Transition metal compounds have garnered significant attention due to their high specific surface area, tunable composition, and synergistic effects. These materials exhibit excellent electrochemical performance, making them some of the most promising candidates for pseudocapacitive applications. Herein, cobalt selenide (CoSe), nickel selenide (NiSe), and trinickel diselenide (Ni 3 Se 2 ) nanosheets were grown on nickel foam using a simple two-step hydrothermal method. The three-dimensional network structure of the CoSe/NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 @NF composite material provides a larger specific surface area and more electrochemically active sites. This architecture facilitates rapid electron transfer, enhances electrochemical performance, and results in a high specific capacitance of 2300.65 F· g −1 at a current density of 1 A· g −1 . The asymmetric supercapacitor device, assembled with CoSe/NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 @NF as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, demonstrates an energy density of 63.16 Wh·kg −1 at a power density of 805.73 W·kg −1 . These outstanding electrochemical properties suggest that CoSe/NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 @NF composite materials hold great potential as an energy storage material.

Highly efficient, cost-effective, and durable electrocatalysts are crucial for scalable renewable hydrogen production via water electrolysis. Herein, a Ni 3 Se 2 –Mo@NiFe-LDH composite catalyst was synthesized through a hierarchical strategy combining two-step hydrothermal treatment and electrodeposition. The catalyst exhibits outstanding OER performance, delivering a low overpotential of 205 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and stable operation for 200 h. In this heterostructure, the conductive Ni 3 Se 2 core promotes electron transport, while the in-situ formed NiMoO 4 phase regulates the electronic structure to optimize oxygen intermediate adsorption. Meanwhile, the NiFe-LDH shell undergoes surface reconstruction during operation, forming an active oxyhydroxide layer that activates the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM). Operando Raman spectroscopy and post-stability analyses (XPS, SEM, ICP-OES) verify the formation of the active phase and preserved structural integrity. The synergistic effects of electronic modulation and interfacial engineering accelerate charge transfer and reduce OER kinetic barriers, offering an effective strategy for developing high-performance non-precious-metal OER catalysts.

Tailoring the nonprecious nickel selenide heterogeneous electrocatalysts with controllable morphology and electronic structures is of prime importance to enhance the catalytic efficiency for hydrogen production evolution (HER). Here, we report the solvothermal in-situ synthesis of vanadium-incorporated NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 heterogeneous structures (VNS) on porous nickel foam, which function as an efficient electrode toward HER, together with superior catalytic activity and durability. Impressively, the self-assembled VNS electrode delivers the current densities of 100, 500 and 1000 mA cm −2 at quite low overpotentials of 175, 275 and 348 mV with 85% iR -compensation toward HER in 1.0 M KOH solution. Mott-Schottky analysis indicates that the vanadium doping alters the flat band potential of VNS, and in turn affects the electrons migration behavior at electrode and electrolyte interface. Benefiting from its dramatically increased catalytic active sites exposure, enhanced charge transport capability, and optimized electronic structure, the hierarchical VNS heterostructures exhibit an impressive HER electrocatalytic performance in alkaline media. More broadly, this research provides a promising strategy for design and exploitation of more advanced electrocatalysts for large-scale hydrogen production on selenides using heteroatom vanadium incorporation.

The development of relatively inexpensive and highly active electrocatalyst for water splitting is essential to the energy conversion and sustainable economic improvement. In this work, based on nanostructure engineering, the CoSe 2 -Ni 3 Se 2 nanoparticles coated Co(CO 3 ) 0.5 (OH)·0.11H 2 O nanoneedles supported on the surface of Ni foam (NF) composite (CoSe 2 -Ni 3 Se 2 /NF) had been synthesized by a facile hydrothermal selenization method. Benefiting from the adequate nanostructure and moderate degree of selenization treatment, the obtained sample CoSe 2 -Ni 3 Se 2 /NF-0.4 using 0.4 g Se powder as selenium source shows remarkable electrocatalytic performance and electrochemical stability for either hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) or oxygen evolution reaction (OER). CoSe 2 -Ni 3 Se 2 /NF-0.4 only required 98 mV (vs. RHE) to reach the 10 mA cm −2 for HER and 344 mV (vs. RHE) to reach 100 mA cm −2 for OER in 1.0 M KOH solution. This work provides a simple strategy to controllably synthesize transitional metal diselenium-based electrocatalyst with adjustable amount of active phase, which are very important for the future development of the bifunctional electrocatalyst.
