Exploring efficient non-precious metal oxygen electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) is of great importance in electrochemical energy conversion devices like metal-air battery. Among them, carbon-based composites derived from metal-organic framework (MOF) exhibit excellent catalytic performance in ORR/OER. In this paper, Co-MOF-67 was firstly prepared, and then mixed with FeCl 3 ·6 H 2 O and dicyandiamide, followed by a one-step pyrolysis to obtain bamboo-like nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes . For the samples, Fe and Co nanoparticles were encapsulated in the front end of the carbon nanotubes and the presence of new (n)-diamond carbon was unexpectedly found. The obtained catalyst (FeCo@CNTs-60) has an onset potential of 1.04 V for ORR in alkaline solution, which is close to the commercial Pt/C (40 wt% Pt) of 1.05 V. The onset potential of 1.02 V in quasi-neutral solution exceeds that of Pt/C of 0.99 V. In addition, FeCo@CNTs-60 exhibited a low potential difference of 0.81 V between OER and ORR potentials. The alkaline zinc-air batteries, fabricated with the sample as the electrocatalyst of air electrode, exhibit higher peak power density and stability than Pt/C, while the rechargeable batteries present superior cycling discharge/charge stability at 5 mA·cm −2 and 10 mA·cm −2 . In particular, the battery with FeCo@CNTs-60 was conducted for continuous over 1300 h of ultra long-term cycle charging / discharging test at a current density of 5 mA·cm −2 , and it reveals excellent stability with high voltage efficiency and also presents superior cycle charging / discharging stability after replacing the Zn plates and electrolyte.

Two-step carbonization method was reported to synthesize Co–N doped coal tar pitch (CTP) carbon-based electrocatalysts with hierarchical pore structure , high local order degree and efficient Co-N x active structure simultaneously. The synergistic effect of the carbon substrate with highly ordered structure and the Co-N x active sites realized the “Point discharge effect”. The π-π interactions from the CTP aromatic ring sheets and Co-N x promoted the adsorption and dissociation of oxygen molecules, respectively. The increased diffusion coefficient ( D 0 ) indicated the mass transfer of oxygen molecules in the boundary layer was enhanced during the ORR process. Thanks to excellent structural characteristics, ACTP 5 @Co,N-800 exhibited better ORR performance than commercial Pt/C catalyst under alkaline conditions, and the OER activity was improved simultaneously. This work demonstrated a simple and practical strategy for the development of advanced carbon-based electrocatalysts, and also provided novel insights from kinetics perspectives for improving electrocatalytic efficiency.

The development of highly efficient and stable bifunctional catalysts is of crucial importance for advancing the large-scale application of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). This present study introduces a composite catalyst composed of cobalt-based sulfides supported on nitrogen-doped graphene (Co@NG-S2), synthesized through a two-step sulfurization strategy. The first sulfurization stage was successful in achieving co-doping of sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) while enhancing the conductivity and activity of the graphene support. The second sulfurization step promoted the uniform distribution of cobalt-based sulfides and strengthened their interfacial coupling with graphene, thereby significantly improving their bifunctional catalytic performance. Electrochemical characterization revealed that Co@NG-S2 exhibited an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) onset potential of 0.868 V and a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.798 V (vs. RHE). For the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), Co@NG-S2 demonstrated a low overpotential of merely 430 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 , thereby demonstrating exceptional ORR/OER bifunctional activity. In addition, a liquid ZAB assembled with this catalyst achieved a peak power density of 110 mW cm -2 and exhibited cycling stability exceeding 200 hours. This study proposes a novel strategy for the synthesis of high-performance transition metal sulfide-carbon-based catalysts, demonstrating considerable promise for future applications.

Transition metal oxide nanomaterials or nanocomposites containing transition metal oxides have the potential to replace traditional catalysts for electrochemical applications, photocatalysis, and energy storage. Amorphous manganese oxide catalysts were prepared via photochemical metal–organic deposition (PMOD). Through XRD, SEM-EDS, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, HRTEM-EDS, and XPS, we confirmed that amorphous manganese oxide catalysts were successfully prepared. Amorphous catalysts prepared with different photolysis times were compared in terms of their performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and catalyst MnOx-PMOD48 showed the best performance because of its high Mn3+ proportion and electrochemically active surface area. MnOx-PMOD48 showed better ORR/OER performance than the crystalline MnOx and MnOx/Ti4O7 catalysts from our previous work. Following our previous work on crystalline manganese oxide catalysts, we added Ti4O7 during the PMOD process with 48 h of treatment and obtained the amorphous catalyst MnOx/Ti4O7-PMOD. MnOx/Ti4O7-PMOD was supported by Ti4O7 particles, which led to improved stability. The ORR/OER catalytic activity of MnOx/Ti4O7-PMOD was better than that of crystalline catalyst MnOx/Ti4O7-300, which was the best crystalline catalyst in our previous work. We also compared lithium-oxygen batteries assembled with MnOx/Ti4O7-PMOD and MnOx/Ti4O7-300. The battery performance tests confirmed that the amorphous manganese catalyst had better ORR/OER bifunctional catalytic performance than the crystalline manganese catalyst because of its high defect state with more abundant edge active sites and more surface-exposed catalytic active sites.

The exquisitely engineered multifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR), hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) hold significant importance in current research. In this work, layered porous C-FeNC-900 electrocatalyst has been successfully prepared using a NaCl induced pyrolysis strategy based on metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The presence of NaCl during the pyrolysis process not only effectively enhances the porous structures, but also promotes numerous Fe N x active sites and improves the degree of carbon graphitization. Due to the simultaneous construction of highly active Fe N x sites on the graded porous carbon skeleton, the electrochemical accessibility and corrosion resistance are improved. The prepared C-FeNC-900 electrocatalyst exhibits a half wave potential of 0.859 V for ORR in alkaline conditions, exceeds the half wave potential of Pt/C at 0.854 V. Moreover, the results demonstrate C-FeNC-900 has excellent stability, with an initial current density retention of 88.45 % after a durability lasting 10,000 s. At the same time, C FeNC-900 has possesses a potential of 1.67 V at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 during OER testing, with a Tafel slope of 209 mV. The C FeNC-900 also displays HER performance with potential of 405 mV and Tafel slope of 178.4 mV. This study provides a new perspective to construct multifunctional catalysts with well-designed structure for clean energy conversion technologies.

Enhancing electron transfer, mass diffusion, and structural stability through interface regulation and nanostructure design is critical for enhancing the catalytic performance of carbon-based materials. Herein, derived from the 2D CoNi-ZIF nanosheets supported on carbon cloth (CC), a 1D/2D self-supported Mott–Schottky-type heterogeneous electrocatalyst (CoNi@NCNT/CC), composed of CoNi alloy encapsulated in a 1D N-doped carbon nanotube (NCNT), was fabricated via an in situ growth strategy. Theoretical calculations prove that the rectifying contact between CoNi and NCNT is beneficial for regulating the electronic states, resulting in spontaneous electron transfer at the Mott–Schottky interface and optimizing the energy barriers associated with the elemental steps of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) . Moreover, the interconnected structure formed by the NCNT can offer highly accessible channels for active sites, dramatically promoting mass diffusion in the electrocatalytic process. As expected, this electrocatalyst delivers a half-wave potential of 0.860 V and an overpotential of 323 mV at 10 mA cm–2. With excellent bifunctional activity, CoNi@NCNT/CC exhibits promising peak power density and long-term stability when applied in liquid (146 mW cm–2, 510 h) and solid-state (62 mW cm–2, 58 h) zinc–air batteries (ZABs). This work enhances both electron and mass transfer capabilities in Mott–Schottky catalysts. It lays the foundation for the design of bifunctional electrocatalysts with rapid kinetics for next-generation ZABs.

Designing efficient, sustainable, and cost–effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution (OER) reactions is essential for advancing fuel cells and metal–air batteries as clean energy technologies. Despite significant progress in developing non–precious electrocatalysts, the nature of their active sites and interface chemistry remains unclear due to the complexity of the reaction mechanisms. To address these challenges, this study presents a Co–MOF/MXene hybrid electrocatalyst engineered to optimize synergy between dual–metal active sites, achieving high bifunctional activity for both ORR and OER. Notably, our comparative analysis provides clear experimental evidence that sulfur doping disrupts this balance in the reported catalyst. Structural analysis reveals that sulfur substitutes for carbon atoms within the framework, altering the local coordination environment and reducing catalytic performance, contrary to the common assumption that heteroatom doping is universally beneficial. The sulfur–free Co–MOF/MX–1 catalyst exhibits a high ORR onset/half–wave potential of 0.90/0.81 V (vs. RHE), low hydrogen peroxide yield (2.95 %), 90 % current retention, and an ultralow bifunctional gap (ΔE ORR–OER = 0.78 V). We attribute this superior performance to the interplay of Co–N₃–Ti₃C and Ti N active sites, which synergistically optimize oxygen adsorption and electron transfer, aligning with the metaphorical Janus principle of functional balance. This work challenges prevailing views on heteroatom doping and establishes new design principles for non–precious bifunctional electrocatalysts in fuel cells and metal–batteries.

Developing high-efficiency and cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalysts toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an urgent issue for the oxygen-based electrochemical devices. Herein, an interface engineering concept has been proposed to achieve high-performance Ag–PBSC (Ag–PrBa 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 2 O 5+δ ) heterostructure nanofibers catalyst. Benefiting from the significant ligand action and interparticle cooperation of exsolved Ag NPs and PBSC double perovskite, ORR/OER catalytic kinetics have been successfully boosted. In details, the PBSC double perovskite possessing abundant oxygen vacancies can provide oxygen channels and facilitate the transfer of electrons and oxygen. The embedded Ag NPs can deliver superior catalytic durability for the heterostructure interface. As expected, the as-synthesized Ag-PBSC heterostructure catalyst performs a favorable electrochemical performance in the oxygen-based applications. In alkaline media, the catalyst exhibits an excellent activity for ORR ( E onset : 0.88 V vs. RHE and E 1/2 : 0.72 V vs. RHE) and OER (1.67 V at 10 mA cm –2 ). When adopting the Ag–PBSC heterostructure catalyst in LOBs, the corresponding battery provides an outperforming capacity performance (13 000 mAh g –1 ), low discharge–charge polarization (1.37 V), and considerable cycling performance (128 cycles at the restricted capacity of 3 000 mAh g –1 and 400 mA g –1 ). Apparently, the work described here confirms that the interface engineering of perovskites can open up opportunities to develop highly active and durable heterostructure electrocatalysts for multitudinous oxygen-based electrochemical applications.

The development of low-cost and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of importance for the commercialization of green and sustainable energy conversion devices. In this work, noble metal-free XFeCoNiCu (X = Cr, Mg, and Mn) high entropy alloys were prepared with a facile pyrolytic reduction approach while the structure and composition were characterized by XRD, ICP-OES, TEM, HRTEM, and XPS. The prepared quinary alloys demonstrated excellent activity and stability for both ORR and OER, which was even superior to that of commercial Pt/C and RuO₂. Moreover, all three catalysts exhibited considerable potential for bifunctional catalysis, with a ΔE gap of 0.659 V for CrFeCoNiCu, a ΔE gap of 0.692 V for MnFeCoNiCu, and a ΔE gap of 0.727 V for MgFeCoNiCu, which was much better than that of the Pt/C+RuO 2 combination (0.723 V). The superior performance was further revealed by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations with projection density of states (PDOS) and free energy change. The strategy proposed in this study provides an economical approach to design and develop bifunctional electrocatalysts with exceptional performance.

Single-atom catalysts have been extensively researched in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER) due to their tunable coordination environment. However, the linear scaling relationship (LSR) of oxygen intermediate adsorption energies imposes limitations in simultaneously enhancing ORR/OER. Herein, a unique asymmetrically coordinated FeN 3 P 1 single-atom configuration coupled by Fe 2 P nanoparticle is synthesized via a prefabricated Fe-N/P coordination strategy. The accentuated structural distortion induced by Fe 2 P can effectively break the LSR, lowering the energy barriers for ORR/OER. Kinetically, a modulation of OH − concentration by Fe 2 P on the catalytic interface was identified by finite element simulation and molecular dynamics simulation, which can positively facilitate ORR/OER kinetics. The obtained Fe 2 P@FeN 3 P 1 -NC catalyst exhibits excellent bifunctional ORR/OER (∆E = 0.65 V) and a promising application in zinc-air battery. This work provides a valuable insight into simultaneous regulation of thermodynamic and kinetic behavior by tailored structure distortion and enriched surface ions for ORR/OER.

Developing bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with excellent activity and durability is critical for scaling rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we propose an integrated “etching–doping–phosphorization/carbonization” route to synthesize Ni 2 P/Co 2 P heterojunctions anchored on B,N,P co-doped carbon (Ni 2 P/Co 2 P-NPBC). Firstly, boric acid etching of the ZIF(Zn, Co, Ni) generates a bird-nest-like porous framework and simultaneously introduces boron; subsequent phosphorization/carbonization at 1000 °C yields Ni 2 P/Co 2 P nanocrystals uniformly anchored on the B, N, P co-doped carbon. It is confirmed that the carbon framework exhibits abundant defects and contains B, N, and P atoms chemically bonded to the matrix. This structure possesses a high surface area and a through-pore network, which ensure the exposure of active sites and facilitate rapid mass transport. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that boron doping markedly decreases charge density and upshifts the d-band center of Co sites in the Ni 2 P/Co 2 P heterojunction (from −1.26 to −0.87 eV), thereby raising the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) limiting potential (from 0.34 to 0.69 V) and lowering the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) theoretical overpotential (from 0.89 to 0.54 V). Benefiting from these features, Ni 2 P/Co 2 P-NPBC in alkaline media delivers an ORR half-wave potential of 0.88 V (vs. 0.85 V for 20% Pt/C) and an OER overpotential of 264 mV at 10 mA cm −2 (vs. 308 mV for RuO 2 ). A lab-fabricated ZAB achieves an open-circuit voltage of 1.586 V, a peak power density of 180.8 mW cm −2 , a specific capacity of 816.2 mAh g −1 , an energy density of 1159.0 Wh kg Zn −1 , and 600 h stable cycling.

While bifunctional electrocatalysts enabling both oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution (OER) reactions are recognized as pivotal chemical steps for next-generation energy devices, their practical implementation persists as a formidable scientific challenge. In this study, hetero-structured catalyst (CrFeCoNiCu/Mn 3 O 4 /MnO/NC) was successfully synthesized in situ containing both high-entropy alloy and spinel manganese-based oxide by a simple heat treatment process while two control samples (CrFeCoNiCu/Mn 3 O 4 /NC and CrFeCoNiCu/NC) were also prepared. It exhibited excellent catalytic performance and stability for both ORR and OER compared with commercial Pt/C and RuO 2 catalysts. The superior bifunctional performance was further observed with the overpotential gaps (ΔE gap ) of the three electrodes being 0.634 V, 0.655 V, and 0.698 V, respectively, which were lower than those of the combination of RuO 2 and Pt/C at 0.723 V. The enhanced catalytic performance was subsequently corroborated by density-functional theory (DFT). This study proposes an alternative method for the synthesis and design of high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.
