Magnetothermal therapy (MT) is a noninvasive cancer treatment that has shown great promise in recent years. However, the low magnetothermal efficiency of the existing magnetic nanoparticles used in MT has been an obstacle to their widespread applications. In this work, we report a new class of Fe-Co-Ni-Cu high-entropy magnetic nanoparticles (HEMNPs) with exceptional magnetothermal properties synthesized by a thermal decomposition method. The fabricated HEMNPs, having an average diameter of 60–70 nm, exhibited a saturation magnetization of 42.4 emu/g and coercivity of 129.5 Oe. The hyperthermia measurement reveals that the HEMNPs have a maximum specific loss power of 202 W/g at the concentration of 2 mg/ml under an alternating magnetic field with an intensity of 46 Oe and a frequency of 266 kHz, demonstrating the great potential for MT applications. Our results demonstrate that the high-entropy concept can be extended to develop high-performance magnetic nanoparticles for MT applications.

The preparation of composite carbon nanomaterials is one of the methods for improving the electrochemical performance of carbon-based electrode materials for supercapacitors. However, traditional preparation methods are complicated and time-consuming, and the binder also leads to an increase in impedance and a decrease in specific capacitance. Therefore, in this work, we reduced Ni-Cu nanoparticles on the surface of nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (CNFs) by employing an electrostatic spinning method combined with pre-oxidation and annealing treatments. At the same time, Ni-Cu nanoparticles were vulcanized to Ni–Cu–S nanoparticles without destroying the structure of the CNFs. The area-specific capacitance of the CNFs/Ni–Cu–S–300 electrode reaches 1208 mF cm−2at a current density of 1 mA cm−2, and the electrode has a good cycling stability with a capacitance retention rate of 76.5% after 5000 cycles. As a self-supporting electrode, this electrode can avoid the problem of the poor adhesion of electrode materials and the low utilization of active materials due to the inactivity of the binder and conductive agent in conventional collector electrodes, so it has excellent potential for application.

The electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 towards CO is one of the most desirable routines to reduce atmospheric CO 2 concentration and maintain a global carbon balance. In this work, a novel porous NiCu-embedded ZIF-derived N-doped carbon nanoparticle (NiCu@NCNPs) catalyst has been identified as an active, highly selective, stable, and cost-effective catalyst in CO 2 reduction. A CO selectivity as high as 100% has been achieved on NiCu@NCNPs which is the highest reported to date. The particle current density of CO on NiCu@NCNPs is around 15 mA cm –2 under the optimized potential at −0.9 V vs. RHE. The NiCu@NCNPs electrode also exhibits excellent stability during the five sequential CO 2 electroreduction experiments. The superior catalytic performance of NiCu@NCNPs in CO 2 RR can be related to its microstructure with high electrochemical surface area and low electron transfer resistance. Furthermore, a kinetic analysis has shown the formation of intermediate *COOH is the rate-determining step in CO 2 RR towards CO. According to the results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, a low Gibbs-free energy change (∆ G ) for the rate-determining step leads to the enhanced catalytic performance of CO 2 RR on NiCu@NCNPs.

In this study, novel Ni–Cu–Zn ferrites with the chemical formula [Ni 0.6 Zn 0.4 ][Cu 0.2 Co x Fe 1.8− x ]O 4 ( x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25) doped with Co 2+ ions were designed and manufactured by standard solid-state reaction method. The magnetic properties, surface characteristics, and ion occupancy of ferrites were studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and we explained the different mechanisms of the results and the relationship between magnetic properties and microstructures. For the obtained samples, cobalt ions entered the lattice, and all samples were characterized as spinel structures. As the doping amount of Co 2+ ions increases, the lattice constant and volume of the sample also increases. With an appropriate doping level, Co 2+ ions-doped Ni–Cu–Zn ferrites can maintain higher saturation magnetization, higher magnetic permeability, and lower hysteresis loss. When x ≤ 0.1, the saturation magnetization M s increases significantly as the doping amount of Co 2+ ions increases, but when x > 0.1, the value decreases. The experimental results show that the saturation magnetization value is 118.08 emu/g, the magnetic permeability value is 39.47 H/m, and the hysteresis loss is 1.192 mW/cm 3 at an optimum doping amount. Therefore, the sample achieves the best magnetic properties when the doping amount is 0.1.

The impregnation method is commonly employed to prepare supported multi-metallic catalysts but it is often difficult to achieve homogeneous and stable alloy structures. In this work, we revealed the dependence of alloying behavior on the support morphology by fabricating Ni–Cu over different shaped CeO2. Specifically, nanocube ceria favoured the formation of monometallic Cu and Ni-rich phases whereas polycrystalline and nanorod ceria induced the formation of a mixture of Cu-rich alloys with monometallic Ni. Surprisingly, nanopolyhedron (NP) ceria led to the generation of homogeneous Ni–Cu nanoalloys owing to the equivalent interactions of Ni and Cu species with CeO2 (111) facets which exposed relatively few coordinative unsaturated sites. More importantly, a strong interfacial effect was observed for Ni–Cu/CeO2-NP due to the presence of CeOx adjacent to metal sites at the interface, resulting in excellent stability of the alloy structure. With the aid of CeOx, NiCu nanoalloys showed outstanding catalytic behaviour in acetylene and hexyne hydrogenation reactions. This study provides valuable insights into how fully alloyed and stable catalysts may be prepared by tailoring the support morphology while still employing a universal impregnation method.

Due to escalating carbon emissions, increasing attention is being focused on the synthesis of biomass-derived liquid fuels with a low CO 2 footprint. Currently, the dominant biobased liquid fuel in the diesel range is green diesel, produced via deoxygenation of non-edible natural/waste oils and their free fatty acid components into engine-compatible diesel-range alkanes. Industrially, sulfided NiMo or CoMo catalysts are typically used, leading to total hydrocarbon yields of 70-80 wt%. However, their inevitable sulfur leaching often contaminates the products and requires the addition of sulfur-containing agents. Here, we developed a highly selective sulfur-free Ni-Cu alloy catalyst by disentangling the electronic and size effects, to enable green diesel synthesis through the decarbonylation of palmitic acid—the most common fatty acid in these feedstocks. An unprecedented decarbonylation product (pentadecane) yield of 98% (on a molar basis) was achieved using a Ni-Cu alloy catalyst with a Ni/Cu ratio of 1:1 under mild reaction conditions (2 MPa H 2 , 250 °C). Minimal metal sintering or leaching was observed after multiple reuses. Kinetic studies show that incorporating Cu into Ni markedly reduces both the apparent activation energy and the reaction order for the conversion of palmitic acid. These results, combined with catalyst characterization, reveal that introducing Cu into Ni not only facilitates the adsorption and activation of the carboxylic hydroxyl group to promote the reductive deoxygenation of palmitic acid into aldehyde/alcohol intermediates—the slow step in decarbonylation—but also weakens the adsorption of C–C bonds on Ni by enhancing its electron density.

In this work, the structure and properties of ZrO2 nanoparticle reinforced Ni–W, Ni–B and Ni–Cu matrix nanocomposite coatings were comparatively studied. Their surface morphology, composition, microstructure, topography, hardness, wear and corrosion resistance were examined by various methods . The nanocomposites exhibit dense, nodular-like morphology with nanocrystalline structure. The results show that the ZrO2 particles have homogeneously dispersed in the nanocomposites. The formation of the protrusion structure was partly attributed to the heterogeneous distribution of the electric field. The presence of ZrO2 nanoparticles could refine the crystallite size of the Ni–W, Ni–B and Ni–Cu alloy matrix to 12.5 ± 1, 10.5 ± 0.5 and 15 ± 0.1 nm, respectively. The corrosion resistance of these nanocomposites can be improved by the incorporation of ZrO2 nanoparticles into the alloy matrix. The Ra of Ni–W/ZrO2, Ni–B/ZrO2 and Ni–Cu/ZrO2 nanocomposites are about 53 ± 3, 69 ± 2, 18 ± 1 nm, respectively, expressing the rougher surface of Ni–B/ZrO2 compared to the others. It indicated that the composition of these alloy matrix have different crystallite size, which could affect the surface roughness of the electrodeposits. The inclusion of ZrO2 particles in Ni-based alloys could enhance its properties. The reinforcement effect of the anti-wear properties of the nanocomposites was proposed. The Rct value of the Ni–W–ZrO2, Ni–B–ZrO2, Ni–Cu–ZrO2 were 50.93, 105.18, 44.67 kΩ · cm2, respectively, indicating that the Ni–B–ZrO2 nanocomposite coating has the highest corrosion resistance. The Rct values depends on not only the composition of the coatings, but also the electrodeposition conditions, which influence the crystallize size and compactness of the electrodeposits. The order of the microhardness and anti-wear properties is Ni–W–ZrO2 > Ni–B–ZrO2 > Ni–Cu–ZrO2.

To address the challenges of impedance mismatch and limited absorption bandwidth in ferrite-based microwave absorbers, a one-step oxygen-deficient sintering process was employed to fabricate Zn 0.35 Ni 0.65 Fe 2 O 4 /Ni-Cu multiphase composites. This approach effectively regulates Cu 2+ substitution for Ni 2+ /Zn 2+ in the ferrite lattice while modifying the Ostwald ripening process, synergistically enhancing dielectric and magnetic losses. The pure Zn 0.35 Ni 0.65 Fe 2 O 4 exhibits a broad low-frequency absorption of 5.6 GHz (3.4–9.0 GHz, covering the entire C-band). Notably, the Zn 0.35 Ni 0.65 Fe 2 O 4 /Ni-Cu composite achieves a remarkable minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −35 dB along with an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.7 GHz. Consequently, this work provides both a facile synthesis methodology and mechanistic insights for designing high-performance electromagnetic materials with multiband operability.

Inspired by biological surfaces such as lotus leaves and Stenocara beetles, superhydrophobic coatings have attracted considerable attention due to their exceptional water repellency, self-cleaning behavior, and corrosion resistance. In this work, Ni-Cu/HDTMS-MX superhydrophobic coatings were fabricated through the co-deposition of MXene with a Ni Cu coating, followed by surface modification using hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS). The Ni-Cu/HDTMS-MX coatings exhibit excellent superhydrophobic performance, with a water contact angle (CA) of 155.1 ± 2.2° and a roll-off angle (RA) of 6 ± 0.5°, accompanied by effective water jet rebound, self-cleaning capability, and enhanced corrosion resistance. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate an order-of-magnitude reduction in corrosion rate (0.5 × 10 −3 mm·y −1 ) and corrosion current density (0.4 × 10 −7 A·cm −2 ), while the impedance modulus |Z| at 0.01 Hz for the Ni-Cu/HDTMS-MX coating reaches approximately 375% of that of the Ni Cu coating. The improved corrosion resistance is attributed to the labyrinth-like diffusion barrier introduced by MXene and the HDTMS-derived hydrophobic film, which significantly lowers the surface energy of the coating. Upon contact with aqueous media, the coating maintains a Cassie-Baxter wetting state, indicating stable superhydrophobic behavior. The entrapped air pockets within the hierarchical micro/nanostructure effectively block the penetration of corrosive species, thereby improving corrosion resistance in chloride-containing environments. This work provides a feasible strategy for designing durable superhydrophobic coatings for the long-term protection of carbon steel in harsh marine environments.

Porous Ni-Cu alloy films composed of nanosheets are directly fabricated on Cu substrate using a facile potentiostatic electrodeposition approach from a 1:2 choline chloride-ethylene glycol eutectic solvent (ethaline) containing nickel chloride and copper chloride. Electrochemical co-deposition of Ni-Cu alloy in ethaline is found to be thermodynamically favorable in comparison to conventional aqueous solutions. The deposition process occurs via an instantaneous nucleation and growth of nanoparticles at the initial stage and develops vertically to form nanoporous structures arrayed with nanosheets over deposition time . The as-prepared porous Ni-Cu alloy nanosheet arrays exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media , which displays a small Tafel slope of 57.2 mV dec −1 with a low onset potential of −48 mV vs. RHE at an optimal condition. It requires small overpotentials of −128 and −150 mV to drive catalytic current densities of 10 and 20 mA cm −2 , respectively. This facile electrodeposition method performed in ethaline provides an efficient way to fabricate porous Ni-based alloy nanosheets directly on a current collector, which is a promising technology for the synthesis of earth-abundant HER electrocatalysts .

Developing efficient, economic, and environment-friendly electrocatalysts to meet the industrialized hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) needs is highly desired for dealing with the energy crisis. Under the known premise, how to reasonably control the doping amount of copper greatly influences the structure and is one of the key factors affecting the performance of the catalyst. Herein, a series of Ni–Cu–C electrocatalysts are successfully synthesized through a simple electrodeposition method. The unique dendritic morphology can be obtained by adjusting the different glucose concentrations . DFT simulation reveals that the proper proportion of copper can significantly modulate the H adsorption-free energy Δ G H ∗ It can boost the intrinsic activity of Ni–Cu–C catalysts. NCC-3 delivers an overpotential of 87 mV and 165 mV in alkaline media at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively and presents outstanding long-term stability for 50 h. Such excellent HER activity stems from a large ECSA area and better electron-transfer ability. The study presents a feasible way to control metal alloy catalysts' composition in the electrodeposition process .

Ammonia is a very promising source of carbon-free chemical energy. However, current electrochemical technologies for ammonia use are limited by the kinetically sluggish and easily toxic catalyst surface ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR). Here, we report an AOR catalyst in which Ni, Cu, and Co are highly dispersed on single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (Ni–Cu–Co/CNT) in the form of hydroxides and hydroxyl oxides by using a one-step solvothermal method. Ni–Cu–Co/CNT, with Co doping and a support of the CNT, has shown highly efficient catalytic activity for the AOR in alkaline media. Cyclic voltammetry tests show that the catalyst has an onset potential of 0.3 V vs Ag/AgCl and a peak current of 96 mA cm–2. Density functional theory suggests that the addition of Co and a CNT leads to a lower energy barrier for the critical AOR step, which can be attributed to intermetallic synergy and metal–support interactions formed by the CNT.
