Non-thermal plasma synergistic Ni/Al2O3 for ammonia synthesis: Configuration and optimization of a double dielectric barrier discharge reactor

Ke Lu,Yihao Xu,Hao Yuan,Jianping Liang,Hongli Wang,Jie Zhang,Yinong Li,Dezheng Yang

The design of efficient reaction units and the use of efficient catalysts for green and non-polluting ammonia synthesis is an important and challenging issue. In this paper, we design a high-efficiency reaction device, a coaxial double dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor, which produces a more uniform plasma discharge during operation, changes the discharge characteristics, promotes the physicochemical reactions of ammonia synthesis, improves the efficiency of ammonia production, and reduces the energy consumption. The use of transition metal Ni and its metal oxide NiO loaded on the carrier as catalysts. The catalyst was comprehensively characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscope. The reaction mechanism of plasma-catalyzed ammonia synthesis was studied in detail by combining discharge characteristics, optical emission spectroscopy, and catalyst characterization. The reaction conditions and discharge parameters of the dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor were optimized, which greatly improved the energy efficiency and synthesis rate, which could reach 1002 μmol g −1  h −1 under the optimal conditions. Based on the experimental results, we analyzed how different conditions and parameters affect the reaction of ammonia synthesis.

Stabilized CO2 reforming of CH4 on modified Ni/Al2O3 catalysts via in-situ K2CO3-enabled dynamic coke elimination reaction

Pengfei Cao,Haitao Zhao,Stephen Adegbite,Bolun Yang,Edward Lester,Tao Wu

CO 2 dry reforming of methane (DRM) is one of the most promising routes for the large-scale utilization of greenhouse gases (CO 2 and CH 4 ). However, it is still of challenges to develop catalysts that are efficient and cheap but are of high resistivity in coke formation to maintain long-term stability. Herein, K 2 CO 3 was used as a promoter to enable dynamic coke elimination reaction over the Ni/Al 2 O 3 for CO 2 reforming of CH 4 . K 2 CO 3 -modified Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts were synthesized via a wet co-impregnation method and investigated for DRM. The 1.0 K-Ni/Al 2 O 3 exhibited the best stability in the test of 96 h on stream at 800 °C. It was found that coke resistance of K 2 CO 3 modified catalyst was significantly improved, as the coke formation on 1.0 K-Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst was only 1/3 of that on Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst after a long-term test. Characterization results showed that the growth of Ni particles was suppressed because the addition of K 2 CO 3 enhanced the interaction between Ni and Al 2 O 3 . Meanwhile, the addition of K 2 CO 3 raises the basicity of the catalysts, which enhances the adsorption of CO 2 on the surface and subsequently facilitates CO 2 dry reforming of CH 4 . In addition, the transient experiment reveals that K 2 CO 3 enables a dynamic coke elimination reaction (KCER) via enhancing the catalytic reaction of disordered carbon with CO 2 , which is considered as a promising low-cost approach to stabilize the performance of the Ni-based catalysts in DRM reaction.

Reductive amination of bio-based 2-hydroxytetrahydropyran to 5-Amino-1-pentanol over nano-Ni–Al2O3 catalysts

Jia Zhang,Jian Yang,Junying Tian,Hailong Liu,Xuemei Li,Weiguo Fang,Xun Hu,Chungu Xia,Jing Chen,Zhiwei Huang

The synthesis of useful amines from bio-based carbonyl compounds is highly desired owing to their mild reaction conditions and green sustainability. The reductive amination of bio-furfural-derived 2-hydroxytetrahydropyran (2-HTHP) to high-value-added 5-Amino-1-pentanol (5-AP) was carried out over efficient Ni–Al2O3 catalysts prepared by a co-precipitation method. Among the Ni–Al2O3 catalysts with different Ni loadings (0–100 wt%) tested, the 50Ni–Al2O3 catalyst exhibited the highest 5-AP yield of 91.3% under mild conditions of 60 °C and 2 MPa H2. This catalyst also presented good stability during a 150 h time-on-stream without appreciable deactivation. Characterization results showed that the 50Ni–Al2O3 catalyst exhibited small Ni0 nanoparticles (5.5 nm), a high reduction degree (up to 95%), and a large amount of strong Lewis acid sites. The cooperative catalysis of the strong Lewis acid sites and highly dispersed metallic Ni sites is suggested to play an important role in achieving high efficiency in 2-HTHP reductive amination.

Adsorption of Al2O3 {100} hydroxyl and Ni-Al2O3 electron transfer synergetic catalysis for efficient selective hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehydes

Tianyi Huang,Jiajia Wu,Yongqi Pan,Zhiyuan Yu,Fangyu Zhao,Shafqat Ullah,Yang Xu,Yong Chen,Zhehao Sun,Zongyou Yin,Qiangqiang Xue,Sibudjing Kawi,Shuliang Lu,Yujun Wang,Guangsheng Luo

The hydrogenation of the C=C bond in α-β unsaturated aldehydes faces substantial difficulties due to the steric hindrance and the conjugation effects of macromolecular unsaturated aldehydes. Herein, we introduce a novel approach to prepare nanosheet-structured Ni-Al 2 O 3 catalysts featuring exposed {100} crystal planes and hydroxyl groups, utilizing a microfluidic system to easily control crystal plane growth achieve support modification. In-situ characterizations and DFT calculations reveal that the exposed {100} crystal plane, a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) promotes electron transfer of Ni and significantly reducing the C=C hydrogenation energy barrier from 3.12   eV to 1.79   eV. The hydroxyl environment facilitates effective adsorption of the C=O bond, accelerating the reaction and enabling rapid desorption of the product. Under modified reaction conditions for the preparation of 2-ethylhexanol, the catalyst still achieved a yield of 99.9%. This simple method of support modification enables rapid large-scale preparation, possessing significant potential for industrial applications.

Boosting hydrogen production from steam reforming of glycerol via constructing moderate metal-support interaction in Ni@Al2O3 catalyst

Yunzhu Wang,Songshan Zhu,Jichang Lu,Jiangping Liu,Yi Zhao,Sufang He,Yuhui Zhao,Huihui Lu,Yongming Luo

In this manuscript, the relationship between metal-support interaction and the catalytic performance for hydrogen production from steam reforming of glycerol (GSR) over Ni-Al 2 O 3 based catalysts was studied. Pure core–shell structured Ni@Al 2 O 3 and supported Ni/Al 2 O 3 with a fixed medium-sized nickel particle were synthesized without the other additional components to eliminate the influence of other factors. And then the nickel-alumina interaction of Ni@Al 2 O 3 was tuned precisely and the regulatory mechanism of nickel-alumina interaction on catalytic activity was elaborated. The strong nickel-alumina interaction over Ni/Al 2 O 3 and Ni@Al 2 O 3 with high calcination temperature resulted in the formation of NiAl 2 O 4 , which was unfavorable to the reduction of nickel species to obtain the more active nickel. Consequently, the poor catalytic performance was caused. The moderate nickel-alumina interaction of Ni@Al 2 O 3 promoted the exposure of the maximum area of active nickel and obtained higher turnover frequency (TOF). Thus, Ni@Al 2 O 3 showed the high catalytic performance in GSR. Additionally, metal-support interaction affected the morphology and growth mechanism of coke deposition. For Ni@Al 2 O 3 with moderate nickel-alumina interaction, the formation of carbon deposition followed the ‘tip-growth’ pattern, and the filamentous coke was mainly formed on catalysts. Conversely, ‘base-growth’ pattern was followed on Ni/Al 2 O 3 with strong nickel-alumina interaction to form mainly encapsulated coke. The research findings of the regulatory role of interaction between nickel and alumina on catalytic performance will provide valuable guidelines for designing effective GSR catalysts.

An anionic surfactant-assisted equilibrium adsorption method to prepare highly dispersed Fe-promoted Ni/Al2O3 catalysts for highly selective mercaptan removal

Tingting Huang,Qingyi Peng,Wenjin Shi,Jundong Xu,Yu Fan

This article proposes a novel sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS)-assisted equilibrium adsorption method for preparing highly dispersed Ni/Al 2 O 3 and Fe-promoted NiFe/Al 2 O 3 thioetherification catalysts. The proposed strategy anchors nickel cations onto the electronegative surface of an Al 2 O 3 support modified by negatively charged DBS − bilayers. As a result, this method achieves highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles without strengthening the metal-support interaction, promoting the reducibility and sulfurization of the supported Ni species. The as-prepared Ni-based catalysts have a smaller size, a higher dispersion of metal nanoparticles, and a greater amount of active metal sulfides than their counterparts prepared by the conventional impregnation method, endowing them with excellent catalytic performance for the highly selective removal of mercaptans. This method provides a new opportunity to prepare highly dispersed metal nanoparticles without a strong metal-support interaction.

Subcritical water gasification of lignocellulosic wastes for hydrogen production with Co modified Ni/Al2O3 catalysts

Jie Sun,Lujiang Xu,Guo-hua Dong,Sonil Nanda,Hu Li,Zhen Fang,Janusz A. Kozinski,Ajay K. Dalai

Nickel-based catalysts with different supports and cobalt loadings were synthesized for hydrothermal gasification of cellulose at 350 °C. The activity of Ni catalysts was found in the order of Al 2 O 3 > spent bleaching clay ash > SiO 2 with H 2 yield of 80.6%, 69.0% and 57.0%. When 6 wt. % Co was added, 10Ni-6Co/Al 2 O 3 showed the highest H 2 yield of 88.4% i.e., 1.44 times that without Co addition. Catalysts were characterized by NH 3 -TPD, TPR, XRD, BET and XPS, showing that Ni-Co alloy formation promoted H 2 production. Single-factor experiments were conducted to study variables in the presence of 10Ni-6Co/Al 2 O 3 with the selected conditions of 0.5 g biomass and 20 min at 350 °C (achieving 94.9% H 2 yield from cellulose) for gasification of rice straw, peanut shell and cotton straw with the increase in H 2 yield by 51.4, 76.0 and 67.8 times. Ni-Co/Al 2 O 3 catalysts enhanced hydrothermal gasification of actual agricultural residues.

Improving the coking resistance of Ni/Al2O3 modified by promoter (Ce, Zr, or Mg) under ethanol steam reforming: Perspective from growth sites of coking

Kai Shi,Xia An,Yali Du,Zhaoyang Fan,Xu Wu,Xianmei Xie

A series of nickel catalysts supported on Al 2 O 3 that modified with Ce-, Zr-, and Mg-promoter were prepared via a sol-gel method and a subsequent impregnation method for the ethanol steam reforming reaction (ESR). The effect of promoters on the carbon deposition was focused. Compared with Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst, the introduction of different promoters decreased the selectivity for CH 2 CH 2 to different extent, especially, Ce-, Mg- containing catalysts completely suppressed the production of CH 2 CH 2 for 30 h tested at 500 °C. And the medium and strong acid sites were confirmed as the major sites for CH 2 CH 2 production. Encapsulation carbon derived from ethylene takes the primary responsibility for carbon deposition, and the formation of metal carbide is the other reason for causing carbon deposition. Among the tested catalysts, Ni/Mg–Al 2 O 3 exhibited a better performance for anti-carbon, which was attributed to the blockage of medium and strong acid sites as well as the high Ni crystallinity .

Balancing Ni0 and Ni2+ on γ-Al2O3 for Efficient Steam Methane Reforming

Junjie Zhang,Zhourong Xiao,Li Wang,Xiangwen Zhang,Guozhu Li

Graphical The key role of Ni valence state on the catalytic SMR performance of Ni/Al 2 O 3 is reported. Ni 0 /Ni 2+ ratio on Ni/Al 2 O 3 is individually regulated by changing the reduction temperature while maintaining the states of nickel particles and support. A deep understanding is gained on how the Ni valence state of Ni/Al 2 O 3 affects the catalytic SMR performance. Steam methane reforming (SMR) is the most mature technology for hydrogen production in industry, and alumina supported nickel (Ni/Al 2 O 3 ) is the most widely used catalyst. Herein, the key role of Ni valence state on the catalytic SMR performance of Ni/Al 2 O 3 is reported. The ratio of Ni 0 /Ni 2+ on Ni/Al 2 O 3 is individually and effectively tuned by changing the reduction temperature after wet impregnation. Catalytic performance of Ni/Al 2 O 3 is greatly dependent on the surface concentration of Ni 0 and Ni 2+ . The catalyst reduced at 675 °C possesses balanced Ni 0 and Ni 2+ sites and exhibits superior catalytic performance, on which 60 % of methane is stably converted at 600 °C. CH 4 -TPD and CO-TPD profiles demonstrate that appropriate Ni 0 /Ni 2+ ratio can promote the adsorption of CH 4 and inhibit the moderate-strength adsorption of CO, which leads to increased SMR activity and selectivity.

Mild and selective hydrogenation of nitriles into primary amines over a supported Ni catalyst

Jianjian Wang,Qingjie Tang,Shiwei Jin,Yanxin Wang,Ziliang Yuan,Quan Chi,Zehui Zhang

The development of new heterogeneous non-noble catalytic systems for the selective hydrogenation of nitriles into primary amines is a challenging task. In this study, a mesoporous Al2O3 supported Ni catalyst (denoted as Ni/Al2O3-600, where 600 represents the reduction temperature) demonstrated a high catalytic activity for the hydrogenation of nitriles under mild conditions (60–80 °C and 2.5 bar H2) with ammonia as the additive. This catalytic system has a wide substrate range and the Ni/Al2O3 catalyst demonstrated a good tolerance to other functional groups, which was possibly due to its high catalytic activity under mild conditions. A plausible reaction pathway was proposed for the hydrogenation of nitriles into primary amines, and it was found that ammonia played a great role in the enhancement of the selectivity of primary amines by the inhibition of the side reaction to generate secondary amines. In addition, the Ni/Al2O3-600 catalyst could be reused five times without activity loss through convenient magnetic recovery.

Manganese-promoted Ni/Al2O3 catalysts for effective CO2 methanation

Wenhao Zhang,Liang shen,Longhao Xu,Fayang Zhou,Fengyin Sun,Jing Xu,Minghui Zhu

Hydrogenation of CO 2 to methane is a feasible solution to the growing global environmental and energy challenges. Nickel-based catalysts are efficient and cost effective for CO 2 methanation. Hernin, we synthesized Mn-promoted Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with facilitated CO 2 methanation and elucidated the crucial role of Mn. After Mn doping, NiMn/Al 2 O 3 catalysts showed improved NiO dispersion. Subsequently, H 2 reduction and CO 2 methanation treatments resulted in reduction of NiO and MnO 2 into Ni and MnO, and incorporation of Ni 2+ into MnO lattice, forming NiMnO x and creating numerous Ni-NiMnO x interfaces. The abundant oxygen vacancies from NiMnO x could enhance CO 2 activation. Moreover, oxygen vacancies at the interface also promote electron transfer from Ni and MnO, leading to electron-poor Ni nanoparticles and thus significantly promoting the *CO methanation. Ultimately, the electron-poor Ni nanoparticles and abundant oxygen vacancies at the Ni-NiMnO x interface jointly facilitate CO 2 methanation.

Hydrogen-rich syngas production by catalytic cracking of tar in wastewater under supercritical condition

Mi Yan,Jianyong Liu,Dwi Hantoko,Ekkachai Kanchanatip,Nurak Grisdanurak,Yi Cai,Zengliang Gao

This paper presents the results from experimental study of syngas production by catalytic cracking of tar in wastewater under supercritical condition . Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts were prepared via the ultrasonic assisted incipient wetness impregnation on activated alumina , and calcined at 600 °C for 4 h. All catalysts showed mesoporous structure with specific surface area in a range of 146.6–215.3 m 2 /g. The effect of Ni loading (5–30 wt%), reaction temperature (400–500 °C), and tar concentration (0.5–7 wt%) were systematically investigated. The overall reaction efficiency and the gas yields, especially for H 2 , were significantly enhanced with an addition of Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts. With 20%Ni/Al 2 O 3 , the H 2 yield increased by 146% compared to the non-catalytic experiment. It is noteworthy that the reaction at 450 °C with the addition of 20%Ni/Al 2 O 3 had a comparable efficiency to the reaction without catalyst at 500 °C. The maximum H 2 yield of 46.8 mol/kg tar was achieved with 20%Ni/Al 2 O 3 at 500 °C and 0.5 wt% tar concentration. The catalytic performance of the catalysts gradually decreased as the reuse cycle increased, and could be recovered to 88% of the fresh catalyst after regeneration. 20%Ni/Al 2 O 3 has a potential to improve H 2 production, as well as a good reusability . Thus, it is considered a promising catalyst for energy conversion of tar in wastewater.
