High porosity and large pore volume of MIL-101 MOF makes it a potential material to be used in membrane separation technology . However, the extra-large pore size and natural hydrophilicity restrict its application in the organic perm-selective pervaporation process. To overcome this issue, Herein, we successfully synthesized ILs@MOFs composite by modifying MIL-101 via coordinative covalent grafting of designed hydrophobic ionic liquids (ILs). Later on, synthesized ILs-modified MIL-101 was embedded into poly (ether-block-amide) (PEBA) polymer to fabricate mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for ethyl acetate perm-selective pervaporation. Incorporation of ILs within the cages and over the surface of MIL-101 not only successfully tuned the pore structure and surface properties of MIL-101 but also inhibits the formation larger aggregates with no obvious defects in resultant MMMs. Moreover, molecular simulation verified that the grafted ILs endowed MIL-101 with better adsorption ability for ethyl acetate and improved interfacial compatibility with PEBA. The optimized MMMs exhibited outstanding separation performance for 5 wt% feed solution at 30 °C, with a separation factor of 207.6 and normalized total flux of 51.8 kg·μm·m −2 ·h −1 . Compared with the pure PEBA membrane, the separation factor and ethyl acetate flux increased by 205.7% and 129.5%, respectively, while the MMMs embedding original MIL-101 showed a decrease in separation factor. This study may inspire the design and construction of high-performance MMMs by employing modification in porous nanomaterial microstructure.

While covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been applied for enhancing membrane separation performance, their influence on membrane formation dynamics remains underexplored. In this study, a polyether block amide (PEBA) interlayer was fabricated on the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) support. On this flat PEBA/PTFE surface, the spreading behavior of COFs/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) could be studied. The incorporation of fluorinated triformylphloroglucinol-benzenediamine (TpBD-F) COFs significantly enhanced the spreading coefficient from −2.99mN/m to −0.86mN/m on the PEBA surface, forming a thinner and more uniform separation layer. Combined with the TpBD-F's intrinsic 1.4 nm hydrophobic nanochannels, these structural refinements facilitated enhanced butanol adsorption and diffusion. The TpBD-F@PDMS-PEBA/PTFE membrane achieved a flux of 4.8 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and a separation factor of 28.1 for a 1 wt% butanol/water mixture, representing a 118% increase in flux compared to the PDMS-PEBA membrane, while maintaining stable performance over 100 h. This work provides both practical and theoretical guidance for designing COFs mixed-matrix membranes.

Polyether block amide (PEBA) foams have attracted considerable attention in advanced footwear technology, owing to their low density and exceptional resilience. However, existing research predominantly focuses on block-type PEBA foams, with relatively limited investigation into bead foam molding techniques. Herein, we introduce an in-mold foaming and molding (IMFM) strategy, where low-melting-point ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) was blended with PEBA to overcome the challenge of poor inter-bead bonding in pure PEBA bead foam parts. The molten EVA acts as an effective interfacial adhesive during the IMFM process. This is demonstrated by a fundamental shift in the fracture mode: from inter-bead failure in pure PEBA parts to intra-bead fracture in the PEBA/EVA blends. Consequently, the optimal formulation with 5 wt% EVA achieved a low density of 0.107 g/cm 3 and a high rebound resilience of 73.8 %, coupled with a 15 % increase in tensile strength (to 0.63 ± 0.04 MPa) and an 84 % increase in elongation at break (to 137 ± 6.6 %). Furthermore, the confined nature of the IMFM process generates sufficient internal pressure to stabilize the cellular structure, preventing cell collapse. This straightforward strategy offers a scalable and feasible approach for the mass production of high-performance PEBA bead foam products.

Phenol is an important chemical that is widely used as a raw material in various industries. However, its high toxicity necessitates effective treatment of phenol-containing wastewater. In this study, membrane-based separation of a phenol/water solution was investigated. A simple and feasible method for tuning the solvent evaporation was developed to fabricate poly(ether-block-amide) copolymer (PEBA) membranes with enhanced separation performance. The solvent evaporation rates and temperatures of three different PEBAs were systematically regulated. PEBA1074, as a promising candidate, was studied using different characterization techniques, such as differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy, to reveal changes in crystallinity and membrane structure under different solvent evaporation conditions. The results showed that a low solvent evaporation rate and high temperature favored the formation of a uniform membrane with an increased number of amorphous domains. A separation factor of 78 and a flux of 1.5 kg/(m2⸱h) were obtained at 80 °C for the separation of 1.5 wt% phenol/water solution. This separation performance is superior to those of previously reported PEBA membranes. This work provides a new and easy method to fabricate PEBA membranes with enhanced separation performance, which can promote the industrial application of pervaporative separation of phenol from wastewater.

A two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheet, as a new type of inorganic material with high hydrophobicity and excellent physicochemical stability, holds great application potential in the preparation of a high separation performance organic–inorganic hybrid membrane. In this work, high hydrophobic MoS2 was embedded in hydrophobic polyether copolymer block amide (PEBA) to prepare PEBA/MoS2 organic–inorganic hybrid membranes. The structure, morphology, and hydrophobicity of the hybrid membrane were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, contact angle goniometry, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy analysis, and atomic force microscopy. The effect of embedding of MoS2 on the swelling degree and pervaporation separation performance of the PEBA/MoS2 hybrid membrane was studied with a 1.0 wt % pyridine dilute solution. The results indicated that with increasing the MoS2 content, the separation factor of PEBA/MoS2 increased first and then decreased, while it showed a downward trend in the permeation flux. When the MoS2 content in the PEBA/MoS2 hybrid membrane was 10.0 wt %, the permeation flux was 83.4 g m–2 h–1 (decreased by 21.5% compared with the pure PEBA membrane), and the separation factor reached a maximum value of 11.11 (increased by 37.6% compared with the pure PEBA membrane). Meanwhile, the effects of feed temperature on the pervaporation separation performance of PEBA/MoS2 hybrid membranes were also studied. In addition, as the PEBA/MoS2 hybrid membrane has excellent thermal stability, it is expected to be a promising material for recovering pyridine from wastewater.
