This study develops polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) modified polyamide-imide (PAI) composite coatings as functional interfacial layers for metal gears in automotive balance shaft modules, aiming to improve tribological performance and reduce gear-induced vibration. PTFE/PAI composite coatings containing 0, 1, 3, and 5 wt% PTFE were prepared by air spraying. Their microstructure, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and scratch adhesion were characterized, while their friction and wear behavior was evaluated under dry sliding and engine-oil-lubricated conditions. The 3 wt% PTFE/PAI coating shows the best overall performance. Compared with the neat PAI coating, it reduces surface roughness Sa by 44.1% and increases the critical scratch load (Lc) by 12.7%. Under dry sliding conditions, its average coefficient of friction (COF) decreases to 0.079, and its wear rate decreases by 71.0%. Under engine-oil lubrication, the average COF further decreases to 0.036, and the wear rate decreases by 73.6%. These improvements are mainly attributed to improved coating uniformity and interfacial stability, reduced interfacial shear resistance, PTFE-derived interfacial transfer during dry sliding conditions, and the synergistic lubricating effect of the oil film. The optimized coating was further applied to the driving gear surface in a balance shaft module gear pair. Vehicle-bench vibration tests show that the coated gear reduces the full-band RMS acceleration by 18.0%–27.1% and the 2000–3500 Hz band RMS acceleration by 26.5%–38.3% under idle, steady-state, and speed-cycling conditions. These findings demonstrate that PTFE/PAI composite coatings can simultaneously improve friction reduction, wear resistance, and vibration attenuation of metal gears.

Background Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO, Buerger's disease) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that affects small and medium-sized vessels in the limbs. Although the pathogenesis of TAO remains incompletely understood, elevated levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) have been associated with cardiovascular diseases. This study investigates the mechanism by which PAI-1 activates the NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammatory pathway in vascular endothelial cells through hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), contributing to the progression of TAO. Methods Proteomic analysis was performed on plasma samples from 5 TAO patients and 5 healthy controls to identify differentially expressed proteins (DEPs). In vitro, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were subjected to 1 % hypoxia to mimic TAO conditions. Interventions included PAI-1 knockdown using lentiviral vectors and treatment with the HIF-1α agonist dimethyloxalylglycine (DMOG). Cell viability was assessed using the CCK-8 assay, apoptosis was measured by flow cytometry, and inflammatory factor levels were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Protein expression was analyzed by Western blotting. In vivo, a TAO rat model was established by sodium laurate injection. The severity of limb ischemia was evaluated using gross lesion grading and infrared thermography, while pathological changes were assessed by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and Masson's trichrome staining. Results Elevated levels of PAI-1, HIF-1α, and key molecules in the NLRP3/NF-κB pathway were observed in both TAO rats and hypoxic HUVECs. PAI-1 knockdown significantly improved limb ischemia and suppressed the NLRP3/NF-κB pathway in TAO rats. Compared with the DMOG intervention group, combined treatment with PAI-1 knockdown and DMOG effectively alleviated ischemic symptoms, increased body weight, and reduced the expression of HIF-1α and inflammatory pathway molecules in TAO rats. Conclusion PAI-1 promotes the progression of TAO by activating the NF-κB pathway via HIF-1α. Targeted inhibition of PAI-1 represents a potential therapeutic strategy for TAO.

Multifunctional nanomaterials with simple structure and good biosafety, integrating multimodal imaging and therapeutic functions, can facilitate the development of clinical cancer treatments. Here, a simple but powerful pure bismuth based nanoparticle (Gd-PEG-Bi NPs) was developed from pure Bi NPs and gadolinium-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid-bis-tetradecylamide, which not only shows high quality MRI/CT/PAI triple-modal imaging, but can also be a potent photothermal therapy agent under the guidance of the triple-modal imaging. The Gd-PEG-Bi NPs showed good stability and excellent biocompatibility. In vitro and in vivo study demonstrated that Gd-PEG-Bi NPs have ultrahigh X-ray attenuation coefficient, short T1 relaxation time in MRI, and strong PAI signal. Following the imaging diagnosis, the excellent light-to-heat conversion efficiency of Gd-PEG-Bi NPs was capable of suppressing the tumor growth effectively under near-infrared laser radiation in vivo . Such multifunctional nanoparticles were ideal candidates for cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Carbon fiber reinforced polyamide-imide (CF/PAI) composites are potential candidates for high temperature applications under high stress conditions. However, the structure–property relationships of CF/PAI are not clear. This work presented an experimental investigation into the influence of interfacial modification and heat treatment on the microstructures and mechanical properties of CF/PAI composites. The CF/PAI interfacial interactions were improved by the combined effect of chemical bonding between the PAI-compatible sizing and CF as well as hydrogen bonding between the sizing and matrix. Meanwhile, heat treatment enhanced the modulus of matrix, which was beneficial to stress transfer in the interfacial region. Therefore, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), flexural strength, and flexural modulus of RS 0.6 -CF/PAI composites (the concentration of PAI-compatible sizing agent was 0.6 wt%) were remarkably improved by 81.3%, 23.7%, and 39.1% compared with the control specimen. Microstructure examinations of modified and unmodified CF/PAI composites showed that both interfacial modification and heat treatment played an important role in the transitions of failure mode under interlaminar shear loading and flexural loading. These findings provide an effective method to tailor the microstructures of CF/PAI composites for achieving the desired properties.

The intrinsic compromise between high load-bearing capacity and low friction in polyamide-imide (PAI) coatings severely limits their performance in extreme hydraulic environments. Here, we demonstrate a materials design paradigm that overcomes this trade-off by synergizing interface-engineered ZnO nanoparticles with lubricant polarity control. Dioctyl phosphate (P204) functionalization creates dual-action ZnO@P204 nanoparticles, which enhance interfacial bonding by 38 % and provide exceptional dispersion stability. At an optimal 1.0 wt% loading, these particles template a cohesive, cobblestone-like microstructure that endows the coating with a load-bearing capacity > 100 MPa. When coupled with the polar lubricant PEG400, a triple-action tribological mechanism is unlocked, integrating microstructural reinforcement, shear-induced boundary film alignment, and chemically tailored interfacial slip, thereby achieving ultralow friction (μ=0.011) and wear (2.6 ×10⁻⁷ mm³/(N·m))—a fivefold enhancement over state-of-the-art PAI composites. The fundamental principle of nanoparticle-lubricant cooperativity established herein offers a universal design framework for next-generation intelligent wear-resistant coatings.

Omniphobic membranes have gained extensive attention for mitigating membrane wetting in robust membrane separation owing to the super-repulsion toward water and oil. In this study, a Teflon/PAI composite membrane with omniphobic characteristics was prepared by a vacuum-assisted dip-coating strategy on the PAI hollow fiber membrane. A series of characterizations on morphological structure, surface chemical composition, wettability, permeability, mechanical properties, and stability were systematically investigated for pristine PAI and Teflon/PAI composite membranes. Subsequently, the experiment was conducted to explore the oil–gas separation performance of membranes, with standard transformer oil containing dissolved gas as the feed. The results showed that the Teflon AF2400 functional layer was modified, and C-F covalent bonds were introduced on the composite membrane surface. The Teflon/PAI composite membrane exhibited excellent contact angles of 156.3 ± 1.8° and 123.0 ± 2.5° toward DI water and mineral insulating oil, respectively, indicating omniphobicity. After modification, the membrane tensile stress at break increased by 23.0% and the mechanical performance of the composite membrane was significantly improved. In addition, the Teflon/PAI composite membrane presented satisfactory thermal and ultrasonic stability. Compared to the previous membranes, the Teflon/PAI composite membrane presented a thinner Teflon AF2400 separation layer. Furthermore, the omniphobic membrane demonstrated anti-wetting performance by reaching the dynamic equilibrium within 2 h for the dissolved gases separated from the insulating oil. This suggests an omniphobic membrane as a promising alternative for oil–gas separation in monitoring the operating condition of oil-filled electrical equipment online.

Early diagnosis and effective treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is quite critical for improving patients’ prognosis. The combination of second near-infrared window photoacoustic imaging (NIR-II PAI) and T2-magnetic resonance imaging (T2-MRI) is promising for achieving omnibearing information on HCC diagnosis due to the complementary advantages of outstanding optical contrast, high temporospatial resolution and soft-tissue resolution. Thus, the rational design of a multifunctional targeted nanoplatform with outstanding performance in dual-modal NIR-II PAI/T2-MRI is particularly valuable for precise diagnosis and imaging-guided non-invasive photothermal therapy (PTT) of early-stage HCC. Herein, a versatile targeted organic–inorganic hybrid nanoprobe was synthesized as a HCC-specific contrast agent for sensitive and efficient theranostics. The developed multifunctional targeted nanoprobe yielded superior HCC specificity, reliable stability and biocompatibility, high imaging contrast in both NIR-II PAI and T2-MRI, and an excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (74.6%). Furthermore, the theranostic efficiency of the targeted nanoprobe was systematically investigated using the orthotopic early HCC-bearing mice model. The NIR-II PAI exhibited sensitive detection of ultra-small HCCs (diameter less than 1.8 mm) and long-term real-time monitoring of the tumor and nanoprobe targeting process in deep tissues. The T2-MRI demonstrated clear imaging contrast and a spatial relationship between micro-HCC and adjacent structures for a comprehensive description of the tumor. Moreover, when using the targeted nanoprobe, the non-invasively targeted PTT of orthotopic early HCC was carried out under reliable dual-modal imaging guidance with remarkable anti-tumor efficiency and biosafety. This study provides an insight for constructing a multifunctional targeted nanoplatform for precise and comprehensive theranostics of early-stage HCC, which would greatly benefit the patients in the era of precision medicine.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) poses significant therapeutic challenges due to its aggressive phenotype, high metastatic potential, and lack of targeted treatment options. Herein, we report zinc-doped ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (Zn 0.2 Fe 2.8 O 4 MNPs) as a single-component theranostic platform for magnetic resonance (MRI)/photoacoustic (PAI) dual-mode imaging-guided synergistic therapy that enhances TNBC treatment and suppression metastasis. Through optimization of Zn 2+ doping content, the NPs exhibit superior magnetic and optical properties, allowing high- performance T 2 -weighted MRI and high-resolution PAI under 808 nm laser irradiation, thereby facilitating detailed visualization of tumor vasculature. The same platform enables highly effective photothermal therapy (PTT) under 1064 nm laser excitation, leveraging deep-tissue penetration and a higher maximum permissible exposure. Moreover, the NPs generate localized magneto-mechanical forces (MMF) that disrupted cytoskeletal integrity, and notably suppressed metastatic progression by reversing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). In vivo studies demonstrate complete tumor eradication and significant inhibition of lung metastasis in TNBC models. This work presents a simple yet powerful strategy that integrates multimodal imaging with synergistic therapeutic functions within a single agent, offering a clinically translatable approach for combating TNBC and its metastatic recurrence.

Stem cell therapy has shown great potential in treating a wide range of diseases including cancer. The real-time tracking of stem cells with high spatiotemporal resolution and stable imaging signals remains the bottleneck to evaluate and monitor therapeutic outcomes once transplanted into patients. Here, we developed a photosensitive mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) loaded with mesoporous silica-coated gold nanostars (MGNSs) integrated with indocyanine green for spatiotemporal tracking and imaging-guided photothermal therapy (PTT) in treating breast cancers. The MGNS served as a stable imaging probe with multifunctional properties for photoacoustic imaging (PAI), fluorescence imaging, and PT imaging. Owing to the excellent PT stability of MGNSs, long-term three-dimensional (3D) PAI was achieved to monitor stem cells in real time at the tumor site, while the tumor structure was imaged using 3D B-mode ultrasound imaging. PAI revealed that the photosensitive stem cells reached the widest distribution area at the tumor site post 24 h of intratumoral injection, which was further confirmed via two-dimensional (2D) PT and fluorescence imaging. With this optimal cell distribution window, in vivo studies showed that the photosensitive stem cells via both intratumoral and intravenous injections successfully inhibited breast cancer cell growth and decreased the tumor recurrence rate post PTT. Our results support that this photo-integrated platform with stable optical properties is promising to achieve real-time tracking and measure the cell distribution quantitatively with high spatiotemporal resolution for stem cell therapy.

In this work, we use 2-aminobenzimidazole and 2-aminobenzoxazole to end-cap colorless polymer, PAI TFDB-TPC-6FDA, in order to investigate methods for reducing the CTE value of products and their effects on other properties. Results show that, as the ratio of 2-aminobenzimidazole to the raw material, diamine TFDB, increases from 0:100 to 2:99, the CTE value of products gradually decreases from 20.0 to 12.9 ppm/K (a decrease of 36%). Nevertheless, the CTE value of products rebounds as the dosage of the end-capped groups exceeds this ratio. Among all the products obtained, PAI-1M film has the best overall properties: its CTE is 12.9 ppm/K, T d 5 is 518 ℃, T g is 366 ℃, T S is 191 MPa, T 430 is 85.1%, W A is 85.4% and C A is 0.8%. The two end-capped groups are of highly linear and rigid structures. They also help to enhance the hydrogen bonding between molecules, resulting in a decrease in d -spacing values. The results of molecular configuration simulation and calculation indicate that, using 2-aminobenzimidazole to end-cap the chains of PAI molecules is beneficial for suppressing the formation of the charge-transfer complexes (CTCs), and thereby offsetting impacts of the reduced molecular chain spacing on the transparency of films. Based on these two influencing factors, we confidently conclude that linear and rigid end-capped groups can effectively improve the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of PAI films without damaging their optical properties.

Recently, photoinduced associative ionization (PAI) has been demonstrated to be extremely efficient for the determination of oxygenated volatile organic compounds. However, its application for the determination hydrocarbons has not yet been reported. In this study, associative ionization of nine typical monoterpenes induced by dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light was investigated using a laboratory-constructed PAI time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PAI-TOFMS). Without doping CH2Cl2, VUV light generated ordinary photoionization mass spectra of monoterpenes that were dominated by fragment ions, while the molecular ions were inconspicuous. In contrast, doping with CH2Cl2 resulted in the appearance of mass peaks of the characteristic protonated molecular ions of the monoterpenes. The PAI method significantly enhanced the signals for the monoterpenes. The intensities of protonated molecular ions derived from PAI were amplified by 52 to 108 fold compared with those of molecular ions produced by VUV photoionization (VUV PI). With the high ionization efficiency of PAI toward monoterpenes, the sensitivities of PAI-TOFMS toward limonene, β-ocimene, β-myrcene, β-pinene, and α-pinene were from 291 ± 6 to 1338 ± 20 counts pptv−1 using an acquisition time of 30 s. The limits of detection were from 0.32 to 1.45 pptv, equivalent to between 1.92 and 8.83 ng m−3. The applicability of this ionization mode was further characterized by the determination of monoterpenes from potted Sabina chinensis. This study provides a new and highly efficient ionization method for the determination of plant monoterpenes using mass spectrometry.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is emerging as the primary driver of liver disease‑induced fibrosis. The imperative need for noninvasive biomarkers to ascertain disease progression stage is evident. The present study elucidated the biological roles of hub genes that could potentially serve as diagnostic markers for NASH. Using an in vivo approach, C57BL/6J mice were subjected to a high‑fat and fructose diet (HFFD) for 6, 10, 14, 18 or 22 weeks. Serological biochemical indices were assessed and liver specimens were obtained to identify potential markers linked to the NASH process, employing a comprehensive strategy that combined transcriptomic and histopathological analyses. The HFFD regimen induced hyperlipidemia, obesity and insulin resistance, progressively culminating in NASH with fibrosis over time. The transcriptomic analyses indicated temporal patterns of pivotal gene sets intricately connected to NASH progression, which encompassed processes such as glucose homeostasis, inflammatory responses, reactive oxygen species‑mediated damage, lipid metabolism disruptions and the formation of fibrotic tissue. Among these genes, Serpine1 and Mmp9 demonstrated promising diagnostic potential for NASH, with their intrahepatic mRNA expression levels serving as robust indicators. Moreover, the levels of PAI‑1 (encoded by the Serpine1 gene) and MMP‑9 in the serum of mice demonstrated a parallel increase with the duration of HFFD intervention. In vitro experiments utilizing HepG2 cells further validated these findings, demonstrating a significant elevation in the protein expression levels of both PAI‑1 and MMP‑9 upon exposure to free fatty acids, in agreement with the results of the animal study. Consequently, PAI‑1 and MMP‑9 are promising noninvasive biomarkers for assessing the progression of NASH.
