Mesoporous silica (SiO 2 ) supported highly dispersed Ni catalysts with ZrO 2 and surfactant β-cyclodextrin (CD) were prepared by the impregnation method, and their catalytic performance for three-phase methanation of CO were evaluated. It is shown that ZrO 2 promotes the dispersion of Ni species on mesoporous SiO 2 , leading to the increase in Ni dispersion and methanation activity. For the ZrO 2 content, the optimum is 5 wt%. Moreover, when adding CD in the preparation of Ni5Zr/SiO 2 catalyst, CD was found effectively enhanced the dispersion of Ni species and interaction between Ni species and support, leading to a smaller size of NiO particles and more exposed active surfaces, which promotes the CO adsorption capacity. As the molar ratio of CD/Ni rises, the crystallite size of metallic Ni decreased. Ni5Zr/SiO 2 (1:5) catalyst prepared with 5 wt% ZrO 2 and 1:5 molar ratio of CD/Ni shows the optimal catalytic activity for the three-phase CO methanation reaction. This is because of the highest dispersion of metallic Ni and smallest size of NiO particles.

Ethanol steam reforming (ESR) has drawn great attention for sustainable H 2 production. Design active and sinter resistant nanocatalysts are critical issues for ESR reaction. Herein, a core–shell structured Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 nanocomposite for ESR reaction has been synthesized via a one-pot facile encapsulation strategy, which is featured by highly active and sintering resistance for ESR reaction. Structural and morphological characterizations revealed that each Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 nanocomposite contained a 3 nm Pt-Cu core and multiple Ni nanoparticles with diameters of around 3 nm anchored on the SiO 2 shell. The Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 nanoreactor exhibited higher ethanol conversion (99.99%) and H 2 selectivity (70.32%) and an excellent stability with no loss of activity after 50 h of reaction at 450 °C. The advantages were originated from the ultra-small size of metal nanoparticles and the unique core–shell structure provides a great opportunity to give full play to the catalytic activity of active sites thus guaranteed excellent catalytic activity. Compared with the supported Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 catalyst, the Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 nanoreactor exhibit good stability and sintering resistance due to the encapsulation of the metal nanoparticles and the enhanced metal-support interaction. Thus, it is supposed that this type of catalyst opens a new strategy for the design of the ESR catalyst.

A SiO2-supported Fe and Ni bimetallic catalyst has been synthesized, characterized and, for the first time, tested as a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst for the degradation and mineralization of methylene blue (MB) dye. The morphological, structural, and optical properties of this catalyst were analyzed using FESEM, XRD, FTIR and UV–vis spectroscopy. The photocatalytic degradation of MB has been investigated using Fe–Ni/SiO2 catalysts under visible and solar light irradiation in aqueous solutions. The effects of solution pH, H2O2 concentration, initial MB concentration, catalyst dosage and light intensity on the degradation of MB have been systematically investigated. An almost complete degradation was achieved within 60 min with a solution pH of 3.00, a H2O2 concentration of 3.0 mM L−1 and a catalyst dose of 0.85 g L−1. The degradation and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiencies were 99.80% and 86.19%, respectively, for sunlight. However, the values were only 99.01% and 75.71% for visible light. These results suggested that Fe–Ni/SiO2 possesses significant catalytic activity, and the solar-Fenton process is a feasible method for degrading and mineralizing the MB dye compared with artificial visible light. The catalytic action is attributed to H2O2 and the formation of hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) by Fe(III) in Fe–Ni/SiO2via the photo-Fenton reactions. Furthermore, we determined that the catalyst activity can be replicated in successive experiments without a significant decline in the Fe–Ni/SiO2 and H2O2 processing efficiency under light irradiation. Our results will be useful for future improvement of active heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts for developing organic dye-containing wastewater treatments.

Ammonia is considered as a potential hydrogen carrier as its high hydrogen content. Hydrogen release still presents challenges due to the lack of efficient catalyst. In this work, we report a Ni@SiO 2 catalyst prepared through a sol–gel method, which displays satisfied catalytic activity and remarkable long-term stability. The origination of activity and stability has been investigated carefully by various characterizations. The strong interaction between nickel species and silica species is responsible for the excellent performance via generating small nickel particle and hindering the sintering of nickel during the high temperature reaction condition. This study offers novel insights into the design and preparation of highly efficient catalysts for ammonia decomposition to produce hydrogen.

Selective hydrogenation of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) is an ideal way to prepare 1,4-cyclohexane dicarboxylate (DMCD), an important intermediate and monomer. Even though noble metal-based catalysts (e.g., Ru, Pd) have been developed for selective hydrogenation of DMT, the use of non-precious Ni catalysts to achieve high activity and selectivity is still challenging. In this study, we present that only 0.5 wt% of KF by post-impregnated doping can significantly improve the performance of Ni/SiO2 catalysts (83% vs. 96% selectivity; 41% vs. 95% conversion). The selectivity of DMCD can be up to 97%, which is the highest reported over Ni catalysts. The boosting effect of KF modification might be due to higher amounts of Ni(0) species and lower amounts of moderate acidic sites, which are beneficial for selective hydrogenation of phenyl rings over hydrogenolysis of ester groups.

A series of relative inert SiO 2 supported NiP-x/SiO 2 catalysts, containing different ratio of metallic nickel to nickel phosphides, were employed to clarify the synergistic effect of metallic nickel–nickel phosphides in dry methane reforming reaction. Ni/SiO 2 catalyst exhibits good activity but severe carbon deposition and visible nickel particles sintering in dry methane reforming, which results in evident deactivation after 50 h reaction. The presence of P increases the dispersion of nickel species, results in smaller nickel species particles size. The co-existence of metallic nickel and nickel phosphides species was confirmed by multiple characterizations. Because of the relative stronger CO 2 dissociation properties, NiP-x/SiO 2 catalysts exhibit higher resistance of carbon deposition. In addition, P content makes great difference to not only carbon deposition but also activity in dry methane reforming. NiP-3/SiO 2 , which has good activity, stability and anti-coking properties in dry methane reforming, is the optimal catalyst in our study scope. Graphical Abstract

The lignocellulosic biomass utilization is a feasible way to obtain alternative fuels and chemicals. Xylitol as an ideal sweetener is one of the top twelve value-added chemicals derived from biomass. Xylitol is also used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. Thus, the production of xylitol from biomass is significantly important. A silica supported nickel catalyst derived from nickel phyllosilicate for efficient aqueous phase xylose hydrogenation to xylitol was developed in this study. Higher xylose conversion was observed over the nickel phyllosilicate derived catalyst compared to nickel oxide derived nickel catalyst prepared by impregnation and commercial Raney Ni catalyst. The excellent xylitol selectivity (approximately 99 %) was also obtained over the nickel phyllosilicate derived catalyst. The differences in structure and property resulted from different preparation methods were investigated by means of XRF, N 2 physisorption, XRD, FT-IR, H 2 -TPR, TEM as well as H 2 -TPD. The higher nickel dispersion of nickel phyllosilicate derived catalysts, which could be synthesized by ammonia evaporation and deposition-precipitation using Na 2 CO 3 as precipitator, led to higher xylose conversion. In addition, the phyllosilicate derived nickel catalyst demonstrated outstanding stability. Consequently, phyllosilicate derived nickel catalyst is promising for the industrial application for the production of xylitol form xylose aqueous hydrogenation thanks to its higher activity and selectivity as well as good stability.

At present, the selective hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated aldehydes remains a challenge due to competition between unsaturated functional groups (C=C and C=O). In this study, N-doped carbon deposited on silica-supported nickel Mott–Schottky type catalysts (Ni/SiO2@NxC) was prepared for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) by using the respective hydrothermal method and high-temperature carbonization method. The prepared optimal Ni/SiO2@N7C catalyst achieved 98.9% conversion and 83.1% selectivity for 3-phenylpropionaldehyde (HCAL) in the selective hydrogenation reaction of CAL. By constructing the Mott–Schottky effect, the electron transfer from metallic Ni to N-doped carbon at their contact interface was promoted, and the electron transfer was demonstrated by XPS and UPS. Experimental results indicated that by modulating the electron density of metallic Ni, the catalytic hydrogenation of C=C bonds was preferentially performed to obtain higher HCAL selectivity. Meanwhile, this work also provides an effective way to design electronically adjustable type catalysts for more selective hydrogenation reactions. Keywords:Ni catalyst;N-doped carbon;electronic effect;cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation

Recently, the ecofriendly techniques for production of nanohybrids using natural biomass have aroused great attention. This study reported a green and facile synthesis of highly dispersed supported metal catalysts using sesbania powder (SP) extracted from the natural sesbania plant. Well-dispersed Ni/SiO2 catalysts were effectively fabricated by an SP-assisted sol–gel method. The influencing factors including the additive amounts of SP, metal loadings, and metal types on the physicochemical properties of supported catalysts were primarily investigated. The testing results revealed that the additive SP significantly facilitated the uniform distribution of metal species during heat treatment, leading to the existence of ultrasmall nanoparticles (<4 nm) and high dispersion of supported metal. The as-prepared Ni/SiO2 catalysts were applied to the dry reforming of methane and demonstrated excellent catalytic performance due to the prevention of the agglomeration of Ni species and fabrication of Ni embedded in the silica framework through the introduction of SP.

Co-modified Ni/SiO 2 produces aviation fuel from polyolefins under mild conditions. • Co doping modulates Ni electronic structure to favor internal C-C bond cleavage. • The yield of liquid reaches 82.3% with 79.0% selectivity to the C 8 -C 16 fraction. • Coupled with green energy, the process reduces carbon footprint by 80%. The escalating accumulation of plastic waste poses a major threat to global sustainability. Converting waste polyolefins into aviation fuel offers a promising valorization route, but the challenge remains in overcoming the limited performance of non-noble metal catalysts. Here, a 10Ni-2Co/SiO 2 catalyst was developed that achieved an excellent balance between activity and selectivity for polyethylene hydrogenolysis. Under mild conditions at 280 °C and 3 MPa H 2 , it delivered an 82.3% liquid yield with 79.0% selectivity toward C 8 -C 16 hydrocarbons. The incorporation of Co induced the coexistence of Ni 0 and Ni δ+ species, which may have facilitated internal C-C bond cleavage along the polyethylene backbone. This synergy may have contributed to hydrogen activation and C-C bond cleavage, which may have promoted a continuous “cleavage-hydrogenation-desorption” sequence, thereby helping to suppress excessive chain scission and favoring the selective formation of aviation-fuel-range hydrocarbons. This catalyst also showed broad applicability to other real-life waste polyolefins, and when powered by renewable energy, the process achieved a significantly reduced carbon footprint, offering a sustainable route for plastic upcycling and aviation decarbonization. Xylitol is a value-added health product from the hemicellulose component in biomass. In this work, highly efficient Cu–Ni/SiO2 catalysts are developed for the production of xylitol by means of xylose hydrogenation. The bimetallic catalysts exhibit higher activity compared to the corresponding monometallic nickel or copper catalyst and the currently used industrial Raney nickel catalyst. The bimetallic catalyst with a higher ratio of nickel to copper shows a better performance. The 5Cu15Ni/SiO2 catalyst exhibits a xylose conversion of 96% accompanied by higher than 99% selectivity to xylitol under the moderate conditions of 100 °C and 3MPa H2. The bimetallic catalysts show improved performances when they are activated at a low temperature. The apparent activation energies of xylose hydrogenation over the 5Cu15Ni/SiO2 and 20Ni/SiO2 catalysts are 16.6 and 25.2 kJ/mol, respectively. The formation of the Cu–Ni alloy leads to a lower activation energy and thus superior performance for xylose hydrogenation to xylitol.

CO 2 methanation via Ni/SiO 2 catalysts is an attractive method of converting CO 2 and storing renewable energy, where the Ni particle size and dispersion are decisive factors governing activity, selectivity, and durability. Here, fluidized bed atomic layer deposition (FB-ALD) was used to construct size-controlled and well-dispersed Ni nanoparticles on SiO 2 sub-microparticles for CO 2 methanation. The growth characteristics and properties of Ni nanoparticles with different ALD cycles and the methanation behaviors of Ni/SiO 2 catalysts were investigated. The results showed that adjusting the number of ALD cycles enabled precise control of both the Ni loading (2.1–6.6 wt%) and the particle size (1.2–3.0 nm) in the FB-ALD process, while ensuring uniform dispersion on the SiO 2 support. The 60ALD-Ni/SiO 2 catalyst, containing 6.6 wt% Ni, delivered 81.4% CO 2 conversion and 98.4% CH 4 selectivity at 360 °C and 0.1 MPa. The catalyst also retained stable performance during a 100-hour continuous test, with negligible coke formation and limited Ni sintering. Hence, FB-ALD is a scalable and precise platform for designing active, durable, and low-metal-loading Ni/SiO 2 methanation catalysts.
