Effects of gallium addition to mesoporous alumina by impregnation on dibenzothiophene hydrodesulfurization performances of the corresponding NiMo supported catalysts

Wenwu Zhou,Yanan Zhang,Xiujuan Tao,Yasong Zhou,Qiang Wei,Sijia Ding

The effects of gallium (Ga) modification on mesoporous Al 2 O 3 (MA) were studied, focusing on the morphology changes of the active phases and the application as catalyst support for catalytic performances for dibenzothiophene (DBT) hydrodesulfurization (HDS). MA samples with wide mesopore size distribution (MA-W), double mesopore size distribution (MA-D) and single mesopore size distribution (MA-S) were synthesized from the boehmite sol–gel via a hydrothermal synthesis method. The synthesized MA-S sample was modified with Ga 2 O 3 , and the corresponding sulfide NiMo supported catalysts were prepared. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, N 2 physisorption, NH 3 -TPD, H 2 -TPR, HRTEM and XPS. Superior catalytic performance was observed over the NiMo/MA-S-2Ga catalyst due to the moderate interaction between the active metals and the supports; the superior morphology for Ni promoted MoS 2 crystals, the highest sulfidation degree, the largest proportion of the NiMoS phase and the enhanced hydrogenation activity caused by the introduction of Ga species.

Enhanced catalytic activity of monodispersed porous Al2O3 colloidal spheres with NiMo for simultaneous hydrodesulfurization and hydrogenation

Kaihong Xie,Yanxiong Fang,Baoyu Liu,Chengchao Li

Novel composites made from monodispersed porous Al-glycolate spheres (NiMo/Al-SP) were synthesized through alcoholysis or hydrolysis treatments. The obtained samples were characterized by a complementary combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), N2 physisorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), and pyridine Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (Py FT-IR). In addition, the catalytic performances of the resultant catalysts were evaluated in the simultaneous HDS of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and HYD of naphthalene (DBT and naphthalene represent the sulfur-containing compounds and polycyoalkanes, respectively). The experimental results showed that, 71.22% DBT and 88.28% naphthalene were converted by NiMo/Al-SP(H) under the conditions of 270 °C temperature, 5 MPa H2 (initial pressure at room temperature) and 10 h reaction time. The design and preparation of NiMo/Al-SP provide an effective and novel pathway for the development of high-performance catalysts and production processes.

Catalytic hydrogenation of stearic acid over reduced NiMo catalysts: Structure–activity relationship and effect of the hydrogen-donor

Shilei Ding,Zhixia Li,Fuwei Li,Zhaohe Wang,Jiangfeng Li,Tingting Zhao,Hongfei Lin,Congjin Chen

Reduced NiMo catalysts were prepared by loading NiMo elements on a γ-Al 2 O 3 -β-zeolite composite support, followed by reduction with hydrogen at temperatures in the range of 400–600°C. The hydrogenation activities were investigated through treatment of stearic acid (SA), and were compared with those obtained with the composite support and the oxidized NiMo catalyst (Cox). In the tested reduction temperature range, the catalyst reduced at 450°C (T450) achieved the highest conversion (close to 100%) and C18 hydrocarbon selectivity (58.0%), which were much higher than the results obtained over the composite support and Cox. Reduction treatment contributed to production of more reducible metal species and improvement of the dispersity of metal active sites, consequently leading to high hydrodeoxygenation activity. Furthermore, the effects of H 2 pressure and the hydrogen-donor (tetralin) on the catalytic activity of T450 were investigated. Higher H 2 pressures promoted SA conversion and C18 selectivity. In contrast with dodecane as a solvent, tetralin significantly promoted the formation of C18 in a H 2 atmosphere, but improved the production of C17 and suppressed the formation of lighter hydrocarbons (≤C16) in a N 2 atmosphere. This is associated with the hydrogen-donating activity of tetralin.

A functionalized porous carbon from super absorbent polymer serving as the support of NiMo hydrodesulfurization catalyst

Yu Xiaohang,Dong Yanzeng,Jia Haining,Li Xin,Wang Zhiheng,Liu Yanyan,Gao Ruiyao,Yao Songdong

Multilayered, spatially ordered and highly permeable three-dimensional cross-network porous carbons were prepared from waste superabsorbent polymer (SAP) and were used as supports for NiMo hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts. The acidified SAP-based carbon support and the corresponding catalyst were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, N 2 adsorption–desorption, NH 3 -TPD, TG, SEM, TEM, XPS and H 2 -TPR. The results show that the acidification of the SAP-based carbon support optimizes the pore structure, increases the acidic surface functional groups, enhances the interaction between the metal and the support, and significantly improves the catalytic hydrodesulfurization performance of the catalyst. Liquid phase acidification can produce defects and wrinkles on surfaces of carbon material and form interconnected voids on spongy catalyst. Further acidification with nitric acid vapor is helpful to form a three-dimensional cross-network structure with multilayer, spatial order and high permeability. Under the same metal Mo loading and high reaction temperature, HDS performance of DBT and 4,6-DMDBT of the NiMo catalyst supported on acidified SAP is better than that of the commercial NiMo catalyst. A solvent-free, selective liquid phase hydrogenation of nitroarenes to aniline in slurry bubble mode on porous NiMo bimetallic catalyst

Di Liu,Pengshan Zhao,Hao Zhang,Minjie Liu,Junyan Wang,Guoming Zhao,Qingbin Guo

NiMo bimetallic catalysts were prepared by a solid reaction method. On the NiMo catalyst, the selective liquid phase hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline was achieved in slurry bubble mode. And the high yields (98.9%) were obtained under the conditions of 80 °C, solvent-free and atmospheric pressure. The effect of Mo on the catalytic behavior of Ni based catalyst was investigated. The characterization displayed that the inclusion of Mo could improve the specific surface area and pore volume, and the solid reaction method made metal Mo enrichment on the surface of catalyst. These two aspects should be responsible for excellent catalytic performance of NiMo catalyst. In sum, we described a simple and efficient NiMo catalyst and provided a facile and green procedure for liquid phase hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline.

Highly dispersed NiMo@rGO nanocomposite catalysts fabricated by a two-step hydrothermal method for hydrogen evolution

Cao Duanhao,Ma Xiaofeng,Zhang Yipeng,Ta La,Yang Yakun,Xu Chao,Ye Feng,Liu Jianguo

Exploring and designing a high-performance non-noble metal catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are crucial for the large-scale application of H 2 by water electrolysis. Here, novel catalysts with NiMo nanoparticles decorated on reduced graphene oxide (NiMo@rGO) synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal method were reported. Physical characterization results showed that the prepared NiMo@rGO-1 had an irregular lamellar structure, and the NiMo nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on the rGO. NiMo@rGO-1 exhibited outstanding HER performance in an alkaline environment and required only 93 and 180 mV overpotential for HER in 1.0 M KOH solution to obtain current densities of −10 and −50 mA·cm − 2 , respectively. Stability tests showed that NiMo@rGO-1 had a certain operating stability for 32 h. Under the same condition, the performance of NiMo@rGO-1 can be comparable with that of commercial Pt/C catalysts at high current density. The synergistic effect between NiMo particles and lamellate graphene can remarkably promote charge transfer in electrocatalytic reactions. As a result, NiMo@rGO-1 presented the advantages of high intrinsic activity, large specific surface area, and small electrical impedance. The lamellar graphene played a role in dispersion to prevent the aggregation of nanoparticles. The prepared NiMo@rGO-1 can be used in an-ion exchange membrane water electrolysis to produce hydrogen. This study provides a simple preparation method for efficient and low-cost water electrolysis to produce hydrogen in the future.

Controllable assembly of NiMo nano-wool shell on zeolite Y and its advanced behavior of hydrodesulfurization toward dibenzothiophene

Xiaoqian Li,Shenyong Ren,Lu Liu,Chi Yang

A core-shell structured USY-xTT@NiMo catalyst was prepared through thermal treatment method and evaluated for the catalytic hydrodesulfurization (HDS) performance toward dibenzothiophene (DBT). The shell assembled from NiMoS nano-wool provided abundant active site. This nano-wool morphology and core-shell structure resulted in the catalyst with enhanced specific surface area, pore volume, lower interaction between the support and active metals, and facilitated metal dispersion. In addition, the nano-wool morphology and core-shell structure also promoted the degree of sulfurization and provided more sulfur vacancies, which enhanced the HDS performance of the corresponding catalysts. An efficient USY-16TT@NiMo catalyst with shorter slab lengths (average 2.50 nm), higher average stacking number (3.37 layers), and more edge active sites was assembled, which showed superior k HDS value of DBT up to 8.29 × 10 −4  mol g −1  h −1 and high direct desulfurization selectivity to be 88 %.

Nanosponge-like Solid Solution of NiMo with a High Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Performance over a Wide Range of Current Densities

Pengfei Shang,Zhiguo Ye,Yi Ding,Zhixiang Zhu,Xinyuan Peng,Guang Ma,Duosheng Li

Owing to unstable electrical energy generation from intermittent solar and wind energy sources, the development of efficient and durable nonnoble electrocatalysts is extremely desirable, in particular, those that can be used over a wide range of current densities for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), especially >1 A cm–2, which is extremely desirable for energy transformation in power systems. Here, a nanosponge-like NiMo solid solution based on a nanoscale Kirkendall effect is fabricated via a one-step high-temperature sintering method. A polycrystalline layer of NiMo oxyhydroxide is formed on the surface of the as-prepared electrode after aging, thus achieving a low overpotential and Tafel slope of 37 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and 39.2 mV dec–1, respectively. The electrode displays superior electrochemical stability over a wide range of current densities without compromising its electrocatalytic activity; in particular, it is durable for over 300 h at 2 A cm–2. This is attributed to the combination of the 3D-interconnected nanosponge structure, synergistic effect between the Ni and Mo species, lattice distortion of the solid solution, and its high conductivity. This work provides a possible commercialization for the fabrication of nonprecious electrocatalysts with high performance in large-scale energy conversion.

Synthesis of novel NiMo catalysts supported on highly ordered TiO2-Al2O3 composites and their superior catalytic performance for 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene hydrodesulfurization

Wenwu Zhou,Li Yang,Lang Liu,Zhiping Chen,Anning Zhou,Yating Zhang,Xinfu He,Faxiang Shi,Zegao Zhao

Highly ordered mesoporous TiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 composites with different TiO 2 mass contents (MA-xTi) were successfully synthesized via an improved solvent evaporation-induced self-assembly method and the corresponding NiMo supported hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts were prepared via wetness incipient co-impregnation method. The materials were characterized by means of XRD, ICP-OES, N 2 physical adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM, Py-FTIR, H 2 -TPR, HRTEM and XPS and the catalytic activities for 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) HDS over the prepared NiMo/MA-xTi series catalysts were investigated. The results show that the crystal forms, crystal morphologies, pore structures, pore arrangements and acidity properties of the MA-xTi samples varied with the incorporation and increase of TiO 2 species; the interaction between the active metals and the support materials (MSI) can be modulated by the incorporation of TiO 2 species, and TiO 2 incorporation also can promote the formation of the so-called “Type II” NiMoS active phase via changing the morphology of Ni promoted MoS 2 slabs, promoting the sulfidation of both Ni and Mo species and enhancing the proportion of NiMoS phase. The catalytic evaluation results show that the enhancement in the overall HDS activity of the NiMo/MA-xTi series catalysts were mainly contributed by the enhancement in the hydrogenation desulfurization (HYDS) activity. Catalyst NiMo/MA-20Ti exhibited the superior catalytic performance due to its highly ordered mesopore arrangement, proper acidity, moderate MSI, moderate stacking and high proportion of NiMoS phase which leads to more highly active “Type II” active sites.

Rhenium modification on NiMo/Al2O3 catalyst and effects on the hydrodesulfurization reaction route selectivity of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene

Qiang Wei,Wenbin Huang,Xiaodong Liu,Anqi Li,Pengfei Zhang,Zhusong Xu,Zhiqing Yu,Xiaohan Wang,Haoran Liu,Yasong Zhou

A series of Re modified NiMo/Al 2 O 3 hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts with different contents of Re 2 O 7 were successfully synthesized by stepwise impregnation method and co-impregnation method respectively. The effects of Re modification and impregnation methods on the physical-chemical properties of the prepared catalysts were determined by the characterization techniques such as XRD, N 2 physical adsorption-desorption, NH 3 -TPD, Py-FTIR and HRTEM. Finally, the effects of the Re modification and the impregnation methods on the catalytic activity and the HDS reaction route selectivity were evaluated using 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) as a probe. The results show that the crystal morphologies and pore structures of the synthesized catalysts varied with the contents of Re 2 O 7 and the impregnation methods and the amounts of acid sites can be modulated by the incorporation of Re 2 O 7 and the impregnation methods. Moreover, Re modification was conducive to the formation of the “type II” Ni-Mo-S active phase by changing the morphology of the Ni promoted MoS 2 slabs. The HDS evaluation of 4,6-DMDBT results show that Re modification can effectively improve the 4,6-DMDBT conversions, DDS route selectivity and even 3,3′-dimethylcyclohexanebenzene (3,3′-DMCHB) selectivity in varying degrees, and compared with that of co-impregnation method, the Re modification by stepwise impregnation method exhibited a more prominent effect. In general, 1 wt% Re 2 O 7 content was the most favorable to the HDS reaction since excessive Re 2 O 7 content has very little promoting effect.

Catalytic Depolymerization of a Lignin-Rich Corncob Residue into Aromatics in Supercritical Ethanol over an Alumina-Supported NiMo Alloy Catalyst

Yunfei Bai,Kai Cui,Yushuai Sang,Kai Wu,Fei Yan,Fuhang Mai,Zewei Ma,Zhe Wen,Hong Chen,Mengmeng Chen,Yongdan Li

A one-pot process for the depolymerization of lignin-rich corncob residue (LRCR) is investigated in supercritical ethanol over an alumina-supported NiMo (NiMo/Al) alloy catalyst. The LRCR, as a major byproduct in the corncob enzymatic hydrolysis process, was completely liquefied and effectively transformed into aromatic compounds without the formation of tar or char under optimal reaction conditions. The reaction temperature, time, solvent, and initial hydrogen pressure have significant effects on the depolymerization of LRCR. The highest overall aromatic yield of 255.4 mg/g of LRCR with 57.9 wt % alkylphenols (e.g., 4-ethylphenol, 2,5-diethylphenol, and 2,6-diisopropylphenol) was achieved with an initial 27.6 bar (gauge) of hydrogen in supercritical ethanol at 320 °C for 7.5 h. The depolymerization of LRCR is also examined over Ni/γ-Al2O3, Mo/γ-Al2O3, and the physical mixture of these two catalysts. The NiMo/Al alloy catalyst exhibits much higher activity than that of other catalysts, and a synergistic effect between Ni and Mo active species is proposed. Furthermore, X-ray powder diffraction results show that the Mo1.24Ni0.76 alloy is expected to be an important active species for the depolymerization reaction.

Fe-NiOOH/NiMo/NF heterojunction synergistically enables stable wastewater degradation and efficient HER at high current density

Yushi Han,Qin Yin,Shuo Geng

The development of the liquor industry urgently needs to solve the problem of wastewater treatment. The electrochemical oxidation method, with its advantages of high efficiency and environmental friendliness, has surpassed traditional processes. The low electro-oxidation potential of organic alcohols in wastewater (significantly lower than the oxygen evolution reaction, OER) endows it with dual value: it can replace the anode OER while simultaneously achieving pollutant degradation and driving the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the cathode, achieving the synergy of “anode pollution control and cathode hydrogen production”. Based on this, this study constructed a Fe-NiOOH/NiMo/NF heterojunction catalyst, which, through the synergy of the efficient alcohol degradation ability of Fe-NiOOH and the excellent hydrogen evolution performance of NiMo, established a stable coupling system for wastewater degradation and hydrogen evolution at high current densities. Experiments confirmed that: Experimentally, the Fe-NiOOH/NiMo/NF anode delivers 200 mA cm −2 at 1.434 V vs. RHE; the NiMo/NF cathode reaches 20 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 88 mV; and the full cell (Fe-NiOOH/NiMo/NF=|NiMo/NF) sustains 100 mA cm −2 for 100 h with only a 30 mV rise in voltage. Compared with the high-purity alcohol-based OER replacement scheme, using low-cost liquor wastewater as the anode reactant significantly reduces the cost of hydrogen production. The stable operation of this synergy system at high current densities provides a reliable technical path for the industrialized wastewater degradation and hydrogen production.
