Synthesis of Mn-ZIF-67 for efficient degradation of tetracycline

Zhu Wenzhong,Zhu Xueting,Shen Weijian,An Nan,Wu Lina

Antibiotics are extensively employed in the treatment of human and animal ailments. However, their excessive use and poor biodegradability have led to a notable accumulation of antibiotics in the environment, presenting potential health hazards to humans. In this study, tetracycline (TC) was selected as a representative antibiotic, and a recyclable material, Mn-ZIF-67, was synthesized to degrade TC through adsorption and peroxidase-like activity. Mn-ZIF-67 significantly enhances the peroxidase-like activity of ZIF-67. The removal efficiency of TC was boosted by 300% compared to ZIF-67 within a 10-min timeframe. With its high catalytic activity and stability, Mn-ZIF-67 exhibits significant promise for the swift degradation and elimination of antibiotics from the environment.

Hollow Mn-doped CeO2@Co3O4 catalyst for NO reduction by CO

Yuxi Meng,Shaomian Liu,Yixi Wang,Wenqing Xu,Jiajian Gao,Sansan Yu,Fabing Su,Tingyu Zhu

Selective catalytic reduction of NO using CO (CO-SCR) is a promising technology for the purification of NO in the flue gas. However, the presence of O 2 significantly inhibits the activity of the CO-SCR catalyst. Herein, we synthesize a hollow Mn-doped CeO 2 @Co 3 O 4 catalyst (Mn-CeO 2 @Co 3 O 4 ), which achieved 82% NO conversion, 100% CO conversion, and 78% N 2 selectivity under 5 vol% O 2 at 200 °C, superior to those of CeO 2 @Co 3 O 4 and Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 catalysts. The characterization results indicate that the strong electronic interaction at the heterointerfaces between Co 3 O 4 and CeO 2 plays a crucial role in promoting selective adsorption of NO. Furthermore, the Mn doping into the Co 3 O 4 lattice of the catalyst facilitates the conversion of N 2 O intermediates, thereby enhancing the overall activity. This research provides a new strategy for the design and synthesis of CO-SCR catalysts.

Insights into Mn-doped biochar induce peroxymonosulfate activation for phenol degradation: The overlooked significance of C-O-Mn

Hong Meng,Junhui Zhou,Chunyang Nie,Wenhao Li,Didi Li,Yongqing Zhang,Zhimin Ao

Understanding the metal bonding types in biochar and their effects on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is essential for selecting appropriate biomass and developing efficient catalysts. This study reports a dual-pathway non-radical oxidation system activated by Mn-doped biochar (P-Mn-TPs-900). In the P-Mn-TPs-900/PMS system, phenol degradation reached 100 % within 60 min across a broad pH range (5 −10). Additionally, this oxidation system exhibited excellent stability (5 cycles), maintaining at least 74 % degradation efficiency in the presence of background ions or humic acid. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations identified: i) C-O-Mn sites as the primary active sites for PMS activation, facilitating the formation of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) which was the key reactive oxygen species for phenol degradation; ii) phenol adsorbed on the P-Mn-TPs-900 surface was degraded via an electron transfer process between sulfate groups and phenol. DFT calculations showed strong hybridization between the Mn 3d-orbital, the O 2p-orbital, and the corresponding 2p-orbitals of carbon, which enhanced biochar's catalytic capability. This study provides insights into the role of the C-O-Mn site in PMS activation and offers guidance for selecting suitable biomass for developing practical Fenton-like systems in wastewater treatment.

Tunable emission of Cu (Mn)-doped ZnInS quantum dots via dopant interaction

Jiatao Zhu,Shiliang Mei,Wu Yang,Guilin Zhang,Qiuhang Chen,Wanlu Zhang,Ruiqian Guo

In this work, transition metal ion- doped zinc-based quantum dots (QDs) are synthesized via a greener controllable method to avoid the toxicity of the traditional cadmium-based QDs and broaden the tunable emission. Herein, the tunable emission of Cu-doped ZnInS/ZnS core-shell QDs (Cu:ZnInS/ZnS) can cover from 500 to 620   nm by varying the Cu dopant concentration from 1 to 20% and the maximum quantum yield can reach 49.8%. Based on the single-doped QDs, Cu,Mn co-doped ZnInS/ZnS core-shell QDs (Cu,Mn:ZnInS/ZnS) with a photoluminance (PL) quantum yield of 30.4% are obtained. All the as-synthesized QDs have the zinc blende structure and the average size is about 3.55   nm. Besides, the interaction mechanism between the Cu and Mn dopant luminescence centers is proposed in this work, which is rarely investigated in the previous report. Diffusion priority and energy transfer between these two dopants are supposed to play an important role in the co-doped QDs and Cu ions could affect the splitting of Mn d states. Color coordinates of these doped QDs show the line-tunability from (0.200, 0.397) to (0.408, 0.508) on the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) chromatic diagram, showing a promising potential in high-quality white light output by integration of these QDs with blue chips.

Mechanochemically synthesized Fe-Mn binary oxides for efficient As(III) removal: Insight into the origin of synergy action from mutual Fe and Mn doping

Huimin Hu,Qiwu Zhang,Chao Wang,Min Chen,Mengfei Chen

Iron manganese oxide resources are widely derived from the geological structure , and their combinations play an important role in the migration and transformation of arsenic. Iron oxide and manganese oxide exist generally in a mixed state in Fe-Mn oxides synthesized via the well studied co-precipitation methods using potassium permanganate and manganese/iron sulfates. Herein, a newly designed Fe-Mn-O compositing oxide with Fe-MnO 2 , Mn-Fe 2 O 3 , (Fe 0.67 Mn 0.33 )OOH solid solution and FeOOH as the main components, simply through solvent-free mechanical ball milling pyrolusite (MnO 2 ) and ferrihydrite (FeOOH) together has been reported. Atomic-scale integrations by doping Fe and Mn with each other were detected and an adsorption-oxidation bifunctionality was achieved, where Fe-doped MnO 2 served as oxidizer for As(III) and amorphous/ground FeOOH acted as adsorbent first for As(III) and then As(V) from the oxidization. The maximal adsorption for As(III) could reach 44.99 mg/g and over 82.5% of As(III) was converted to As(V). More importantly, high removal ability of arsenic worked in a wide pH range of 2–10.5%, and 87.2% of its initial adsorption-oxidation capacity could be kept even after 5-cycles reuse for treating 20 mg/L As(III) with a dosage at 1 g/L. Together with the enhanced adsorption capacity by the milled FeOOH, surface electron transfer efficiency of the developed Fe-MnO 2 surrounded with Mn-Fe 2 O 3 has been studied for the first time to understand the oxidization effect to As(V). Besides the environment-friendliness of ball milling method, the prepared sample is quite stable without noticeable metal release into solution. Mechanism studies of arsenic removal by the as-prepared Fe-Mn-O oxide provide a new direction for improving the oxidation efficiency of MnO 2 to As(III) based on the widely available cheap Mn and Fe oxides, contributing to the development of advanced oxidization process in the treatment of waste water.

Engineered Mn/Co oxides nanocomposites by cobalt doping of Mn-BTC - New oxidase mimetic for colorimetric sensing of acid phosphatase

Xiaodan Zhang,Ai Yuan,Xuanxiang Mao,Qiumeng Chen,Yuming Huang

We report that the Co/Mn oxides nanocomposite, obtained by directly pyrolying cobalt doped Mn-BTC precursor, is a new oxidase mimetic for colorimetric sensing of acid phosphatase (ACP). By tuning the molar ratios of cobalt ions to Mn-BTC (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) precursor, four bimetal Co/Mn-BTCs and their derivatives were obtained. These Co/Mn oxides showed 1.4-fold to 2.6-fold higher oxidase-like activity than that of Mn 2 O 3 derived from Mn-BTC, indicating that Co-doping is an effective way for improving and tuning oxidase-like activity of manganese oxides. The rambutan-like Co/Mn oxides with Co/Mn molar ratio of 0.33 (denoted CMO-0.33) in the MOFs precursors exhibited the highest oxidase-like activity. The estimated Michaelis constant for 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) was 2.26-fold lower than that of Mn 2 O 3 , indicating its stronger affinity to TMB. Based on the inhibitory effect of ascorbic acid (AA) on the TMB-CMO-0.33 system, a new colorimetric strategy was paved for screening ACP activity when coupled with L-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate trisodium salt (AAP) because ACP could catalyze hydrolysis of AAP to generate AA. The proposed colorimetric biosensor allows detection of ACP in the range 0.02–1.0 U/L with a limit of detection of 8.2 mU/L. Its potential utilization in ACP assay in human serum samples is successfully demonstrated.

Catalytic oxidation of Mn(II) in the co-presence of Fe(II) by free chlorine: significance of in situ formed Mn(II)-doped Fe(III) oxides

Xuecong Qian,Shilong Wang,Haijun Cheng,Luwei Li,Yun Liu,Jinhao Duan,Da Wang,Jun Ma

Fe(II) and Mn(II) are abundant in groundwater and require operationally simple and efficient method to remove in drinking water treatment. The rapid oxidation of Mn(II) is essential in water treatment. This study investigates the efficiency of Mn(II) oxidation by free chlorine in the presence of Fe(II). The results demonstrate that the presence of Fe(II) significantly accelerates the oxidation rate of Mn(II) by free chlorine under neutral and alkaline conditions. The rapid oxidation of Fe(II) by free chlorine and the presence of Mn(II) promote the formation of in situ Mn(II)-doped ferrihydrite. Kinetic modeling and characterization of Fe(III) oxides confirm that the heterogeneous catalytic effect of the Mn(II)-doped ferrihydrite, rather than manganese oxides or their coupled catalytic effect, is responsible for the enhanced oxidation rates. The doped Mn(II) substitutes the tetrahedral Fe(III) ions in the ferrihydrite, introducing additional negative charges at the doped sites. The increased charge enhances Mn(II) adsorption and lowers its redox potential, thereby accelerating Mn(II) oxidation rate through direct electron transfer with adjacent free chlorine. Additionally, the lepidocrocite formed by the reaction between Fe(II) and dissolved oxygen significantly impedes the catalytic performance. These findings provide new insights into the catalytic co-oxidation mechanism of Fe(II) and Mn(II), and help the optimization of water treatment engineering practices.

Enhanced magnetoelectric response of Mn-doped BiFeO3-based multiferroic ceramics

Zhang Xiaoyan,Yang Xu,Wang Zhaopeng,Pan Qi,Chu Baojin,Zuo Ruzhong

Our previous work proposed that except for ferromagnetic and piezoelectric properties, mechanical quality factor is also an important parameter for high magnetoelectric response of BiFeO 3 -based multiferroic ceramics. In this work, in order to improve the mechanical quality factor of BiFeO 3 -based ceramics and obtain higher magnetoelectric response, we use Mn as a dopant and prepare 0.75BiFe 1− x Mn x O 3 -0.25BaTiO 3 ( x  = 0, 0.0025, 0.005, 0.0075, 0.01) ceramics. The dielectric, piezoelectric, magnetic, and magnetoelectric properties of the ceramics with different Mn doping levels and different sintering temperatures are studied comprehensively. We find that the piezoelectric response, mechanical quality factor, ferromagnetic property, and magnetoelectric response can be improved by optimization of the composition and sintering temperature of the ceramics. A large magnetoelectric coefficient α E \(\sim\) 2 V/(cm Oe) is achieved at resonant frequency when doping content of Mn is 0.75 mol% and sintering temperature is 1030 \(\mathrm{^\circ{\rm C} }\) . Such high value of α E is attributed to the combined effect of improved mechanical quality factor, high piezoelectric coefficient, and enhanced ferromagnetism. It is among the largest α E values obtained in single-phase BiFeO 3 -based ceramics. Moreover, our work further verifies the mechanical quality factor is an important parameter to achieve a high magnetoelectric response in BiFeO 3 -based ceramics.

Preparation and Performance of Carbon-Based Ce-Mn Catalysts for Efficient Degradation of Acetone at Low Temperatures

Tong Li,Zhibo Wang,Yue Shi,Xiaolong Yao

Based on the porous carbon material from citric acid residue, catalysts of different Ce-Mn ratios were prepared with incipient-wetness impregnation (IWI) to delve into their acetone-degrading performance and relevant mechanisms. When the Ce-Mn molar ratio is 0.8, the prepared catalyst Ce0.8-Mn/AC shows abundant and uniformly dispersed Mn and Ce particles on the surface. The content of Mn and Ce on the Ce0.8-Mn/AC surface reaches 5.64% and 0.75%, respectively. At the acetone concentration of 238 mg/m3(100 ppm), the laws of acetone degradation in different catalysts at different catalyzing temperatures and with various oxygen concentrations were studied, and we found that the rate of acetone degradation by Ce0.8-Mn/AC can exceed 90% at 250 °C. Cerium oxide and manganese oxide are synergistic in the catalytic degradation of acetone. Adding cerium to manganese-based catalysts can increase the oxygen migration rate in the catalysts and thus raise the reduction rate of lattice oxygen in manganese oxide. The results offer new ideas and approaches for the efficient and comprehensive utilization of bio-fermentation by-products, and for the development of cheap and high degradation performance catalysts for acetone.Keywords:acetone;Ce0.8-Mn/AC;efficient degradation;low temperatures

Mn⁴⁺-doping-induced structural transformation and luminescence enhancement in bulk (NH₄)₂SiF₆: Mn⁴⁺ crystal grown via cooling crystallization

Zhaowu Wang,Zhiyu Min,Liping Tian,Wenrui Zhang,Hao Li,Jinlong Chen,Derong Zhu

Mn⁴⁺-activated fluoride bulk crystals have recently emerged as promising phosphor materials due to their superior water resistance, thermal stability, and quantum efficiency compared to conventional powder forms. Herein, we report the successful growth of millimeter-sized (NH₄)₂SiF₆:Mn⁴⁺ crystals with intense red emission under 365 nm UV excitation via a facile cooling crystallization approach. The as-grown crystals exhibit a distinctive yellow body color and attain dimensions of up to ∼3 mm. Intriguingly, Mn⁴⁺-doping triggers a structural phase transition in the host matrix from cubic symmetry (space group, Fm- 3 m ) to hexagonal symmetry (space group, P 6 3 mc ), accompanied by progressive lattice distortions. This structural evolution manifests spectroscopically through the emergence of a zero-phonon line (ZPL) in photoluminescence spectra, with the ZPL-to- v ₆ intensity ratio escalating from 0 % to 34 % as Mn⁴⁺ concentration increases. Concomitantly, all seven characteristic emission peaks display systematic blueshifts. Furthermore, the microscopic morphology, thermal quenching behavior, and decay property of the crystal are significantly influenced by the doping-induced structural modifications. This study establishes a structural engineering strategy for optimizing luminescent performance in (NH₄)₂SiF₆:Mn⁴⁺ crystal phosphors.

Electronic configuration regulation of single-atomic Mn sites mediated by Mo/Mn clusters for an efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Chengyu Zhang,Xiangyang Wang,Renyuan Zhao,Fabrice Ndayisenga,Zhisheng Yu

Tuning the electron distribution of metal single-atom active sites via bimetallic clusters is an effective way to enhance their hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, but remains a great challenge. A biochar-based electrocatalyst (BCMoMn800-2) with both MnN4 active sites and Mo2C/Mn7C3 clusters was synthesized using in situ enriched Mo/Mn biomass as a precursor to trigger the HER. Various characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results indicated that the presence of Mo2C/Mn7C3 clusters in BCMoMn800-2 effectively induced the redistribution of charges at MnN4 sites, reducing the energy of H* activation during the HER. In 0.5 M H2SO4, the overpotential was 27.4 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and the Tafel slope was 31 mV dec−1, and its electrocatalytic performance was close to that of Pt/C. The electrocatalyst also exhibited excellent electrocatalytic stability and durability. This work might provide a new strategy for solid waste recycling and constructing efficient HER electrocatalysts.

Degradation of bisphenol A by electro-enhanced heterogeneous activation of peroxydisulfate using Mn-Zn ferrite from spent alkaline Zn-Mn batteries

Bin Deng,Yating Li,Weihua Tan,Zhaoxi Wang,Ziwei Yu,Shuya Xing,Heng Lin,Hui Zhang

Mn-Zn ferrite (Mn 0.6 Zn 0.4 Fe 2 O 4 ) was prepared by a gel method using spent alkaline Zn-Mn batteries as raw materials and employed as catalyst to degrade bisphenol A (BPA) by electro-enhanced heterogeneous activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS). The effects of initial pH, current density, PDS concentration, and Mn-Zn ferrite dosage on BPA removal were investigated. The formation of reactive radicals was verified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The results of radical quenching experiments indicate that surface-bound sulfate and hydroxyl radicals played an important role in BPA removal. The stability of Mn 0.6 Zn 0.4 Fe 2 O 4 catalyst was investigated by cycling experiments, which indicates Mn 0.6 Zn 0.4 Fe 2 O 4 is stable and can be reused. This work also provides an alternative way for the reutilization of spent alkaline Zn-Mn batteries.
