The growth of base-metal-based heterostructures on metal-free carriers is considered an effective strategy for designing low-cost high-efficiency hybrid electrocatalysts with electronic modulation for bifunctional hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as well as further overall water splitting (OWS). Herein, Ni/Ni 3 N heterostructures with regulable composition are grown in-situ on N-defective graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) through a novel ammonia-free topochemical self-nitridation route. Benefitting from the synergetic effect between Ni/Ni 3 N heterointerface and the strong support of g-C 3 N 4 carrier, the as-fabricated Ni/Ni 3 N/g-C 3 N 4 composite performs superior capacity toward both HER and OER in alkaline conditions. The optimal Ni/Ni 3 N/g-C 3 N 4 sample requires low overpotentials for HER (55 mV) and OER (253 mV) to drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , along with long-term durability. Furthermore, the constructed Ni/Ni 3 N/g-C 3 N 4 (+||−) electrolytic cell for alkaline OWS can afford a current density of 10 mA cm −2 under a voltage of 1.556 V with outstanding stability.

Highly efficient electro-oxidation of benzylamine to generate value-added chemicals coupled with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial but challenging. Herein, targeted regulation of the electronic states of Ni sites was realized via simple yet precise nitridation engineering. Benefiting from the insertion of N atoms into the Ni lattice, the Ni3N electrode exhibits superior activity, selectivity, and stability for the benzylamine oxidation reaction (BOR). Especially, under the industrially relevant current (∼250 mA), the Ni3N catalyst remains ∼95% selective for benzonitrile production, reaching 1.43 mmol h–1 cm–2. Experimental and theoretical findings reveal that the formation of Ni–N bonds upshifts the Ni d-band center and optimizes the electrophilic properties of Ni sites, which contributes to the adsorption and dehydrogenations process of benzylamine. Furthermore, due to the work function difference between Ni and Ni3N, a strong mutual interaction occurs at the heterogeneous interface for Ni-Ni3N, which endows it with the appropriate H* adsorption energy and thus excellent HER performance. Impressively, the integrated solar-energy-driven BOR coupled with the HER electrolyzer affords 10 mA cm–2 at an ultralow voltage of 1.4 V and exhibits a promising practical application (ηsolar-to-hydrogen = 13.8%). This work offers a new perspective for the bifunctional design of nitrides in the field of electrosynthesis.

Electrocatalytic water splitting is being considered an effective approach to address the increasing energy crises and environmental issues. But it still suffers from a lack of efficient and stable electrocatalysts. Developing electrocatalysts through an integration of defect engineering and heterojunction engineering could be a reliable solution for improved activity, stability, and practicability. In this context, a heterostructure of Ni 3 N/Mo 2 C@CP was synthesized using a facile hydrothermal method and two-step heating treatment, including carbonization and nitridation. Moreover, the defects were intentionally produced by zinc intermediate doping in Ni 3 N/Mo 2 C@CP. The ratio of Zn versus Ni and Mo metal precursor was gradually increased to optimize the defects in Ni 3 N/Mo 2 C@CP heterostructure for excellent HER performance. Eventually, the optimized defect-rich Ni 3 N/Mo 2 [email protected] heterostructure requires only a small overpotential of 65 mV to attain the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , indicating a remarkable HER performance. Apart from the HER activity, defect-rich Ni 3 N/Mo 2 [email protected] heterostructure exhibited long-term stability over 112 h for continuous electrochemical hydrogen production.

A heterostructured Ni@Ni 3 N/NCNTs electrocatalyst was rationally designed via a MOF-derived strategy combined with controlled surface nitridation to achieve highly efficient nonenzymatic glucose sensing. In this architecture, metallic Ni nanoparticles anchored on a three-dimensional N-doped carbon nanotube framework were selectively converted into a thin Ni 3 N surface layer, forming abundant Ni/Ni 3 N heterointerfaces while preserving a conductive Ni core. Electrochemical studies reveal that the engineered heterointerfaces significantly reduce charge-transfer resistance and increase electrochemically active surface area, thereby promoting the generation of NiOOH species and facilitating glucose oxidation. As a result, the Ni@Ni 3 N/NCNTs electrode exhibits a high sensitivity of 685.07 μA mM −1 cm −2 , a low detection limit of 0.34 μM, and a wide linear range of 1–7000 μM for nonenzymatic glucose detection. Furthermore, integration with a smartphone-enabled electrochemical platform enables portable and real-time glucose analysis, demonstrating the strong potential of this surface-engineered heterostructure for practical portable sensing applications.

Due to their importance for practical applications in energy conversion, resolving the kinetic issues of water-dissociation in alkaline media for Pt-based electrocatalysts remains an ongoing challenge. Herein, the electronic properties of Pt could be modified with a nickel nitride (Ni3N) support through forming an interface of a low ratio of Pt nanoclusters (Pt NCs) via a simple impregnation approach combined with nitridation. 1.5Pt@Ni3N-360 can offer excellent bifunctional performance for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) which is competitive with commercial IrO2 and Pt/C catalysts under alkaline media. It shows a low overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 (285 and 71 mV) and a small Tafel slope (57 and 48 mV dec−1) for OER and HER, respectively. The excellent bifunctional electrochemical activity of 1.5Pt@Ni3N-360 is due to the interface and synergetic effect between Ni3N and dispersed Pt clusters, which changes the electron distribution of the material, so that the hydrogen adsorption energy tends to the optimal value (ΔGH* ∼ 0). It is believed that the utilization of low-ratio Pt as an co-electrocatalyst with a variety of metal nitrides opens new horizons and opportunities to fabricate more efficient electrocatalysts for broad applications in energy-related devices.

Graphical Nano-structured materials for glycerol/glucose oxidation reaction : Herein, hollow-structured PW-NiCo-NC was synthesized from a POMOF precursor as a highly efficient and stable electrocatalyst for HER and glycerol/glucose oxidation reaction. Furthermore, it exhibits energy-efficient catalytic hydrogen production activity in an OWS cell assisted by glycerol/glucose oxidation reaction. The electrocatalytic conversion of water-to-hydrogen powered by renewable energy is one of the promising strategies to unravel the energy and environment crises. However, a such process usually costs large energy consumption owing to the low efficiency of anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is another vital half reaction of the overall water splitting (OWS) system. Herein, we designed and fabricated hollow nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages loaded with Ni 3 N and Co nanoparticles derived from polyoxometalate-encapsuled metal-organic frameworks. The catalyst exhibited appealing dual functions for both OER and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), outperforming the Ni-free and solid samples. Notably, the designed catalyst also showed much enhanced electrochemical performance for glycerol/glucose oxidation reaction when compared with OER. The home-made two-electrode electrolyzer, coupled HER with polyalcohol or glucose oxidation reaction, only needs cell voltages of 1.125 and 1.557 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 , respectively, which are much smaller than that in 1 M KOH (2.087 V), demonstrating a large amount of energy saving for hydrogen production.

A simple sol–gel thermolysis method has been utilized to prepare plate-like Ni3N films supported on nickel foam (Ni3N/NF) as electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The as-prepared samples have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),
scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). XRD shows a typically crystal phase of Ni3N on nickel foam. The broad peak of (100) suggests smaller particle size of Ni3N on NF. SEM images confirm that Ni3N films cover on the surface
of NF. Ni3N films are composed of many uniform nanoparticles, implying larger surface area and more exposed active sites. Electrochemical measurements show that Ni3N/NF exhibits superior OER activity with excellent stability, which can be attributed to more active sites
and the enhanced conductivity derived from NF as support. Ni3N/NF as electrocatalysts for OER may provide novel idea for preparing highly active electrocatalysts from non-noble metallic nitrides.

The hydrogen evolution performances of electrocatalysts are greatly restricted by their unfavorable hydrogen evolution kinetics and the undesirable accumulation of as-evolved gas bubbles on the electrocatalysts surface. Herein, we present the fabrication of self-supporting multi-heterointerfacial nanoarrays electrode toward addressing these challenges simultaneously. A monolith Ni 3 N/Ni@W 2 N 3 electrode is prepared, which exhibits a multi-heterojunction interface between the different components. The construction of this multi-heterojunction interface allows for the redistribution of the electrons, thus alleviating the strong Ni-H bond and optimizing the hydrogen adsorption free energy toward more efficient HER catalysis. Moreover, by virtue of the distinct nanoarray structure, the Ni 3 N/Ni@W 2 N 3 nanoarrays exhibit improved hydrophilicity and superaerophobicity compared with Ni/Ni 3 N, facilitating water contact and enabling more efficient detachment of the as-evolved H 2 bubbles from the surface. Benefiting from these attractive features, the Ni 3 N/Ni@W 2 N 3 nanoarrays deliver an attractive alkaline HER catalytic activity with a low overpotential of 66 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which is comparable with that of the benchmark Pt/C electrode. Moreover, the electrode exhibits remarkable stability during long-term electrolysis. The simultaneous interface and nanostructure engineering provide a feasible pathway for obtaining high-performance electrodes and beyond for various electrochemical reactions.

Facile electrodeposition-nitridation yields Ce-CoN/Ni 3 N heterostructured catalyst. • Ce tunes electronic structure and generates N vacancies to accelerate HER kinetics. • Ce activates lattice oxygen and drives reconstruction for dual AEM/LOM OER. • Symmetric flow electrolyzer achieves 500 mA cm −2 at 2.04 V over 500 h durability. The design of highly efficient and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting (OWS) is essential to realize a sustainable hydrogen economy. Heterojunction engineering can realize synergistic catalysis by coupling distinct active components, while the low activity at the interfaces needs further improvement by introducing elaborate elements. Herein, we constructed a Ce-modified CoN/Ni 3 N heterojunction catalyst via sequential electrodeposition and nitridation. The introduction of redox-active Ce modulates the interfacial electronic configuration and creates a high density of nitrogen vacancies (N v ), substantially boosting the bifunctional catalytic performance of Ce-CoN/Ni 3 N. The optimal catalyst requires overpotentials of only 27 mV and 267 mV to deliver 10 mA cm −2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH. A two-electrode flow electrolyzer equipped with Ce-CoN/Ni 3 N as bifunctional electrodes achieves a high industrial current density of 500 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of 2.04 V and maintains stable operation for 500 h. Mechanistic investigations reveal that Ce incorporation elevates the oxidation states of Ni and Co and promotes the generation of N v , which accelerates water dissociation and HER kinetics. Meanwhile, Ce incorporation facilitates surface reconstruction from β -NiOOH to the more active γ -NiOOH phase and activates lattice oxygen, enabling cooperative adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) pathways that collectively enhance OER kinetics. This study reveals that heterointerface engineering offers an effective and feasible strategy for creating highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts toward practical water electrolysis. Precious metals (Pt, Ir, Ru, and so on) and related compounds usually demonstrate superb catalytic activity for electrochemical hydrogen production. However, scarcity and stability are still challenges for hydrogen evolution reaction, even for single-atomic-site electrocatalysts. Herein, a fluorine (F) doping strategy is proposed to enhance the strong metal–support interaction between the F-doped Ni3N support and the loaded ruthenium (Ru) species. Via synergistically modulating both the Ru loading amount and F doping concentration, outstanding HER activity was achieved in Ru@F–Ni3N with an overpotential (η) of 115 mV at 100 mA cm–2, superior to the benchmark Pt/C (η = 201 mV). Density functional theory simulation in combination with X-ray photoelectron spectra and X-ray absorption spectroscopy characterizations convincingly demonstrate that, with the strongest electronegativity, F doping could effectively stabilize Ru atoms doped in the F–Ni3N substrate and simultaneously reduce the H bonding strength, which accelerated the desorption of H2. These findings provide a facile strategy to modulate both catalytic activities and stabilities of heteroatom-loaded catalytic materials.

The mass transfer efficiency and structural stability of the electrode are critical for industrialized water electrolysis operations. Herein, the biomimicry-inspired design of Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF nanoarrays with a fish scale-like structure, which endowed the Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF nanoarrays with rapid infiltration of aqueous solution within 60 ms and 169° bubble contact angle, is demonstrated. The optimal Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF sample displayed catalytic activity with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotentials of only 48 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and 102 mV at 100 mA cm−2. Similarly, the overpotential of the anodic-coupled urea oxidation reaction (UOR) was only 1.3 V at 10 mA cm−2 and 1.35 V at 100 mA cm−2. Besides, the small impact resulting from the rapid bubble extraction within the Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF nanoarrays ensured excellent HER cycling stability over 100 h at a current density of 50 mA cm−2. The further scale-up experiment suggests the industrialization prospects of the prepared Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF electrocatalysts.

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) represents the largest-scale green hydrogen production technology, but faces critical challenges: commercial Raney nickel electrodes exhibit insufficient catalytic activity, severe dissolution during intermittent renewable operations, and require energy-intensive fabrication processes. Here, we develop Ni 3 N/Ni heterostructured electrodes with enhanced adhesion and optimized morphology through induction heating and ammonia reduction. The electrodes demonstrate superior energy conversion performance with uniform morphology, enhanced hydrophilicity, and optimized gas management, resulting in enlarged electrochemical active surface area and reduced hydrogen evolution overpotential (η 100 = 141 mV). Single-cell evaluation reveals a current density of 585 mA/cm 2 at 1.8 V with operational stability exceeding 1500 h. Critically, nitridation enhances both catalytic activity and corrosion resistance, enabling reliable operation during frequent start-stop cycles. These findings address critical challenges in AWE and facilitate efficient integration between renewable energy and green hydrogen production.
