Water flow-driven N-CQDS/MoS2 piezoelectric-photocatalytic percarbonate degradation of oxytetracycline: response surface modeling and mechanistic analysis

Li Sun,Yuhao Xing,Chenxu Liu,Zhe Wang,Yi Jiang,Tiehong Song

To overcome the limitations of high energy consumption and low selectivity in conventional antibiotic treatment methods, this study developed a sodium percarbonate (SPC)-activated piezoelectric-photocatalytic system using a nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dot/molybdenum disulfide (N-CQDs/MoS₂) composite to degrade oxytetracycline (OTC). The catalyst was synthesized via a hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), and electrochemical analysis. Results showed that nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots significantly enhanced the piezoelectric and photocatalytic performance of MoS₂. Reaction conditions were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM), determining the optimal parameters as OTC concentration of 10.68   mg/L, catalyst dosage of 0.46   g/L, and SPC dosage of 0.21   g/L. Under these conditions, a degradation efficiency of 99.52% was achieved within 25   minutes, closely matching the experimental result of 99.18%. The degradation kinetics followed a quasi-first-order model (k = 0.0752   min⁻¹), confirming the model’s reliability. Radical scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis identified h⁺, •OH, and O₂•⁻ as the main reactive species. Ecotoxicity assessment showed low toxicity of the degradation products, indicating good environmental safety. The catalyst maintained a high degradation efficiency of 96% after five cycles, demonstrating excellent stability and reusability.

Synthesis of Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots (N-CQDs) as a Fluorescent Probe for the Determination of Tartrazine

Nan Xu,Ting Pu,Lei Chen,Qin Yang,AnYuan Tong,FuBin Chen,ChunYan Yang

Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction for the determination of tartrazine in food. The microscopic structures and optical properties were examined by high resolution transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. The fluorescence emission of the N-CQDs were 450 nm upon the excitation of 350 nm with a quantum yield of 14%. The N-CQDs provide a good linear range from 0.8 to 100 μM and low detection limit of 0.078 μM. The constructed fluorescent probe was successfully adopted to determine tartrazine in food samples with good accuracy. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of tartrazine by the N-CQDs are likely due to the static quenching and inner filter effect. Overall, a wide linear range, sensitive and stable fluorescent probe is provided which indicates a new method for the determination of tartrazine.

Investigation of pressure response, adsorption performance, and detection capability of multifunctional P(AM-Gly-ChCl)/N-CQDs composite hydrogels

Yuzuo Liu,Jiawei Li,Bin Li,Zhigang Hu,Haoyu Lv,Ying Wang

In this work, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were successfully synthesized via a microwave-assisted route using citric acid and o-phenylenediamine as precursors. A deep eutectic solvent was subsequently constructed using choline chloride as the hydrogen bond acceptor and glycerol/acrylamide as hydrogen bond donors. The N-CQDs were introduced as functional nanofillers, and a P(AM-Gly-ChCl)/N-CQDs composite hydrogel was obtained through photopolymerization. The chemical composition and microstructure of the composite hydrogel were systematically characterized by SEM, XPS, and FTIR, verifying the effective incorporation of N-CQDs into the hydrogel network. The effect of N-CQDs content on the mechanical, sensing, and adsorption properties of the hydrogel was elucidated. With increasing N-CQDs content, both tensile fracture stress and tear energy were substantially improved. The composite hydrogel exhibited an enhanced pressure-sensitive response, with a relative capacitance change of 137.0% achieved at an applied load of 1 N for the hydrogel containing 0.3 wt% N-CQDs. In addition, incorporation of N-CQDs endowed the hydrogel with effective Fe3+ adsorption capability and pronounced fluorescence quenching behavior, highlighting its potential for multifunctional applications that integrate pressure sensing and metal-ion detection.

Hydrothermal synthesis of Mo,N-CQDs Co-modified BiVO4 for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under visible light

Cong Zhang,Huidong Xiong,Zhonghao Zhao,Xiaoyu Sun,Jingliang Cheng,Chaxiu Guo,Huadong Liu

In response to the need for efficient elimination of methylene blue (MB) from dye-containing wastewater, a Mo, N-co-doped carbon quantum dot-modified BiVO 4 (5% Mo, N-CQDs/BiVO 4 ) composite photocatalyst was developed. Pristine BiVO 4 suffers from rapid charge carrier recombination and limited visible-light utilization. Introduction of Mo, N-CQDs establishes a synergistic enhancement mechanism: (1) Mo, N-CQDs act as electron mediators, improving interfacial charge separation and migration, as evidenced by reduced charge transfer resistance. Mo doping introduces impurity energy levels that trap electrons and retard recombination, while nitrogen doping enhances electron tunneling and reduces interfacial resistance. (2) UV-Vis DRS confirms bandgap narrowing and enhanced visible-light absorption. (3) Photoelectrochemical analysis reveals significantly enhanced photocurrent response and reduced charge transfer resistance, confirming improved charge separation efficiency. Under visible light, the composite achieved a degradation rate constant of 0.04089 min −1 toward MB, a 3.31-fold enhancement over pure BiVO 4 , with >95% removal within 80 min. Radical trapping identified superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) and holes (h + ) as the predominant active species, with h + contributing ∼62% of the activity. The catalyst retained 88.65% of its initial efficiency after four cycles, demonstrating good stability. This study provides a viable charge-regulation strategy using multi-element co-doped carbon quantum dots for semiconductor modification, highlighting its potential in dye wastewater treatment.

UV photosensitized N-CQDs@In2O3 ordered porous film elaborated optical fiber acetone gas sensor with ppb-level at room temperature

Yan-nan Wang,Liyun Qin,Zhenyu Yuan,Jin Li,Fanli Meng

An optical fiber acetone gas sensor based on N-CQDs@In 2 O 3 porous ordered thin film is proposed. The probe adopts the hollow malposition structure (HMS) to excite the evanescent field on the surface of hollow-core fiber (HCF). N-CQDs@In 2 O 3 porous and ordered thin film was formed on the surface of optical fiber after calcining polystyrene (PS) microspheres at high temperature. The experimental results reveal the ultraviolet (UV) sensitization function for the proposed sensor at room temperature . The enhanced sensitivity is 7.1 pm/ppm, which is ∼5.9 times of the spiritual density of unsensitized sensor. In addition, the sensor has a limit of detection (LOD) of 500 ppb and excellent time response characteristics (response time 6.2 s and recovery time 7.1 s). The sensitization mechanism of N-CQDs to In 2 O 3 is explained by the results of the universal density function (DFT). The frontier electron orbital studies show that N-CQDs@In 2 O 3 has more abundant electron clouds. The good moisture resistance enables its stable performance in humid environment. UV sensitization is an effective way to improve the sensitivity of optical fiber gas sensor, which is of great significance for detecting the acetone gas with ultra-low concentration.

Simultaneous pollutant degradation and electricity generation by photocatalytic fuel cell with visible light responsive N-CQDs/Bi2MoO6/CuMn2O4/Ti photoanode

Jitai Li,Yunlan Xu,Dengjie Zhong

In this work, an efficient nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CQDs) doped Bi 2 MoO 6 /CuMn 2 O 4 heterojunction photoanode (N-CQDs/Bi 2 MoO 6 /CuMn 2 O 4 ) was successfully prepared via a facile hydrothermal-coupling strategy, and it was integrated with a Cu cathode to build a PFC for concurrent electricity generation and organic pollutant degradation. Approximately 92% of RhB was eliminated, accompanied by photocurrent and power output values of 8.3 mA·cm −2 and 51.0 μW·cm −2 , respectively. In addition, the open-circuit voltage and photoconversion efficiency were measured as 0.60 V and 0.12%. The superior performance of PFC originates from the integrated action of carrier separation of Bi 2 MoO 6 /CuMn 2 O 4 Z-scheme heterojunction and electron-storage function of N-CQDs, which reinforces visible-light harvesting, suppressed charge recombination, accelerates the interfacial electron transfer and sustains strong redox potentials. The degradation process involved the participation of both radical species (•OH, •O 2 ⁻ ) and non-radical species (h + ). Due to the formation of local Schottky-like contact between Bi 2 MoO 6 /CuMn 2 O 4 and N-CQDs, N-CQDs act as an efficient electron mediator, which facilitates the generation of reactive oxygen species and further enhances the degradation efficiency. This work provides a new insight into constructing quantum-dot-mediated heterojunction photoanode.

Nitrogen-rich carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) based on natural deep eutectic solvents: Simultaneous detection and treatment of trace Co2+ under saline conditions

Hongwei Ren,Meiyu Li,Yize Liu,Tengda Zhao,Ruoyao Zhang,Erhong Duan

Trace Co 2+ , when present in large quantities, is harmful to the environment and therefore cannot be ignored. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a standard method used to detect metal ions , however, detecting trace Co 2+ under high saline conditions can be challenging. Similarly, existing Co 2+ treatment methods are prone to secondary pollution and have high energy consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to find an efficient and non-polluting method for Co 2+ detection and treatment. This study successfully synthesized nitrogen-rich carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) based on natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) using a one-step solvothermal method. The prepared N-CQDs exhibited excellent fluorescence and high salt tolerance. The simultaneous detection and treatment of trace Co 2+ in water under high salinity conditions were achieved for the first time. The response of the N-CQDs to Co 2+ under saline condition was linear in the range of 5–250 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.2269 μM. Feasibility of practical application was assessed by quantitative detection of Co 2+ in real water samples. Furthermore, the N-CQDs can treat Co 2+ , and the removal rate was 99.98%.

Photocatalytic fuel cell with N-CQDs electron warehouses mediated ZnIn2S4/tubular g-C3N4/Ti 2D/0D/2D photoanode for efficient organic pollutant degradation and electricity generation

Zhuofan Han,Dengjie Zhong,Yunlan Xu,Haixing Chang,Lin Dong,Yi Liu

In this study, N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs)/ZnIn 2 S 4 /tubular g-C 3 N 4 (TCN)/Ti photoanode was successfully prepared by a simple one-pot solvothermal method and silica sol drop coating method, which was assembled with Cu x O/Cu cathode to construct photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) to degrade organic pollutants and generate electricity. The photoanode material aims to promote the separation and uniform transfer of photogenerated electron through the synergistic effect of Schottky junction and S-type heterojunction of 0D quantum dots. The PFC with N-CQDs-doped photoanode possessed strong power generation capacity (71.10·μW-cm −2 ) and high photoelectric conversion efficiency (0.098 %), which were 1.72 and 1.94 times that of the PFC with ZnIn 2 S 4 /tubular g-C 3 N 4 /Ti photoanode. It degraded more than 95 % of rhodamine B, 83.44 % of tetracycline and 50.66 % of bisphenol A within 30 min. The excellent performance of the developed PFC is attributed to the synergistic effect of different heterojunction in photoanode, and the improvement of absorption and utilization of visible light by doping N-CQDs. Both free radicals (•OH, •O 2 − ) and non-free radicals (h + , 1 O 2 ) were involved in the degradation process of pollutants. It is noteworthy that, due to the Schottky junction, the N-CQDs could act as electron warehouses to promote the production of H 2 O 2 , which could enhance the degradation effect. We believe that this research provides a new direction for the development and research work on efficient photoanodes. Synopsis N-CQDs was introduced into PFC photoanode to construct the synergistic effect of Schottky junction and S heterojunction to simultaneously realize efficient pollutants degradation and power generation.

Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots for Preventing Biofilm Formation and Eradicating Drug-Resistant Bacteria Infection

Huajuan Wang,Zhiyong Song,Jiangjiang Gu,Shuojun Li,Yang Wu,Heyou Han

The development of novel antimicrobial agents is a top priority in the fight against drug-resistant bacteria. Here, we synthesized a green nanoantibiotic, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) from bis-quaternary ammonium salt (BQAS) as carbon and nitrogen sources. The as-obtained N-CQDs possess high antibacterial activity (>99%) against both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Ampicillin-resistant Escherichia coli bacteria in vitro than some known clinical antibiotics (vancomycin and gentamicin). The N-CQDs can kill MRSA pathogens without inducing resistance, prevent biofilm formation and eliminate established biofilm and persister cells. The treatment of N-CQDs can significantly reduce the amount of bacteria on the infected tissue and accelerate wound healing. The N-CQDs are positively charged, thus enabling them to interact with bacterial cell membrane through electrostatic interaction, leading to severe damage and an increased permeability of the cell membrane, which further promotes the penetration of N-CQDs into the membrane and induces the degradation of DNA by N-CQDs generated reactive oxygen species. The N-CQDs also play a role in obstructing the intracellular metabolic pathways of MRSA. The overall data demonstrate the green nanoantibiotic as an excellent eradicator of biofilm and persister cells as well as a promising antibacterial candidate for treating infections induced by drug-resistant bacteria.

An “On–Off–On” Fluorescence Sensing System Based on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots (N-CQDs) and Ferric Ions (Fe3+) for the Determination of Captopril (CAP) in Real Samples

Ye Shenyi,Cai Jingrui,Ding Ruyu,Zhu Hang,Xiao Jiecheng,Liu Tianhui,Zhao Chengfei

In this study, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) are synthesized from citric acid and tetraethylenepentamine via a one-step melting method. Leveraging the fluorescence quenching of N-CQDs by Fe 3+ through a combined static quenching and inner filter effect mechanism, an “on–off–on” fluorescent sensing platform was constructed for the detection of captopril (CAP). The method relies on the competitive chelation of Fe 3+ by the thiol and carboxyl groups of CAP, which displaces the metal ions from the N-CQD surface and restores the quenched fluorescence. Under optimized conditions, the sensor exhibited a detection limit of 0.0620 mmol/L and a linear response spanning 0.1–1 mmol/L. The method was successfully applied to the determination of CAP in commercial tablet formulations, with recoveries meeting the acceptance criteria of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020 Edition). The proposed approach offers a simple, rapid, and sensitive strategy for the quantitative analysis of CAP in pharmaceutical products.

Novel Paper-Based Fluorescent Sensor Based on N-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots (N-CQDs) and Cotton Fiber Paper (CFP) with High Selectivity and Sensitivity for the Visual Determination of Mercury (II) in Environmental Waters

Shunwei Wu,Yongzheng Yin,Chunyan Sun,Chenghai Ma

A highly selective solid-state fluorescent sensor based on N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) and cotton fiber paper (CFP) is reported for the determination of trace mercury (II)(Hg2+). The N-doped carbon quantum dots on cotton fiber paper (N-CQDs@CFP) was synthesized using a facile one-step microwave hydrothermal method. Multiple approaches were employed to fully investigate the morphology and chemical structure of the paper-based fluorescent sensor. The N-CQDs were chemically bonded onto the CFP, which offers good reproducibility and stability of the sensor. The N-CQDs@CFP showed high-intensity blue emission in dark-field imaging, and the fluorescence was quenched by Hg2+. The Hg2+ in aqueous samples was easily determined and visually monitored. There was good linearity from 0 to 250 μM, and the limit of detection was 34 nM. The paper-based fluorescent sensor provided accurate and rapid determination of Hg2+ upon comparison with flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS). The simple preparation, rapid detection (< 5 min), low cost, and easy-handling illustrate that the reported sensor has a significant value in environmental monitoring.
