High-Performance Alkaline Freshwater and Seawater Hydrogen Catalysis by Sword-Head Structured Mo2N-Ni3Mo3N Tunable Interstitial Compound Electrocatalysts

Zhixiao Zhu,Li Luo,Yanxiang He,Muhammad Mushtaq,Jieqiong Li,Hao Yang,Zeba Khanam,Jing Qu,Zhongmin Wang,M.-Sadeeq Balogun

Realizing efficient electrocatalysts is a stepping stone toward achieving high-performance alkaline water/seawater electrolysis, but remains a crucial challenge. Herein, heterogeneous Mo 2 N/Ni 3 Mo 3 N electrocatalysts on nickel foam (denoted MN-NMN/NF) that is stable and active for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both alkaline water/seawater are demonstrated. The optimized MN-NMN09/NF achieves an ultralow HER overpotential of 11 mV@10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 m KOH electrolyte, which is not only superior to the benchmark Pt/C catalysts but also the best reported ever among NiMo-based electrocatalysts in an alkaline environment. Successively, the optimized MN-NMN09/NF electrocatalyst can drive HER current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm −2 using low overpotentials of 9.37 and 123 mV in 1.0 m KOH seawater electrolyte, which remains durable after 120 h long-term electrolysis at a constant current density of 500 mA cm −2 . In situ Raman analysis reveals that the enhanced performance is attributed to the accelerated H 2 O adsorption and OH dissociation processes on the MN-NMN surfaces. Theoretical analysis further confirms that rapid H 2 O adsorption-dissociation kinetics and H adsorption-conversion kinetics on the Ni 3 Mo 3 N/NiOOH and Ni 3 Mo 3 N/MoO x surfaces result in boosted HER capability. This work depicts a significant potential for designing stable and efficient hydrogen production electrocatalysts for both alkaline water and seawater electrolysis.

Mo2N Enhanced Fenton-Like Process: Role of Mo Reducibility and N Adsorption

Chen Shiqi,Huang Zhixuan,He Wentao,Wang Xinyu,Yang Zhiwei,Zhang Jing

Molybdenum nitride, because of the strong metal-support interaction between nitrogen and the metal, exhibits activity superior to that of bare metals, demonstrating its effectiveness as a co-catalyst to address the slow kinetics of the iron reduction in the Fenton process. Here, we introduced Mo 2 N as a co-catalyst to accelerate the cycles of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ within a Fenton-like system consisting of Fe 3+ and H 2 O 2 , thereby enhancing the activation of hydrogen peroxide to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). The system demonstrates excellent recyclability and stability. XPS spectroscopic analyses reveal that Mo(III) and Mo(IV) species on the Mo 2 N surface are capable of reducing free Fe(III), while FTIR analyses show nitrogen (N) and nitrogen oxide (NO x ) facilitate the adsorption and coordination of iron. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous reduced iron species are active in the activation of H 2 O 2 . EPR spectroscopy further confirms that the primary ROS generated are hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide anions (·O 2 − ). This study not only underscores the feasibility of Mo 2 N-based Fenton-like systems but also provides a new strategy for promoting the practical application of Fenton chemistry. Graphical

Functionalized 3D Mo2N Current Collectors Drive Multi-Phase Ni-based Synergy and Mitigate Surface Reconstruction for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Catalysis

Meilian Tu,Zhixiao Zhu,Hao Yang,M.-Sadeeq Balogun,Yongchao Huang,Yexiang Tong

Electrochemical water splitting is a promising approach for sustainable hydrogen production, but the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a bottleneck due to sluggish kinetics, poor activity, and limited stability and scalability. Here, a Mo 2 N-functionalized nickel is designed foam (NF@Mo 2 N) and subsequently transform into a Mo 2 N/NiSe/Ni 2 P multi-phase heterostructure through selenization and phosphorization, to address these challenges. The optimized NF@Mo 2 N/NiSe/Ni 2 P catalyst integrates three key strategies: (I) functionalizing NF with Mo 2 N to enhance conductivity and charge transfer, (II) engineering a collaborative multi-interface heterostructure to optimize active sites and reaction kinetics, and (III) precisely controlling phase formation through selenization and phosphorization to mitigate surface reconstruction and ensure long-term stability. The catalyst not only achieves an overpotential of 242 mV@10 mA cm −2 and remarkable stability over 350 h, but also achieves a low overpotential of 395 mV at a high current density of 800 mA cm −2 , outperforming the pristine other control samples. Theoretical analysis reveals that the Mo 2 N-stabilized NiSe/Ni 2 P heterostructure on NF enhances conductivity and optimizes adsorption energies of OER intermediates, leading to improved catalytic performance and stability. This work provides a new strategy for designing high-performance, non-precious metal OER catalysts for industrial applications and advancing sustainable hydrogen production.

Cluster-like Mo2N anchoring on reduced graphene oxide as the efficient and deep-degree oxidative desulfurization catalyst

Weizhuang Song,Dongxu Wang,Xianyun Yue,Chengxu Jin,Yangchen Wu,Yu Shi,Jiancong Liu,Aiping Wu,Chungui Tian,Honggang Fu

Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) has been a promising technology for removing sulfur compounds from fuel oil under mild conditions. It is essential to design ODS catalyst exposing plentiful accessible active sites, but it remains a challenge. Here, we have reported the design of cluster-like Mo2N catalyst (1.5 nm) uniformly dispersed on graphene surface by anchoring PMo12 polyoxometalate clusters on polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified graphite oxide (GO). The obtained Mo2N/rGO-A catalyst has highly exposed active sites and plentiful accessible surface. Importantly, Mo2N catalyst can readily activate oxidant to generate active Mo2N-peroxo intermediates. In the ODS reaction of dibenzothiophene (DBT) with H2O2 as the oxidant, the catalyst can achieve the complete removal of sulfur compounds (1000 ppm) within 15 min, with a reaction rate constant k of 1.94 × 10-1 min-1 at 60 °C, being superior to the corresponding Mo-O-based catalysts, large-sized Mo2N/rGO-D catalyst and the most of the reported transition metal-based catalysts. Furthermore, the catalyst shows good cycling stability with no obvious deactivation after eight cycles. The ODS reaction of DBT over Mo2N/rGO-A catalyst mainly follows a non-radical oxidation mechanism with DBTO2 (dibenzothiophene sulfone) being the only oxidation product based on the free radical scavenger experiment and GC-MS analysis. This work has important implications for the design of efficient and stable small-sized Mo-based catalyst for ODS of fuel oil.

A Highly Active Porous Mo2C-Mo2N Heterostructure on Carbon Nanowalls/Diamond for a High-Current Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Zhaofeng Zhai,Chuyan Zhang,Bin Chen,Lusheng Liu,Haozhe Song,Bing Yang,Ziwen Zheng,Junyao Li,Xin Jiang,Nan Huang

Developing non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts operating in high-current densities is highly demanded for the industry-level electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we report the facile preparation of binder-free Mo2C-Mo2N heterostructures on carbon nanowalls/diamond (CNWs/D) via ultrasonic soaking followed by an annealing treatment. The experimental investigations and density functional theory calculations reveal the downshift of the d-band center caused by the heterojunction between Mo2C/Mo2N triggering highly active interfacial sites with a nearly zero ∆GH*value. Furthermore, the 3D-networked CNWs/D, as the current collector, features high electrical conductivity and large surface area, greatly boosting the electron transfer rate of HER occurring on the interfacial sites of Mo2C-Mo2N. Consequently, the self-supporting Mo2C-Mo2N@CNWs/D exhibits significantly low overpotentials of 137.8 and 194.4 mV at high current densities of 500 and 1000 mA/cm2, respectively, in an alkaline solution, which far surpass the benchmark Pt/C (228.5 and 359.3 mV) and are superior to most transition-metal-based materials. This work presents a cost-effective and high-efficiency non-precious metal-based electrocatalyst candidate for the electrochemical hydrogen production industry. Keywords:hydrogen evolution reaction;high current density;carbon nanowalls;diamond;Mo2C;Mo2N;heterostructure

Nanostructured zig-zag γ-Mo2N thin films produced by glancing angle deposition for flexible symmetrical solid-state supercapacitors

Zecui Gao,Tengfei Zhang,Qimin Wang,Paul Heinz Mayrhofer

The performance of electrochemical capacitors strongly depends on their accessible surface area, chemical stability, and electrical conductivity. Simple columnar and zig-zag γ-Mo 2 N thin-film electrodes were prepared by magnetron sputtering. The latter is obtained by glancing angle deposition (GLAD), which is known for open porous structures due to the ballistic shadowing effect. As intended, the zig-zag structured γ-Mo 2 N electrode presents an outstanding area capacitance of 248 mF/cm 2 at a scan speed of 50 mV/s, which is 4 times higher than that of the simple columnar one. Both of them exhibit excellent cycling stability of 95 % over 20,000 cycles (at 200 mV/s). The symmetrical solid-state supercapacitor prepared with the zig-zag structured γ-Mo 2 N thin film delivers an excellent power density of 107.1 W/cm 3 at 33.8 mWh/cm 3 , and its volumetric capacitance is ∼ 3.5 times higher than the simple columnar structured γ-Mo 2 N device. Bending tests of such solid-state γ-Mo 2 N supercapacitors proved their mechanical flexibility to a bending angel of even 107°. Based on these studies we can conclude that the highly porous zig-zag structured γ-Mo 2 N-based electrodes prepared by GLAD combine outstanding electrochemical energy storage capabilities with excellent mechanical flexibility.

Heterogeneous Interface Engineering of 1D Hybrid Nanobelts Decorated with Mo2N–MoxC Nanoparticles for Boosting Microwave Absorption

Rui Xue,Rong Qiang,Yulong Shao,Lei Rong,Fangjie Ren,Na Xiao,Yuancheng Ding,Zheng Guo,Qing Miao,Caihong Chen

Heterogeneous interface engineering is a key strategy for obtaining dielectric absorbers with a high microwave absorption (MA) performance. In this study, a one-step carbonization–nitridation process is utilized to generate an abundant nanoscale dense heterogeneous interface on the surface of one-dimensional hybrid nanobelts (Mo2N–MoxC/NC). A suitable pyrolysis temperature introduces highly dispersed Mo2N–MoxC heterogeneous units to the carbon matrix, which effectively suppresses the agglomeration of nanoparticles and dissipates the energy of the electromagnetic waves through interfacial interactions. Benefiting from high conductivity, enhanced dielectric response, and abundant active sites of the nanobelts, Mo2N–MoxC/NC exhibits remarkable MA properties with a maximum reflection loss of up to −61.3 dB and a maximum response bandwidth of 4.6 GHz. The MA capacity was analyzed using the radar cross-section (RCS) reduction value, calculated by a computer simulation technique. The optimum RCS reduction value for the material was determined to be 21.75 dBm2. This work underscores the synergistic effect of heterointerface engineering and dielectric multicomponents on MA, providing inspiration and strategies for the rational construction of multiple heterogeneous structures.

Pd/Mo2N-TiO2 as efficient catalysts for promoted selective hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol: A green bio-reducing preparation method

Xiqiang Tian,Muhammad Zahid,Jiang Li,Wang Sun,Xiaoyu Niu,Yujun Zhu

The addition of a suitable co-catalyst is an encouraging way to enhance the catalytic performance of Pd based catalyst with low content. Herein, we describe an easy synthesis of Mo 2 N-TiO 2 with well-dispersed Mo 2 N nanoparticles through one pot evaporation-induced self-assembly and nitridation treatment method. Moreover, a green bio-reductive approach with Catalpa Fruit ( CF ) extract was adopted to fabricate Pd/Mo 2 N-TiO 2 catalysts for promoting selective hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) as model reaction. Among these Pd/Mo 2 N-TiO 2 catalysts, 0.8 wt%Pd/Mo 2 N-TiO 2 exhibits significantly high catalytic activity for selective hydrogenation of various nitrophenols and cinnmaldehyde. Importantly, the catalytic activity of the catalyst prepared by the reduction method of the CF extract is higher than that prepared by the reduction method of NaBH 4 . A serials of characterization, including XRD, N 2 adsorption–desorption, TEM, XPS, CO chemisorption and CO-FTIR etc., was carried out to investigate the influence of the prepared method on the surface Pd species and activity. The high performance can be attributed to the specific nanostructure characteristics of the catalyst and the good synergistic effect between Pd and Mo 2 N, improving the dispersion of Pd nanoparticles atoms and the exposure of more active Pd atoms (surface Pd 0 species) on 0.8 wt%Pd/Mo 2 N-TiO 2 due to the CF extract as reductant.

Nitrogen-Rich Porous Carbon Nanotubes Coated Co/Mo2N Composites Derived from Metal-Organic Framework as Efficient Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysts

Shiang Li,Yuehong Xie,Chao Feng,Afaq Hassan,Jide Wang

Noble metal catalysts such as Pt/C and RuO2are the most efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts and show excellent activity. However, their high costs, scarcity, single function, and weak durability impede their large-scale practical application. Therefore, it is paramount to design bifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity, long durability, and low cost. In this work, we used the functionalized modification and hierarchical porous structure of MOFs and adjusted the ratio of Co/Mo atoms to prepare uniformly dispersed nanospheres. The uniform porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes coated with Co/Mo2N composites were obtained by trapping the volatile CNxduring high-temperature pyrolysis via a vapor deposition strategy. The physical and chemical properties of the materials were analyzed by various characterization methods such as XRD, XPS, TEM, SEM, Raman, and BET. Notably, CoMoN@NCNTs-700 exhibited excellent ORR/OER bifunctional electrocatalytic activity in alkaline conditions due to the synergistic effect of porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes and the unique heterostructure of Co/Mo2N. In 0.1 M KOH, its ORR half-wave potential was E1/2= 0.78 V, with a limiting current density even reached to 5.3 mA cm−2and its operating potential was 1.60 V at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. At the same time, CoMoN@NCNTs-700 also showed better stability and methanol resistance than the commercial catalysts. This work provides a valuable reference for the design and construction of inexpensive non-noble metal bifunctional electrocatalysts.Keywords:metal-organic framework;N-doped carbon nanotubes;Co/Mo2N unique heterostructure;bifunctional electrocatalyst

Fabrication of nitrogen-carbon mediated γ-Mo2N nanocomposite based electrochemical sensor for rapid and sensitive determination of antioxidant 6-PPD in the environment

Zeying Yang,Boyong Cao,Xiaowei An,Zhongliang Yu,Wuduo Zhao,Fangcheng Su,Guoqing Guan,Yanhao Zhang,Zhengkun Xie,Baoxian Ye

The rapid and sensitive determination of antioxidant N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl- p -henylenediamine (6-PPD) in the environment is crucial for early intervention to prevent its adverse effects. Here, a reliable electrochemical sensor based on a N–C mediated γ-Mo 2 N nanocomposite (γ-Mo 2 N@N–C) modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) was developed and applied for selective and sensitive determination of 6-PPD. Benefiting from the superior stability and faster electron diffusion coefficient , the peak current responded to 6-PPD on the sensor linearly over a concentration range from 5 × 10 −8  mol L −1 to 1.0 × 10 −5  mol L −1 with a detection limit of 1.67 × 10 −8  mol L −1 (4.48 ng mL −1 ). Moreover, the sensor maintained good anti-interference ability in the determination of 6-PPD in soil samples from different regions in Zhengzhou City. Furthermore, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with kinetics analysis proved that the enhanced basicity of the γ-Mo 2 N@N–C facilitated the deprotonation of 6-PPD, with the preferred orientation facet of (200) in γ-Mo 2 N playing a vital role in inducing the dissociation of 6-PPD, thereby improving the sensor's response. Such an electrochemical sensor, with its good stability and superior sensitivity, has the potential to be applied for real-time evaluation and monitoring of environmental pollutants .

The “mediated molecular”-assisted construction of Mo2N islands dispersed on Co-based nanosheets for high-efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Kong Fanyi,Wu Aiping,Wang Siyu,Zhang Xinhui,Tian Chungui,Fu Honggang

The rational design of the catalysts with easily-accessible surface and high intrinsic activity is desirable for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we reported the construction of two-dimensional (2D) Co-Mo nitrides based heterojunctional catalyst for efficient HER based on a “mediated molecular” assisted route. The 2D Co(OH) 2 sheet reacted partially with the “mediated molecular” (2-methylimidazole (2-MIM)) to form zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-67 at surface, giving ZIF-67/Co(OH) 2 sheets. The ZIF-67 combines with [PMo 12 O 40 ] 3− cluster (PMo 12 ) due to the interaction of mediated molecular with PMo 12 , producing 2D Mo-Co-2MIM/Co(OH) 2 bimetallic precursor. After controlled nitriding, the Mo 2 N islands dispersed on 2D porous Co-based sheets were formed. A series of characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicated the formation of a close contact interface, which promotes the electron transfer between Mo and Co components, enhances the electron migration/redistribution and redistribution and down-shift of d-band center and thus gives a high intrinsic activity. The 2D characteristics make the catalyst more accessible contact sites, which is favourable to promot the HER. The tests showed that the optimized catalyst exhibits an onset potential of 0 mV and an overpotential of 10 mA·cm −2 at 35.0 mV, which is quite close to that of Pt/C catalyst. It also exhibits an activity superior to Pt/C at high current density (> 100 mA·cm −2 ). A good stability of the catalyst was achieved with no significant decay for 100 h of continuous operation. The electrolytic cell composed of optimized catalyst and P-NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) can be driven by low voltage (only 1.47 V) to reach a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 .

NiCo alloy nanoparticles anchored on mesoporous Mo2N nanosheets as efficient catalysts for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation and hydrogen generation

Ke Wang,Jia Wu,Shuyi Zheng,Shibin Yin

Construction of highly active and stable bifunctional catalysts for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is meaningful but remains a challenge. Herein, the NiCo–Mo 2 N heterostructure nanosheets catalyst with excellent HMFOR/HER performance is obtained by a simple hydrothermal and calcination method. The heterogeneous interface between NiCo and Mo 2 N induces electron redistribution, regulating the electronic structure of the catalyst and thus optimizing the adsorption/desorption behavior of HMFOR/HER intermediates. Consequently, NiCo–Mo 2 N/NF exhibits superior catalytic activity with a potential of 1.14 V RHE /−17 mV RHE (HMFOR/HER) at ±10 mA cm −2 , and the HMF conversion rate, FDCA yield, and Faradaic efficiency (FE) are ∼100%, 99.98%, and 98.65%, respectively. Besides, it only requires a low voltage of 1.36 V to achieve 100 mA cm −2 for HMFOR-assisted H 2 production. This study provides a strategy for the development of efficient bifunctional catalysts for sustainable production of high value-added products and hydrogen.
