3D hierarchical nanostructured NiCo-LDH/Cu electrode for efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution

Shixuan Wang,Liuyan Zhang,Chenrui Shi,Zeyi Guan,Gengzhe Shen,Guibin Tan,Yanmei Zhang

The development of an efficient and cost-effective electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) that can be widely applied in industrial settings poses a multifaceted challenge. This research involved fabricating a NiCo-LDH/Cu electrode as a self-supported catalyst for hydrogen evolution on nickel foam using a solvothermal method and constant potential electrodeposition. In comparison to the NiCu electrocatalyst produced through a single-step electrodeposition, the NiCo-LDH/Cu hydrogen evolution electrode prepared via this combined approach exhibited significant electrocatalytic performance for HER in an alkaline electrolyte. The NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode requires only an overpotential of 78.0 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 in 1 M KOH. The current density required to catalyze the hydrogenation reaction is reduced by 64 % compared to pure nickel foam. This reduction accelerates the hydrogenation catalytic reaction and enhances electrochemical stability. The remarkable HER efficiency of the NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode primarily stems from the increased active surface area facilitated by the LDH structure and the synergistic impact generated during the NiCu co-deposition process. This work shows an economical and practical method for developing efficient non-precious metal catalytic electrodes.

Synthesis and characterization of two-faced brush-like MXene anchored NiCo-LDH electrode for high-performance supercapacitors

Miao Sun,Yanan Wang,Jaka Sunarso,Xiuxia Meng,Weimin Zhang,Jun Cao,Naitao Yang

Layered nickel‑cobalt double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) with a high theoretical charge storage capacity has great potential to be used as a supercapacitor (SC) electrode. However, its low electronic conductivity, low stability, and aggregation tendency has been recognized as the main drawbacks. Herein, solvent-induced interfacial-confined process was used to synthesize an unusual brush-like heterostructure of NiCo-LDH vertically anchored on conductive MXene nanosheets, enabled by the solvent-induced effect of the polar hydroxyl group of ethylene glycol and the limited domain effect of MXene nanosheets. This unique brush-like structure promoted mass transfer and improves charge transport behaviours compared to the pure NiCo-LDHs. The resultant NiCo-LDH@MXene had an ideal larger peak pore size of 3.8 nm and BET specific surface area of 175.13 m 2  g −1 compared to those of NiCo-LDH, which facilitates the exposure of active sites and mass transfer. In three-electrode configuration, NiCo-LDH@MXene provided a significant specific capacity of 1310 F g −1 at a 1 A g −1 current density. At a power density of 699.1 W kg −1 , NiCo-LDH@MXene showcased a substantial energy density of 73.8 Wh kg −1 in a symmetric supercapacitor. At a 6 A g −1 current density, NiCo-LDH@MXene-based SC could retain 92.5% of its capacitance at the end of 10,000 charge and discharge cycles, underscoring its excellent stability in practical application. Electrochemical tests and DFT simulation further revealed enhanced ionic adsorption/transport and electron transport, more enriched active sites, and altered electrical configuration on account of the lower energy barrier for NiCo-LDH@MXene relative to NiCo-LDH. The synthesis route and the insights reported here pave a way toward advanced electrode design and development.

One-pot hydrothermal synthesis of flower-shaped Zif-67@NiCo-LDH heterostructure as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Xiong Qiming,Li Xiongzhuang,Zhou Mulan,Chen Rentian,Sun Cheng,Zhou Yanyan,Wang Sijia,Qiu Xiangyun,Song Meijia,Wei Tao

Nickel cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) nanosheets have attracted much interests in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its high capacity and low cost. However, the low cycling stability limits their practical applications. Herein, we introduce a simple one-pot hydrothermal method to fabricate a novel flower-shaped Zif-67@NiCo-LDH heterostructure as the anode materials. The structures, morphology, and compositions of the materials were studied by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, EDX, and Raman spectra. Electrochemical tests were also conducted. The Zif-67@NiCo-LDH simultaneously inherited the cycling stability of Zif-67 and the high capacity of NiCo-LDH, which effectively improves the conductivity and structural integrity under the synergistic effect of the flower-shaped heterostructures and compositions and showed a good electrochemical performance. This work might enable the future design of heterostructures materials with layered double hydroxide for many other energy-storage technologies.

Nitrogen-Doped tannin carbon dots anchored NiCo-LDH composites for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Shirui Wang,Jianping Deng,Menghan Li,Jiande Lin,Lu Luo,Zhanhui Yuan,Wenxue Zhang,Cheng He,Guanben Du,Weigang Zhao

This study demonstrates the synthesis and application of nitrogen-doped tannin carbon dots (TCDs) derived from condensed tannin of grapestone through a single-step hydrothermal method. The TCDs were employed to enhance the electrical conductivity, active site availability, structural stability, and charge storage mechanisms of NiCo-LDH composite electrodes. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the incorporation of TCDs increases the density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level, thereby improving charge transport properties and contributing to the enhanced cycling stability. In a three-electrode system, the NiCo-LDH@TCDs 3.0 electrode exhibits an exceptional specific capacitance of 1804.2F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , with a capacitance retention of 77.4 % at a high current densities of 10 A g −1 . As button cell of asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled with tannin-based activated carbon (TAC600-4) as the negative electrode and NiCo-LDH@TCDs 3.0 as the positive electrode, the device demonstrates a maximum energy density of 87 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 800 W kg −1 , and maintains a high energy density of 61.6 Wh kg −1 even at an ultra-high power density of 8000 W kg −1 , significantly surpassing devices composed solely of NiCo-LDH. Durability assessments further revealed 78.6 % capacitance retention and 100.9 of coulombic efficiency after 10,000 cycles, underscoring its applicability in high-performance energy storage. This study not only advances the synthesis of carbon dots from sustainable tannin sources but also provides valuable insights into optimizing the specific capacitance, rate capability, and cycling durability of LDH-based supercapacitors.

An electrochemical sensor based on porous heterojunction hollow NiCo-LDH/Ti3C2Tx MXenes composites for the detection of quercetin in natural plants

Zhong Yu,Liao Ran,He Guowen,Liu Saiwen,Zhang Jin,Chen Chao

Cubic hollow-structured NiCo-LDH was synthesized using a solvothermal method. Subsequently, clay-like Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes were electrostatically self-assembled with NiCo layered double hydroxides (NiCo-LDH) to form composites featuring three-dimensional porous heterostructures. The composites were characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, and FT-IR spectroscopy. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes exhibit excellent electrical conductivity and hydrophilicity, providing abundant binding sites for NiCo-LDH, thereby promoting an increase in ion diffusion channels. The formation of three-dimensional porous heterostructural composites enhances charge transport, significantly improving sensor sensitivity and response speed. Consequently, the sensor demonstrates excellent electrochemical detection capability for quercetin (Qu), with a detection range of 0.1–20 µM and a detection limit of 23 nM. Additionally, it has been applied to the detection of Qu in natural plants such as onion, golden cypress, and chrysanthemum. The recovery ranged from 97.6 to 102.28%. Graphical Abstract

Ultrathin NiCo-LDH regulated by CuNiCo trimetallic spinel sulfides as highly active and stable electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

Xinyuan Yu,Jiaying Shen,Qianqiao Chen,Qin Zhong

The rational design of heterostructures, including the synthesis of candidate materials and the construction of structures, is particularly important for the activities of electrocatalysts. Herein, a unique heterostructure of ultrathin NiCo-LDH wrapped CuNiCo trimetallic spinel sulfides was constructed via facile hydrothermal and electrodeposition processes. Due to the ultrathin NiCo-LDH layer, the change in the local electronic structure resulting from the interaction of two components can be effectively transferred to the surface of electrocatalysts, which was verified by XPS tests. The heterostructure exhibits excellent activity and stability as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting. The corresponding overpotentials are 270 mV at 50 mA cm−2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and 93 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1.0 M KOH, respectively. It is noteworthy that the OER activity exceeds that of RuO2. Meanwhile, the heterostructure presents excellent stability for more than 40 hours. The outstanding performance is attributed to the surface electronic structure of NiCo-LDH optimized by highly conductive and stable CuNiCo trimetallic spinel sulfides. The results confirm that it is an effective strategy to tune the catalytic performance by constructing a heterostructure with an ultrathin surface layer.

Interlayer Spacing Regulation of NiCo-LDH Nanosheets with Ultrahigh Specific Capacity for Battery-Type Supercapacitors

Qianfeng Pan,Fenghua Zheng,Dingfei Deng,Bo Chen,Yang Wang

The transition metal-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been extensively studied as promising functional nanomaterials owing to their excellent electrochemical activity and tunable chemical composition. In this work, using acetate anions (Ac–) as intercalating elements, the NiCo-LDH nanosheets arraying on Ni foam with different amounts of Ac– anion intercalation or volume of hydrothermal solution were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. The optimized amount of Ac– anions expanded the interlayer space of LDH nanosheets from 0.8 to 0.94 nm. An ultrahigh specific capacity of 1200 C g–1 at 1 A g–1 (690 C g–1 without Ac– anions), an outstanding rate capability of 72.5% at 30 A g–1, and a cycle stability of 79.90% after 4500 cycles were mainly attributed to the higher interlayer spacing of Ac– anion intercalation. The enlarged interlayer spacing was beneficial for stabilizing the α-phase of LDHs and accelerating the electron transport and electrolyte penetration in the electrochemical reaction. This work sheds light on the mechanisms of the interlayer spacing regulation of NiCo-LDH nanosheets and offers a promising strategy to synthesize functional nanomaterials with excellent electrochemical performance via integrating their unique layered structure and interlayer anion exchange characteristics.

Yazhou Liu,Jingwen Hu,Qiyong Zhu,Ping Yang,Yao Jiang,Xuezhi Zhang,Siying Wu

An innovative preparation approach was utilized to prepare bimetallic nanohybrid arrays of NiCo-LDH onto nickel foam through a hydrothermal technique. Then, 2,5-Dihydroxyterephthalic acid ligands were engaged to synthesize NiCo-MOF via a solvothermal method. Subsequently, an alkaline etching-induced technique transformed the bimetallic MOF back into LDH (designated as Et–NiCo-LDH), yielding a bimetallic hydroxide characterized by a denser nanohybrid array and a more abundant pore structure, thereby demonstrating exceptional specific capacitance. The resultant material exhibited a remarkable specific capacitance of 22.39 F cm −2 at a current density of 2 mA cm −2 (about 1194.16 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 .The loading capacity is 12 mg per square centimeter). After enduring 5000 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles at a current density of 15 mA cm −2 , the material maintained 83.6 % of its initial capacity. Furthermore, when assembled into an asymmetric supercapacitor device with the as-synthesized Et–NiCo-LDH@NF composites serving as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode, the device demonstrated an energy density of 671.42 Wh m −2 and a power density of 1399.99 W m −2 . Additionally, at a mass loading of 1 A g −1 , the energy density and power density were recorded as 45.04 Wh kg −1 and 350.37 W kg −1 , respectively, with a mass loading of 12 mg cm −2 . A capacity retention rate of 85.6 % was achieved after 5000 cycles. This study offers a straightforward method for producing uniform and dense bimetallic nanohybrid arrays tailored for applications in the capacitor field.

Efficient degradation of organic dye using Ni-MOF derived NiCo-LDH as peroxymonosulfate activator

Rajendran Ramachandran,Thangavel Sakthivel,Minzhang Li,Haiquan Shan,Zong-Xiang Xu,Fei Wang

Nickel-based metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF) was employed as a sacrificial template for the preparation of nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) under different hydrolysis time. The template etching rate varied at different hydrolysis time, resulting in variations of the structural and morphology of NiCo-LDHs. The NiCo-LDH/10 sample showed a large specific surface area and the well-oriented larger dimension of thinner sheets due to the sufficient in-situ etching of the Ni-MOF template. The NiCo-LDH/10 was an excellent heterogeneous catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for highly efficient Reactive Red-120 dye degradation. The results exhibited that the degradation efficiency of the NiCo-LDH/10-PMS catalyst was 89% for RR-120 dye within 10 min in the presence of the PMS system, which is higher than other NiCo-LDHs. Moreover, the other influencing factors such as PMS concentration, catalyst dosage, initial pH were also investigated towards degradation. The radical quenching measurement proved that the sulfate (SO 4 •− ) and hydroxyl (OH • ) had been indicated as the primary radicals. Besides, the NiCo-LDH/10-PMS catalyst showed excellent reusability even after five consecutive cycles (83.6% of the degradation efficiency). This work offer insight study on the construction of controlled morphology NiCo-LDH heterogeneous structure for high-efficiency PMS activation .

Menghui Li,Liang Fang,Hua Zhou,Fang Wu,Yi Lu,Haijun Luo,Yuxin Zhang,Baoshan Hu

In this paper, Nickel–Cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) nanosheets were first in situ synthesized on MXene (Ti 3 C 2 ) via a simple hydrothermal method , then glucose sensing performance based on three-dimensional porous MXene/NiCo-LDH nanocomposite was explored. At a working potential of 0.45 V (vs. SCE), the glucose sensor exhibits a wide linearity range (0.002 mM–4.096 mM), a low limit of detection (0.53 μM) and a rapid response (<3 s). Moreover, good selectivity , reproducibility and stability were also obtained. And the excellent performance can attribute to large area of contact of materials surface with glucose, fast electron transfer rate and easy diffusion of electrolyte provided by the novel 3D porous NiCo-LDH nanosheets on the conductive MXene substrate. Therefore, MXene/NiCo-LDH composites will be a candidate for electrochemical detection of glucose.

Zhe Jia,Jiayin Shang,Kaijing Xue,Xi Yang,Sumin Wang,Changhua Xu,Qiguan Wang

Graphical High OER/ORR performances : boosted oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as well as optimized oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and high-activity zinc-air batteries (ZAB), from a nitrogen-doped carbon nanomaterial (NCM) inserted Ni−Co layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) electrocatalyst on nickel foam are achieved. The super thin NCM prepared by calcination of self-assembled perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride/dicyandiamide improves the conductivity, electroactive surface area of NiCo-LDH nanoplates. Herein, a high performance bifunctional catalyst was prepared by inserting N-doped nanomaterials into Ni−Co layered dihydroxides (NiCo-LDH) nanoplates for high performance zinc-air battery. By using self-assembly of perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride and dicyandiamide in the hydrothermal condition, a nitrogen-containing super thin carbonaceous nanosheet is achieved after calcination. Then NCM inserted NiCo-LDH nanoplates attached to nickel foam (NiCo-LDH/NCM@NF) are synthesized by in-situ production of NiCo-LDH species on NCM wrapped NF. The specific NCM improves the conductivity, electroactive surface area and the ORR/OER bifunctional activity of NiCo-LDH nanoplates. In addition, benefited from the formed rich oxygen vacancies, NiCo-LDH/NCM@NF delivers the low OER overpotential (352 mV at 50 mA cm −2 ) and boosted ORR performance with a half-wave potential of 0.765 V vs RHE. As the air cathode, the fabricated ZAB devices show a satisfactory capacity of 685 mAh g −1 and the energy density of 158 mW cm −2 .

Hydrothermal engineering of triple-scale corrosion resistance: Structural barrier, oxygen vacancy, and surface functionalization in Ce-NiCo-LDH coatings

Lifeng Hao,Junhuan Zhao,Kangyuan Li,Weiping Zheng,Yanfei Yang,Chenyang Qiu,Zewen Jiang,Wenjun Xia

We report a hydrothermal engineering strategy to synergistically regulate structural barriers, oxygen vacancy-driven redox cycling, and surface functionalization in Ce-NiCo-LDH coatings for ultralong corrosion protection. Vertically aligned LDH nanosheets constructed a tortuous labyrinth barrier to physically impede corrosive species penetration. Oxygen vacancies acted as electron reservoirs to drive Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox cycling, enabling dynamic passivation repair via preferential Ce 4+  → Ce 3+ reduction at vacancy sites. Surface functionalization further enhanced protection through two independent pathways: CTAB induced interlocked fibrous nanostructures for mechanical reinforcement, while PFDT grafting formed a fluorine-rich hydrophobic barrier through C-F dipole interactions. EIS characterization demonstrated a 3.6-fold enhancement in charge transfer resistance (Rct = 5.1 × 10 5 Ω·cm 2 ) for the sequentially hydrothermally processed Ce-NiCo-LDHs compared to their single-step counterparts (1.4 × 10 5 Ω·cm 2 ). The CTAB-modified coating achieved 99.0 % inhibition efficiency, while PFDT modification provided long-term hydrophobicity. This triple-scale synergy-structural obstruction, redox-mediated self-healing, and surface engineering-provides a universal framework for designing advanced protective coatings.
