Multifunctional composite crystals have received great attention as an effective way to simplify the laser cavity . In this work, a self-Q-switched Raman laser operating at 1178 nm is demonstrated by using a multifunctional composite crystal BaTeW 2 O 9 (BTW). An acousto-optic modulator (AOM) with a diffraction efficiency of 74% is designed and fabricated based on the Raman crystal BTW. A 1064 nm pulsed laser with a maximum single pulse energy of 260.6 μJ corresponding to a pulse width of 42 ns is obtained by inserting the BTW AOM into the laser cavity with Nd: YAG as the laser gain medium. Then an 1178 nm self-Q-switched Raman laser with the maximum single pulse energy of 22.8 μJ corresponding to a pulse width of 10 ns is successfully obtained. This work not only provides a competitive multifunctional composite device that can simplify the Raman laser cavity design but also has guiding significance for the design and development of multifunctional composite crystals.

We report the first laser emission from flash ignition of Zr/Al nanoparticles with the addition of strong oxidizer KClO4 using Nd: YAG as a laser medium. The mixture Zr/Al/Kp-45 (mass ratio = 33%Zr: 33%Al: 34%KClO4) has the highest brightness temperature Tb = 4615 K and the adiabatic flame temperature Tf = 4194 K with the duration of 20 ms. At 1064 nm we measured a maximum output energy of 702.5 mJ with the duration of nearly 10 ms by using only 100 mg mixture with an output coupler (transmission T = 10%). Further optimizing the concentration cavity and increasing the mixture content will yield much higher efficiency and output energy.

As a prospective alternative technique for single crystal growth , solid-state crystal growth (SSCG) is applied in the fabrication of a Nd:YAG/YAG composite structure with a high Nd 3+ doping concentration. The microstructure morphologies and segregation behavior in the ceramic matrix, growth interface, and grown crystal are investigated. The results indicate that the dopant ions diffuse along with the grain boundary migration during the SSCG process while the segregation coefficient at the growth interface is higher than that of the grain boundary. A homogeneous grown crystal without segregation generates in a 6 at.% doping sample. When the doping concentration exceeds the solubility limit of the crystal lattice , surface morphology defects emerge as numerous protuberances in an 8 at.% doping sample. The SSCG technique has bright application prospects in heavily doped YAG crystal, especially for active ion diffusion limitation during the fabrication of planar waveguides .
