Mesoporous Metal–Metalloid Amorphous Alloys: The First Synthesis of Open 3D Mesoporous Ni-B Amorphous Alloy Spheres via a Dual Chemical Reduction Method

Yunqing Kang,Joel Henzie,Huajun Gu,Jongbeom Na,Amanullah Fatehmulla,Belqes Saeed A. Shamsan,Abdullah M. Aldhafiri,W. Aslam Farooq,Yoshio Bando,Toru Asahi,Bo Jiang,Hexing Li,Yusuke Yamauchi

Selective hydrogenation of nitriles is an industrially relevant synthetic route for the preparation of primary amines. Amorphous metal–boron alloys have a tunable, glass-like structure that generates a high concentration of unsaturated metal surface atoms that serve as active sites in hydrogenation reactions. Here, a method to create nanoparticles composed of mesoporous 3D networks of amorphous nickel–boron (Ni-B) alloy is reported. The hydrogenation of benzyl cyanide to β-phenylethylamine is used as a model reaction to assess catalytic performance. The mesoporous Ni-B alloy spheres have a turnover frequency value of 11.6 h −1 , which outperforms non-porous Ni-B spheres with the same composition. The bottom-up synthesis of mesoporous transition metal–metalloid alloys expands the possible reactions that these metal architectures can perform while simultaneously incorporating more Earth-abundant catalysts.

Preparation and Corrosion Resistance Study of Nano-La2O3 Reinforced Electroless Ni-B Coatings

Hongjie Li,Shaomu Wen,Yunqing Xia,Jizhong Yang,Chunyong Gu,Honglin Yang

HighlightsFabricate Ni-B/La2O3composite coatings by co-depositing nano-La2O3particles into an electroless Ni-B alloy matrix. The optimal concentration was determined to be 8 g·L−1, evidenced by the best anti-corrosion property. The results conclusively show that nano-La2O3reinforcement effectively enhances the corrosion resistance of electroless Ni-B alloy coatings. This study was conducted to explore how varying the concentration of nano-La2O3particles in the plating bath influences the morphology, constitution, and corrosion resistance of Ni-B composite coatings deposited on N80 carbon steel via electroless plating. The novelty of this work lies in the systematic investigation on the co-deposition behavior and grain refinement mechanism of nano-La2O3in electroless Ni-B system, which has been rarely reported in previous studies. The microstructure and chemical composition of the coatings were characterized through a combination of SEM, EDS, XPS and XRD analyses. SEM confirmed that a dense Ni-B/La2O3composite coating was formed, with a uniform thickness of approximately 10 μm, and the nano-La2O3particles were evenly distributed. XPS analysis verified the presence of B, C, O, Ni and La, while XRD analysis revealed a refinement in crystalline size due to the addition of the nanoparticles. The corrosion resistance enhancement mechanism is attributed to the triple synergistic effect: nano-La2O3pins grain boundaries and refines Ni-B grains to the minimum average size of 12.943 nm at the optimal concentration of 8 g·L−1; the refined grain structure promotes the formation of a continuous and dense Ni(OH)2passive film; the uniformly dispersed nanoparticles act as physical barriers to block the penetration of corrosive media. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated that this coating exhibited outstanding anti-corrosion performance, as confirmed by a remarkably positive corrosion potential (Ecorr= −0.37189 V) and a minimal corrosion current density (Icorr= 3.7524 μA/cm2). The results conclusively show that nano-La2O3reinforcement effectively enhances the corrosion protection performance of electroless Ni-B alloy coatings.

Jie Shao,Xuezhang Xiao,Xiulin Fan,Lixin Chen,Hongyi Zhu,Siqi Yu,Zhaodong Gong,Shouquan Li,Hongwei Ge,Qidong Wang

A novel method for the synthesis of amorphous Ni–B nanoparticles has been developed using a mechanochemical displacement reaction by high energy ball milling . Based on various characterizations including XRD , ICP, BET, DSC , SEM, TEM and XPS , the synthesized Ni–B amorphous nanoparticles are present in the form of uniform and homogeneously distributed ultrafine nanoparticles with the size around 5   nm. Larger specific surface area and higher thermal stability can be obtained by such mechanochemical method than the conventional wet-chemical reduction method. The present work provides a novel method for preparation of other amorphous nanoparticles, and greatly expands the industrial application space of Ni–B amorphous nanoparticles.

A comparison of ZrO2 nanoparticle reinforced Ni–W, Ni–B and Ni–Cu matrix nanocomposites

Weiwei Zhang,Cuicui Ji,Qiang Fu,Zhongquan Shi

In this work, the structure and properties of ZrO2 nanoparticle reinforced Ni–W, Ni–B and Ni–Cu matrix nanocomposite coatings were comparatively studied. Their surface morphology, composition, microstructure, topography, hardness, wear and corrosion resistance were examined by various methods . The nanocomposites exhibit dense, nodular-like morphology with nanocrystalline structure. The results show that the ZrO2 particles have homogeneously dispersed in the nanocomposites. The formation of the protrusion structure was partly attributed to the heterogeneous distribution of the electric field. The presence of ZrO2 nanoparticles could refine the crystallite size of the Ni–W, Ni–B and Ni–Cu alloy matrix to 12.5 ± 1, 10.5 ± 0.5 and 15 ± 0.1 nm, respectively. The corrosion resistance of these nanocomposites can be improved by the incorporation of ZrO2 nanoparticles into the alloy matrix. The Ra of Ni–W/ZrO2, Ni–B/ZrO2 and Ni–Cu/ZrO2 nanocomposites are about 53 ± 3, 69 ± 2, 18 ± 1 nm, respectively, expressing the rougher surface of Ni–B/ZrO2 compared to the others. It indicated that the composition of these alloy matrix have different crystallite size, which could affect the surface roughness of the electrodeposits. The inclusion of ZrO2 particles in Ni-based alloys could enhance its properties. The reinforcement effect of the anti-wear properties of the nanocomposites was proposed. The Rct value of the Ni–W–ZrO2, Ni–B–ZrO2, Ni–Cu–ZrO2 were 50.93, 105.18, 44.67 kΩ · cm2, respectively, indicating that the Ni–B–ZrO2 nanocomposite coating has the highest corrosion resistance. The Rct values depends on not only the composition of the coatings, but also the electrodeposition conditions, which influence the crystallize size and compactness of the electrodeposits. The order of the microhardness and anti-wear properties is Ni–W–ZrO2 > Ni–B–ZrO2 > Ni–Cu–ZrO2.

Unveiling the multifunctional role of Zn on Ni-B catalyst for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Shuo You,Cong Chen,Zhihe Wei,Qiang Wang,Wen Dong,Mingrong Shen,Ronglei Fan

Transition metal borides (TMBs) are considered promising electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but their potential has not been effectively utilized due to their inherent activity and challenges in fine morphology regulation during chemical/electrochemical deposition processes. Here, we prepared Zn incorporated NiB catalyst (NZB) on nickel foam by a simple one-step chemical deposition combined with local dealloying method. It was revealed that Zn incorporation plays a multifunctional role in the activity and stability of NZB catalysts towards alkaline HER. The partial leaching of Zn regulated the microstructure of the NZB, while residual Zn optimized the electronic structure of the NZB catalyst, improving the interaction between the catalyst and HER intermediates, thereby simultaneously increasing the number of active sites and intrinsic activity. Furthermore, we found the introduction of Zn accelerated the completion of surface reconstruction and improved the crystallinity of catalysts, resulting in enhanced chemical and mechanical stability. These findings provide key insights into maximizing the potential of transition metal-based catalysts for HER.

A novel synthetic strategy for hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene containing high cis-1,4 contents based on a Ni(II)-coordinated anionic initiating system

Xin Min

In this study, novel hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) with a high cis-1,4 content was developed using a tert-butyl dimethyl siloxy dimethyl propyl lithium (Li)–naphthenate nickel (Ni)–boron trifluoride (B) initiating system (Li–Ni–B). The effects of the material ratio and the addition sequence on the cis-1,4 content and molecular weight of HTPB were studied, and the results were discussed. The optimal Li/Ni ratio was 10 : 1, and the optimal Li/B ratio was 1 : 2. HTPB prepared by the Li–Ni–B system was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy, and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR) spectroscopy. The results suggested high cis-1,4 contents in HTPB synthesized using Li–Ni–B (cis-1,4 > 95%). The comparison of the cis-1,4 contents in the HTPB samples obtained by anionic polymerization and the Li–Ni–B system revealed the advantages of the latter compared to the former.

Highly Selective Electrooxidation of Urea to Nitrogen on Copper/Nickel Boride Interface under Alkaline Condition

Zhichao Shen,Yanbin Qi,Wangxin Ge,Hongliang Jiang,Chunzhong Li

Urea electrooxidation reaction (UOR) plays an important role in environmental protection and energy regeneration. The extensively studied nickel-based catalysts exhibit good activity for UOR, but urea is more prone to be overelectrooxidized to another pollutant NOx– (x = 2, 3). Herein, the Cu/Ni-B interface catalyst is presented. The introduction of Cu significantly enhances the Faradaic efficiency of N2 (nearly 70% at 1.70 V versus RHE). Electrochemical tests and in situ Raman spectroscopy results show that the introduction of Cu significantly affects the density of OH* species on the catalyst in the UOR process. It is proposed that with a moderate decrease in OH* density, the catalyst can provide enough sites for urea molecules to allow simultaneous adsorption of the two N atoms, facilitating the process of N-N coupling to form N2. This work is also instructive for the design of electrocatalysts for other nucleophile electrooxidation reactions.

Adsorbate- and Dopant-Engineered Active Nanostructure Derived from Ordered Er-Ni-B Intermetallics Boosts Alkaline Oxygen Evolution

Rikai Liang,Laiwei Zhang,Chuhan Dai,Shouyu Yao,Xiaotong Li,Kui Yin,Jiaxin Xu,Guoliang Dai,Zhenhui Kang,Ziliang Chen

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains the efficiency bottleneck of alkaline water electrolysis for carbon-neutral hydrogen. Herein, we propose a synergy strategy that couples p−d−f block elements within an intermetallic phase to deploy an ordered ternary ErNi4B alloy, which functions as a self-reconstructing precatalyst for the OER. Operando Raman, differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS), depth-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density-functional theory (DFT) uncover that in situ conversion from ErNi4B to Er-doped NiOOH adsorbed with borate ions during the OER yields an active shell operating via the adsorbate-evolution mechanism, while the metallic core preserves high conductivity, cooperatively optimizing the adsorption free energy of intermediates and suppressing the leaching of active Ni species. Benefiting from these aspects, the precatalyst demands only 338 mV to deliver 500 mA cm−2 and sustains industrial current density higher than 600 mA cm−2 for 1000 h. Meanwhile, it also showed high potential as an anode for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis. These findings redefine the shell-active/bulk-conductive paradigm and offer a general stoichiometric-phase roadmap to design ultrastable and non-precious OER precatalysts toward carbon-neutral hydrogen.

Polymer hydrogel supported Pd–Ni–B nanoclusters as robust catalysts for hydrogen production from hydrolysis of sodium borohydride

Wenyu Liu,Haokun Cai,Ping Lu,Qiumei Xu,Yafeng Zhongfu,Jian Dong

Catalyzed sodium borohydride hydrolysis is a highly valuable method to produce clean hydrogen energy for portable applications. This study provides a new and fast route to preparation of reusable hybrid materials composed of nickel-boron based nanoclusters dispersed in nanoporous poly(acrylamide) hydrogels for catalyzed hydrogen production . Palladium was added to the Ni–B catalysts during chemical reduction under the protection of poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone). The resulting nanoclusters immobilized in the hydrogels were essentially alloy particles with uni-modal size distributions and average diameters ranging from ca . 4–8 nm. Pd exerted significant promoting effects on the activities of the Ni–B catalysts. The highest activity was achieved for Pd–Ni–B nanoclusters with a charge ratio of Pd/Ni = 1/20 in moles, which exhibited activity nearly twice that of a Ni–B catalyst and good recyclability for consecutive uses. The hydrogen production rates also increased with the decreasing particle sizes. The activation energy , enthalpy and entropy for the reaction were determined to be 31.10 kJ mol −1 , 28.39 kJ mol −1 and -45.22 J mol −1  K −1 , respectively. The activation energy is lower than that of previously reported polymer-stabilized Co(0), Fe(0), or Ni(0) nanoparticle catalysts.

Cu-Interlayer-Enhanced Flexible Porous Ni-B on Waste Polyester Fabric Electrode: Robust Electrocatalytic Performance Under Repeated Bending and Twisting

Guangya Hou,Siqi Chen,Jianli Zhang,Qiang Chen,Yiping Tang

The functional valorization of waste fabrics, particularly their conversion into flexible low-cost, high-performance electrodes, holds significant promise for resource sustainability and the development of advanced energy technologies. Here, a NiB/Cu/polyester fabric (PF) composite electrode was fabricated via two-step electroless plating on waste PF and was demonstrated as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation (MOR) and urea oxidation (UOR). The morphology, crystal structure, surface chemical state, and wettability of the electrodes were characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, and contact angle measurements. The Cu interlayer critically enhanced interfacial wettability, intrinsic catalytic activity and stability. At 0.8 V, the NiB/Cu/PF electrode delivered average current densities of 312 mA·cm−2for MOR and 288 mA·cm−2for UOR, outperforming NiB/PF by 27.9% and 9.1%, respectively. After 2000 accelerated degradation cycles with electrolyte renewal, MOR and UOR activities were retained at 91.6% and 105.0%, respectively. Remarkably, the Cu interlayer conferred exceptional mechanical–electrochemical robustness: following 100 sequential bending and twisting deformations, current density retention ranged from 84.6% to 96.7% across multiple test configurations. The Cu interlayer acted as a flexible stress buffer during mechanical deformation, effectively improving the adhesion between the coating and the substrate.

Fe3 +-doped PDA and phytic acid modified BN anchored with Co-Ni/B nanosheets for improved flame protection of waterborne epoxy coatings

Chunlin Chen,Zhikui Huang,Guoqing Xiao,Beibei Ren,Guirong Zhao,Shuang Qing,Ting Ma,Chunyan Chen,Chuanlin Mou

PDA@Fe was loaded onto BN surface, imparting abundant functional groups and enhancing carbonization performance. • High-phosphorus-content PA was grafted onto the BN/PDA@Fe surface to promote the cross-linking of the polymer into a char. • Co-Ni/B were uniformly loaded onto the BN/PDA@Fe surface to construct a hierarchical BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B flame retardant. • The nano-reinforcing agent combines high P-N-B content with Fe, Co, Ni to achieve synergistic flame retardancy. Boron nitride (BN) is regarded as an effective nano-flame retardant due to its high thermal stability and thermal shielding effect. Here, Fe 3+ -doped polydopamine (PDA@Fe) was first immobilized on the BN surface to provide abundant functional groups and enhance its catalytic carbonization capability. Subsequently, high-phosphorus phytic acid (PA) and cobalt-nickel borate nanosheets (Co-Ni/B) were loaded onto the BN/PDA@Fe surface to prepare the BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B composite flame-retardant material. Notably, this multi-level structured nano-reinforcer combines the synergistic flame-retardant effect of high P-N-B content with the highly efficient catalytic charring ability of multiple metal ions (Fe, Co, Ni). Notably, the BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B/EP composite coating achieved the lowest back surface temperature (167.9 °C) and exhibited the highest expansion height (25.2 mm) and expansion ratio (19.69), demonstrating its excellent thermal insulation performance. Furthermore, the BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B/EP composite coating exhibited the highest residual carbon content (29.9%) and the lowest smoke density (39.2%). This can be attributed to the strong catalytic pyrolysis effect of the multi-metal ions, which converts more pyrolysis intermediates into stable carbon, thereby increasing carbon residue while reducing smoke emissions. Microstructural analysis revealed a dense and intact carbon layer, providing strong support for its exceptional thermal protection performance. The successful preparation of this novel flame retardant, which combines high barrier properties, high phosphorus and nitrogen content, and multi-metal-catalyzed carbonization, offers a new approach for developing high-performance refractory coatings. Hydrogen Production from Chemical Looping Steam Reforming of Ethanol over Perovskite-Type Oxygen Carriers with Bimetallic Co and Ni B-Site Substitution

Lin Li,Bo Jiang,Zhehao Sun,Qian Zhang,Duyu Li,Dawei Tang

This paper describes the synthesis of a series of La1.4Sr0.6Ni1−xCoxO4perovskite OCs using co-precipitation method by employing Co and Ni as the B-site components of perovskite and the synergetic effect of Co doping on chemical looping reforming of ethanol. A variety of techniques including N2adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and H2temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) were employed to investigate the physicochemical properties of the fresh and used OCs. The activity and stability in chemical looping reforming were studied in a fixed bed reactor at 600 °C and a S/C ratio of three. The synergetic effect between Ni and Co was able to enhance the catalytic activity and improve the stability of perovskite OCs. La1.4Sr0.6Ni0.6Co0.4O4showed an average ethanol conversion of 92.4% and an average CO2/CO ratio of 5.4 in a 30-cycle stability test. Significantly, the H2yield and purity reached 11 wt.% and 73%, respectively. The Co doping was able to significantly improve the self-regeneration capability due to the increase in the number of oxygen vacancies in the perovskite lattice, thereby enhancing the sintering resistance. Moreover, Co promotion also contributes to the improved WGS activity. Keywords:chemical looping reforming;perovskite;Ni-Co synergy
