The overcharge issue still occupies a high safety risk for NCM cathode materials with less stable structure. In this work, an original overcharge protection electrolyte additive named as 3-fluoroanisol (3FA) is recommended for NCM 622. The anti-overcharge effect of 3FA was verified in detail by cycle voltammetry, constant-current overcharge and discharge, AC impendence and scanning electron microscopy measurement. The electrolyte conductivity and long-term cycle performance tests were conducted to evaluate the impact of 3FA on the cell system operated in conventional voltage range. The 3FA is electro-polymerized at about 4.4 V and the time from upper cut-off voltage to overcharge state is extended from 5.46 h to 11.82 h in CR2032 cell, no adverse effects are shown during normal use at the same time under the additive amount of no more than 5 wt.%. Moreover, C80 micro-calorimeter test shows that 3FA increases thermal stability of electrolyte and NCM 622 cathode system. The heat production during overcharge was measured further. With the increase of the amount of 3FA added, the heat production during overcharge increases and the peak heat release rate occurs near 4.4 V, which further proves the effect of overcharge protection of 3FA. Thus, 3FA enhances overcharge endurance and thermal stability of lithium-ion battery with NCM 622 cathode.

To optimize the electrochemical behavior of NCM-based high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in wide temperature ranges, Phenyl trifluoromethane sulfonate (PTM) is demonstrated as the novel electrolyte additive to enhance the electrochemical behavior of LiNi 0·6 Co 0·2 Mn 0·2 O 2 /graphite cells at 25 °C, −20 °C and 45 °C. The cells with 1.0 wt% PTM-containing electrolyte deliver 80.6% capacity retention after 350 cycles at 25 °C, 73.4% after 100 cycles at −20 °C, and 82.6% after 300 cycles at 45 °C, which are significantly higher than that in standard electrolyte (STD), corresponding to 36.4% at 25 °C, 40.3% at −20 °C, and failure at 45 °C, respectively. According to density functional theory (DFT) simulations and quantitative calculations, the PTM preferentially reduces on the anode and oxidizes on the cathode to participate in the formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) films. In addition, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and other analysis suggest that the formed SEI films are thinner and more stable for the electrolyte containing PTM, and the formed SEI films effectively control the decomposition of carbonate-based electrolytes and greatly decrease the increased resistance during the cycle.

As a protic impurity, water can severely degrade battery life and pose safety risks. Lowering the H2O content in the electrolyte is essential, but it often requires energy-intensive drying technologies. Here, we develop a multifunctional interlayer utilizing dehydrated sepiolite on a commercial polypropylene separator (Sep@PP) to address water-induced challenges in lithium batteries. Its open channel and rich active sites (Si–O–Si, Mg–OH2, and Mg–OH groups) make it effectively absorb harmful impurities (e.g., H2O, HF, and transition metal ions), thereby preventing electrolyte decomposition, stabilizing the electrode interface, and further enhancing cycling stability. Moreover, the inherent thermal stability of dehydrated sepiolite endows the separator with exceptional heat resistance, mitigating thermal runaway risks and significantly enhancing overall battery safety. As a result, the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO)//Li cell assembled with the Sep@PP separator exhibits excellent cycling stability, retaining 84.1% of its capacity over 500 cycles. Even when cycled in an electrolyte containing ultrahigh water content (1200 ppm), the LNMO//Li cell still maintains 81.7% of its capacity over 500 cycles, demonstrating its strong tolerance to moisture. Furthermore, the LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NCM622)//Li cell paired with the Sep@PP separator shows superior stability and maintains 72.3% of the initial capacity after 200 cycles, even at 55 °C. These findings underscore that leveraging the unique structure of dehydrated sepiolite presents a novel approach to mitigating water hazards in the modern battery industry.

Tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphite (TMSPi) has been reported to be an excellent electrolyte additive. However, scarce reports exist on the effect of the charge cutoff potential on the cyclic stability using high-performance LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 (NCM622)–mesocarbon microbead (MCMB) full cells. Herein, a high-loading and repeatable NCM622–MCMB coin-type full cell is successfully prepared, and the role of TMSPi on such a full cell at charge cutoff potentials of 4.25 and 4.45 V is studied. Theoretical calculations and detailed analyses reveal that it is oxidized in the first charging process due to its unsaturated P—O bonds, thus forming a stable P—O—F-rich cathode electrolyte interphase and preventing severe decomposition of the electrolyte over NCM622 during long-term cycling. In addition, the P—O and Si—O bonds of TMSPi both display HF-scavenging ability. Moreover, TMSPi may react directly with the LiPF 6 -based electrolyte to form some intermediate products that can be reduced on the MCMB electrode, thereby modifying the solid electrolyte interphase and improving the stability of MCMB during lithium intercalation.

The inadequate room-temperature ionic conductivity and unstable electrode-electrolyte interfaces have encumbered the widespread adoption of high-voltage solid-state Li metal batteries (SSLMBs). Here, we report a molecularly engineered polymer electrolyte synthesized by grafting poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) onto a tri(2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate triacrylate (THEICTA) framework, coupled with interface engineering strategies. The hierarchical coordination competition within the polymer matrix facilitates rapid Li⁺ transport, achieving an ionic conductivity of 0.95 mS cm⁻¹ at room temperature. Advanced characterization techniques including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) reveal the formation of a robust, nitrided and boronized cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) on LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 (NCM622), effectively suppressing oxidative decomposition and mitigating structural degradation at high voltages (≥4.5 V). As a result, the Li||NCM622 cell delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 188.6 mAh g⁻¹ with 70.4 % capacity retention after 700 cycles. Furthermore, a Li metal pouch cell featuring an energy density of 456 Wh kg⁻¹ demonstrates excellent cycling stability, maintaining a capacity retention rate of 87.8 % after 130 cycles. This study provides a scalable molecular design strategy for polymer electrolytes, advancing the development of high-voltage SSLMBs for next-generation energy storage.

The development of solid-state electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and wide electrochemical window is crucial for the advancement of lithium batteries. In this work, we introduce a polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based electrolyte hybridized with the polyacrylonitrile coated lithiated palygorskite fibers (Li-Pal@PAN) to enhance ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability. First, the Li-Pal@PAN serves as a one-dimensional lithium-ion conduction pathway in the solid-state electrolyte with a low interfacial energy barrier for Li + transfer. Then, it facilitates the formation of a composite solid electrolyte interface (SEI) that contains Li 3 N, effectively mitigating side reactions between the lithium metal anode and the electrolyte. As a result, the Li-Pal@PAN enhances the oxidative stability of the PEO-based electrolyte, increasing its oxidation potential to 4.9 V. Electrochemical characterization further demonstrates that a Li||Li symmetric cell using the PEO/Li-Pal@PAN composite exhibits stable cycling performance over 1000 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm −2 . Moreover, all-solid-state lithium metal batteries utilizing a high-voltage ternary cathode (LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 , NCM622) deliver a high-rate capacity of 117 mAh g −1 at 0.3C. These results underscore the significant potential of PEO/Li-Pal@PAN composites in improving the performance, stability, and longevity of all-solid-state Li metal batteries, offering a promising pathway for their application in advanced energy storage system.
