The twinned structure builds an electric field within the photocatalyst through a unique atomic arrangement, enhancing the separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated charges. Herein, twinned Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (T-MCS) with a differential band structure, integrating wurtzite (WZ-MCS) and zinc blende (ZB-MCS) phases, was synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis. It was then loaded onto cow manure biochar (CM) for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The charge transfer pathways of T-MCS and the composite catalyst were systematically investigated using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, photoelectrochemical measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. T-MCS leverages structural distinctiveness to achieve optimal bulk charge separation, driving exceptional photocatalytic hydrogen production. After reacting under a 300 W Xe-lamp (λ > 420 nm) for 3 h, T-MCS produced 35.7 mmol g -1 of hydrogen, surpassing ZB-MCS and WZ-MCS by 1.6-fold and 6.7-fold, respectively. In addition, the introduction of CM improves the light absorption efficiency of the composite catalyst, provides more active sites, reduces charge transfer resistance and hydrogen evolution overpotential, and significantly enhances the photoelectrochemical performance of the composite catalyst. Ultimately, T-MCS/CM8 achieved excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of 23.2 mmol g -1 h -1 . This study indicates that the combination of twin crystal homojunctions and biochar with excellent electrochemical properties can promote the transfer and separation of bulk and interfacial charges, and improve the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. This work provides a new strategy for achieving resource recycling and H 2 production.

Emerging contaminants in water sources present serious environmental and health risks, creating an urgent need for efficient and reliable treatment strategies. Photocatalytic advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) provide rapid reaction rates and strong oxidation capabilities, however, comprehensive evaluations of wastewater treatment, including degradation pathways, toxicity assessments and mechanistic insights, remain underexplored in the literature. This study presents novel S-scheme Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/In 2 S 3 (MCS/IS) photocatalysts for efficient degradation of antibiotic pollutants, with a particular focus on tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The optimized MCS/IS photocatalyst demonstrates exceptional degradation efficiency and robust resistance to inorganic anions. Additionally, a continuous-flow wastewater treatment system, using an MCS/IS membrane, demonstrates outstanding stability in TCH photodegradation. Utilizing response surface methodology and Fukui function analysis, the effects of various parameters on photocatalytic degradation rates, along with the associated pathways and intermediate products, have been thoroughly investigated. Toxicity assessments confirm the environmental safety of the treated effluents. Mechanistic studies show that the S-scheme heterojunction in the MCS/IS photocatalyst improves electron-hole separation, thereby enhancing photocatalytic performance. It is expected that this study will serve as a model for advancing the removal of emerging contaminants, further enhancing photocatalytic AOPs as sustainable water purification technologies.

Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (MCS) is widely used in photocatalytic hydrogen production via water splitting. However, its inherent drawbacks, including low separation efficiency of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, poor stability, and severe photocorrosion, limit hydrogen production efficiency. In this study, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized using alkaline lignin as the carbon source and were loaded onto the surface of MCS via ultrasonic-assisted treatment to construct CQDs/MCS composite photocatalyst. Characterization results revealed that the introduction of CQDs did not alter the crystal structure of MCS but effectively broadened its light absorption range, leading to a red shift of the absorption edge and a narrowed band gap, as well as reduced charge transfer resistance and hydrogen evolution overpotential. The CQDs/MCS composite photocatalyst with the addition of 15 mL CQDs solution exhibited the optimal photocatalytic performance, with a hydrogen evolution rate of 13.11 mmol g −1 h −1 , which was 1.33 times higher than that of pure MCS. Moreover, the composite showed excellent recyclability. The enhanced hydrogen evolution performance of CQDs/MCS can be attributed to the fact that CQDs can capture photogenerated electrons and accelerate the separation of electron–hole pairs. In conjunction with the hole consumption by sacrificial agents, the CQDs/MCS composite achieved significantly enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance.

The rapid recombination of photoinduced charge carriers in semiconductors fundamentally limits their application in photocatalysis. Herein, we report that a superlattice interface and S-scheme heterojunction based on Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S nanorods can significantly promote ultrafast charge separation and transfer. Specifically, the axially distributed zinc blende/wurtzite superlattice interfaces in Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S nanorods can redistribute photoinduced charge carriers more effectively when boosted by homogeneous internal electric fields and promotes bulk separation. Accordingly, S-scheme heterojunctions between the Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S nanorods and MnWO 4 nanoparticles can further accelerate the surface separation of charge carriers via a heterogeneous internal electric field. Subsequent capture of the photoelectrons by adsorbed H 2 O is as fast as several picoseconds which results in a photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of 54.4 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 without any cocatalyst under simulated solar irradiation. The yields are increased by a factor of ~5 times relative to control samples and an apparent quantum efficiency of 63.1% at 420 nm is measured. This work provides a protocol for designing synergistic interface structure for efficient photocatalysis.

Rational design of highly efficient photocatalysts based on molybdenum cocatalysts is prospective to achieve hydrogen evolution under visible light. Herein, Mn0.5Cd0.5S nanoparticles decorated with O-doped MoS2 nanosheets (denoted as O-MoS2/Mn0.5Cd0.5S) were successfully synthesized. The incorporation of O atoms, which could trigger defects and enlarge the interlayer distance of MoS2, was achieved by a simple hydrothermal method. The performances of O-MoS2/Mn0.5Cd0.5S composites for catalyzing hydrogen evolution are rapidly enhanced with increasing contents of O-MoS2. The resultant 12 wt% O-MoS2/Mn0.5Cd0.5S composite exhibits superior stability and a satisfactory hydrogen production rate up to 84.32 mmol g−1 h−1 and the apparent quantum efficiency at 420 nm is 46.92%, which is 3.18 times higher than that of Mn0.5Cd0.5S nanoparticles. To the best of our understanding, such an exceptional activity of 12 wt% O-MoS2/Mn0.5Cd0.5S prepared in this work for hydrogen evolution is one of the highest among all reported Mn–Cd–S-based catalysts. The markedly strengthened activity is attributed to the improved light absorption and effective separation of photoinduced carriers between O-MoS2 nanosheets and Mn0.5Cd0.5S nanoparticles. This work indicates that O-MoS2 is a potential cocatalyst for the rational construction of efficient photocatalysts.

The worldwide environmental pollution and energy crisis have become two main challenges currently. To this end, we aim to build a win–win strategy of clean hydrogen energy recovery with simultaneous environmental detoxification by treating sulfide-containing wastewater in a non-hazardous manner. In this study, we designed a heterostructure photocatalyst with in situ growth of MnCdS nanoparticles on thiol-functionalized UiO-66-based materials (UiOS-MCS). A series of characterization analyses showed that UiOS-MCS nanocomposites held favorable properties of efficient charge separation and migration, which thanked to well-matched band structure and tight interfacial contacts via thiol-linked bonds that greatly facilitated the transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. The optimal nanocomposite of 0.5UiOS-MCS exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, with an impressive hydrogen evolution of 3179.36 μmol g −1 h −1 and a significant removal of sulfide contaminants in the wastewater of about 90%, selectively generating valuable oxidation product of monomeric sulfur. The mechanism analysis demonstrated that the main photoactive species required for hydrogen production by photoreduction (electrons) and sulfide removal by photooxidation (holes) were independent of each other, and that the electron-hole division of collaboration ensured an efficient and synergistic redox reaction. This work offers a promising strategy for the recovery of energy stored in wastewater and environmental remediation.

Efficient carrier separation and high electron migration efficiency are essential for sustainable H 2 energy production via photocatalysis . In this work, a Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/Ti 3 C 2 MXene/g-C 3 N 4 all-solid-state Z-scheme photocatalyst is constructed by a series of processes, including low temperature calcination , etching, ultrasonication and solvothermal process. The appropriate energy band structures of g-C 3 N 4 and Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S enable the formation of the Z-scheme system, achieving efficient carrier separation. The Ti 3 C 2 MXene flakes assembled between g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets and Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S particles can accelerate the charge migration rate in the system. The optimized ternary composite exhibits the highest hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 13.7 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is much higher than that of the pure g-C 3 N 4 and Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S. Meanwhile, the apparent quantum yield (AQY) value of the composite at 420 nm reaches up to 24.07 % and exhibits high stability. Based on the characterization, the photocatalytic mechanism of carrier transfer in the Z-scheme heterojunction is also revealed. The finding of this article provides insights into the high efficiency of carrier transfer and separation in the photocatalytic reactions.

Surface Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S nanodomains form tight interfaces on CdMoO 4 . • The heterostructure reaches 55.47 mmol g -1 h -1 under visible light. • Hydrogen evolution is 5.35× and 5.02× that of the single components. • Interfacial charge transfer improves carrier separation and electron use. To overcome the limited visible-light response and rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers in CdMoO 4 , a CdMoO 4 /Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S surface-nanodomain-modified heterostructure was constructed through a solvothermal process and evaluated for visible-light-driven photocatalytic H 2 evolution. Structural characterizations revealed that Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S nanocomponents were uniformly distributed on the CdMoO 4 surface and formed intimate heterointerfaces with CdMoO 4 . Among the prepared composites, CMOCS3 with a CdMoO 4 /Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S mass ratio of 10:1 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity, achieving an H 2 evolution rate of 55.47 mmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹, which was 5.35 and 5.02 times those of pristine CdMoO 4 and Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is primarily attributed to the synergistic interaction between CdMoO 4 and Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S. The incorporation of Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S extends the visible-light absorption of the composite, while the heterointerface facilitates the migration and utilization of photogenerated charge carriers. In addition, the structural stability of CdMoO 4 combined with the visible-light responsiveness of Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S provides favorable conditions for improving the photocatalytic performance of the composite. CMOCS3 maintained appreciable H 2 evolution activity over four consecutive cycles, although a gradual decrease in activity was observed with increasing cycle number. Post-cycling TEM/HRTEM observations showed that the overall morphology and major local lattice features were largely preserved. This work provides an effective strategy for constructing highly efficient visible-light-responsive composite semiconductor photocatalysts.
