Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) is a minimally invasive interventional procedure performed under X-ray guidance. It involves catheter-based delivery of embolic agents (EAs) into pathological or injured blood vessels to block the blood supply, thereby achieving rapid hemostasis. Meanwhile, this technique induces ischemic necrosis of tumor cells by depriving them of nutrients and oxygen through targeted vascular occlusion. Owing to its advantages of minimal invasiveness, precise targeting, and repeatability, TAE has been widely adopted in clinical practice. However, its therapeutic efficacy is mainly constrained by two limitations: insufficient imaging stability caused by the rapid dispersion of radiopaque agents in the blood vessels, as well as the chemotherapy resistance induced by lactic acid accumulation in the tumor microenvironment due to embolization. In this study, we developed a novel bifunctional gelatin-based embolic microsphere that can simultaneously meet the requirements of promoting the drug uptake by tumor tissues and stable X-ray imaging through encapsulating sodium bicarbonate nanoparticles and barium sulfate (BaSO 4 ) contrast agents into the gelatin embolic microsphere. We further systematically evaluated its physicochemical and biocompatibility properties. This study provides a novel strategy for developing EAs with integrated radiopacity stability and improved drug uptake, holding potential for advancing precision in interventional therapies. Graphical We developed a novel bifunctional gelatin-based embolic microsphere that can simultaneously meet the requirements of promoting the drug uptake by tumor tissues and stable X-ray imaging by encapsulating sodium bicarbonate nanoparticles and barium sulfate contrast agents within the gelatin embolic microsphere.

A series of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with NaHCO 3 as hydrogen bond acceptor and glycerol (GL) or ethylene glycol (EG) as hydrogen bond donor are prepared and used as catalyst for the synthesis of glycerol carbonate (GC) from the transesterification of GL and propylene carbonate (PC). FT-IR, NMR, TGA and DSC are used for the characterization of the physicochemical properties of prepared DESs. The effects of reaction temperature, PC to GL molar ratio, catalyst amount, and reaction time on the GL conversion and GC yield are investigated in detail. The results show that NaHCO 3 :GL (1:5) DES possesses the highest catalytic activity, which is attributed to the hydrogen bond network structure between NaHCO 3 and GL as well as the interaction between NaHCO 3 :GL DES and reactants GL or PC. Under 135 °C, PC/GL molar ratio of 2:1, catalyst amount of 5 wt% (based on the GL weight), and reaction time of 4 h, the GL conversion of 99.99% and GC yield of 99.54% are obtained. NaHCO 3 :GL (1,5) DES can be reused five times with no obvious decline in activity. Based on the experimental results and FT-IR analysis, the reaction mechanism of transesterification of GL and PC using NaHCO 3 :GL (1,5) as catalyst is proposed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about the application of DES catalyst for the reaction of GL and PC.

Adsorptive desulfurization is an effective technology for removing harmful sulfur under mild conditions. Carbon materials have many advantages and are often used in adsorption desulfurization research, but until now have been synthesized using complicated methods and have shown limited adsorption capacity. Using an NaHCO3-assisted leavening method, waste tires were in the current work used as raw materials to produce hierarchically porous carbon that exhibits a high specific surface area and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. In contrast to the sulfur removal by the carbon material prepared using a commonly used method, the as-prepared carbon material shows excellent adsorption performance, and was able to achieve an ultra-deep desulfurization of pentanethiol, specifically removing up to 99.7% of the sulfur from a model fuel with an initial sulfur concentration of 28 ppm. Therefore, we have provided a simple method for synthesizing adsorbents with high adsorption performance, and we expect these adsorbents to be used for industrial adsorptive desulfurization.

Food industry wastewater containing synthetic dyes threatens ecological safety and human health. Therefore, efficient and environmentally friendly adsorbents that can remove synthetic food dyes from wastewater are urgently needed. In this work, a self-nitrogen-doped biochar (GSNBC), used for adsorption of food dyes including carmine and tartrazine, was facilely prepared by employing ginger straw waste as the carbon precursor and NaHCO3as a mild and relatively benign pore-forming agent via one-step pyrolysis. The as-prepared GSNBC featured well-developed porous structures, a specific surface area of 1712.52 m2g−1, and rich oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional surface groups. Particularly, GSNBC performed ultrafast adsorption, with approximately 90% of the equilibrium capacity within 1 min (600.13 mg g−1and 580.24 mg g−1for carmine and tartrazine, respectively), and reached adsorption equilibrium at about 10 min. In addition, it exhibited excellent regenerability. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms fit well with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. DFT calculations indicated that π–π stacking and hydrogen bonding were mainly responsible for the adsorption. This study presents not only a promising and efficient adsorbent for the remediation of dye-laden food industry wastewater but also a sustainable route for the resource utilization of ginger straw waste.

Background Urolithiasis is one of the most common urological diseases, and its incidence has increased globally in recent years. Multiple potential mechanisms are involved in urolithiasis, including renal oxidative stress, inflammatory response, fibrosis, pyroptosis, and gut microbiota disturbance. Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) is commonly used clinically to alkalize urine and slow the progression of chronic kidney disease, including urolithiasis. However, the specific mechanism of NaHCO3 in the treatment of urolithiasis is unclear. Methods In this study, we constructed a mice urolithiasis model via intraperitoneal injection of glyoxylate (50 mg/kg) for one week in C57BL/6 mice. Meanwhile, 5% NaHCO3 was added to drinking water in the treatment group. Biochemical detection, immunohistochemical staining, RT-qPCR, and Western blotting were used to assess kidney function and levels of inflammation and pyroptosis. The alteration of gut microbiota in mice treated with NaHCO3 was measured using 16S rDNA sequencing. Results The results demonstrated that NaHCO3 effectively reduced the deposition of CaOx crystal, as well as restored kidney function in urolithiasis-induced kidney injury mice. Moreover, NaHCO3 alleviated oxidative stress and inflammatory response and ameliorated pyroptosis by modulating the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway in kidney. Additionally, it enhanced the intestinal barrier function by up-regulating the expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1, occludin, and claudin 5), remodeling the gut microbiota, and reducing intestinal inflammation. Conclusion In summary, NaHCO3 exerted a protective effect via the gut-kidney axis in the urolithiasis mice model, suggesting its potential use as a dietary supplementation to be added to daily drinking water for the management of urolithiasis.

Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZIHSCs) represents a promising technological approach for large-scale energy storage with the combined advantages of supercapacitors and zinc-ion batteries. Unfortunately, it is still challengeable to quickly fabricate low-cost, high-performance carbonaceous cathode materials at relatively low temperature. To address such issues, herein, taking waste Eucommia ulmoides Oliver (EUO) wood as an example, we present a novel microwave-assisted carbonization (MWC) approach at relatively low temperature to quickly prepare active carbon, and we present a synergistic strategy to significantly enhance the electrochemical performance by introducing sodium bicarbonate activation (SA) and constructing conductive carbon nanotubes (CNT) networks. The MWC-SA@CNT hybrid exhibits outstanding specific capacitance of 344.2 F/g at 0.2 A/g within three-electrode system, much better than conventional high-temperature pyrolyzed AC, MWC carbon, and MWC-SA carbon. The superior performance of MWC-SA@CNT can be attributed to the synergistic effect of its large specific surface area of 1102.7 m 2 /g, high mesoporous percentage of 53.5%, and rich –OH and C O groups due to microwave-assisted carbonization and sodium bicarbonate activation, and rich electron transport paths due to the presence of CNT networks. Furthermore, ZIHSCs assembled by MWC-SA@CNT cathode could delivers impressive performance with excellent capacity (194.37 mA h/g at current density of 1 A/g), energy density (142.30 Wh/kg), and durability (capacitance retention rate of 97.65% after 5000 cycles). This work offers a rapid and low-temperature method for preparing wood-based active carbon with rich nanopores and strong conductivity to improve performance of Zinc ion storage.

The development and utilization of saline-alkaline water, an important backup resource, has received widespread attention. However, the underuse of saline-alkaline water, threatened by the single species of saline-alkaline aquaculture, seriously affects the development of the fishery economy. In this work, a 30-day NaHCO 3 stress experimental study combined with analyses of untargeted metabolomics, transcriptome, and biochemical approaches was conducted on crucian carp to provide a better understanding of the saline-alkaline stress response mechanism in freshwater fish. This work revealed the relationships among the biochemical parameters, endogenous differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs), and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the crucian carp livers. The biochemical analysis showed that NaHCO 3 exposure changed the levels of several physiological parameters associated with the liver, including antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GSH-Px), MDA, AKP, and CPS. According to the metabolomics study, 90 DEMs are involved in various metabolic pathways such as ketone synthesis and degradation metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, arachidonic acid metabolism, and linoleic acid metabolism. In addition, transcriptomics data analysis showed that a total of 301 DEGs were screened between the control group and the high NaHCO 3 concentration group, of which 129 up-regulated genes and 172 down-regulated genes. Overall, NaHCO 3 exposure could cause lipid metabolism disorders and induce energy metabolism imbalance in the crucian carp liver. Simultaneously, crucian carp might regulate its saline-alkaline resistance mechanism by enhancing the synthesis of glycerophospholipid metabolism, ketone bodies, and degradation metabolism, at the same time increasing the vitality of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GSH-Px) and nonspecific immune enzyme (AKP). Herein, all results will provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the stress responses and tolerance to saline-alkaline exposure in crucian carp.

Background : Owing to the progressive rise in saline waters globally, resulting in detrimental impacts on freshwater aquaculture, the underlying molecular distinctions governing the response to alkaline stress between diploid and triploid crucian carp remain unknown. Methods : This investigation explores the effects of 20 and 60 mmol NaHCO 3 stress over 30 days on the gills of diploid and triploid crucian carp, employing histological, biochemical, and multi-omic analyses. Results : Findings reveal structural damage to gill lamellas in the examined tissue. Diploid crucian carp exhibit heightened activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and alkaline phosphatase (AKP), alongside lower malondialdehyde (MDA) and urea nitrogen (BUN) levels compared to triploid counterparts. Metabolomic investigations suggest alterations in purine metabolism, lipid metabolism, sphingolipid metabolism, and aminoglycan and nucleotide sugar metabolism following NaHCO 3 exposure. Transcriptomic data indicate differential expression of genes associated with nitrogen metabolism, complement and coagulation cascades, IL-17 signaling pathways, and Toll-like receptor signaling pathways. Conclusions : Overall, NaHCO 3 -induced stress leads to significant gill tissue damage, accompanied by reactive oxygen species (ROS) production causing oxidative stress and disruptions in lipid metabolism in crucian carp. Furthermore, an inflammatory response in gill cells triggers an immune response. Diploid crucian carp exhibit superior antioxidant and immune capacities compared to triploid counterparts, while also displaying reduced inflammatory responses in vivo. Notably, diploid carp efficiently excrete excess BUN through purine metabolism, mitigating protein metabolism and amino acid imbalances caused by BUN accumulation. This enables them to allocate less energy for coping with external environmental stress, redirecting surplus energy toward growth and development. The above results indicate that diploid organisms can better adapt to saline–alkaline environments. Overall, this study provides novel perspectives into species selection of crucian carp of different ploidy in saline–alkaline waters.

Typical organic pollutants from coal-combustion flue gas such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) need to be effectively controlled. This work synthesized a series of nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbons (NHPCs) by one-step activation with various proportions of cellulose, (NH 4 ) 2 C 2 O 4 and KHCO 3 /NaHCO 3 . The NHPCs have a high specific surface area and pore volume up to 2816 m 2 /g and 1.413 cm 3 /g as well as a hierarchical porous structure with micro-meso-macropores distribution. The dynamic adsorption tests of toluene at 600 ppm showed that NHPCs have a high adsorption capacity up to 585 mg/g (NHPC(K)131), this was about 3 times more than that of AC (208 mg/g), and is a better absorbent compared to many other carbon adsorbents. The porous characteristics and toluene adsorption properties of NHPCs improved along with the fluctuation of the proportions of raw materials and active agents. The micropore size of the material is the main factor that affecting the toluene adsorption capacity. The analysis of toluene dynamic adsorption breakthrough curves revealed that NHPCs had great toluene adsorption kinetics with high adsorption rate constants and short mass transfer zone. The excellent toluene adsorption kinetics of NHPCs can be attributed to the hierarchical porous structure. The abundant 2–10 nm mesopores and macropores of NHPCs act as mass transfer channels for toluene molecules. The XPS analysis showed that the NHPCs have nitrogen doping up to 6.71% (NHPC(Na)161) and they effectively promote toluene adsorption. The nitrogen doping mechanism can be attributed to the reactions between cellulose pyrolysis substances and NH 3 which decomposed from (NH 4 ) 2 C 2 O 4 . Moreover, the pore forming reactivity of KHCO 3 is better than that of NaHCO 3 in the NHPCs activation process.
