For electrochemical energy conversion, highly efficient and inexpensive electrocatalysts are required, which are principally designed and synthesized by virtue of structural regulations. Herein, we propose a rational linker scission approach to induce lattice strain in metal–organic framework (MOF) catalysts by partially replacing multicoordinating linkers with nonbridging ligands. Strained NiFe-MOFs with 6% lattice expansion exhibit a superior catalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions; the overpotential is reduced to 230 mV (86.6 mV dec–1) from 320 mV (164.9 mV dec–1) for the unstrained NiFe-MOFs at a current density of 10 mA cm–2. Operando studies by using synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption and infrared spectroscopy identified the emergence of a key *OOH intermediate on Ni3+/4+ sites during OER, providing strong evidence that the Ni3+/4+ sites are the active sites and the formation of *OOH is the rate-limiting step. The first-principles calculations were performed to reveal the strain-induced electronic structure changes of the NiFe-MOFs and the Gibbs free energy profile during OER. It is found that the optimized Ni 3d eg-orbital facilitates the formation of *OOH, thus enhancing the OER performance of the strained MOFs.

Sulfur incorporation modulates the electronic structure of NiFe-MOF-74. • Enhanced OER kinetics with low overpotential and small Tafel slope. • Operando EIS and ATR-FTIR reveal facilitated intermediate evolution. • DFT reveals optimized adsorption energetics via d-band modulation. • Electronic inheritance effect persists after electrochemical reconstruction. Regulating the local chemical environment of transition metal-based electrocatalysts is important for improving oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, but the relationship among heteroatom modification, electrochemical reconstruction, and the resulting active phase remains difficult to establish unambiguously. Herein, a sulfur-modified low-crystalline NiFe MOF-74 precursor is developed to examine how sulfur-containing species influence the precursor coordination environment and subsequent OER behavior. Structural characterizations support the introduction of sulfur-containing species into the MOF-74-related precursor, accompanied by reduced crystallinity and a lower surface area. The optimized catalyst exhibits enhanced OER activity, delivering an overpotential of 257 mV at 10 mA cm⁻² with a Tafel slope of 63.4 mV dec⁻¹. Operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, methanol oxidation reaction probing, and operando ATR-FTIR measurements indicate that sulfur modification affects the electrochemical evolution process from precursor activation to oxygen-containing intermediate conversion. Post-OER XRD, XPS, and TEM mapping support reconstruction into a NiFe (oxy)hydroxide-like phase in which sulfur-containing species remain detectable after reconstruction. Density functional theory calculations based on representative reconstructed NiFeOOH/S-NiFeOOH models suggest that sulfur-associated local perturbation may induce electronic redistribution and reduce the maximum uphill free-energy change of the potential-determining step. These results are consistent with a possible sulfur-assisted evolution process in which sulfur-containing species modify the precursor and remain detectable after electrochemical reconstruction, while their exact role in the reconstructed active phase remains unresolved. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have received widespread attention in various energy related applications due to their unique structural characteristics. Nevertheless, the inherent low electronic conductivity of MOFs is a major limitation for their competitive activity. Herein, we synthesized a self-standing NiFe MOF@Ni3S2 core–shell hierarchical heterostructure through using Ni3S2 grown on nickel foam (NF) as a semisacrificial template, in which the highly conductive Ni3S2 nanosheets core endows the hybrid with rapid charge transfer capability, and the bimetallic NiFe MOF nanosheets provide abundant exposed active sites. Benefiting from the structural and compositional advantages, the enhanced electrocatalytic activity of the as-obtained NiFe MOF@Ni3S2/NF has been achieved toward alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As a result, the NiFe MOF@Ni3S2/NF only requires overpotentials of 177 and 219 mV to yield OER current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm–2, respectively, and exhibits a very small Tafel slope of 24.1 mV dec–1 and high durability, making it among the most efficient earth-abundant OER catalysts. This study will inspire further construction of MOF-based nanocomposites for applications in electrochemical renewable energy systems.

Constructing specific noble metal/metal—organic framework (MOF) nanoheterostructures is an effective strategy for promoting water electrolysis, yet remains highly challenging due to complex synthesis methods, difficulties in structural characterization, and the demanding nature of performance optimization. In this work, a heterojunction electrocatalyst was developed through growing Ru nanoparticles on NiFe-MOF nanosheets (NSs) supported by nickel foam (NF) using an easily accessible solvothermal method followed by an annealing strategy. Owing to the electronic interaction between Ru nanoparticles and NiFe-MOF NSs, the optimized Ru@NiFe-MOF/NF catalyst exhibits excellent bifunctional performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (with an overpotential of 84 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 ) and the oxygen evolution reaction (with an overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 ) in a 1.0 mol·L −1 KOH solution, which is superior to that of commercial catalysts. This study highlights a promising strategy for designing and developing efficient electrocatalysts for overall water electrolysis.

Transition metal NiFe-based MOFs have attracted much attention as catalysts for electrocatalytic reactions due to their tunable electronic structure, enormous specific surface area, and abundant pore structure. However, MOF materials generally suffer from poor electrical conductivity. To solve this problem, MOFs can be grown in situ on substrates with good electrical conductivity. Another key issue to be solved is the tight connection of MOFs with the substrate, which will directly affect the cycling stability of MOF catalysts and their ability to withstand high current density. Based on this, in this study, the in situ growth of the NiFe-MOF on a nickel–iron foam (NFF) substrate using NaCl as the corrosive agent enables close contact between the generated NiFe-MOF and NFF. Electrocatalytic OER tests confirm that the prepared NiFe-MOF/NFF catalyst has an overpotential of 233.0 mV at 10 mA cm−2, which is superior to those of the corresponding Ni-MOF/NFF and Fe-MOF/NFF. Ni and Fe collaborated in concert to boost the performance of electrocatalysts. Additionally, the catalyst can also maintain good cycling stability for 21 h without obvious current decay. The implementation of this study opens a new research direction for the practical application of MOF catalysts in electrocatalysis.

Water splitting via photoelectrochemical (PEC) system is a promising approach for sustainable hydrogen production. Yet, photogenerated charge accumulation and recombination impede it by water oxidation kinetics due to not only four-electron transfer process but also the oxygen spin state change. Here, a modulation of spin state in NiFe-based metal-organic framework (NiFe-MOF) cocatalyst is employed on BiVO4 photoanodes to accelerate interface kinetics. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism combined with spin-polarized density functional theory calculations reveal that Fe incorporation induces a spin-state transition of the Ni dz2 orbital (dz2↓ to dz2↑) through asymmetric Fe-O-Ni bond coupling within the MOF nodes. The resulting downward shift of the Ni dz2 energy level weakens the adsorption of oxygenated intermediates (*OH/*OOH) on Ni sites, thereby facilitating *OOH desorption and O2 release during oxygen evolution. Consequently, the NiFe-MOF/BiVO4 photoanodes exhibit a significantly enhanced PEC performance, delivering a photocurrent density of 6.0 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus Reversible Hydrogen Electrode (RHE) under simulated sunlight. This work highlights asymmetric metal–oxygen bond-driven electron spin engineering as an effective strategy to boost PEC activity.

The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) class of electrocatalysts is characterized by adjustable pore structure, design diversity, and homogeneous distribution of active metal sites. Due to the low conductivity of MOF class materials and high diffusion resistance in bulk crystalline MOFs, the transition metal nitride materials have the merits of outstanding conductivity, strong chemical stability, and high electrocatalytic activity, which can be used as a suitable to-site support material to grow the MOFs materials. Therefore, in this thesis, a MOF material for electrocatalysis was grown on transition metal nitride-like materials by optimizing the composition and constructing a reasonable structure. This research introduces an innovative design methodology for the fabrication of non-precious metal-based catalysts. These catalysts are characterized by their cost-effectiveness, high catalytic activity, and robust stability, thereby offering a promising alternative to traditional precious metal catalysts. The overpotential of the optimized NiFe-MOF@NiNCo 3 /NF sample is as low as 260 mV under a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . The NiFe-MOF@NiNCo 3 /NF||NiNCo 3 /NF alkaline electrolytic cell stands out for its low operating voltage of 1.66 V and high durability, maintaining stable performance even at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 over multiple cycles.

Two-dimensional metal–organic frame (2D MOF) materials have attracted great attention due to the successful combination of the unique properties of MOF and chemical properties of 2D material. In this paper, NiFe MOF/NF with a two-dimensional layered vertical structure were prepared by bottom-up solvothermal method. We used different solvent mixtures (methanol/water, ethanol/water, acetone/water, N, N-dimethylformamide/water) to control the synthesis of MOF and found that the oligpolar solvent mixture of acetone and water was the best in controlling the formation of these two-dimensional MOFs. The obtained NiFe MOF/NF in acetone/water appeared the best performance as electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction, in which the NiFe MOF/NF delivered a current density of 50 mA·cm −2 at a low overpotential of 270 mV with a small Tafel slope of 55 mV·dec -1 . In addition, NiFe MOF/NF has an excellent stability at a high current density of 100 mA·cm −2 .

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely investigated as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, their catalytic performance needs to be further improved. Herein, a multi-pronged approach combining multi-metallic MOFs, 2D ultrathin structures and MOF hybridization was attempted. Specifically, the nanocomposite of lamellar NiFe-BTC and nanowire-like cobalt carbonate hydroxide hydrate (CCHH) was prepared on nickel foam (NF) by a two-step method. The as-prepared NiFe-BTC/CCHH/NF nanocomposite displayed excellent OER performance with an overpotential of 270 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm −2 and good stability in 1.0 M KOH. To construct an overall water splitting electrolytic cell, the phosphorization product of CCHH/NF (P-CCHH/NF) with high catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was used as the cathode. The water splitting electrolytic cell with NiFe-BTC/CCHH/NF as anode and P-CCHH/NF as cathode was highly efficient and stable, which only needed a voltage of 1.55 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . This multi-pronged approach is expected to inspire other researchers to design high-performance OER catalysts.

To effectively improve the particle dispersion of the catalytic metal and catalytic activity of the palladium electrode, a new type of efficient Pd/NiFe-MOF/foam-Ni composite electrode was prepared. The results showed that the reaction rate constant of chloramphenicol (CAP) by Pd/NiFe-MOF/foam-Ni was three times that of Pd/foam-Ni. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) results showed that palladium on Pd/NiFe-MOF/foam-Ni had a lower oxidation state than that on Pd/foam-Ni. The Pd nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on the composite electrode and had a small particle size. The electrode had good resistance to sulfites and the electrocatalytic activity was hardly affected in the presence of Cl - , NO 3 - , HCO 3 - , CO 3 2- and Ca 2+ in wastewater. Besides, the introduction of nickel-iron bimetallic organic framework (NiFe-MOF) increased the electron density of Pd, improved the dispersion and electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) of Pd. The reaction pathway of CAP was proposed, and the ecotoxicity of CAP and its products was evaluated by the Ecological Structure Activity Relationships (ECOSAR) model. Combined experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) analysis enable us to propose the hydrodechlorination mechanism of CAP on the Pd/NiFe-MOF/foam-Ni electrode. The Pd/NiFe-MOF/foam-Ni composite electrode has good application prospects in the treatment of organic pollutants in wastewater and other environmental remediation applications.

Industrial effluents containing persistent organic contaminants such as synthetic dyes and antibiotics are escalating global crises. Although membrane filtration offers an energy-efficient solution, its long-term performance is severely limited by fouling and the inherent permeability–selectivity dilemma. Herein, we propose a synergistic strategy to overcome these challenges by developing photocatalytic self-cleaning nanofiltration membranes through the incorporation of NiFe-MOF/CQD nanocomposites via interfacial polymerization. The introduced carbon quantum dots (CQDs) not only enhance the hydrophilicity and dispersibility of NiFe-MOFs but also markedly boost their visible-light photocatalytic activity. The optimized membranes (TFN-NC3) achieve an exceptional pure water permeance of 20.2 LMH/bar (L m −2 h −1 bar −1 )—approximately 2.3 times that of conventional thin-film composite (TFC) membranes—while maintaining a high Na 2 SO 4 rejection of 98.2% and outstanding removal rates (>86%) for multiple dyes across a range of molecular weights and charges. Moreover, the membranes demonstrate robust tetracycline rejection (>93.4%) over a broad pH range. Under visible-light irradiation, the TFN-NC3 membranes exhibit remarkable self-cleaning capability, sustaining a flux recovery rate above 95% over five consecutive filtration-regeneration cycles. This work provides a facile and scalable approach to fabricate high-performance, fouling-resistant nanofiltration membranes, offering a promising solution for the sustainable treatment and reuse of dye-laden wastewater.

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) with an adjustable structure can greatly promote the activity of water electrolysis owing to the zero-valence metal property of P. Therefore, designing the structure of metal phosphides by regulating the structure of the metal–organic framework (MOF) precursor is an important method to optimize the performance of catalysts. Herein, we prepared a P-doped FeNi compound by utilizing a low-temperature phosphating bimetallic organic framework, which was grown on an NiFe foam (NFF) using terephthalic acid and 2-methylimidazole as ligands through a hydrothermal method. Compared to monometallic phosphides, bimetallic phosphides have shown excellent electrocatalytic performance. The overpotential of P-FeNi@NFF was only 194 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. In addition, the overall water splitting (OWS) performance of P-FeNi@NFF was analyzed. A current density of 10 mA cm−2 could be achieved with a cell voltage of 1.59 V, and the OWS process could continue for at least 27 h at a high current density of 500 mA cm−2. Its excellent catalytic performance was mainly attributed to the excellent conductivity of the phosphide catalyst on the conductive substrate. Additionally, the lattice distortion resulting from a lattice mismatch between Ni2P and Fe2P could accelerate electron transfer, thus greatly improving the intrinsic activity of the catalyst.
