A Novel PEEK Foam with Ultra-High Temperature-Resistant by Temperature Induced Phase Separation

Lingcheng Meng,Jinling Zhang,Shuang Zhao,Desheng Qi,Pan Xu,Shuoqi Wu,Le Wang,Xigui Yue,Zhenhua Jiang

Polyaryletherketone is a kind of special engineering plastics with excellent comprehensive properties, high strength, good stability, and almost insoluble in any common solvent except concentrated sulfuric acid at room temperature. However, its high processing temperature also hinders its application and development in the foam. Here, a series of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and diphenyl polyetheretherketone (PEDEK) composite foams are prepared by temperature induced phase separation, using diphenyl sulfone as solvent. The microstructure, thermal and mechanical properties of PEEK and PEDEK foam are compared. Highly porous PEEK and PEDEK foams with densities ranging from 0.13 to 0.25 g cm −3 , with compressive strength ranging from 0.68 to 2.6 MPa, respectively, are produced. Meanwhile, the introduction of diphenyl structure can effectively improve the performance of PEEK foams at high temperature. It is found that PEDEK foam has a higher operating temperature than PEEK, and the compressive strength of 0.24 g cm −3 foam is still ≈1 MPa at 200 °C.

Superhydrophobicity and anti-icing of CF/PEEK composite surface with hierarchy structure

Pan Lei,Wang Fei,Pang Xiaofei,Zhang Lei,Hao Jianxiong

In this study, a durable, reusable, effective and large-area molding method was proposed to fabricate hierarchical structures on the CF/PEEK composite surface. The hierarchical structures were fabricated using a combination of sandblasting and anodizing treatments on the metal surface. Subsequently, a hot-pressing process was adopted for producing structures that matched the metal templates. The rough surface was modified by (Heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetradecyl)trimethoxysilane with low surface energy to obtain superhydrophobicity. Scanning electron microscopy was utilized to observe the surface morphologies and structure. The chemical composition and roughness were analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy and the laser microscopy, respectively. Wettability was characterized through contact angle measuring instruments, and static and dynamic sliding contact angles were obtained to be 158.23° and 8.38°, respectively. After the abrasion test, the CF/PEEK composite surface still maintained reasonable mechanical stability. Comparing with the untreated sample, CF/PEEK superhydrophobic surface exhibited excellent anti-icing performance with freezing time increasing from 54 to 514 s at − 20° and icing adhesion strength reducing to 30.5 kPa. Although the fabrication of composite surface with water repellency presented here is useful for anti-icing, it can also be applied in other applications that require superhydrophobic surfaces.

Si3N4@SiO2/PEEK core-shell structure ceramic matrix composite prepared by cold sintering and its tribological properties

Dapeng Gu,Guanqun Wang,Suwen Chen,Hongtao Luo,Xiaofan Chen,Ziyu Liu

The traditional high-temperature sintering method cannot achieve the combination of ceramics and polymers for the huge sintering temperature difference. The insufficient interfacial bonding strength of the ceramic matrix is the difficulty in the low-temperature preparation of ceramic-polymer composites. To improve the interfacial bonding strength of Si 3 N 4 (Silicon nitride) ceramic matrix composite, an easy-bonding SiO 2 (Silica) shell was introduced onto the surface of the hard-bonding Si 3 N 4 core by Stober method, to obtain Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 composite. Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 /PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) composites were prepared by the cold sintering process (500 MPa, 240 °C, and transient liquid phase is NaOH solution). The dry tribological properties of Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 /PEEK composites with different PEEK percentages were studied by a ball-disc contact form. It is shown that an amorphous SiO 2 shell with a thickness of 25 nm is chemically bonded onto the surface of the Si 3 N 4 core. The presence of the SiO 2 shell improves the interface bonding strength between Si 3 N 4 ceramic particles. The friction coefficients of Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 /PEEK composites decrease with the increase of PEEK percentage. Compared with Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 composite, the friction coefficient and wear rate of Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 /50 vol% PEEK composite decrease by about 40% and 26%, respectively. The main wear forms of Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 /PEEK composites are abrasive wear and adhesive wear. A mixed lubrication layer, mainly including PEEK, Si 3 N 4 , and SiO 2 , exists simultaneously on the surfaces of Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 /PEEK composite and the counterpart ball, respectively, playing the role of reducing friction and wear.

Preparation of semi-aliphatic polyimide for organic-solvent-free sizing agent in CF/PEEK composites

Chengce Yuan,Dazhi Li,Xueyu Yuan,Li Liu,Yudong Huang

The inert structure and high molding temperature of thermoplastic resin bring new challenges to carbon fiber (CF) sizing agents. Herein, an easily purified semi-aliphatic polyimide (SA-PI) was synthesized as CF sizing agent. The SA-PI has no significant decomposition before 300 °C and a 5% decomposition temperature of 442 °C. Based on the solubility of its polyamic acid ammonium salt, the SA-PI is configured as an aqueous solution for CF sizing. The results show the surface of sized carbon fiber (SCF) is covered with a sizing coating. At the same time, the polar group of the sizing coating increases the surface energy by 28.45%. Compared with bare CF, the tensile strength of SCF is increased by 11.43%, the ILSS and flexural strength of SCF/PEEK increased from 55.71 MPa and 485.34 MPa to68.98 MPa and 523.33 MPa, respectively. In addition, the micro-morphology at the fracture of the composite clearly proves that the sizing agent improves the interface performance of the composites effectively.

Effect of black phosphorus modified by fullerene C60 on the self-lubricating properties of PEEK-based composite coatings

Yuan Gao,Chen Shu,Shengliang Zhao,Wei Wang

Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) has many excellent properties for being used as self-lubricating coatings. In order to further improve the friction performance, black phosphorus (BP) was used as filler to prepare BP/PEEK composite coating . BP-C 60 was formed by modification of BP edge by fullerene C 60 to solve the problem of BP oxidation , so that BP still existed in the sintered PEEK coating. Then, the effects of C 60 and BP-C 60 on the tribological properties of PEEK coating were studied, and the results showed that the wear rate and friction coefficient of BP-C 60 /C 60 /PEEK composite coating were significantly reduced. This was attributed to the synergistic effect of BP and C 60 , which enhanced the stability of BP and reduced coating porosity.

The effect of micron-graphite particle size on the mechanical and tribological properties of PEEK Composites

Yingshuang Shang,Yunping Zhao,Yifan Liu,Ye Zhu,Zhenhua Jiang,Haibo Zhang

The poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK)/graphite composites with good tribological performance were studied. When compared with pure PEEK, the PEEK/graphite composites exhibited a lower frictional coefficient, which was attributed to the layer structure of graphite, which can be easily separated or slide past each other. Considerations were given to both the coefficient of friction and wear rate, and the PEEK/graphite composites showed the optimal tribological behavior when the graphite content was at 25 wt%. This proportion was chosen to investigate the effect of micron-graphite particle size on mechanical and tribological properties of the PEEK/graphite composites. The wear rate of the PEEK composites significantly decreased when the particle size of micron-graphite decreased. Moreover, the results showed that the wear rate had a strong dependence on the mechanical properties of the PEEK composites at the same graphite content level.

Improving Osseointegration Potential of 3D Printed PEEK Implants with Biomimetic Periodontal Ligament Fiber Hydrogel Surface Modifications

Xiaojie Xu,Jiahui Zuo,Huajing Zeng,Yuan Zhao,Zengjie Fan

The bioinertness, poor antibacterial properties, and weak osseointegration of polyether-etherketone (PEEK) limit its clinical application as oral implants. In this study, it is developed a personalized and customizable PEEK implant with multifunctional capabilities through sequential 3D printing, surface sulfonation (SPEEK), and modification using a drug-loaded photocured hydrogel composed of acrylic acid-acrylamide (AA-AM) containing simvastatin-cefepime (SIM-CFP). The modified implant, referred to as SCHSPEEK, mimics the structure of biomimetic periodontal ligament (PDL) fibers. The chemical composition, surface characteristics, and biological properties of SCHSPEEK both in vitro and in vivo are systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that hydrogel modification not only enhances hydrophilicity and reduces surface roughness and friction coefficient, but also improves biocompatibility, drug release, and antibacterial efficacy. Importantly, SCHSPEEK exhibits a significant improvement in osseointegration capacity in vivo. These findings highlight the potential of SCHSPEEK implants to serve as promising orthopedic and dental implants in clinical settings.

Study on the factors affecting the mechanical properties and recovery force of PLA/PEEK blends

Lan Zhang,Suqian Ma,Haohua Xiu,Zhaohua Lin,Zhihui Zhang

It has been found that PLA/PEEK blends have excellent mechanical properties and shape memory properties. In this article, the properties of PLA/PEEK blends were further studied. The mechanical properties of PLA/PEEK blends may be directly or indirectly affected by the molding temperature, molding method and heat treatment conditions. In this paper, PLA/PEEK blends were prepared under different processing conditions (molding temperature, molding method and heat treatment conditions) to evaluate the effects of different processing conditions on the mechanical properties of PLA/PEEK blends. In order to determine the lifting force of PLA/PEEK blends under different conditions, the effects of blends proportion and deformation temperature on the deformation force during the shape memory process were investigated. The experimental results show that the mechanical properties of PLA/PEEK blends can be improved by controlling the preparation conditions, and the deformation time and force can be effectively controlled by the proportion of the blends and recovery temperature.

Synergistically Improving the Thermal Conductivity and Mechanical Strength of PEEK/MWCNT Nanocomposites by Functionalizing the Matrix with Fluorene Groups

Zilong Jiang,Bo Jiang,Boyin Yang,Xin Liu,Yang Yang,Chunling Zhang,Yingshuang Shang,Haibo Zhang

Nanofiller reinforcement is an effective method to prepare high thermally conductive polymer-matrix composites. However, the poor dispersion of nanofillers and high interfacial thermal resistance between the filler and matrix seriously affect the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of composites. To solve this problem, a small amount of conjugated fluorene group is introduced into the polymer chain of poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) to afford the fluorene-functionalized copolymer matrix (FD-PEEK). In an in situ polymerization procedure, the matrix non-covalently binds to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) to allow highly filled PEEK/MWCNT nanocomposites. With the filler dispersion and matrix–filler interfacial bonding improved, the prepared nanocomposites possess both high thermal conductivity and tensile strength. At the optimal ratio of 2 mol% fluorene groups in the polymer chain, the nanocomposite with 10 wt% MWCNT exhibits an excellent thermal conductivity of 2.41 W m −1 K −1 , which is 868% higher than pristine PEEK, with tensile strength remaining 104.3 MPa. The PEEK/MWCNT nanocomposites can be further used as matrix resins to build double-segregated network multi-component composites, which contributes to an innovative strategy to design high-performance thermally conductive materials.

Effects of TaN nanoparticles on microstructure, mechanical properties and tribological performance of PEEK coating prepared by electrophoretic deposition

Lin CAO,Peng ZHANG,Shuang-jian LI,Qi-wei WANG,Da-hai ZENG,Chuan-yong YU,Qing-yang LI,Yu-wen LIAO,Zhi-dan LIN,Wei LI

In order to solve the friction, wear and lubrication problems of titanium, a series of TaN/ployether- ether-ketone (PEEK) coatings were developed by electrophoretic deposition, and the effects of TaN nanoparticles on the microstructure, mechanical properties and tribological performance of coatings were explored. Results manifest that the introduction of TaN nanoparticles into PEEK coatings could improve the deposition efficiency, enhance the resistant deform capacity, increase the hardness, elastic modulus and adhesive bonding strength. Compared with the pure PEEK coating, the friction coefficient of P-TN-3 was greatly reduced by 31.25%. The wear resistance of P-TN-3 was also improved in huge boost, and its specific wear rate was decreased from 9.42×10 -5 to 1.62×10 -5 mm 3 ·N -1 ·m -1 . The homogeneous composite TaN/PEEK coatings prepared by electrophoretic deposition were well-adhered to the titanium alloy substrate, TaN nanoparticles could improve the strength of PEEK coating, and provide wear-resistance protection for titanium alloys.

Surface bioactivation of Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) by magnesium chondroitin sulfate (MgCS) as orthopedic implants for reconstruction of skeletal defects

Lei Xu,Meixin Li,Fenbo Ma,Hongan Zhang,Xiajun Liang,Guoyun Cheng,Ying Li,L.I. Ruiz-Ortega,Dawei Sun,Bin Tang,Chenghe Qin

Polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is clinically used as a bio-implant for the healing of skeletal defects. However, the osseointegration of clinical-sized bone grafts remains limited. In this study, surface-porous PEEK was created by using a sulfonation method and a metal-polysaccharide complex MgCS was introduced on the surface of sulfonated PEEK to form MgCS@SPEEK. The as-prepared MgCS@SPEEK was found to have a porous surface with good hydrophilicity and bioactivity . This was followed by an investigation into whether MgCS loaded onto sulfonated PEEK surfaces could promote osseointegration and angiogenesis . The in vitro results showed that MgCS@SPEEK had a positive effect on reducing the expression levels of inflammatory genes and promoting osteogenesis and angiogenesis-related genes expression levels . Furthermore, porous MgCS@SPEEK was implanted in critical-sized rat tibial defects for in vivo evaluation of osseointegration. The micro-computed tomography evaluation results revealed substantial bone formation at 4 and 8 weeks. Collectively, these findings indicate that MgCS@SPEEK could provide improved osseointegration and an attractive strategy for orthopaedic applications.

Functional and structural construction of photothermal-responsive PEEK composite implants to promote bone regeneration and bone-implant integration

Wenchao Li,Zhengnan Su,Yanru Hu,Lihui Meng,Fang Zhu,Bin Xie,Zilin Zhou,Shuojie Cui,Meng Wang,Qingzhi Wu,Shun Yao

Although poly (ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) has been widely used in orthopedic surgeries, its clinical efficacy is challenged by ineffective bone regeneration and insufficient osteointegration. Herein, inspired by the Mortise-and-tenon joint in traditional Chinese architectural art, a novel strategy has been developed to construct photothermal-responsive PEEK composite implants, with tapered lock-groove edges as proof of concept, by incorporating graphene oxide (GO) loaded with polydopamine-coated nano-zirconia (PDA@ZrO 2 ) into PEEK (namely PGPZ composite). The PGPZ composite exhibits improved mechanical properties, good cytocompatibility and blood compatibility, excellent antibacterial ability and osteogenic activity remotely controlled by near-infrared irradiation (NIR). The cranial defects experiment on rabbits reveals that repeated NIR treatment on PGPZ composite implant significantly accelerates endogenous bone regeneration. More importantly, abundant newly-formed bone has materialized in the lock grooves, forming interlocked Mortise-and-tenon joints with the implant. This study not only pave the way for further clinical applications of the PEEK composite implants with improved bioactivities to promote bone regeneration and osteointegration, but also providing a novel strategy for structural and functional design of various tissue engineering implants.
