Development of a NS-CDs/Fluorescein Ratiometric Fluorescent Sensor Integrated Smartphone Platform for Rapid and Specific Detection of Mn(VII) and Captopril

Chuntong Liu,Haiyan Qi,Jiayu Zhang,Jun Li,Tao Jing,Qiuying Li,Lixin Qiu,Xiaochen Zhu

The construction of a ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NS-CDs) and fluorescein was reported to detect Mn(VII) and captopril. The detection mechanism of Mn(VII) and captopril were based on inner filter effect (IFE) and redox reaction, respectively. The sensor showed good linearities in the detection range of 0.12-100 μM for Mn(VII) and 0.52-300 μM for captopril, with limits of detection (LODs) of 0.12 μM and 0.52 μM, respectively. Furthermore, a smartphone-based platform for the detection of Mn(VII) and captopril was developed, based on the dual-signal response of color and fluorescence intensity. The system displayed linear signal changes with increasing Mn(VII) and captopril concentration in the ranges of 0.32-100 μM and 0.52-300 μM, with LODs of 0.32 μM and 0.52 μM, respectively. Finally, the ratiometric sensor was validated for the determination of Mn(VII) and captopril in herb and captopril tablet samples, demonstrating its broad applicability and versatility as a portable, sensitive, and specific detector for Mn(VII) and captopril in various sample types. Overall, our ratiometric fluorescent sensor has potential as a portable, on-site detector for Mn(VII) and captopril analysis.

Carbon quantum dots derived from the extracellular polymeric substance of anaerobic ammonium oxidation granular sludge for detection of trace Mn(VII) and Cr(VI)

Fengli Liu,Huosheng Li,Dandan Liao,Yanhong Xu,Mingxia Yu,Shengwen Deng,Gaosheng Zhang,Tangfu Xiao,Jianyou Long,Hongguo Zhang,Yuting Li,Keke Li,Ping Zhang

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized via a hydrothermal method, in which extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) from anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) granular sludge was used as a carbon precursor, while citric acid and ethylenediamine were applied as auxiliary carbon source and passivation agent, respectively. The synthesized CQDs, with orderly spherical shape and mean size of 7.15 nm, emitted blue fluorescent light under UV radiation of 365 nm. The CQDs had a high fluorescence yield (40.84%), with good water solubility and excellent spectroscopic properties. In addition, the CQDs exhibited selective, sensitive and distinctive fluorescence quenching behaviors for Cr(VI) and Mn(VII) in a PBS buffer solution (NaH2PO4–Na2HPO4) of pH 7, with a detection limit of 5.8 nM for Cr(VI) and 2.3 nM for Mn(VII). Owing to the nitrogen components from the EPS of anammox granules, the CQDs were well nitrogen-doped, promoting electron-transfer and leading to reduction between the CQDs and Mn(VII)/Cr(VI). These results indicate that CQD-based chemical sensing is a simple and efficient means for the fluorescence detection of Mn(VII) and Cr(VI).

Facile, rapid synthesis of N,P-dual-doped carbon dots as a label-free multifunctional nanosensor for Mn(VII) detection, temperature sensing and cellular imaging

Fangfang Du,Gan Li,Xiaojuan Gong,Guo Zhonghui,Shaomin Shuang,Ming Xian,Chuan Dong

We rapidly synthesized N,P-dual-doped carbon dots (N,P-CDs) via the acid-base neutralization spontaneous heat using a simple blend of phthalic acid, 1,2-ethylenediamine, and concentrated phosphoric acid. The approach is automatic without external heat treatment to speedily produce dozens of N,P-CDs, which refrain high temperature, sophisticated manipulations, and long reaction times. As-fabricated N,P-CDs with excellent luminescent properties, superior biocompatibility and respectable fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of 15% have been employed for the development of a label-free multifunctional fluorescence sensing platform for the detection of Mn(VII), temperature sensing and cellular imaging. Mn(VII) is able to effectively quench the fluorescence of N,P-CDs based on inner filter effect (IFE) because the absorption bands of Mn(VII) can perfectly overlap the emission and excitation wavelengths of N,P-CDs. The system had high selectivity toward Mn(VII) and the detection limit was 48.3 nM in the broad linear span from 10 μM to 200μM. Moreover, the N,P-CDs were extended for sensing Mn(VII) in living cell due to favorable biocompatibility and negligible cytotoxicity. Furthermore, the sensors showed a linear and reversible variation of emission intensity for a temperature range from 25℃ to 80℃, with a sensitivity of −1.79% per ℃. The practical implications of N,P-CDs for Mn(VII) detection have been demonstrated in Teas leaves and Medicinal herbs samples with satisfactory results.

Speciation Analysis of Mn(II)/Mn(VII) in Tea Samples Using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry After Room Temperature Ionic Liquid-Based Dispersive Liquid–Liquid Microextraction

Wen Shengping,Zhu Xiashi

A simple and rapid method based on dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction with room temperature ionic liquid 1,3-dibutylimidazolium hexafluorophosophate ([BBIM][PF 6 ]) coupled to flame atomic absorption spectrometry was developed for the speciation of Mn(II)/Mn(VII) in tea samples. The main factors affecting dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction were investigated in detail. Mn(II) and total manganese [Mn(II)+Mn(VII)] were quantitatively extracted after adjusting aqueous sample solution to pH 10.0 and 7.0, respectively. Mn(VII) was calculated by subtraction of Mn(II) from total manganese. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection (3 σ ) for Mn(II) and Mn(VII) were 0.26 and 1.86 ng/mL, and their relative standard deviations were 2.6 and 4.8 % ( n  = 7, c  = 25.00 ng/mL). The proposed method was validated by the determination of Mn(II) and Mn(VII) in the certified reference material [GBW(E)08513] of tea sample and different local tea samples with satisfactory results.
