Electrochemical and photoelectrochemical (PEC) oxygen evolution reactions (OER) are receiving considerable attention owing to their important roles in the overall water splitting reaction. In this contribution, ternary NiFeCo-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoplates were in situ hybridized with Ti3C2Tx (the MXene phase) via a simple solvothermal process during which Ti3C2Tx was partially oxidized to form anatase TiO2 nanoparticles. The obtained Ti3C2Tx/TiO2/NiFeCo-LDH composite (denoted as TTL) showed a superb OER performance as compared with pristine NiFeCo-LDH and comercial IrO2 catalyst, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a potential of 1.55 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE) in 0.1 M KOH. Importantly, the composite was further deposited on a standard BiVO4 film to construct a TTL/BiVO4 photoanode which showed a significantly enhanced photocurrent density of 2.25 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE under 100 mW cm−2 illumination. The excellent PEC-OER performance can be attributed to the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles which broadened the light adsorption to improve the generation of electron/hole pairs, while the ternary LDH nanoplates were efficient hole scavengers and the metallic Ti3C2Tx nanosheets were effective shuttles for transporting electrons/ions. Our in situ synthetic method provides a facile way to prepare multi-component catalysts for effective water oxidation and solar energy conversion.

Biodegradable or eco-friendly triboelectric materials from natural polymers are considered promising and viable alternative for the development of green triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Yet, they are mostly struggling from poor mechanical properties and low triboelectric output performance. In this work, we developed a highly efficient NH 2 -MXene/TiO 2 @sodium alginate (NMTS) composite film with NH 2 -MXene/TiO 2 as a filler and sodium alginate (SA) as a matrix and a TENG based on this composite film (NMTS-TENG) was constructed. The tribo-positive characteristic of SA was enhanced by adding NH 2 -MXene and TiO 2 . Different loaded content of the NH 2 -MXene and TiO 2 were explored and optimized to improve mechanical properties of the composite film and the output performance of NMTS-TENG. The microstructure and dielectric constant of the composite films were well characterized to investigate the enhancement mechanism. Under optimal conditions, the tensile strength of the composite film reaches up to 175.0 MPa and surpass the pure SA film. The NMTS-TENG shows the output performance with an open-circuit voltage of 357.6 V and short-circuit current of 55.1 µA, and the output peak power increases by 9.3 times compared with pure SA-based TENG. In addition, we developed a TENG device to harvest ocean wave energy for self-powered cathodic protection. The electrochemical test results reveal that the open circuit potential of the protected Q235 carbon steel can decrease by 74 mV and the corrosion potential decrease by 146.5 mV, indicating the good anti-corrosion properties. This study provides a promising method to develop high-performance biomaterials based TENG and expands the practical application of SA in the field of the electrochemical cathodic protection.

It is of great significance to detect methanol in human exhaled breath since it may cause neurological disorders. In this study, N-doped Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was synthesized by annealing and nitrogen doping in clay-like Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Then, TiO 2 nanospheres was generated in situ on the surface of N-doped Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene to provide adsorption and reaction sites for methanol. Based on the synergistic effects of electronic properties and gas adsorption, the N-Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/TiO 2 exhibits high responsiveness and excellent selectivity to methanol at room temperature. Moreover, the detection limit is 0.1194 ppm. In addition, the adsorption and oxidation process of methanol on the N-Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/TiO 2 was explored by in situ infrared spectra testing to reveal that the oxygen vacancy on the surface of N-Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/TiO 2 plays an important role in the selective detection of methanol. This experiment provides a feasible solution for the detection of methanol gas in exhaled breath at room temperature.

Solar interfacial evaporation technology, as an emerging sustainable water purification strategy, provides both an economical and environmentally friendly way to solve water resource problems. However, it still faces certain limitations and challenges in treating polluted wastewater containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this paper, MXene-TiO 2 -Ag composites were embedded into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel system using kapok fibres as biomass templates, and a bifunctional and environmentally friendly solar evaporation system (MTAH) was successfully constructed for both efficient solar freshwater production and phenol removal (typical VOC). The MTAH evaporator demonstrated excellent evaporation performance with an evaporation rate as high as 3.09 kg m −2 h −1 and a photothermal conversion efficiency as high as 93.16 % under 1 solar light intensity. The self-growth property of TiO 2 on the MXene surface endowed the evaporator with the ability of photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. In addition, the incorporation of trace Ag nanoparticles played positive roles, which not only significantly enhanced the photothermal conversion performance of MXene, but also broadened the light response range of TiO 2 and effectively suppressed the complexation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The MTAH evaporator shows an excellent removal rate of 91.84 % for high VOC concentrations (100 ppm phenol), effectively avoiding secondary contamination of the condensate. The finding paved the course for the sustainable and eco-friendly solution for freshwater scarcity.

Tetracycline (TC) as a common antibiotic has adverse effects on human healthy and biological survival. In this study, a novel MXene/TiO 2 /Fe hybrid was designed and successfully synthesized by combination method of calcination and hydrothermal reduction. The photocatalysts were characterized by PXRD , SEM , TEM , VSM and XPS, etc. It was found that MXene/TiO 2 /Fe exhibited 2D multilayer structure like MXene. The in-situ synthesized TiO 2 through calcinating MXene exhibited an octahedral biconical structure with exposed (001) and (101) facets. Surface heterojunction of (001) and (101) facets was formed within TiO 2 , which enhanced the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. The residual MXene could play a role in co-catalyst to capture the photo-generated electrons from TiO 2 . Moreover, Fe nanoparticles not only optimize the band gap structure and increase the specific surface area, but also store the electrons as a good electrons acceptor, which further promote the separation of electrons and holes. The TC removal efficiency of optimal MXene/TiO 2 /Fe could reach 92% within 120 min. Moreover, the influence of external environment factors such as pH, catalyst dosages and common anions were investigated in detail. Mechanism analysis show that h + , •OH and •O 2 − are the main active substances. Finally, the degradation pathways were proposed according to LC-MS.

Hydrogen becomes an important clean energy origin, which will explode in open fire at a certain concentration. This leads to great property and personal safety hazards in the process of hydrogen storage, transportation and leakage. Low temperature and low concentration hydrogen detection is very necessary. In this paper, MXene-TiO 2 -ZnO ternary composites were successfully prepared by one-step in-situ oxidation method using MXene and Zn(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O as precursors for 1h. The microstructure of the samples was characterized by XPS, TEM, SEM and Raman, and their gas sensing properties were tested. The results show that the Ti 3 C 2 T x -TiO 2 -ZnO structure exhibits a layered accordion-like morphology. Under room temperature (RT 25 °C) and UV light irradiation, the response value of MTZ-1 sample to 1000 ppm hydrogen reaches 73.39 %, which is 96.8 % higher than that of pure Ti 3 C 2 T X . At the optimum operating temperature (100 °C), the response value of MTZ-1 to 1000 ppm hydrogen reached 96.77 %, the detection limit was as low as 1 ppm, and the response value was 1.7 %. The results show that the formation of TiO 2 -ZnO heterojunction, the retention of Ti 3 C 2 T x layered structure and UV irradiation are the main reasons to improve the gas sensing performance (GSP). In this paper, the formation of TiO 2 -ZnO heterojunction, the retention of MXene layered structure and the synergistic enhancement of gas sensitivity by UV excitation were revealed by systematic characterization and mechanism analysis. This research provides a new idea for the development of low energy consumption and high sensitivity room temperature hydrogen sensor, which has important practical application value.

The uneven lithium deposition on Cu current collector and poor interface stability of lithium metal/electrolyte would lead to rapid capacity decay and potential safety risks, which severely hinder the practical applications of lithium metal batteries. In this work, the in-situ derived Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/TiO 2 (labeled as MXene/TiO 2 ) composite with favorable lithiophilicity and conductivity is applied as modified layer on Cu foil current collector (labeled as MXene/TiO 2 @Cu) to obtain the uniform and dense lithium plating. Compared with bare Cu and commercial TiO 2 nanoparticles modified Cu current collector (labeled as Nano TiO 2 @Cu), the MXene/TiO 2 @Cu combines abundant lithium nucleation sites and improved conductivity, which could promote uniform lithium plating and stripping at high current density and effectively avoid the generation of dead lithium or lithium dendrites. As a result, the MXene/TiO 2 @Cu-based symmetric battery could stably cycle for 2000 h at high current density of 3 mA cm −2 with capacity of 3 mAh cm −2 , and the MXene/TiO 2 @Cu-Li‖LiFePO 4 full battery could maintain the high reversible capacity of 104.0 mAh g −1 at 1 C after 500 cycles. This work provides an effective and novel protection strategy for Cu current collector, which is critical for the design of lithium metal batteries with favorite rate capability at high current density.

High dielectric constant and breakdown strength are crucial for high-energy-density polymer/ceramic composites. Anatase-TiO2 with low dielectric constant and V2C MXene with high work function are not satisfactory fillers. In the present work, V2C–TiO2 hybrid filler was in situ synthesized, followed by fabricating poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/V2C–TiO2 composites via solution cast. Compared with PVDF/TiO2 and PVDF/V2C composites, PVDF/V2C–TiO2 composites have an improved high dielectric constant, depressed low dielectric loss, and maintained high breakdown strength. High overall electric traits are ascribed to the synergy of conductive V2C and semiconductive TiO2. Outer and inner surfaces of V2C were ornament-combined by anatase-TiO2 particles having surface point defects as electron traps, contributing to low interface leakage conduction. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, nontypical V–F–Ti-bonding-induced dipole enhancement and Fermi-level (EF) overlapping-induced high electron localization mechanisms improve the dielectric response. Ternary composite with 10 wt % hybrid filler exhibits a dielectric constant of ∼99, a dielectric loss of ∼0.24 at 1 kHz, and a breakdown strength of ∼189 MV/m. This work might enable large-scale preparation of promising polymer/MXene composite dielectrics.

MXene-based materials have received increasing attention in gas sensing due to their excellent electrical conductivity and favorable surface properties. However, their practical applications are severely limited by low sensitivity, limited selectivity and poor stability. In this study, a robust sandwich-like 2D/0D/2D MXene@TiO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 ternary integrated heterojunction is designed and constructed. The architecture effectively promotes charge transfer across multiple heterointerfaces (metal/semiconductor interface, semiconductor/semiconductor interface), enabling highly sensitive and selective detection of volatile organic compounds, particularly triethylamine. The MXene@TiO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 ternary integrated heterojunction exhibits a high response value of ∼48 (R a /R g ) toward 100 ppm triethylamine at 300 °C, along with excellent selectivity, fast response/recovery, low limit of detection (697.2 ppb), remarkable humidity tolerance and long-term stability over 110 days. It is found the efficient multi-interface charge transport channel and enhanced gas adsorption/oxidation characteristics of the MXene@TiO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 ternary integrated heterojunction contribute to the excellent gas sensing performance. Moreover, the construction of sandwich-like 2D/0D/2D hierarchical open structure not only greatly promotes the diffusion of gas molecules, but also enhances the stability of pristine MXene. This work not only offers a novel strategy to enhance the performance of MXene-based gas sensing materials, but also provides significant insight into charge transport mechanisms at muti-interfaces in resistive-type gas sensors.
