of materials exhibiting high-efficiency electromagnetic wave absorption properties to mitigate electromagnetic pollution holds substantial scientific and practical significance. In this study, click chemistry was innovatively employed in the interfacial bonding of composite aerogels. Conductive MXene nanosheets were embedded within the three-dimensional network framework of bacterial cellulose (BC), and then the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were attached to the surface of the substrate through a thiol-ene click chemical reaction, successfully constructing a BC/MXene/Fe 3 O 4 (BMF) composite aerogels with a multi-scale porous structure. The aerogel demonstrates a dual-loss mechanism, combining electrical loss and magnetic losses synergistically, thereby effectively addressing the issue of impedance mismatch. Additionally, its hierarchical pore structure significantly enhances multiple reflections and scattering of electromagnetic waves within the material, extending the propagation path and consequently improving energy dissipation capacity. The results show that the BMF composite aerogels exhibits excellent electromagnetic wave absorption properties. Its minimum reflection loss is −52.80 dB, the maximum effective absorption bandwidth is 5.98 GHz (11.91–17.89 GHz), and the absorption efficiency is 99.999 %, capable of covering most of the Ku band (2–18 GHz). Furthermore, the aerogel possesses lightweight characteristics (density of 0.0150 g/cm 3 ) and favorable thermal insulation properties (thermal conductivity of 0.0293 W·m −1 ·K −1 ). The development of BMF composite aerogels offers a novel approach for electromagnetic shielding materials applicable to the protection of precision electronic equipment and the defense industry applications.

Dendritic cross-linked MXene@Fe3O4 for co-immobilization of HRP/GOX bienzyme system and its application in 2,4-dichlorophenol degradation

Xiaozhou Li,Bin Wu,Zhen Gao,Wei Zhuang

To address the challenges of quantitative immobilization and unavoidable spatial hindrance of multiple enzymes in traditional multi-enzyme cascade immobilization, we developed a novel bienzyme immobilization system based on a hierarchically structured MXene@LDHs@Fe₃O₄ (MLF) carrier. The MLF composite, with a high theoretical surface area (∼300 m 2 /g), adjustable interlayer spacing (10–50 nm), and strong magnetization (20 emu/g), provides an ideal support for high-capacity enzyme loading. The system was fabricated through the assembly of MXene nanosheets with layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, integrating horseradish peroxidase (HRP) on the MLF core, a polydopamine (PDA) interfacial barrier, and surface-immobilized glucose oxidase (GOx) through melamine-genipin mediated dendritic cross-linking. This spatially organized catalytic architecture enables quantitative enzyme loading while minimizing spatial hindrance, thereby enhancing catalytic efficiency. The co-immobilized bienzyme reactor (GOX@PDA@HRP@MLF) achieved loading capacities of 272.46 mg/g for HRP and 414.33 mg/g for GOx, with an activity recovery of 85.3 % during 2,4-dichlorophenol degradation. The immobilized enzymes retained ∼80 % of their initial activity after five operational cycles. Under optimized conditions, the GOX@PDA@HRP@MLF material achieved a degradation rate of 4.6 for 2,4-dichlorophenol in a continuous flow system, representing a ∼21-fold increase in space-time yield compared to random multi-enzyme immobilization on single-layer resin materials. These results demonstrate that the dendritic cross-linking strategy employed in this study can serve as a universal method for multi-enzyme immobilization, with significant potential for industrial applications.
