A new 3-dimensional (3D) Mn-based metal organic framework (Mn-MOF) was created through hydrothermal method. This Mn-MOF has the molecular formula of C 10 H 10 Mn 3 N 4 O 12 and possesses orthorhombic symmetry in the Pbcn space group. As the electrode material for supercapacitors, a small amount of Cu powder is added to modify the electrode material (Mn-MOF-Cu), which has higher specific capacitance, better cycle stability and longer cycle life than the Mn-MOF. The specific capacitance of the optimized electrode material can reach 1606 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , which is significantly higher than the original Mn-MOF electrode material (1106 F g −1 ). The key aspect which improves the electrochemical behavior of Mn-MOF-Cu is the introduction of Cu powder as a conductive additive, so that the advantages of the unique 3D structure of the Mn-MOF in terms of electron transport can be better displayed.

MOFs (metal–organic frameworks) have large specific surface area, abundant active sites, and tunable pore structures, making them highly attractive anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. However, their inadequate electrical conductivity and rate performance greatly hinder the further applications of MOFs in field of energy storage. In this study, we present a robust Mn-MOF/HA (humic acid) composite anode material with multilayer nano-sheet structures, synthesized via in-situ compositing HA with Mn-MOF in general hydrothermal reaction. The Mn-MOF derived from hydrothermal reaction shows poor electrochemical stability and low electrical conductivity. The incorporation of HA notably elevates electrochemical stability of materials, boosts both electrical and lithium-ion conductivity, and also modulates the microstructure to form ultrathin multilayer nanosheets by rationally adjusting the feed ratio of HA. The resulting HA 20 -Mn-MOF (with a HA feed ratio of 20 %) demonstrates significant improvements in cycling stability and rate performance, with a reversible specific capacity of 1318.7mAh/g at 0.1 A/g after 100 cycles and a substantial capacity of 657.0mAh/g even after 1000 cycles at 1 A/g. An extraordinary V-shaped capacity reversal is observed for HA 20 -Mn-MOF during cycling. Ex-situ EPR (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance) investigation reveals this capacity growth is associated with the reoxidation of active manganese during cycling, in which a notable correlation between the specific capacity and the Mn 2+ signal intensity in EPR spectra is found. These results suggest in-situ compositing HA with MOFs can be a cost-effective strategy in regulating MOFs morphology and in achieving an optimized electrochemical performance for MOFs-based electrode materials in energy storage field.

In nature, active Mn 3+ –ligand complexes produced by laccase catalyzed oxidation can act as the low-molecular mass, diffusible redox mediators to oxidize the phenolic substrates overcoming the limitations of natural enzymes. Learning from the metal–ligand coordination of natural functional units, high-valence Mn metal–organic framework (Mn MOF) is constructed to simulate the catalysis in natural mediator system. Benefiting from the characteristics of nanoscale size, rich metal coordination unsaturated sites, and mixed valence state dominated by Mn(III), Nano Mn(III)-TP exhibits superior laccase-mimicking activity, whose V max (maximal reaction rate) is much higher than that of natural laccase. Referring to natural systems, relevant free radical experiments prove that the material induces the production of active oxygen species with the assistance of carboxylic acid, and active oxygen species further oxidize phenolic substrates. Based on its robust performances, the primary oxidative degradation of an emerging pollutant triclosan (TCS) is creatively applied, an important antiasthmatic medicine terbutaline sulfate (TBT) detection, and the synthesis of non-toxic and black near-natural dyes for dyeing. By simulating the essential mediators of natural enzymatic catalysis, an Mn MOF-based material that demonstrates multiple novel applications is successfully developed, which introduces a new reliable strategy for achieving versatile nature-mimicking catalysis.

In this study, we designed and synthesized Mn III with tunable spin state in g-C 3 N 4 through one-step calcination of Mn-MOF. The Mn atoms were induced into the six-fold cavity of the g-C 3 N 4 lattice and formed Mn-N 6 coordination. Mn-MOF served as the source of Mn. The collapse of Mn-MOF effectively promoted the stripping of stacked layers in g-C 3 N 4 and increased the atomic loading. The Mn-N coordination induced impurity energy levels which effectively regulated Mnx-CN's bandgap structure and accelerated the migration and separation of carriers. The O 2 − was activated to 1 O 2 by the energy released from the high-spin Mn III transferred ground state. The H 2 production of Mn 10 -CN (13479.19 µmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) is ∼32.2 times that of CN under visible light irradiation and with a remarkable apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 12.23% at 420 nm. The rates of TC degradation and Cr (VI) reduction achieved 0.059 and 0.18 min −1 , respectively. In addition, the practical application conditions and catalytic mechanism of Mnx-CN were explored. This work demonstrates the connection of the spin state of metal with the photocatalytic activity, providing an efficient photocatalytic system that can be used for solar-chemical energy conversion and pollution remediation, and presenting a new approach for modifying the g-C 3 N 4 -based catalysts.

Accurate and rapid detection of foodborne pathogens is a key to prevent foodborne disease outbreaks. In this study, a novel impedance immunosensor based on a metal-organic framework (Mn-MOF-74) is used to rapidly and sensitively detect Listeria monocytogenes ( L. m ) in milk. Divalent manganese ions are released by the MOF reduction reaction mediated by hydrogen peroxide. Consequently, the impedance signal was detected by high conductive single-crystalline gold interdigitated microelectrode to achieve quantification of L. m . First, the capture antibodies (Ab 1 ) are modified on the surface of the magnetic beads to generate immunomagnetic beads (MBs@Ab 1 ), which are used specifically to separate L. m cells in the matrices. Later, the immunosensor (Mn-MOF-74@Ab 2 ) is added to the matrices to form a sandwich complex (MBs@Ab 1 - L. m -Mn-MOF-74@Ab 2 ). Henceforward, Mn 2+ is released from the sandwich composite via the action triggered by H 2 O 2 . The release of Mn 2+ significantly changes the impedance of interdigitated microelectrodes, leading to ultrasensitive detection of L. m . The recoveries for L. m cells at the concentration between 1.0 × 10 0 and 1.0 × 10 4 CFU/mL are 90.2%–101.7% in water and 88.5%–96.2% in milk. The detection limit of this approach for L. m cells in water and milk are 7.1 and 9.2 CFU/mL, respectively. This approach can achieve rapid quantification of L. m cells within 60 min, and can also be employed to monitor other foodborne pathogens.

The catalytic oxidation of glucose to formic acid (FA) represents a crucial route for biomass valorization. Metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon composites offer exceptional tunability for catalyst design. Herein, a series of carbon-regulated Mn x O y /C catalysts from Mn-MOF-74 precursors via controlled calcination atmospheres and temperatures, achieving satisfactory performance in glucose-to-FA conversion. Comprehensive characterization reveals that the carbon matrix plays a synergistic effect: dispersing Mn x O y nanoparticles to enhance substrate accessibility, and preventing Mn leaching to improve stability. The FA yield is determined by fine-tuning key parameters: the (Mn 2+ +Mn 3+ )/Mn valence ratio and Mn x O y particle size. Combined DFT and experimental analyses demonstrate that Mn valence states determine reaction kinetics: Mn 3 O 4 exhibits elevated glucose adsorption energy and reduced formic acid (FA) desorption energy, while MnO displays an opposing trend, rationalizing the activity differences. This work establishes a carbon-mediated synergy strategy for designing efficient Mn-based catalysts in biomass oxidation upgrading.

Flumioxazin, a nitrophenyl herbicide widely used in agriculture, poses potential health risks due to its residue in agricultural products. This study elucidates the fabrication of a novel electrochemical sensor, MnO@C , specifically designed for the efficient detection of flumioxazin. The sensor MnO@C was created by annealing Mn-BTC , synthesized via a straightforward solvothermal method. The electrochemical behavior of MnO@C for detecting flumioxazin was assessed through DPV. The findings revealed that MnO@C demonstrated a wide detection range, achieving an exceptionally low LOD at 597 fmol/L for flumioxazin. Moreover, MnO@C exhibited exceptional duplicability, reliability, and anti-interference ability. The sensor MnO@C was also effectively utilized for the quantitative detection of flumioxazin in diverse samples. The results highlight the substantially practical utility of MnO@C in food and environment detection, which provides broad-spectrum environmental resistance and fast, efficient detection for flumioxazin residue. Additionally, a thorough analysis of the mechanism of MnO@C for monitoring flumioxazin was undertaken.

Developing high-sensitivity hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) sensors is crucial. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered one of the ideal materials for developing H 2 O 2 sensors for their adjustable pore size and diverse topological structures. In this work, solvothermal synthesis is utilized CQD@Mn-MOF using carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and two-dimensional Mn-MOF ([Mn(Tib)(H 2 O) 3 ]·(TPA)·3H 2 O, Tib = 1,3,5-triamidazolylbenzene, TPA = terephthalic acid) as precursors. Interestingly, CQD@Mn-MOF as an electrochemical sensor can effectively detect H 2 O 2 with a lower detection limit of 14.7 μM, and higher sensitivity (approximately 5 times that of pure Mn-MOF). CQD@Mn-MOF sensor is capable of detecting H 2 O 2 with high selectivity in the presence of other interfering agents such as proline, ascorbic acid, glucose, and various metal salts. In addition, CQD@Mn-MOF electrochemical sensor has been used to effectively determine the H 2 O 2 content in actual beverages such as fruit juice and beer. The sensing mechanism has been reasonably analyzed that the MnO 2 produced by Mn 2+ + H 2 O 2 = MnO 2 + 2H + reaction acts as a specific catalyst for H 2 O 2 decomposition reaction (MnO 2 + H 2 O 2 + 2H + = Mn 2+ + O 2 + 2H 2 O). This sensing mechanism further ensures the high selectivity of the sensor for H 2 O 2 . Significantly, the introduction of CQD not only improves the conductivity of Mn-MOF, but also can provide more active sites in the catalytic reaction, improve the contact area and reaction rate of the reaction, and improve the catalytic performance of Mn-MOF, further improve the sensitivity.

The combination of pseudocapacitive electrodes with ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes demonstrates a significant synergistic effect in expanding the potential window of supercapacitors, thereby enhancing the energy density of the device. Mn 3 (HHTP) 2 , a metal-organic framework (MOF) with high-density redox-active sites and hierarchical porosity, serves as the electrode material paired with [EMIM][BF 4 ] and [EMIM][TFSI] IL electrolytes. The ion size in [EMIM][TFSI] can be precisely aligned with the electrode pore size, thereby reducing interfacial resistance and enhancing ion accessibility. Optimizing the [EMIM][TFSI]/acetonitrile mass ratio to 4:6 achieves superior electrolyte properties, including an ionic conductivity of 50.4 mS cm −1 and viscosity of 5.24 mPa·s. This design extends operating potential from 8 V to 13 V, increasing energy density to 108.0 Wh kg −1 , representing a 68.8 % improvement over baseline systems. The device retains 94.34 % capacitance after 2000 cycles at 8 V, with specific capacitances of 7.2 F g −1 at 8 V and 4.6 F g −1 at 13 V. These findings establish a new paradigm for interface engineering in high-voltage supercapacitors.

Given the promising prospect of nanozymes in colorimetric test strips, it is essential to eliminate the interferences of their multi-activities and various colors on the test strip. Here, white Mn-based metal-organic frameworks (Mn-MOFs) with ultrathin 2D morphology (3 nm thick) were successfully synthesized by a simple ultrasonic approach. The origin of the white optical property in Mn-MOFs was systematically investigated, revealing that it stems from specific metal-ligand coordination polymerization rather than morphological features or defect states. Mn-MOF nanozymes possessed exclusive peroxidase-mimicking activity rather than oxidase-like activity, effectively resisting O 2 interference during colorimetric assay. Moreover, Mn-MOF nanozymes displayed unique substrate selectivity without additional modification. Unlike other colored nanozymes, the whiteness of Mn-MOF nanozymes enhanced the paper’s whiteness, boosting contrast for colorimetric detection on test strip. This study pioneers a systematic investigation into the origin of whiteness in MOF nanozymes. The coordination-defined properties enable interference-free optical design and O 2 -resistant on-site detection.

Conventional manganese(II) (Mn(II))-activated sulfite (S(IV)) systems remain constrained by slow reaction kinetics and inefficient Mn redox cycling, limiting their application in water treatment. Although non-radical pathways have been reported in certain metal/S(IV) systems, the role of high-valent Mn species remains unresolved. To address this knowledge gap, this study engineered a Mn-based metal-organic framework (Mn-MOF, denoted MM) featuring unsaturated Mn(II)−OH sites to achieve efficient S(IV) activation and redirect the oxidation process toward a non-radical route. Arsenite (As(III)) was employed as a model contaminant to systematically evaluate the MM/S(IV) system through kinetic analysis, reactive species identification, and surface characterization. The MM/S(IV) system enabled rapid As(III) oxidation (99.3% within 5 min, 0.64 min −1 ) at pH 7.4. The catalyst exhibited excellent stability during sequential operation (0.04% Mn leaching) and could be nearly fully regenerated. Mechanistic investigation revealed an interfacial pathway initiated by an O 2 -assisted, ligand-bridged electron transfer that yielded SO 3 •− /SO 5 •− . SO 5 •− subsequently oxidized Mn(II) to Mn(III), which then underwent two-electron oxidation by HSO 5 − to form Mn(V) as the dominant oxidant. This work demonstrates how MOF coordination engineering can redirect S(IV) activation toward a non-radical Mn(V)-mediated route, advancing the design of metal-centered oxidation systems for water remediation.

Background Iodide (I − ) serves as a key indicator for monitoring 131 I contamination in marine environments. However, rapid on-site detection remains challenging due to the short half-life of radionuclides and the complex nature of seawater. Traditional nanocatalysts exhibit limited catalytic activity under near-neutral conditions and poor selectivity in high-salinity environments. There is therefore an urgent need to develop a robust, instrument-free analytical platform that can meet on-site environmental monitoring requirements by combining high sensitivity with operational simplicity. Results In this study, Mn-modified MOF-808 (Mn/MOF-808) nanozymes were synthesised using a sustainable aqueous post-synthetic approach. The incorporation of Mn centers significantly altered the electronic structure of the MOF nodes, resulting in exceptional peroxidase-like activity across a wide pH range (3.5-8.0). We found that I − acts as a potent synergistic amplifier, greatly accelerating the catalytic oxidation of chromogenic substrates. The sensing system achieved an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.63 nM for I − . To enable point-of-care testing (POCT), we developed a smartphone-integrated platform using a customised WeChat mini-program for digital image colorimetry. The test results showed no significant deviation from those obtained using the standard ICP-MS method. Significance This work presents a cost-effective ($0.104/test), rapid, and user-friendly approach for I − monitoring. The Mn/MOF-808 platform demonstrates superior anti-interference capability in various environmental water samples and simulated seawater (recoveries: 96.5%-103.2%). By bridging advanced nanozyme engineering with mobile digitization, this research offers a practical and scalable solution for real-time environmental monitoring and emergency diagnostics of radioactive contaminants, aligning with the principles of green analytical chemistry.
