Ni3S2@Ni5P4 nanosheets as highly productive catalyst for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Shahid Khan,Tariq Ali,Xianfu Wang,Waseem Iqbal,Tariq Bashir,Wang Chao,He Sun,Hauliang Lu,Chenglin Yan,Rana Muhammad Irfan

The development of cheap and effective catalysts is one of the major challenges to boost up electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, we synthesized phosphorus incorporated nickel sulfide (Ni 3 S 2 @Ni 5 P 4 /NF) composite via a simple one-step hydrothermal treatment for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction in basic media. The newly synthesized Ni 3 S 2 @Ni 5 P 4 /NF composite catalyst shows a remarkable OER activity with an overpotential of 399 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm −2 . Ni 3 S 2 @Ni 5 P 4 /NF also shows a Tafel slope of 75 mV dec -1 with long-term stability for more than 15 h in alkaline media. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity of current system is among best catalysts based on Nickle sulfides and nickel phosphides according to our knowledge. Current enhancement can be attributed to fast electron transfer due to synergistic effect of Ni 3 S 2 and Ni 5 P 4 in the composite.

Free-standing porous Ni2P-Ni5P4 heterostructured arrays for efficient electrocatalytic water splitting

Yaotian Yan,Jinghuang Lin,Kai Bao,Tianxiong Xu,Junlei Qi,Jian Cao,Zhengxiang Zhong,Weidong Fei,Jicai Feng

Constructing heterointerfaces in heterostructures could effectively enlarge the electroactive sites and enhance the interfacial charge transfer, and thus improve the electrocatalytic performances. Herein, free-standing porous Ni 2 P-Ni 5 P 4 heterostructured arrays are successfully prepared through in situ phosphating Ni(OH) 2 arrays by simply tuning the reaction temperatures. Contributing from the interfacial coupling effects of two phases, large surface areas, highly conductive support of carbon cloth substrates and unique free-standing arrays, Ni 2 P-Ni 5 P 4 heterostructured arrays show the enhanced kinetics and electrocatalytic performances for the hydrogen evolution reaction , oxygen evolution reaction and overall water splitting. Our research might offer insight into constructing heterophase junctions for efficient overall water splitting.

Facile synthesis of Ni5P4 nanosheets/nanoparticles for highly active and durable hydrogen evolution

Anyin Chen,Liang Fu,Wenjun Xiang,Wei Wei,Dan Liu,Changlu Liu

It is essential to search highly active, steady and cheap non-noble electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). At present, nickel phosphides are extensively used in electrochemical hydrogen evolution due to its excellent stability and activity. Hence, we report a facile, effective and feasible strategy to synthesis of Ni 5 P 4 nanosheets/nanoparticles structure on carbon cloth, which was fabricated by electroless nickel plating on carbon cloth followed via straightforward thermal phosphidation treatment with NaH 2 PO 2 as phosphorus source. The as-prepared CC@Ni–P electrocatalyst exhibits HER activity with low overpotentials (93 mV vs. RHE) to attain current density 10 mA/cm 2 as well as small Tafel slope (58.2 mV/dec), which outperforms most nickel phosphides electrocatalysts. The excellent HER performance can be ascribed to the large electrochemically active surface area, and phosphorus-rich Ni 5 P 4 phase can supply further bridges sites of Ni and P. Significantly, as-prepared CC@Ni–P catalyst electrode exhibits no apparent HER activity decay after continuous stability test. Beyond that, the approach can be readily used to fabricate large size (5 × 5 cm) nickel phosphide electrocatalyst with excellent HER performance, which may be conducive to the proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyser applications in future. This work opens an effective way to construct excellent performance transition-metal phosphides for HER.

ZnFe2O4–Ni5P4 Mott–Schottky Heterojunctions to Promote Kinetics for Advanced Li–S Batteries

Dan Zhang,Yixin Luo,Jiaxiang Liu,Yu Dong,Cong Xiang,Chenke Zhao,Hongbo Shu,Jianhua Hou,Xianyou Wang,Manfang Chen

The practical progress of lithium–sulfur batteries is hindered by the serious shuttle effect and the slow oxidation–reduction kinetics of polysulfides. Herein, the ZnFe2O4–Ni5P4 Mott–Schottky heterojunction material is prepared to address these issues. Benefitting from a self-generated built-in electric field, ZnFe2O4–Ni5P4 as an efficient bidirectional catalysis regulates the charge distribution at the interface and accelerates electron transfer. Meanwhile, the synergy of the strong adsorption capacity derived from metal oxides and the outstanding catalytic performance that comes from metal phosphides strengthens the adsorption of polysulfides, reduces the energy barrier during the reaction, accelerates the conversion between sulfur species, and further accelerates the reaction kinetics. Hence, the cell with ZnFe2O4–Ni5P4/S harvests a high discharge capacity of 1132.4 mAh g–1 at 0.5C and displays a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.3% after 700 cycles. The ZnFe2O4–Ni5P4/S battery still maintains a capacity of 610.1 mAh g–1 with 84.4% capacity retention after 150 cycles at 0.1C under a high sulfur loading of 3.2 mg cm–2. This work provides a favorable reference and advanced guidance for developing Mott–Schottky heterojunctions in lithium–sulfur batteries.

Charge Redistribution via d–p Hybridization in NiCoP Supported on Ni5P4 Boosts Alkaline Hydrogen Production

Junjie Hu,Yan Sang,Jingwei Xue,Rui Zhang,Lingmei Zhou,Ziqing Meng,Tianchen Ma,Lijuan Chen

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) are promising electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but their industrial-scale application is limited by sluggish water dissociation kinetics and insufficient active site exposure under alkaline conditions. Herein, we demonstrate orbital hybridization engineering in Ni5P4/NiCoP-1 heterostructures fabricated via controlled phosphorization and magnetically modulated electrodeposition (MME). COMSOL simulations, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the heterointerface activates covalent Ni/Co–P bonding through optimized d–p orbital hybridization, leading to favorable electron density redistribution and an upshifted d-band center (ΔE = 0.061 eV). These electronic modifications synergistically enhance OH– adsorption energetics and accelerate water dissociation kinetics. Simultaneously, the strengthened metal–phosphorus bonds endow exceptional corrosion resistance under chloride-rich seawater conditions. As a result, Ni5P4/NiCoP-1 achieves excellent HER performance, requiring ultralow overpotentials of 266 and 325 mV to achieve a current density of 1000 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH and seawater at pH 14, respectively, while maintaining stable operation for 200 h. In a two-electrode electrolyzer, the system requires only 1.62 V to reach 100 mA cm–2 in urea-assisted alkaline seawater, surpassing most reported TMP-based catalysts. The practical applicability is further verified by successfully powering a hydrogen-powered prototype vehicle. This work not only provides mechanistic insights into interfacial electronic structure modulation via d–p orbital hybridization but also establishes MME as a universal approach for high-rate hydrogen production from alkaline freshwater and seawater.

Metal - organic frameworks derived Ni5P4/NC@CoFeP/NC composites for highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Ruru Fu,Qingze Jiao,Xueting Feng,Huanhuan Zhu,Chao Yang,Caihong Feng,Hansheng Li,Yaoyuan Zhang,Daxin Shi,Qin Wu,Yun Zhao

As an efficient non-precious metal catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), phosphides suffer from poor electrical conductivity , so it is still a challenge to reasonably design their structures to further improve their conductivity and OER performances. Here, we present a novel Ni 5 P 4 / N -doped carbon@CoFeP/ N -doped carbon composite (Ni 5 P 4 /NC@CoFeP/NC) as electrocatalysts for OER. This elaborate structure consists of Ni 5 P 4 /NC derived from Ni-MOF and CoFeP/NC derived from CoFe-Prussian blue analog MOF (Co-Fe PBA). The cube-like CoFeP/NC are scattered and uniformly coated on the sheet of Ni 5 P 4 /NC flowers. Among them, NC can enhance the conductivity of phosphides, while CoFeP/NC can increase the electrochemical active area, which benefit the properties of Ni 5 P 4 /NC@CoFeP/NC. Notably, the Ni 5 P 4 /NC@CoFeP/NC catalyst possesses outstanding OER performances with a low overpotential of 260 and 303 mV at a current density of 10 and 100 mA·cm −2 , an ultra-low Tafel slope of 31.1 mV·dec -1 and excellent stability in 1 M KOH. XPS analysis shows that proper chemical composition promotes the oxidation of transition metal species and the chemisorption of OH – , thus accelerating the OER kinetics. Therefore, this work provides a hopeful method for designing and preparing transition metal phosphide/carbon composite as OER electrocatalysts.

Alkaline water electrolysis offers a promising route for large-scale hydrogen production, but its efficiency is limited by the sluggish kinetics of both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we designed a hierarchical composite electrocatalyst comprising iridium-doped nickel-cobalt phosphide nanoparticles (Ir-NiCoP/Ni5P4) encapsulated within nickel-iron layered double hydroxide nanosheets (NiFe-LDH). Oxygen vacancies (OV) were engineered on the surface via sodium borohydride reduction, yielding an optimized catalyst denoted as Ir-NiCoP/Ni5P4@NiFe-LDH-1-OV. The optimized catalyst delivers low overpotentials of 52.7 mV for HER and 197.3 mV for OER at 10 mA cm-2 and maintains remarkable stability over 100 h for overall water splitting. Moreover, the Ir-NiCoP/Ni5P4@NiFe-LDH catalyst exhibits overpotentials of 76.7 and 101.3 mV for HER and the ammonia oxidation reaction A in 1 M KOH + NH3·H2O, respectively.

Three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical coral-like Mn-doped Ni2P–Ni5P4/NF catalyst for efficient oxygen evolution

Siran Xu,Yeshuang Du,Xian Liu,Xin Yu,Chunlin Teng,Xiaohong Cheng,Yunfeng Chen,Qi Wu

Developing earth-abundant and high-efficient catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to enhance the efficiency of water splitting is highly desirable. Metal-doping and construction of heterogeneous structure are two start-of-the-art strategies to increase the OER activity of transition metal materials. In this work, we exhibit the design and construction of a unique coral-like 3D hierarchical Mn-doped Ni 2 P–Ni 5 P 4 /NF (Mn–Ni–P/NF) OER catalyst. The Mn-doped Ni 2 P–Ni 5 P 4 /NF hybrid catalyst is synthesized on Ni foam by hydrothermal and followed in situ phosphidation, which exhibits superior OER catalytic performance with an overpotential of 230 mV (vs. RHE) at a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 and 70 mV lower than Ni 2 P–Ni 5 P 4 /NF (300 mV). Furthermore, it also exhibits good long-term stability for 20 h. This work provides a good thought named metal-doping transition metal phosphide complexes to improve the catalytic activity for OER. Such a superior OER performance is main attributed to the unique morphology, the doping of metal Mn regulating the metal phosphide Ni 2 P–Ni 5 P 4 nanosheet structure to be a 3D rough high-active-sites nanorod structure with the in situ formed oxidized Ni species on the surface and effective composite nanostructures .

Synthesis of Ni2P/Ni5P4 on porous N decorated rGO foam for efficiently electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Qing Xu,Linlin Zang,Ziying Li,Fengtong Shen,Yanhong Zhang,Liguo Sun

As a new generation of non-precious metal catalysts , nickel phosphide is regarded as an ideal substitute for precious metal platinum in electrochemical hydrogen evolution . Here, a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst is developed by in situ growth of Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 heterostructures on porous N decorated rGO foam (named Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 /N-rGO). The porous rGO foam structure provides a larger surface area and abundant active sites. The Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 nanoparticles with heterostructures are uniformly distributed on the rGO sheet, which enhance the charge transfer ability. The decorating of N element also correspondingly improves the HER performance. The as-prepared Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 /N-rGO exhibits excellent HER performance in alkaline medium . When the current density is 10 mA cm −2 , the overpotential is only 22 mV. No obvious loss of HER activity after 2000 cyclic voltammetry indicates that the composite has excellent stability. This work presents a valuable route for fabricating inexpensive and high-performance catalysts for electrocatalysis .

Manganese phosphoxide/Ni5P4 hybrids as an anode material for high energy density and rate potassium-ion storage

Sen Yang,Ting Li,Yiwei Tan

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) that serve as low-cost and large-scale secondary batteries are regarded as promising alternatives and a supplement to lithium-ion batteries. Hybrid active materials feature the synergistic merits of individual components to overcome the sluggish kinetics of K+ insertion and structural deterioration of electrodes for PIBs. We report herein that a highly stable hybrid anode active material, an amorphous MnOxPy (a-MnOxPy) overlayer coating on a Ni5P4 film, is grown on carbon fabric cloth (CF) through a phosphidation reaction to obtain the integrated a-MnOxPy/Ni5P4/CF anode by simple phosphidation treatment. The optimized a-MnOxPy/Ni5P4/CFP anode delivers a high reversible specific depotassiation capacity of 398.8 mA h g−1 at 0.3 A g−1 after 100 cycles and acquires an excellent rate capability together with high cycling stability with capacities of 225.1 and 175.3 mA h g−1 at 5 and 10 A g−1 after 5000 cycles, respectively. The amorphous a-MnOxPy-45 overlayer and the porous features of the a-MnOxPy-45/Ni5P4 provide sufficient stress buffer and thus greatly accommodate large volume changes during potassiation/depotassiation. The hybrid interface between a-MnOxPy and Ni5P4 and favorable conductivity of the formed phosphides promote the charge transport and K+ storage kinetics. Also, the a-MnOxPy/Ni5P4/CF//K4Fe(CN)6 PIB full cell exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 343.9 mA h g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and maintains 331.9 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles.

Iron-Doped Ni5P4 Ultrathin Nanoporous Nanosheets for Water Splitting and On-Demand Hydrogen Release via NaBH4 Hydrolysis

Tiange Ma,Yunfeng Qiu,Yuanyuan Zhang,Xinyang Ji,Ping-An Hu

The search for efficient overall water-splitting electrocatalysts plays an important role for low-cost hydrogen production. Metal phosphides are promising for integrating hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) properties in one bifunctional electrode, but several challenges still exist and need to be solved. We report a free-standing carbon cloth electrode consisting of iron (Fe)-doped Ni5P4 nanosheet arrays via a hydrothermal reaction and subsequent phosphorization, which effectively drives both HER and OER in the base. The as-prepared Fe-doped Ni5P4 with ultralow Fe conent (2.5 atom %) delivers a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at 131 mV for HER and needs 257 mV to reach a current density of 100 mA cm–2 for OER. Overall, water splitting requires only 1.50 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm–2. The introduction of trace Fe in Ni5P4 is effective to modulate the adsorption energy of the key intermediates for both HER and OER, which is promising for the rational design of transition-metal phosphides based on bifunctional water-splitting catalysts with high performance. In particular, Fe-doped Ni5P4 could effectively catalyze the hydrolysis of NaBH4 with a hydrogen generation rate of 0.175 L g–1 min–1 and an activation energy of 53.41 kJ mol–1, comparable to most transition-metal-based electrocatalysts.

Interfacial electronic structure modulation of Ni2P/Ni5P4 heterostructure nanosheets for enhanced pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction performance

Chaojie Lyu,Chenyang Cao,Jiarun Cheng,Yuquan Yang,Kaili Wu,Jiwen Wu,Woon-Ming Lau,Ping Qian,Ning Wang,Jinlong Zheng

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) are regarded as the underlying substitutes to Pt-based catalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but the poor electrical conductivity and limited catalytic activity severely hinder its employment. Interface engineering is an available arrangement to enhance the catalytic activity of TMPs for HER process. The interface−engineered Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 heterostructure porous nanosheets was developed by a simple solvothermal method and a controllable low−temperature phosphorization treatment. Combining UPS characterization with DOS simulation, we disclose the existence of built-in electric field at interface region, and the electrons is transferred from Ni 2 P to Ni 5 P 4 side. The DFT calculation results indicate that the active sites at interface domain possess the optimal H* adsorption free energy and lowest H 2 O dissociation energy barrier compared with single-phased Ni 2 P and Ni 5 P 4 , which is contributed to the electrons redistribution and electronic structure optimization, thereby enhancing the HER catalytic activity of Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 heterostructure nanosheets. The experimental results show it exhibits excellent HER performance in universal pH range. It merely requires the overpotentials of 78, 100, and 62 mV to achieve 10 mA/cm 2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , 1 M PBS, and 1 M KOH electrolytes, respectively. Assembled with NiFeCH anode, we fabricated NiFeCH || Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 electrolyzer, which only needs the voltage of 1.52 V to achieve current density of 10 mA/cm 2 in 1 M KOH. Even in complicated seawater system, the electrode and the electrolyzer still display outstanding electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen production. This report supplies an efficient strategy to enhance the electrolytic performance for hydrogen production from water splitting.
