The development of direct conversion for selective functionalization of inert methane plays an important role in the chemical sciences. Here, we report a photocatalytic approach to successfully convert methane into methyl chloride over NaTaO3 photocatalyst using an alkali chloride solution as the chlorine source under ambient conditions, which can overcome disadvantages of toxicity and corrosiveness in the traditional chlorination of methane. Various noble metals and oxide cocatalysts (Pt, Pd, Au, Ag, and Ag2O) and different chloride ion solutions (NaCl, KCl, LiCl, MgCl2, BaCl2, CaCl2, CuCl2, FeCl3, ZnCl2, etc.) are investigated to optimize the photocatalytic chlorination processes. Ag2O/NaTaO3 is the best photocatalyst, giving the maximum CH3Cl yield of 152 μmol g–1 h–1 in aqueous NaCl solutions and an apparent quantum yield of 7.2% under 254 nm monochromatic light irradiation. The target product CH3Cl is verified to be formed by a direct combination of the photoinduced species •CH3 and •Cl on the Ag2O surface. This work provides a meaningful approach for the conversion of methane into chloromethane under normal conditions.

High mass transfer efficiency, abundant surface sites, and short carrier migration distance can effectively enhance the photocatalytic performance of the materials. This study innovatively constructs a multiscale periodic macroporous (MPM) structure in the ternary metal oxide NaTaO 3 . The MPM architecture overcomes the inherent limitations of single-pore-size materials: large macropores suffer from thick pore walls leading to prolonged charge migration pathways and enhanced recombination, and low specific surface area, while small macropores lack efficient mass transport despite abundant active sites, and exhibit low electron-hole recombination. By synergistically integrating the advantages of both pore sizes, the MPM structure optimizes mass transport kinetics and charge separation efficiency, rendering it well-suited for solid-liquid phase photocatalytic reactions. Consequently, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of MPM NaTaO 3 is significantly enhanced, thereby establishing a novel strategy for the controlled synthesis of complex ternary metal oxides.

Photocatalytic ammonia synthesis is of great importance but remains very challenging in photocatalysis. Here, we fabricated a photocatalytic reaction system for the efficiently photocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia under UV irradiation using PdSn/NiO/NaTaO 3 :La as a photocatalyst in the presence of formic acid. Several important factors of the photocatalytic performance were investigated, including initial concentration of the nitrate solution, initial pH value and cocatalyst loadings. Nitrate conversion reaches 100% and ammonia selectivity is 72% over the optimum photocatalyst with 5% bimetallic PdSn alloy and 0.2% NiO loadings. The outstanding performance of photocatalyst can be ascribed to both the strong adsorption of nitrite on NiO and the efficient separation of electron-hole pairs by PdSn bimetallic alloy. Besides as the hole scavenger, formic acid also provides not only carboxyl anion radicals for nitrate reduction but also the in-situ buffer effect on ammonia formation. These results give inspiration for designing the reactive system with efficient photocatalytic ammonia synthesis.

In order to expand the light response range of wide band-gap semiconductor photocatalyst (NaTaO 3 ) for effective photocatalytic conversion of Cr(VI), an up-conversion luminescence agent (Er 3+ :YAlO 3 ) is combined with NaTaO 3 and a visible-light driven photocatalyst, NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 , is prepared. Moreover, several conduction band co-catalysts (Ag, Au and Pt) are deposited the surface of NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 , respectively, to facilitate the transfer rate of photo-generated electrons. X-ray diffractometer (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses are employed to confirm the morphology, microstructure and composition of the prepared photocatalysts. In addition, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra are determined to explore the visible-light absorption properties of Er 3+ :YAlO 3 , NaTaO 3 , NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 and X/NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 (X = Ag, Au and Pt). Photoluminescence (PL) spectra are used to estimate the recombination rate of electron–hole pairs. The effects of irradiation time, photosource kind, solution acidity and used times on the photocatalytic capabilities of NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 and X/NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 (X = Ag, Au and Pt) are investigated in detail. The results show that the uses of up-conversion luminescence agent (Er 3+ :YAlO 3 ) and co-catalysts (Ag, Au and Pt) can promote NaTaO 3 to utilize visible-light to carry out the photocatalytic conversion of Cr(VI). Particularly, the prepared Au/NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 nanocomposite with 1.0 wt% Au and 0.3:1.0 molar ratio of Er 3+ :YAlO 3 and NaTaO 3 shows the highest photocatalytic activity in conversion of Cr(VI).
