Cold protection made easy: A fiber-based fabric with enhanced sunlight absorption and unidirectional sweat transport

Yannan Chen,Xuejie Yue,Dongya Yang,Yuqi Li,Tao Zhang,Fengxian Qiu

In cold climates, maintaining body temperature with conventional fabrics becomes increasingly challenging, while the negative impact of heavy clothing on outdoor work is becoming more pronounced, prompting the development of new lightweight insulating fabrics. Herein, a bilayer fabric MnOOH-NPs/polydopamine/cotton-Maillard reaction zein (MPC-MRZ) with reinforced full-spectrum sunlight absorption and asymmetric wettability is reported. With a thickness similar to cotton, MPC-MRZ exhibits superior insulation, unidirectional sweat transport, and UV resistance without relying on external energy. Both lab and outdoor tests demonstrate exceptional sensitivity and rapid photothermal conversion (∼83.7 % sunlight absorption), resulting in a notable 10.15 °C temperature compared with cotton. The Maillard reaction-induced cross-linking significantly boosts MRZ side hydrophobicity to 119.3°, leading to substantial asymmetric wetting (0° on MPC side) at heterogeneous interfaces. This enables rapid transportation of sweat to the external environment (3.83 s) without reverse penetration, and in conjunction with photothermal conversion, maintains surface dryness and wet comfort for sustained thermal insulation. Overall, this work aims at the comfort of human body, effectively combines thermal insulation and humidity control, which has a good application prospect in plateau areas.

Direct upcycling of Mn-rich residues into γ-MnOOH for efficient Alkaline OER

Wenting Jia,Lin Guo,Zhao Yu,Zhiqiang Li,Pengge Ning,Hongbin Cao

The growing stream of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries from electronic and mobility products has created a pressing need to manage solid residues generated during battery-recycling operations. In ammonia-based leaching flowsheets used for selective critical metal recovery, manganese-rich solid residues (e.g., MnCO 3 or ammonium manganese sulfite/sulfate) are intentionally formed to avoid complex purification. Yet they are often retained as low-value waste due to impurities from unreacted cores. Here, we demonstrate a waste-to-resource pathway that bypasses solution phase recovery by upcycling manganese-rich residues directly into a γ-MnOOH alkaline oxygen evolution catalyst. The residue with MnCO 3 as the main precursor delivers the best performance, with an overpotential of 457.65 mV at 100 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 60.37 mV dec −1 , demonstrating a favorable comparison with commercial noble metal and other benchmarks using commercial transition metal salts as raw materials. Structure-activity analysis attributes the performance to the preferential expression of the high-index facet. This direct solid-state route avoids reagent-grade manganese precursors, eliminates gypsum-forming steps, and cuts life cycle economic and energy demand. The work illustrates a practical waste-to-resource strategy that strengthens manganese security and advances circular economy goals in clean energy technologies.

Efficient degradation of phenol by MnOOH-rGO composite with high peroxymonosulfate utilization efficiency

Huanxin Zhao,Yu Cao,Yuqi Liu,He Wang,Huixin Yu

A high-performance, durable, low-cost, and environmentally friendly catalyst is highly desired in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for water treatment . Considering the activity of Mn(Ⅲ) and the superior catalytic properties of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, rGO-modified MnOOH nanowires (MnOOH-rGO) were fabricated by a hydrothermal method for phenol degradation. The results showed that the composite synthesized at 120 °C with 1 wt% rGO dopant exhibited the best performance for phenol degradation. Nearly 100% of the phenol was removed by MnOOH-rGO within 30 min, which is higher than the removal rate of pure MnOOH (70%). The effects of catalyst dosages, PMS concentration, pH, temperature, and anions (Cl − , NO 3 − , HPO 4 2− and HCO 3 − ) on phenol degradation were investigated. The removal rate of chemical oxygen demand (COD) reached 26.4%, with a low molar ratio of PMS to phenol at 5:1 and a high PMS utilization efficiency (PUE) of 88.8%. The phenol removal rate remained more than 90% after five recycle with less than 0.1 mg L −1 leakage of manganese ions . Together with the results of radical quenching experiments, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR), electron transfer and 1 O 2 were proved to dominate the activation process. During the direct electrons transfer process, the electrons transfer from the phenol to PMS by using the Mn(Ⅲ) as the mediate with a stoichiometric ratio between PMS and phenol at 1:2, which mainly contributed to the high PUE. This work provides new insight into a high-performance Mn(Ⅲ) based catalyst on PMS activation with high PUE, good reusability, and environmentally friendly for removing organic pollutants.

Enhanced norfloxacin degradation by visible-light-driven Mn3O4/γ-MnOOH photocatalysis under weak magnetic field

Ning Li,Mengting He,Xukai Lu,Lan Liang,Rui Li,Beibei Yan,Guanyi Chen

A valence-state heterojunction Mn 3 O 4 /γ-MnOOH was synthesized for norfloxacin (NOR) degradation under concurrent visible light and magnetic field. The charge carriers could transfer between the valence state components facilely, inhibiting recombination of photo-induced electron-holes significantly. Efficient NOR degradation by Mn 3 O 4 /γ-MnOOH was realized at 98.8% (rate constant of 0.0720 min −1 ) within 60 min under magnetic field assisted visible light. In neutral media, the positively charged NOR and negatively charged Mn 3 O 4 /γ-MnOOH would arrange in an oriented manner in the presence of magnetic field, providing more active sites for NOR during photocatalysis . Moreover, the opposite Lorentz forces contributed to the attractive interactions between NOR and Mn 3 O 4 /γ-MnOOH, accelerating NOR degradation with lower active energy. Quenching experiment showed that ∙O 2 − and h + played dominant roles in NOR degradation. Attractively, this study shed new lights on an innovative strategy of magnetic field assisted photocatalysis for refractory contaminants remediation from water.

A novel electrochemical sensor based on MnOOH nanorod/expanded graphite for sensitive monitoring of metronidazole

Xiaomin Hu,Yuanyuan Zhang,Ting Zeng,Qijin Wan,Kangbing Wu,Nianjun Yang

Strict quantification of metronidazole (MNZ, one kind of nitroimidazole antibiotic) plays extraordinary roles for human health due to the serious toxicity arose from overuse of MNZ. In this research, a novel electrochemical sensor is proposed for sensitive quantitation of MNZ. This sensor is constructed using a composite of MnOOH nanorods and expanded graphite (MnOOH/EG), synthesized by a hydrothermal method . The morphological analyses and electrochemical capability tests through various analytical techniques (e.g., microscopic and electrochemical methods) exposit that MnOOH/EG composite displays prominent electrocatalytic activity and sensing capability for quantification of MNZ. A synergistic effect between EG and MnOOH is revealed, where EG offers a high electrode active area and a strong electron-transport ability, while MnOOH features outstanding electrocatalytic behavior. This novel electrochemical sensor displays high sensitivity toward voltammetric quantification of MNZ with detection limit of 17 nM. Moreover, this developed MnOOH/EG electrochemical sensor also demonstrates prominent reproducibility and repeatability as well as high selectivity in the quantitative analysis of MNZ. Beyond that, the constructed sensor has been also successfully applied in quantitative analysis of MNZ in commercial drugs and environmental water samples. Consequently, the MnOOH/EG composite presented here has strong potential to be employed as a sensing material for constructing electrochemical sensor in widespread fields.

MnOOH-seeded growth of uniform LiMn2O4 nanoparticles on CNT for high-performance electrochemically switched lithium extraction

Jing Li,Beichen Sun,Wenbiao Ma,Xiao Du,Fengfeng Gao,Zhonglin Zhang,Xiaogang Hao

Electrochemically switched ion exchange (ESIX) is a promising technology for lithium extraction from high Mg/Li ratio salt lake brines, yet conventional lithium manganese oxide composite electrodes suffer from loose interfacial binding and particle agglomeration. To address this issue, for the first time, we developed a precursor-hydrothermal lithiation strategy that integrates MnOOH crystal seed pre-anchoring and C-O-Mn interfacial chemical bonding to fabricate a uniform and stable carbon nanotube/lithium manganese oxide composite membrane electrode. In this strategy, MnOOH nanoparticles were pre-loaded onto carbonylated carbon nanotubes as crystal seeds and subsequently converted into spinel lithium manganese oxide, while the C-O-Mn interfacial chemical bonds were formed to anchor the lithium manganese oxide nanoparticles onto the carbon nanotube scaffold. The resulting composite membrane exhibited a low charge transfer resistance of 21.5 Ω and fast lithium ion diffusion kinetics (2.68 × 10 −12  cm 2 ·s −1 ). When tested in actual brine from the Qarhan Salt Lake, it achieved a lithium intercalation capacity of 20.21 mg·g −1 and a Li + /Mg 2+ separation factor of 116, while maintaining excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention rate of 93.07%, significantly outperforming the control samples prepared by conventional methods. Mechanistic analysis suggests that the C-O-Mn interfacial chemical bonds contribute to enhanced electron/ion transport, facilitate the stabilization of the interfacial structure, and help suppress the detachment of active materials, thereby substantially enhancing the electrode performance. This work provides an interfacial engineering strategy for high-performance ESIX electrodes.

New insights into MnOOH/peroxymonosulfate system for catalytic oxidation of 2,4-dichlorophenol: Morphology dependence and mechanisms

Dan He,Yicheng Li,Cong Lyu,Lan Song,Wei Feng,Shengyu Zhang

Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have received increasing attention as viable technology for recalcitrant organics removal from polluted waters. As for heterogeneous catalyst, it is crucial to reveal the effect of morphology on its catalytic activity and mechanism, providing guidelines for rational design of morphology-dependent catalysts. Hence, in this study, we selected manganese oxyhydroxide (MnOOH) as the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator and synthesized different morphological MnOOH with the same crystal structure. The catalytic activity of MnOOH follows: nanowires  > multi-branches >  nanorods . Different morphological MnOOH had different physical and chemical characterization such as specific surface area, Lewis sites, ζ-potential and redox potential , which played positive roles in catalytic activity of MnOOH as PMS activator. Unexpectedly, it was found that ζ-potential was more crucial than specific surface area, redox potential and Lewis sites. Notably, nanowires exhibited higher positive zeta potential, which was favor of promoting interfacial reactivity between HSO 5 − and surface of MnOOH. Furthermore, •OH, SO 4 • − , O 2 • − and 1 O 2 , were involved in the MnOOH/PMS system. Moreover, the cycle of Mn (III)/Mn (II) accelerated MnOH + formation. This study provided a new understanding of manganese-catalyzed peroxymonosulfate activation and elucidated the relationships between morphology of catalyst and its catalytic activity.

Environment contaminated with bisphenols contaminants including bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), and bisphenol F (BPF) poses a serious threat to global public health. This study successfully developed a novel portable electrochemical sensing platform based on a composite of MnOOH nanorods and expanded graphite (MnOOH/EG) and smartphone for real-time quantitative detection of BPA, BPS and BPF. By combining MnOOH nanomaterials with the highly conductive EG, the prepared MnOOH/EG nanocomposite leverages the advantages of both components. EG component provides a large electroactive surface area and rapid electron transfer rate, significantly enhancing the response signal of the modified electrode. The abundant Mn (III) active centers in MnOOH endow the composite with excellent electrocatalytic capability. Experimental results demonstrate that this electrochemical sensing platform exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic oxidation activity and electrochemical sensing performance for these bisphenols with a low detection limit of 1.4 nM, 34 nM and 1.2 nM for BPA, BPS and BPF. The sensor also demonstrated a wide linear detection range, good selectivity, stable reproducibility, and excellent stability. Furthermore, when integrated with smartphone, the sensor demonstrated successful application in detecting bisphenols in complex real water and soil samples, exhibiting excellent recovery rates. These findings indicate that this study provides a novel sensing platform with application potential for achieving highly sensitive detection of bisphenols contaminants in the environment. Voltage-induced rapid and deep reconstruction of rationally designed MnCr-LDH: a pathway to efficient water oxidation

Chaoen Li,Yongbin Zhang,Li Che,HaiYang Gao,Honglin Gao,YuYang Zhou,Aiyi Dong

Reconstruction-derived oxyhydroxides possessing high-valent metal centers have been extensively investigated in recent years for their potential to enhance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. However, the reconstruction processes and underlying reaction mechanisms of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) remain insufficiently explored. Investigating catalyst reconstruction and reaction pathways presents significant challenges. The Mn x Cr y LDH catalysts demonstrate enhanced OER performance after 20 cycles of cyclic voltammetry (CV) activation. Among them, the Mn 3 Cr 2 LDH 20th sample exhibits particularly low overpotentials of only 354.0 mV at room temperature and 272.4 mV at an industrial-relevant temperature (65 °C) to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, the catalyst maintains outstanding performance in alkaline natural seawater. CV cycling triggers rapid structural reorganization, leading to the formation of highly OER active β-MnOOH and simultaneously promoting Cr leaching. This Cr leaching generates abundant defect sites, which not only expose additional electroactive centers but also significantly increase the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA). Experimental evidence strongly suggests that the derived β-MnOOH phase boosts OER activity mainly via the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM). This work highlights the robust potential of manganese-based OER catalysts for direct seawater electrolysis.

In-situ phase reconstruction of MnOOH/δ-MnO2 steering interfacial electronic regulation to boost electron transfer process for water purification

Cheng Han,Zhe Zhang,Yin Wei,Lanlan Liang,Xinao Zhao,Danna Yang,Zhongze Cui,Chuanliang Zhao,Liwei Yang

PVP-assisted synthesis enabled in-situ δ-MnO 2 -to-MnOOH reconstruction. • MnOOH/δ-MnO 2 interfaces enhanced PMS adsorption and electron transfer. • Surface-bound PMS* species enabled selective ETP-dominated TC oxidation. • The system maintained high TC removal in real lake water and groundwater. • The catalytic membrane achieved stable TC removal at low PMS dosage. Developing non-radical peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation pathways that resist interference from complex water matrices remains challenging for the treatment of emerging contaminants in practical applications. A polyvinyl pyrrolidone-assisted hydrothermal strategy was therefore developed to induce the partial in - situ reconstruction of δ-MnO 2 into MnOOH. The resulting MnOOH/δ-MnO 2 interface directed PMS activation toward an electron transfer process (ETP) for tetracycline (TC) removal. The catalyst achieved nearly complete TC removal within 30 min and maintained high activity under complex water matrix conditions. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) analysis revealed that the MnOOH/δ-MnO 2 composite interface strengthened PMS adsorption and promoted interfacial charge redistribution. These effects facilitated electron transfer during TC oxidation. Surface-bound PMS* species on the MnOOH/δ-MnO 2 interface acted as electron-accepting centers, steering TC oxidation toward an ETP-dominated non-radical pathway. The MnOOH/δ-MnO 2 catalytic membrane maintained above 98% TC removal in real water matrices under continuous-flow conditions at only 0.2 mM PMS. These results demonstrate the promising practical applicability of the system. Life cycle assessment further indicated a comparatively low environmental burden for the MnOOH/δ-MnO 2 /PMS system. These findings provide a mechanistic basis for designing manganese oxide/oxyhydroxide catalysts through polymer-induced interfacial reconstruction and offer a practical strategy for ETP-dominated PMS activation in complex water treatment Download: Download high-res image (222KB) Download: Download full-size image

MnOOH nanoparticles integrated nitrogen doped porous nanosheet-like carbon network as a non-noble catalyst for electro-oxidation of sodium borohydride

Hui Wang,Jieting Ding,Palanisamy Kannan,Palaniappan Subramanian,Shan Ji

Nitrogen doped carbon-supported with various ratio of electro-active manganite nanoparticles (MnO–NPCs) as a facile, low-cost, and non-noble electrocatalyst is synthesized for electro-oxidation of borohydride . Transmission electron micrographs show the size of MnO nanoparticles in NPC is about 3.8 ± 0.2 nm with a definite lattice parameter and randomly distributed into the entire nanosheet-like porous carbon network. Survey X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) of MnO–NPCs sample reveals the presence of Mn element; and Mn–O–Mn and Mn–O–H peaks from O 1s, indicating the effective insertion of MnO nanoparticles onto the NPC surface. Electrochemically transformed MnOOH–NPCs are further explored as effective catalysts toward the electro-oxidation of borohydride in 1.0 M alkaline NaOH solution. Among the catalysts with different ratios, MnOOH–NPC-2 displays higher catalytic performance (~19.9 mA ⋅ cm −2 ) with low-onset polarization potential (−0.65 V) towards borohydride electro-oxidation. The obtained results are mainly owing to (i) the unique nanosheet-like structure of nitrogen doped carbon network access large amount of MnOOH nanoparticles (without any aggregation) through their numerous porous-structure with high-specific surface area (821 m 2  g −1 ), (ii), the presence of intrinsic synergetic activity between porous carbon nanosheets and MnOOH nanoparticles, and (iii) the effective interaction of Mn 2+ ions with OH − ions to form Mn(OH) 2 , which mediates improved catalytic activity of borohydride electro-oxidation.

Mn2N0.86/Mn4N-derived MnOOH and Pt dual co-catalysts work in synergy to drive g-C3N4 to achieve photocatalytic overall water splitting

Xunfu Zhou,Shiying Song,Xiaoxing Yu,Zhongda Wu,Zhanhao Xiao,Zuofang Yao,Xiaoqin Zhou,Jin Luo,Xuliang Fan,Xiaosong Zhou

Polymer carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) demonstrates a thermodynamically favorable profile for photocatalytic overall water splitting. Nonetheless, the practical catalytic performance is limited by slow reaction kinetics, mainly because of the inadequate quantity of surface redox-active sites. It is evident that pristine g-C 3 N 4 shows minimal activity in the photocatalytic process of overall water splitting. Herein, we developed a strategy for achieving pure water splitting using photoexcited g-C 3 N 4 with MnOOH and Pt serving as redox cocatalysts. The innovation of this work is based on the deposition of Mn 2 N 0.86 /Mn 4 N onto g-C 3 N 4 as a precursor material. This precursor undergoes in-situ hydrolysis to form Mn(OH) 2 and in-situ photo-oxidation to generate MnOOH, which acts as an oxygen evolution cocatalyst by capturing photogenerated holes and facilitating the oxygen evolution reaction. Concurrently, H 2 PtCl 6 is employed as a precursor and undergoes in-situ photo-reduction to form Pt nanoparticles, which serve as a hydrogen evolution cocatalyst by capturing electrons and promoting the hydrogen evolution reaction. With the synergistic effect of these dual cocatalysts, efficient photocatalytic water splitting was achieved, yielding hydrogen (11.64 μmol h −1 ) and oxygen (5.47 μmol h −1 ) in a nearly 2:1 stoichiometric ratio under light irradiation.
