Mn3+/Mn4+ ion-doped carbon dots as fenton-like catalysts for fluorescence dual-signal detection of dopamine

Zhu Peide,Zhao Xuelin,Zhang Yuqi,Liu Yinping,Zhao Ziyi,Yang Ziji,Liu Xinzhu,Zhang Weiye,Guo Zixuan,Wang Xiao,Niu Yingchun,Xu Meng

Carbon dots (CDs), a new zero-dimensional material, have ignited a revolution in the fields of sensing, bioimaging, and biomedicine. However, the difficulty of preparing CDs with Fenton-like catalytic properties has seriously hindered their application in the diagnosis of oxidation/reduction biomolecules or metal ions. Here, an innovative method was successfully established to synthesize Mn3+/Mn4+ ion-doped blue-green fluorescent CDs with Fenton-like catalytic properties using manganese acetate as the manganese source. Specifically, the CDs prepared here were equipped with functional groups of -COOH, NH2, C=O, and Mn-O, offering the possibility to function as a fluorescence sensor. More importantly, the introduction of manganese acetate resulted in the preparation of CDs with Fenton-like catalytic properties, and the dual-signal fluorescence detection of dopamine (DA) was realized with linear ranges of 100–275 nM and 325–525 nM, and the detection limits were 3 and 12 nM, respectively. In addition, due to the Fenton-like catalytic activity of Mn3+/Mn4+ ion-doped CDs, the material has broad application prospects in the detection of oxidation/reduction biomolecules or metal ions related to disease diagnosis and prevention.

Tunable Zn2+/Mn3+ Vacancy Engineering in ZnMn2O4 Cathodes Boosts Zn2+ Kinetics for High-Performance Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Ao Sun,Yujuan Wu,Shou Chen,Xinglin Wei,Kun Ding,Baofeng Wang

Spinel-type ZnMn2O4 cathodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) offer high theoretical capacity and elemental abundance, yet their electrochemical performance is fundamentally hindered by Mn dissolution-induced structural instability and sluggish Zn2+ diffusion kinetics. Herein, we propose a tunable cationic vacancy engineering strategy for ZnMn2O4 cathodes, enabling selective introduction of Zn2+ or Mn3+ vacancies via a facile chemical coprecipitation method. Comprehensive characterizations confirm that these cationic vacancies significantly enhance electronic conductivity and accelerate Zn2+ diffusion kinetics. Specifically, the Zn-vacant Zn1–xMn2O4 cathode outperforms its Mn-vacant counterpart, leveraging strengthened Mn–O bonding and reduced electrostatic repulsion during Zn2+ insertion, delivers a high reversible capacity of 276.4 mAh g–1 at 0.5 A g–1, exceptional rate capability (retain 134.4 mAh g–1 at 2 A g–1), and long-term cyclability with 92% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 2 A g–1. Furthermore, a prototype pouch cell incorporating this engineered cathode achieves a superior capacity of 150 mAh g–1 at 0.5 A g–1, demonstrating its great potential for practical high-performance AZIBs.

Suppressing Mn3+-induced Jahn-teller distortion in LiMnxFe1-xPO4 via synergistic Mg2+ and Ti4+ dopant toward robust battery performance

Xuejie Zhang,Huijie Zhang,Yanyang Jia,Guihua Liu,Aijia Wei,Yongguang Zhang,Jingde Li

Innovatively proposed Mg 2+ & Ti 4+ co-doped to efficiently suppress Mn 3+ -induced Jahn-Teller distortion and stabilize LMFP's olivine framework. • In-situ characterizations combined with DFT calculations clarify the intrinsic mechanism of co-doped regulating LMFP's crystal/electronic structures. • Co-doped significantly boosts LMFP's electronic conductivity and capacitive contribution, realizing superior high-rate performance and structural reversibility. • Co-doped LMFP@C-MT reduces Mn dissolution by alleviating Jahn-Teller distortion, further enhancing the cathode's structural and electrochemical stability. LiMn x Fe 1-x PO 4 (LMFP) cathodes are considered promising candidates for next-generation lithium-ion (Li + ) batteries due to their high safety, low cost, environmental benignity, and relatively high energy density. However, they suffer from severe Jahn-Teller distortion and sluggish Li + kinetics, leading to poor structural stability and rate performance. Herein, a synergistic Mg 2+ and Ti 4+ co-doping strategy is proposed to concurrently regulate the crystal structure and electronic properties of LMFP. Structural and electrochemical analyses show that Mg 2+ and Ti 4+ effectively suppress Mn 3+ -induced Jahn-Teller distortion. This helps stabilize the olivine framework while causing a small shrinkage in the crystal lattice, thereby improving Li + diffusion capability. In situ XRD reveals that un-doped lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP@C) undergoes a distinct phase transition during the high-voltage plateau, as evidenced by peak splitting, whereas Mg 2+ and Ti 4+ co-doped lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP@C-MT) exhibits a continuous peak shift, indicative of a solid-solution reaction with improved structural reversibility. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrate that Mg 2+ lowers the Li + migration energy barrier, while Ti 4+ stabilizes the Mn electronic structure near the Fermi level. This synergistic effect suppresses Jahn-Teller distortion, thereby enhancing both structural stability and electrochemical kinetics. This enables the LMFP@C-MT cathode to deliver a high initial capacity of 158.35 mAh g −1 at 0.2C, along with outstanding cycling stability, retaining 91.39% capacity after 500 cycles at 1C. This work both presents an effective structural modification strategy and supplies theoretical guidance for the development of high-performance LMFP-based cathode materials. The LMFP@C-MT synthesized by the high-temperature solid-state method suppresses the Jahn–Teller distortion induced by Mn 3+ and stabilizes the lattice. Combined with the ordered carbon coating, it enhances the charge transfer kinetics, thereby achieving excellent structural reversibility and electrochemical performance. Low-valence lithium doping modulates the Mn3+/Mn4+ redox couple and stabilizes the P2 framework for high-rate sodium-ion cathodes

Yunqin Yang,Minyi Liao,Fanjun Tang,Xuanchen Wei,Donglou Ren,Tianquan Liang

P2-type Na 0.65 Mn 0.75 Ni 0.25 O 2 (NMNO) has been widely investigated as a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to its high specific capacity and excellent structural stability. However, deterioration of cycling stability and Na + diffusion kinetics occurs in the P2-NMNO cathode due to the irreversible P2–to–O2 phase transformation, reinforced Na + /vacancy ordering, Jahn–Teller effect and so on during electrochemical processes, especially at high voltages. In the quest to improve P2 cathodes for SIBs, the Na 0.65 Mn 0.75 Ni 0.25-x Li x O 2 ( x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) with Li substitution for Ni was studied. This deliberate substitution is found to regulate Na + site occupancy, disrupt cation ordering to enable faster ion diffusion, and effectively optimize the Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ redox couple, thereby suppressing the detrimental phase transition. As a synergistic result of these effects, the Li + -doped NMNO-Li0.1 cathode exhibits good electrochemical performance: it delivers 92.1 % capacity retention after 200 cycles at an ultrahigh rate of 20 C and achieves an increased Na + diffusion coefficient compared to the pristine material.

Controlled synthesis of Mn3(PO4)2 hollow spheres as biomimetic enzymes for selective detection of superoxide anions released by living cells

Wang Min-Qiang,Ye Cui,Bao Shu-Juan,Xu Mao-Wen

The authors have synthesized nanostructured manganese(II) phosphate hollow spheres [Mn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 HS] with tunable pore structure by using a micro-emulsion method. These, if deposited on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), are shown to be a viable material for electrochemical sensing of superoxide (radical) anion (O 2 ˙ − ) at a typical working voltage of 0.7 V (vs. SCE). Hence, they act as biomimetic enzymes that allow for the determination of O 2 ˙ − with a very low detection limit (1.35 nM), wide linear range (5 nM to 0.4 mM), and good long-term stability. The modified GCE was applied in-situ to the electrochemical determination of O 2 − that is released from human malignant melanoma cells and normal keratinocyte, and it showed excellent real time analytical capability. In our perception, the use of this material offers exciting opportunities in terms of implementing nanoscale transition metal phosphates as biomimetic enzymes in enzyme-free diagnostic sensors. Conceivably, these will offer higher sensitivity and longer durability than assays based on the use of natural enzymes. Micro-emulsion method-derived nanostructured manganese(II) phosphate hollow spheres [Mn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 HS] as biomimetic enzymes to sensitively detect superoxide anions released by living cells.

Designing alkaline-rich Ba/MnO2 catalysts for efficient oxidative coupling of alcohols and amines at low temperatures

Qiang Bao,Wenhui Feng,Yunfeng Hu,Zhenlu Wang,Guoliang Wu,Zhirui Chen,HaoCheng Li,Chenguang Shi

In this work, a series of alkaline earth metal-modified manganese oxide catalysts were prepared via the impregnation method and applied to the oxidative coupling reaction of alcohols and amines to imine. The prepared catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2-adsorption, field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), NH3-temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), CO2-temperature-programmed desorption (CO2-TPD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Among the catalysts, Ba/MnO2 showed the best catalytic performance in the reaction and exhibited the highest Mn3+/Mn4+ ratio, surface weak basic sites and a relatively small number of weak acidic sites. Lattice oxygen mobility and Mn3+/Mn4+ ratio were found to play important roles in the catalytic activity of aerobic reactions. The weak and medium basic sites on the catalyst surface can further promote the alcohol–amine oxidative coupling process, as they serve as active centers for the activation of benzyl alcohol, which is the rate-determining step for this oxidative coupling reaction.

SnO2-based solid solutions for CH4 deep oxidation: Quantifying the lattice capacity of SnO2 using an X-ray diffraction extrapolation method

Qi Sun,Xianglan Xu,Honggen Peng,Xiuzhong Fang,Wenming Liu,Jiawei Ying,Fan Yu,Xiang Wang

A series of SnO 2 -based catalysts modified by Mn, Zr, Ti and Pb oxides with a Sn/M (M = Mn, Zr, Ti and Pb) molar ratio of 9/1 were prepared by a co-precipitation method and used for CH 4 and CO oxidation . The Mn 3+ , Zr 4+ , Ti 4+ and Pb 4+ cations are incorporated into the lattice of tetragonal rutile SnO 2 to form a solid solution structure. As a consequence, the surface area and thermal stability of the catalysts are improved. Moreover, the oxygen species of the modified catalysts become easier to be reduced. Therefore, the oxidation activity over the catalysts was improved, except for the one modified by Pb oxide. Manganese oxide demonstrates the best promotional effects for SnO 2 . Using an X-ray diffraction extrapolation method, the lattice capacity of SnO 2 for Mn 2 O 3 was 0.135 g Mn 2 O 3 /g SnO 2 , which indicates that to form stable solid solution, only 21% Sn 4+ cations in the lattice can be maximally replaced by Mn 3+ . If the amount of Mn 3+ cations is over the capacity, Mn 2 O 3 will be formed, which is not favorable for the activity of the catalysts. The Sn rich samples with only Sn-Mn solid solution phase show higher activity than the ones with excess Mn 2 O 3 species.

Facile construction of nanocubic Mn3[Fe(CN)6]2@Pt based electrochemical DNA sensors for ultrafast precise determination of SARS-CoV-2

Mengjiao Zhu,Yu Liu,Meiyue Wang,Tao Liu,Zhenyu Chu,Wanqin Jin

Owing to the high mortality and strong infection ability of COVID-19, the early rapid diagnosis is essential to reduce the risk of severe symptoms and the loss of lung function. In clinic, the commonly used detection methods, including the computed tomography (CT) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), are often time-consuming with bulky instruments, which normally require more than one hour to report the results. To shorten the analytical period for testing the COVID-19 virus (SARS-CoV-2), we proposed an ultrafast and ultrasensitive DNA sensors to achieve an accurate determination of the DNA sequence by the RNA reverse transcription (rtDNA) of the SARS-CoV-2. A nanocubic architecture of the MnFe@Pt crystals was constructed to integrate both electrocatalysis and conductivity to greatly improve the biosensing performance. After the immobilization of a specific capture and report DNA on above nanocomposite, the rtDNA can be rapidly caught to the DNA sensor to form a double-helix structure, thus generating the current signal change. Within only 10 min, the as-prepared DNA sensors exhibited ultralow detection limit (1 × 10 −20 M) and wide linear detection range, together with an outstanding selectivity among various interfering substances.

Controllable growth on nano-graphite-supported ZrO2–MnOx bimetallic oxides for electrocatalytic antibiotic degradation: mechanism to boost the Mn3+/Mn4+ redox cycle

Si Duan,Guihong Lan,Xiaoting Yang,Yongqiang Liu,Haiyan Qiu,Bo Xu,Yuan Gao,Zhuang Xie

Antibiotic contamination has become one of the most pressing problems in the field of water purification. Using nano-graphite (nano-G) as a carbon carrier, a ZrO2–MnOx/nano-G composite electrode with high catalytic activity was prepared by a hot pressing method based on MnOx/nano-G prepared by a sol–gel method. The results showed that the ZrO2–MnOx/nano-G electrode reduces charge transfer resistance while improving surface oxygen desorption ability. MnOx can catalyze the two-electron reduction of O2 to produce H2O2, which can then be converted to ˙OH and ˙O2−. Thereafter, the results of free radical capture experiments confirmed that ˙O2− played a significant role in the electrocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) by a ZrO2–MnOx/nano-G composite electrode. Furthermore, the abundant hydroxyl groups on the surface of nano-G and ZrO2 particles can be used as active sites for catalyzing the Mn3+/Mn4+ redox reaction, resulting in the generation of additional free radicals. The high-efficiency electrocatalytic degradation of TC was achieved through the synergistic action of the three. Under optimal reaction conditions, the degradation rate of TC reached 93% after 120 min of electrolysis. ZrO2–MnOx/nano-G displayed satisfactory stability following 10 cycles of degradation experiments. Finally, the potential TC degradation pathway was investigated using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and density functional theory (DFT), and the degradation mechanism was clarified.

Elevating both capacity and voltage tolerance of P2-type layered cathodes with cooperative Al cation/F anion co-doping for advanced sodium-ion batteries

Cao Jiang,Biao Chen,Maowen Xu,Jian Jiang

The single ionic doping helps suppress the detrimental phase transition when P2-type layered cathodes are charged to a high voltage above 4.0 V ( vs. Na + /Na). However, this is realized at the sacrifice of their electrochemical redox centers and output capacities. To achieve both high voltage tolerance and capacity, we herein propose a cooperative Al cation and F anion co-doping strategy. The XANES detections affirm that substituting Ni/O with Al/F intends to augment the amount of highly active Mn 3+ cations in cathodes, making more contributions on specific capacities for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Besides, this co-doping treatment would disorder the transition metal ionic arrangements of cathodes, disrupting long-range Jahn-Teller effects and impeding other undesired phases generation. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, our designed Na 2/3 Ni 0.23 Al 0.1 Mn 2/3 O 1.95 F 0.05 (NAF) cathodes show a delivered capacity as high as 142.0 mAh g −1 (0.2C), and an impressive capacity retention of 86.7 % after all cycling. The in-situ XRD detections reveal no apparent O2 phase peaks emerge until 4.23 V upon deep Na + extraction from NAF. This work provides a key understanding toward cation/anion co-doping effects, opening up a useful avenue for rational design of practical P2-type cathodes for SIBs.

MnTiO3-driven low-temperature oxidative coupling of methane over TiO2-doped Mn2O3-Na2WO4/SiO2 catalyst

Pengwei Wang,Guofeng Zhao,Yu Wang,Yong Lu

Oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) is a promising method for the direct conversion of methane to ethene and ethane (C2 products). Among the catalysts reported previously, Mn2O3-Na2WO4/SiO2 showed the highest conversion and selectivity, but only at 800° to 900°C, which represents a substantial challenge for commercialization. We report a TiO2-doped Mn2O3-Na2WO4/SiO2 catalyst by using Ti-MWW zeolite as TiO2 dopant as well as SiO2 support, enabling OCM with 26% conversion and 76% C2-C3 selectivity at 720°C because of MnTiO3 formation. MnTiO3 triggers the low-temperature Mn2+↔Mn3+ cycle for O2 activation while working synergistically with Na2WO4 to selectively convert methane to C2-C3. We also prepared a practical Mn2O3-TiO2-Na2WO4/SiO2 catalyst in a ball mill. This catalyst can be transformed in situ into MnTiO3-Na2WO4/SiO2, yielding 22% conversion and 62% selectivity at 650°C. Our results will stimulate attempts to understand more fully the chemistry of MnTiO3-governed low-temperature activity, which might lead to commercial exploitation of a low-temperature OCM process.

Full Activation of Mn4+/Mn3+ Redox in Na4MnCr(PO4)3 as a High-Voltage and High-Rate Cathode Material for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Wei Zhang,Huangxu Li,Zhian Zhang,Ming Xu,Yanqing Lai,Shu-Lei Chou

Developing high-voltage cathode materials is critical for sodium-ion batteries to boost energy density. NASICON (Na super-ionic conductor)-structured Na x MnM(PO 4 ) 3 materials (M represents transition metal) have drawn increasing attention due to their features of robust crystal framework, low cost, as well as high voltage based on Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ and Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ redox couples. However, full activation of Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ redox couple within NASICON framework is still a great challenge. Herein, a novel NASICON-type Na 4 MnCr(PO 4 ) 3 material with highly reversible Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ redox reaction is discovered. It proceeds a two-step reaction with voltage platforms centered at 4.15 and 3.52 V versus Na + /Na, delivering a capacity of 108.4 mA h g −1 . The Na 4 MnCr(PO 4 ) 3 cathode also exhibits long durability over 500 cycles and impressive rate capability up to 10 C. The galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) test shows fast Na diffusivity which is further verified by density functional theory calculations. The high electrochemical activity derives from the 3D robust framework structure, fast kinetics, and pseudocapacitive contribution. The sodium storage mechanism of the Na 4 MnCr(PO 4 ) 3 cathode is deeply studied by ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), revealing that both solid-solution and two-phase reactions are involved in the Na + ions extraction/insertion process.
