rGO/CNTs/PEDOT: PSS ternary composites with enhanced thermoelectric properties

Song-Lan Zhang,Cheng Qing,Rui Zhang,Si-Qi Wu,Zi-Heng Xu,Yi-Han Wang,Kai Du,Qin-Jian Yin

Graphene oxide/ carbon nanotubes (GO/CNTs) aerogels were prepared by adjusting the proportion of GO and CNTs, the corresponding reduced graphene oxide/CNTs (rGO/CNTs) aerogels were obtained by thermal reduction. Then, poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonic acid (PEDOT: PSS) was compounded with rGO/CNTs aerogels at a mass ratio of 1:1 to prepare rGO/CNTs/PEDOT: PSS (GCP) composites. Structural analyses revealed the strong π-π interaction between rGO/CNTs and PEDOT: PSS, which leads to the formation of ordered regions. Porous structures of rGO/CNTs aerogels act as conductive network skeleton to promote carrier transport in GCP composites, and the electrical conductivity of GCP composites improves effectively. The optimal electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of GCP5 were 1788.11 S cm −1 and 15.87 μV K −1 respectively. The maximum power factor and ZT merit of GCP5 achieved to 45.03 μW m −1 K −2 and 2.65 × 10 −2 at room temperature, which was almost 43 and 17 times than that of PEDOT: PSS.

Jiang Xiangqian,Chen Weiping,Li Ling,Gao Peng,Ban Chuncheng,Hao Jiandong,Shi Ningqiang

Boron Nitride Aerogels/PEDOT: PSS composite film with good thermoelectric properties were prepared by a simple preparation process. Boron nitride aerogels with a width of less than 1 μm and thickness of approximately 15 nm were prepared by a combination of freeze-drying and high-temperature tubular furnace heating. Then, boron nitride aerogels material was impregnated in a certain amount of 3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene monomer polymer: polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) solution by ultrasonic vibration and magnetic stirring to produce a composite film. The output voltage of the flexible Boron Nitride Aerogels/PEDOT: PSS/Au piezoelectric sensor increases with an increase in the bending angle. When the bending angle is greater than 90°, the output voltage reaches 4.03 V. For the sake of broaden the application prospect of nanocomposite films, flexible wearable thermoelectric devices were prepared. Using the human body as a heat source, the output voltage of flexible thin-film thermoelectric devices can reach 233.6 mV. According to the formula calculation, the Seebeck coefficient is 18.54 mV/K and the thermoelectric power factor is 28.86 μW/mK 2 . With improvements in the energy collection capacity of wearable energy devices, we believe that more work will be done in the future to realize the coordinated development of functionality, comfort and health on the basis of improving energy conversion efficiency.

HEC/PEDOT: PSS-enhanced multi-crosslinked hydrogels for underwater motion sensors

Dongyu Si,Haoxin Shao,Shuo Zhang,Yongkun Hao,Zhiyan Yan

A multi-cross-linked conductive hydrogel (ANHP) with HEC/PEDOT:PSS enhancement is designed for underwater motion sensing. • The ANHP hydrogel exhibits ultra-low equilibrium swelling ratio, outstanding tensile properties and high toughness. • The ANHP hydrogel sensor has high sensitivity, wide strain response range, fast response time and excellent cyclic stability. • The ANHP hydrogel detects multi-joint motions in air and underwater, and provides emergency signal sending via Morse code. Flexible conductive hydrogels, as core candidate materials for next-generation wearable sensors and underwater detection devices, show great potential for applications in Marine engineering, biomedical monitoring, and other fields. However, traditional conductive hydrogels tend to excessive swelling in the water environment due to abundant hydrophilic groups in their network structure, resulting in mechanical degradation and distortion of sensing signals, which seriously restricts their practical application in underwater scenarios. In this study, acrylamide (AM) and N-hydroxymethylacrylamide (NMA) were used as copolymerization monomers, hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) as the core biobased skeleton and multifunctional regulatory medium, and PEDOT:PSS as the high-conductivity functional filler to successfully construct a hydrogel (ANHP) with a multiple cross-linked structure. The test results show that the prepared hydrogel exhibits an extremely low equilibrium swelling ratio (3%), excellent tensile properties (0.614 MPa, 1343.81%), high sensitivity (GF = 3.35), a wide strain response range (0–400%), a fast response time (0.25 s), and outstanding cyclic stability over 500 cycles. The hydrogel-based sensor can stably detect human motions underwater and realize underwater Morse code communication. This study provides an innovative strategy for the development of high-performance underwater flexible sensors and an important reference for the high-performance and multifunctional application of carbohydrate-based functional materials. Self-powered PEDOT: PSS/CSWCNT/Mxenes thermoelectric films and wearable electronics devices

Ye Zhang,Cunbin Zhu,Yongli Chen,Lu Wang,Xilong Huang,Linghong Zeng,Wenyan Lv

In this work, Ti 3 C 2 –Cl is introduced into poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) / single-walled carbon nanotubes (PEDOT: PSS/SWCNT, noted as PPSC) films to prepare ternary thermoelectric films of PEDOT: PSS/SWCNT/Ti 3 C 2 –Cl (PPSCT). The microscopic morphology, structures, and thermoelectric properties of PPSC and PPSCT films show that the introduction of Ti 3 C 2 –Cl results in a tendency of decreasing electrical as well as thermal conductivity , and the Seebeck coefficient is increased. When the content of Ti 3 C 2 –Cl reaches 8 wt%, the conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity of the PPSCT films reach the optimum values of 1683 S/cm, 21.69 μV/K, and 14.97 W/mK, respectively, and the power factor (PF) and thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) are 79.23 μW/mK 2 and 1.58 × 10 –3 . The UPS and Hall effect results reveal that the improvement of the Seebeck effect of PPSCT mainly results from the ternary interfacial energy barrier as well as the change of carrier concentration. In addition, the wearable electronics devices demonstrate an output voltage of 4.5 mV and an output power of 54.36 nW under a 50 K temperature difference. The device displays a good monitoring sensitivity by reaching an output voltage of 0.6 mV at a 7 K temperature difference between the skin and the environment.

Wet-spun PEDOT: PSS/ionic liquid composite fibers for wearable e-textiles

Chuanyun Zhao,Chenyang Zhang,Peng Wang,Ziwei Chen,Yuhang Wang,Jiadeng Zhu,Chunxia Gao,Qiang Gao

Wet-spinning technology plays an essential role in the development of wearable electronics. Poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) fibers have been widely investigated in this field due to their advantages of being environment-friendly and low-cost. They are mainly wet-spun from a coagulation bath containing ethanol and water with additional metal salts. However, the conductivity of PEDOT: PSS fibers spun by this method is low. Here, we propose a novel coagulation bath made of ionic liquid (IL), ethanol, and water, and the resultant PEDOT: PSS fibers could achieve a conductivity of 118.3 S·cm −1 . Furthermore, the fiber-shaped supercapacitor prepared by such PEDOT: PSS/IL fibers reveals an optimal capacitance retention rate of 97 % even after 10,000 cycles, and the capacitance loss of the supercapacitor is only 7 % at −20 ℃. The sensor derived from the PEDOT: PSS/IL fibers has superb sensing capability, indicating their promising applications for wearable electronics.

Si3N4/MoS2-PEDOT: PSS composite counter electrode for bifacial dye-sensitized solar cells

Abdelaal S.A. Ahmed,Wanchun Xiang,Xiaowei Hu,Chen Qi,Ibrahim Saana Amiinu,Xiujian Zhao

Si 3 N 4 /MoS 2 nanocomposite has been fabricated through a solvothermal process and Mixed with polystyrenesulfonate-doped poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene) to prepare (Si 3 N 4 /MoS 2 -PEDOT: PSS) as a counter electrode (CE) for bifacial dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The electrochemical studies confirm that Si 3 N 4 /MoS 2 -PEDOT: PSS CEs exhibits higher catalytic activity compared with pristine Si 3 N 4 /MoS 2 and PEDOT: PSS. The DSSCs with 5% Si 3 N 4 /MoS 2 -PEDOT: PSS composite CE achieves conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.16%, which is comparable to that of the conventional platinum CE (7.50%) and better than those of the pristine Si 3 N 4 /MoS 2 (3.80%) or PEDOT: PSS (4.20%) CEs. Owing to the optical transparency of Si 3 N 4 /MoS 2 -PEDOT: PSS composite CEs, bifacial DSSCs based on 5% Si 3 N 4 /MoS 2 -PEDOT: PSS CE yield 2.03% PCE from rear irradiation. The simple preparation method, high catalytic activity and electrochemical stability demonstrate that Si 3 N 4 /MoS 2 -PEDOT: PSS can be used a transparent CE in bifacial DSSCs.

A PEDOT: PSS-based miniature sodium sensor using polarization technique to improve reproducibility

Zerun Sun,Jie Zhao,Han Peng,Mingjia Zou,Guofeng Cui

A major obstacle in the development of solid contact ion-selective electrodes (SC-ISEs) is the frequent calibration procedures due to the low reproducibility of standard potential(E 0 ) and the unstable signals. To address these challenges, we developed an all-solid state miniature sodium ion-selective electrode (Na + -ISE) based on acid-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polystyrene sulphonate (PEDOT: PSS) as the solid contact layer, in combination with an external polarization technique. Acid doping minimized the Coulomb interaction between PEDOT and PSS, inducing significant phase separation and conformational re-aggregation of PEDOT chains, thus creating more contact points to facilitate charge transport and ion-to-electron transduction. The sensor exhibited excellent potentiometric performance with a detection limit of 5.90378 μM and potential drift of 10.99 μV/h. More importantly, external polarization significantly improved E 0 reproducibility across different electrodes (standard deviation reduced from 57.41 mV to 1.95 mV) and reduced batch-to-batch E 0 variability. The performance of the potentiometric sensor system was evaluated in inactivated fetal bovine serum, and the measurement results were highly comparable to those of the reference methods with deviation of less than 4 %. The electrochemical sensing system developed in this study provides a novel strategy for highly stable sodium ion sensing, indicating promising potential for calibration-free measurement in medical application.

A highly sensitive, eutectic solvent-mediated PEDOT: PSS eutectogel for rehabilitation monitoring application

Yiwei Dong,Bing Ren,Yubing Yang,Yongchang Mu,Yunlan Liu,Chenxu Wang,Jie Li,Jing Han

A eutectic solvent replacement strategy is proposed to synergistically regulate the polymer network and the conductive phase of PEDOT: PSS-based gels. • The optimized eutectogel achieves exceptional fracture strength, toughness and a high gauge factor. • The electrical enhancement involves conformational transition of PEDOT and improved conductivity from metal ion. • The sensor based on PEDOT: PSS eutectogel successfully enables monitoring during post operative cervical spine rehabilitation. Flexible electronics have sparked significant interest for their potential applications in diverse fields. Among these, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT: PSS)-based hydrogels have emerged as star materials in flexible electronics, yet their sensing capabilities remain constrained by compromised mechanoelectrical coordination. Herein, we present an approach through a eutectic solvent exchange strategy that synergistically regulates mechanical and electrical performance. Specifically, molecular engineering via eutectic solvent-enhanced hydrogen bonding strengthens interchain interactions to improve toughness, while electrical engineering involves (i) conformational transition of PEDOT from coiled benzoid to linear quinoid structure and (ii) the ionic conductivity contributed by Fe 3 + further enhances the conductivity. The optimized eutectogel (MSPFe60) achieves fracture strength (0.98 MPa), toughness (9.97 MJ·m −3 ), and gauge factor (GF= 21.2). We further demonstrate MSPFe60’s potential in postoperative cervical spine rehabilitation monitoring through real-time motion signal capture. High-resolution temperature sensor fabricated with composed PEDOT: PSS/CuPc for electronic skin

Jing Li,Hai Nie,Guoyun Zhou,Yan Hong,Wei Meng,Yongkang Zhu,Qinghua Huang

Flexible, biocompatible temperature sensors are of great importance for future developments in wearable electronic skin. Herein, a high resolution, fast response, biocompatible negative temperature coefficient (NTC) temperature sensor comprised of poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) and phthalocyanine copper (CuPc) is developed. The addition of CuPc with high electron mobility to PEDOT: PSS increases the effective electron transition under the action of thermal energy , and thus its thermoelectric performance of the material is improved. The packaged sensor can monitor temperature changes in the range of 20 °C to 80 °C in real time with high sensitivity (0.1940% °C −1 ), linearity (R 2 =0.994) and accuracy (0.1 °C). When the ambient temperature of the sensor changes from 25 °C to 50 °C, the response and recovery time of the sensor are ∼ 1 s. The performance of the sensor has not decreased significantly after 4 weeks of continuous operation, which validates the high reliability of the sensor in the extended working time. Furthermore, the comparison between the PEDOT: PSS/CuPc sensor and commercial infrared thermal imager on different parts of the human body temperature measurement shows that the PEDOT: PSS/CuPc sensor is applicable in electronic skin, medical detection and other fields.

Disposable blood potassium sensors based on screen-printed thick film electrodes

Hui Xu,Xiaoxi Yang,You Wang,Junbao Zheng,Zhiyuan Luo,Guang Li

A sensor based on the screen-printing technique for the rapid blood potassium test was developed. The sensor consists of a thick film potassium ion-selective electrode and a reference electrode. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) was screen-printed on carbon electrodes as an internal solid contact layer for both ion-selective and reference electrodes. PVC membranes with and without selective ionphore valinomycin were coated on the PEDOT/PSS layer to form potassium ion-selective and reference electrodes, respectively. The potentiometric response characters were evaluated. The response time of the sensor was 15 s when less than 15 µL of sample was applied. The sensitivity of the potassium sensor was around 60 mV per decade, while the potentiometric log selectivity coefficients were −3.43 and −3.48 for Na+ and Ca2+, respectively.

Structurally tunable conductive wood sponge incorporated with PEDOT: PSS for enhanced piezoresistive sensor applications

Wu You,Liu Junhui,Hu Zhengchuan,Zhou Weibo,Wu Wei,Wang Jieqiong,Ao Yuhui,Li Ming

Wearable strain sensors are gaining popularity in the field of intelligent electronic devices due to their compactness and mobility. In this study, we presented a wearable, pliable piezoresistive sensor derived from a wooden sponge integrated with the conductive polymer PEDOT. The conductive network of PEDOT: PSS underwent modulation through the incorporation of a cross-linking agent, namely, γ - glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GOPS), aimed at enhancing the sensor's sensitivity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that GOPS cross-linked with PEDOT: PSS. Crosslinking induced by GOPS helped PEDOT to form an ideal-network microstructure, thereby improving the sensitivity. Benefitting from this micro-network structure, the wood sponge/PEDOT:PSS/GOPS (WPG) exhibited a high sensitivity of 5.69 kPa −1 and a fast response time of 111 ms, with exceptional stability and durability (over 500 cycles), making it suitable for detecting subtle muscle changes. Crosslinking induced by GOPS induced PEDOT to form an ideal-network microstructure, thereby improving the sensitivity. The micro-network structure presented a novel approach for designing piezoresistive sensors.

Scalable and High-Performance Infrared Electrochromic Devices Enabled by Solvent-Engineered PEDOT/PSS Films

Wenchao Liu,Leipeng Zhang,Dongqi Liu,Rui Yang,Zetuo Lv,Yike Zhang,Lei Xu,Qiumei Jiang,Yuqiang Wang,Jiupeng Zhao,Yao Li

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) based infrared electrochromic devices (IR-ECDs) show great potential for dynamic thermal management applications. However, their practical deployment is limited by a slow response, poor cycling stability, and scalable fabrication challenges. In this study, we report a scalable, solution-processed strategy for fabricating large-area, flexible PEDOT/PSS IR-ECDs using a one-step solvent post-treatment to selectively remove insulating PSS. This treatment markedly enhances film conductivity, which, in turn, accelerates charge transport and facilitates robust electrochromic switching. The resulting devices demonstrate rapid switching behavior, excellent cycling stability, and a notable mid-infrared emissivity modulation (Δε8–14 μm) of 0.23. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that IR modulation of PEDOT/PSS arises primarily from conductivity changes driven by reversible ion doping/dedoping. When the conductivity exceeds ∼500 S/cm, its long-wave IR reflectance closely follows predictions from Drude theory. This study not only offers new insights into the IR electrochromic mechanism of PEDOT/PSS but also opens up opportunities for scalable, cost-effective, and high-performance thermal modulation technologies with potential applications in adaptive concealment, information display, and intelligent thermal regulation.
