Solid-state sodium metal batteries have attracted much attention due to the high energy density and safety. However, the poor physical contact and morphology instability at the anode interface decrease the dendrite tolerance of Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 at high current density . Herein, NaF/NaZn 13 multi-functional artificial layer is prepared by in-situ thermal decomposition and alloying reaction. The anode interface resistance is significantly decreased from 1258.5 to 41.5 Ω cm 2 due to the improved sodiophilic property. Moreover, the NaF/NaZn 13 interphase can promote the Na + diffusion and suppress the electron leakage at the interface, enabling a high critical current density of 2.4 mA cm −2 and a stable Na stripping/plating at 0.5 mA cm −2 for 500 h and 0.7 mA cm −2 for 200 h. The Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /Na all-solid-state battery shows excellent rate and cycling performance. This work proves the feasibility of fluorinated multifunctional interphase in realizing high current and dendrite tolerant solid-state electrolytes.

Solid-state sodium batteries represent a highly promising option for future electrochemical energy storage applications. The ionic conductivity of solid-state electrolytes is one of the significant factors limiting the development of solid-state batteries. In this study, we establish that Sm3+ doping effectively boosts the ionic conductivity of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP). The optimal composition, Na3.2Zr1.8Sm0.2Si2–PO12 (NZSP-S20), exhibits a total conductivity of 1.87 mS cm–1 at 23 °C. Structural and microscopic morphology analyses reveal that Sm3+ doping enhances the ionic conductivity of NZSP through structural modulation, phase fraction adjustment, and grain size reduction. High-frequency impedance spectroscopy (40 Hz to 110 MHz) demonstrates that bulk and grain boundaries contribute 49.4 and 50.6%, respectively, to the total conductivity. The structural and microscopic morphology analyses reveal that Sm3+ doping enhances the ionic conductivity of NZSP. Furthermore, the critical current density (CCD) attained in the symmetric cell, assembled by using NZSP-S20 as the solid-state electrolyte and NaSn alloy as the electrode, reaches 2.2 mA cm–1. These results furnish a theoretical foundation for comprehending the modification of solid-state electrolytes.

In this study, four sodium superionic conductors Na 3 Zr 2-x Zn x Si 2 PO 12 (x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) were used as solid electrolytes for planar mixed-potential gas sensors (Zn0, Zn1, Zn2, and Zn3 sensors) to detect hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) and sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ). The total conductivity of the Na 3 Zr 2-x Zn x Si 2 PO 12 electrolyte first increased and then decreased with increasing Zn 2+ doping. When doped with 0.2 mol of Zn 2+ , the electrolyte exhibited the highest total conductivity of 6.37 × 10 -5 S·cm -1 at 25°C, which was 14.2 times higher than that of the undoped electrolyte. At 25°C, the response of the Zn2 sensor to 10 ppm H 2 S was -237.8 mV, which was 6.9, 2.1, and 5.8 times that of the Zn0, Zn1, and Zn3 sensors, respectively. A high response of -58.6 mV was obtained by the Zn2 sensor at 25°C for 0.5 ppm H 2 S. In addition, the sensitivity to H 2 S at 25°C was -150.9 mV/decade. In comparison with reported mixed-potential H 2 S sensors, the Zn2 sensor demonstrated significantly higher response and sensitivity at room temperature. Moreover, the Zn2 sensor responded to 10 ppm SO 2 and H 2 S almost equally at 25°C. The gas sensing behavior was discussed in terms of the variation of sodium ionic conductivity, Na 3 PO 4 phase proportion, and ZnS formation under H 2 S or SO 2 atmosphere. Additionally, taking the detection of H 2 S-contaminated environments as an example, a gas leakage detection and alarm platform based on the Zn2 sensor was designed. This study provides insights into designing and developing high-performance mixed-potential gas sensors for H 2 S and SO 2 at room temperature.

Solid-state sodium batteries (SSSBs) display great potential in scale energy storage for their safety, cost and sustainability. However, it is a great challenge to achieve high ionic conductivity and temperature adaptability for most sodium-ion solid electrolytes. Here, we first demonstrate that Sc 3+ -doped Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 (NASICON) is a promising electrolyte for a wide temperature range utilizing in SSSBs from 0 to 80 °C. Optimal Na 3.4 Zr 1.6 Sc 0.4 Si 2 PO 12 shows a superior Na-ion conductivity, up to 1.77 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at room temperature, and excellent Na metal compatibility, as confirmed by a symmetrical cell test. Furthermore, the solid-state sodium battery with the configuration of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /Na 3.4 Zr 1.6 Sc 0.4 Si 2 PO 12 /Na maintains a discharge capacity of 98.7 mAh g −1 at 1C after 300 cycles at room temperature. Even at 0 °C, the battery still displays a reversible capacity of 99.2 mAh g −1 at 0.1C after 100 cycles. Through the structure analysis and ex-situ and in-situ electrochemical characterizations, the reasons that dominate the excellent performance of the assembled all-solid-state sodium battery with NASICON electrolytes are initially revealed.

Polydopamine (PDA) coating promotes uniform dispersion of Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 in polymer matrix. • Polar groups of PDA enhance NaClO 4 dissociation via Lewis acid-base interactions. • PDA - modified Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 creates continuous Na + transport pathways. • PDA preferentially reduces to form a NaN-rich SEI suppressing dendrites. • The optimized solid-state electrolyte promises stable quasi-solid-state Na metal batteries. Composite solid-state electrolytes (CSSEs) are a promising candidate for quasi-solid-state sodium metal batteries (QSSSMBs) by combining the advantages of ceramic electrolytes and solid polymer electrolytes. However, poor interfacial compatibility between ceramic and polymer components greatly limits their full potential. Herein, we design and fabricate a CSSE by solution-casting a suspension containing polydopamine (PDA)-modified Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 (NZSP), denoted as PDA@NZSP, poly(vinylidene fluoride- co -hexafluoropropylene) and NaClO 4 . The PDA coating acts as an amphiphilic interfacial bridge improving the interfacial compatibility between inorganic filler and polymer matrix, which promotes a more homogeneous distribution of PDA@NZSP and facilitates interfacial Na + transport. The polar groups of PDA reconstruct the local Na + ClO 4 − coordination environment, suppress salt crystallization, and favor the formation of more weakly associated Na + species, contributing to a room-temperature ionic conductivity of 0.233 mS cm −1 and a Na + transference number of 0.73. Depth-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of cycled Na anodes further reveals that PDA@NZSP modification is associated with a distinct distribution of N O-containing and fluorinated interphase species compared with pristine NZSP. Together with the favorable interfacial-resistance evolution and long-term Na plating/stripping behavior, these results demonstrate improved Na/electrolyte interfacial stability in the optimized CSSE-based quasi-solid-state configuration. Polydopamine-modified ceramic filler interfacial engineering enables efficient Na + transport and stable Na metal anodes for high-performance quasi-solid-state sodium metal batteries. Solid-state sodium batteries offer new opportunities for emerging applications with sensitivity to safety and cost. However, the prevailing composite electrolyte structure, as a core component, is still poorly conductive to Na ions. Herein, a 3D architecture design of Na + conductive Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 framework is introduced to in situ compound with polymer electrolyte, subtly inducing an anion-enriched interface that acts as rapid ion immigration channel. Multiple continuous and fast Na + transport pathways are built via the amorphization of polymer matrix, the consecutive skeleton, and the induced anion-adsorbed interface, resulting in a high ionic conductivity of 4.43 × 10 −4 S·cm −1 . Notably, the design of 3D skeleton not only enables the content of inorganic part exceeds 60 wt% without any sign of agglomeration, but also endows the composite electrolyte reach a high transference number of 0.61 by immobilizing the anions. The assembled quasi-solid-state cells exhibit high practical safety and can stably work for over 1500 cycles with 83.1% capacity retention. This tactic affords new insights in designing Na + conductive composite electrolytes suffering from slow ion immigration for quasi-solid-state sodium batteries. Graphical abstract

Sodium composite solid-state electrolytes, composed of polymer matrices and oxide electrolyte fillers, have garnered considerable attention, due to a balance of ionic conductivity, flexibility, mechanical stability and electrochemical stability. However, the huge disparity in surface energy between inorganic and organic components induces a severe aggregation of the oxide filler within the polymer matrix. In this research, an amphiphilic polydopamine (PDA) compatibility layer was strategically applied to Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) to mitigate the wettability differential between NZSP and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), which effectively mitigates the aggregation of NZSP within PEO, meliorates the dispersion of inorganic fillers, and constructs a uniform composite solid-state electrolyte membrane PCSE. Consequently, a composite electrolyte based on PDA@NZSP manifested enhanced electrochemical performance and cycling stability. The all-solid-state battery, assembled with PCSE, exhibited 1350 stable cycles at 60 °C with a low polarization overpotential and a high capacity retention (80.5%). Finite element simulation indicated a homogeneous Na+ flux density distribution at the electrode–electrolyte interface under an applied electric field, elucidating the pivotal role of the PDA amphiphilic interface in the construction of uniform composite solid-state electrolytes. This work provides a feasible solution for the construction of long-life all-solid-state sodium metal batteries.

Graphical Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 nanotubes prepared by a hydrothermal method are used as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), showing a reversible discharge capacity of 126.2 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 and an excellent cycling performance. Solid-state SIBs containing these nanotube anodes and an Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 solid electrolyte show a performance that is comparable to that of batteries containing a liquid electrolyte. Moreover, the prepared solid-state SIBs can store mechanical energy harvested by triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 (NTO) is a potential anode material with low discharge voltage for room-temperature sodium-ion batteries. In this work, NTO nanotubes were prepared by a hydrothermal method. XRD, SEM, TEM, and HRTEM studies are performed to investigate the composition, morphology, and structure. As anodes for sodium-ion batteries, NTO nanotubes show a reversible capacity of 126.2 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 . The discharge capacity can still reach 109 mAh g −1 even for 2000 cycles. Solid-state sodium-ion batteries containing NTO-nanotube anodes and an Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 solid electrolyte display a comparable performance to batteries with a liquid electrolyte. Moreover, the prepared solid-state sodium battery is also demonstrated to store mechanical energy harvested by triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). The discharge capacity reaches 121 mAh g −1 at 5 mA g −1 .
