Herein, a kind of low-κ epoxy composites with excellent comprehensive properties were prepared by introducing chloride salt of octa (aminopropylsilsesquioxane). The dielectric constant (106 Hz) of the composite was decreased by 0.94 when the fillers loading was only 3 wt%. The thermal stability and shore hardness were both improved, and the water adsorption was reduced. The improved properties of the composites were mainly attributed to the intrinsic cage-like structure of the filler and its good dispersion in the matrix. Moreover, the strong interface interaction between the filler and matrix also played an important role.
Octa(3,3,3-trifluoropropyl) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (8F-POSS) was synthesized via a vertex-capping method and incorporated into natural rubber (NR) and deproteinized natural rubber (DPNR) to fabricate inorganic–organic vulcanizates. Curing characteristics, crosslink density, and the filler–rubber interaction parameter (α) were evaluated. We found that 8F-POSS retarded vulcanization kinetics but eventually enhanced network integrity. Two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) spectroscopy indicated a hydrogen-bond shielding effect between siloxane cages and protein hydroxyl groups in NR. This interaction governed morphology development: proteins in NR acted as compatibilizers to improve initial POSS dispersion, though at high loadings they compromised reinforcement efficiency (α fell from 18.12 to 9.04). In contrast, DPNR vulcanizates showed stronger direct filler–rubber interactions, with higher α values (25.66–35.58) and a more constrained physical network. Despite a denser physical network, the 8F-POSS cages increased fractional free volume and promoted interfacial frictional slippage, leading to a synergistic “reinforcement–dissipation” effect. As a consequence, 8F-POSS/DPNR vulcanizates exhibited an enhanced damping performance (e.g., a loss factor of 1.26) alongside a depressed Tg, reduced equilibrium swelling in oil from 324% to 147%, high hydrophobicity (water contact angle above 120°), and distinctive multi-stage thermal stability. These findings demonstrate a strategy to manipulate the protein network in NR using nanoscale hybrid fillers for the design of high-performance vulcanizates.
A novel graphene nanomaterial functionalized by octa(aminopropyl) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OapPOSS) was synthesized and then confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM EDX), atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The obtained functionalized graphene (OapPOSS-GO) was used to reinforce waterborne polyurethane (WPU) to obtain OapPOSS-GO/WPU nanocomposites by in situ polymerization. The thermal, mechanical, and hydrophobic properties of nanocomposites as well as the dispersion behavior of OapPOSS-GO in the polymer were investigated by TGA, a tensile testing machine, water contact angle tests, and field emission SEM, respectively. Compared with GO/WPU and OapPOSS/WPU composites, the strong interfacial interaction between OapPOSS-GO and the WPU matrix facilitates a much better dispersion and load transfer from the WPU matrix to the OapPOSS-GO. It was found that the tensile strength of the OapPOSS-GO/WPU composite film with 0.20 wt % OapPOSS-GO exhibited a 2.5-fold increase in tensile strength, compared with neat WPU. Better thermal stability and hydrophobicity of nanocomposites were also achieved by the addition of OapPOSS-GO. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134 , 44440.
Gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) based on octa(3-chloropropyl)-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OCP-POSS)-modified polyvinylidene fluoride/poly(acrylonitrile) /poly(methylmethacrylate) (PVDF/PAN/PMMA) fibrous membrane was prepared by electrospinning method to improve the thermal stability of GPE and prevent the leakage of liquid electrolyte for lithium ion battery. The effect of OCP-POSS content on the morphology, porosity and electrolyte uptake, mechanical strength, thermal stability of spinning fibrous membrane and ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability window, and interface resistance of GPE was investigated. The cycle performance of cells assembled with GPE was also tested. The results show that the spinning fibrous membrane with 10 wt% OCP-POSS possesses high electrolyte uptake (660%) and excellent thermal stability. The ionic conductivity of corresponding GPE is 9.23 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at room temperature and the electrochemical stability window is up to 5.82 V; the interface resistance of 10 wt% OCP-POSS modified GPE decreases by 42% after 168 h compared with pure PVDF/PAN/PMMA GPE. Furthermore, cells assembled with 10 wt% OCP-POSS modified GPE show high discharge capacity (166.5 mA h g −1 at 0.1 C) and excellent cycle stability during 50 cycles. The results indicate that the GPE could improve the safety of lithium ion battery and show great potential in lithium ion battery applications.
Graphene oxide (GO) was modified by a novel octa-(aminopropyl) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OA-POSS) to improve its dispersion in a waterborne matrix. The modified GO was incorporated into preparing an eco-friendly conversion coating for the hot-dip galvanized layer. The compositions of the conversion coatings were unaffected by the presence of the mGO, but surface defects were modified. The corrosion current density was decreased to 6.50 × 10 −5 A/cm 2 and the corrosion rate was reduced to 9.69 mm/year by modified GO incorporation. Increased resistances to charge transfer and mass diffusion at one order of magnitude were also obtained. Moreover, the adhesion strength of the as-prepared conversion coating was improved 70% after the mGO addition, which effectively inhibited topcoat exfoliation.
The Z-scheme heterojunction has demonstrated significant potential for promoting photogenerated carrier separation. However, the rational design of all-solid Z-scheme heterojunctions catalysts and the controversies about carrier transfer path of direct Z-scheme heterojunctions catalysts face various challenges. Herein, a novel heterojunction, Cu 2 O@V-CN (octa), was fabricated using V-CN (carbon nitride with nitrogen-rich vacancies) in-situ electrostatic self-wrapping Cu 2 O octahedra. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the separation of carriers across the Cu 2 O@V-CN (octa) heterointerface was directly mapped to the Z-scheme mechanism compared to Cu 2 O/V-CN (sphere). This is because the Cu 2 O octahedra expose more highly active (1 1 1) lattice planes with more terminal Cu atoms and V-CN with abundant nitrogen vacancies to form delocalized electronic structures like electronic reservoirs. This facilitates the wrapping of Cu 2 O octahedra by V-CN and protects their stability via tighter interfacial contact, thus enhancing the tunneling of carriers for rapid photocatalytic sterilization. These findings provide novel approaches for designing high-efficiency Cu 2 O-based photocatalytic antifoulants for practical applications.
The trade-off between proton conductivity and mechanical property is a critical issue to phosphoric acid (PA) doped high temperature proton exchange membranes (HT-PEMs) for using as the electrolytes in various devices. Uniformly introducing additives into polymer matrix is required for improvements on the properties of the polymer membranes. Herein, the hydrophilic and acidophilic octa-amino polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OA-POSS) is synthesized for using as a filler and a crosslinker concurrently to prepare HT-PEMs based on poly(aromatic ether sulfone) (PAES). The PA doped membrane with a crosslinking degree of 10% exhibits a proton conductivity of 97.4 mS cm −1 at 180 °C without humidifying, and an enhanced tensile stress of 8.5 and 2.4 MPa under ambient atmosphere and 110 °C, respectively, which are about 60% and 70% higher than those of the pristine quaternary ammonium PAES membrane. A peak power density of 461 mW cm −2 is achieved by the membrane at 200 °C by fueling the fuel cell with non-humidified H 2 and O 2 without backpressure . Comprehensive characterizations on the structure, PA doping level, anhydrous proton conductivity, as well as dimensional stability and PA retention ability of the prepared membranes are made.
The purpose of the study was to design a novel octa-arginine (R8) modified lipid emulsion (LE) system for the ocular delivery of the lipophilic drug disulfiram (DSF). The influence of the particle size of the lipid emulsions and the presence of R8 on corneal permeation was studied. DSF-loaded lipid emulsions with different particle sizes (DSF-LE1, DSF-LE2, DSF-LE3) and DSF-loaded lipid emulsions modified with R8 (DSF-LE1-R8 and DSF-LE2-R8) were prepared. The Zeta potential of the lipid emulsions was changed from negative to a positive value after modification of R8. The mucoadhesion of different preparations was investigated, and DSF-LE1-R8 was found to produce the strongest mucoadhesion. The in vitro corneal penetration study and in vivo ocular distribution study showed that the R8 modified lipid emulsion (DSF-LE1-R8) with a nano particle size, exhibited the highest permeability and the largest amount of DDC distributed in ocular issues. Coumarin-6 labelled LE1-R8 displayed more homogeneous fluorescence with the deeper penetration into the cornea compared with other preparations at various times. Confocal laser scanning microscopy showed that, in addition to paracellular routes, LE-R8 could also transport across the corneal epithelium by transcellular routes as a result of increased uptake due to the R8 modification. Furthermore, the anti-cataract effect was evaluated and it was found that DSF-LE1-R8 exhibited a marked anti-cataract effect. Therefore, the lipid emulsions with nano-sized particles and modification of R8 were proposed as a potential ocular delivery system to improve the corneal penetration and ocular delivery of DSF.
In this paper, a novel ion-selective and ultra-strong poly-m-phenyleneisophthalamide (PMIA)-based gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) containing fluorinated emulsion and octa(aminophenyl)silsesquioxane (OAPS) nanoparticles is rationally designed for lithium-sulfur batteries by electrospinning. Under the significant effect of OAPS, the PMIA-based GPE acts as a multi-functional separator with exceedingly high electrolyte uptake, exceptional thermal stability and robust mechanical strength. Particularly, the -NH 2 groups of OAPS provide an electronegative environment, which facilitate the lithium ions migration while inhibit the negative polysulfide anions transfer. Thus, the PMIA-based GPE exhibits an effective electrostatic shielding effect to restrain lithium polysulfide on cathode side, while vigorously stimulating the transmission of lithium ions. As a great result, the lithium ions migration, the interface impedance and the reversible rate capacity of the assembled lithium-sulfur battery obtain a marked improvement. Meantime, the cell with the PMIA-based separator, adopting conventional sulfur-carbon black as cathode materials, delivers a high initial capacity of 851.1 mAh·g −1 with capacity retention of 458.3 mAh·g −1 after 800 cycles at 0.5 C rate, accompanied by a low capacity decay of 0.057% per cycle. Therefore, the prepared PMIA separator imbedding with OAPS can be deemed as an extraordinary potential candidate for the application in high-performance lithium-sulfur cells.
