In order to explore new substitutes for 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) or poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) and try to develop more ideal bio-based polyesters, several thiophene-aromatic polyesters (PETH, PPTH, PBTH, and PHTH) were synthesized from dimethyl thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylate (DMTD) and different diols, including ethylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol, and 1,6-hexanediol. The chemical structures of obtained polyesters were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H-NMR and 13 C-NMR). Determined by GPC measurement, their average molecular weight ( M w ) varied from 5.22 × 10 4 g/mol to 7.94 × 10 4 g/mol with the molar-mass dispersity of 1.50–2.00. Based on the DSC and TGA results, the synthesized polyesters PETH, PPTH, and PBTH displayed comparable or even better thermal properties when compared with their FDCA-based analogues. From PETH to PHTH, their T g varied from 64.6 °C to −1 ×C while T 5% ranged from 409 °C to 380 °C in nitrogen atmosphere. PETH showed elongation at break as high as 378%, tensile strength of 67 MPa, and tensile modulus of 1800 MPa. Meanwhile, the CO 2 and O 2 barrier of PETH was 12.0 and 6.6 folds higher than those of PET, respectively, and similar to those of PEF. Considering the overall properties, the synthesized thiophene-aromatic polyesters, especially PETH, showed great potential to be used as an excellent bio-based packaging material in the future.

Alcoholysis is a potential method for the degradation of polyesters to their precursor building blocks, which can then be polymerized again to form new qualified polyester materials. This method therefore makes recycling possible in a permanent polymer–monomer–polymer loop. In this study, a series of metal-free tetrabutylphosphonium-based ionic liquids (ILs) were prepared as catalysts for the methanolysis of poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF), which is well known as an ideal alternative to the petroleum-based plastic poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). It was found that anions with stronger electronegativity were more efficient for the methanolysis of PEF. By adjusting the structures of the anions and cations of ILs, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole acetate ([BMIm][OAc]) exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the methanolysis of PEF. The optimization of reaction parameters enabled the [BMIm][OAc]-catalyzed methanolysis of PEF with nearly 100% PEF degradation and a 77.6% dimethyl furan-2,5-dicarboxylate (DMFD) yield at 130 °C for 30 min. Furthermore, [BMIm][OAc] could keep high-activity after using for six times under the optimum conditions. Assisting with 1H NMR, FT-IR and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, an in-depth study was performed on the feasible synergetic catalytic mechanism of [BMIm][OAc] for the methanolysis of PEF, induced by hydrogen bonds formed between reactants and [BMIm][OAc]. Finally, on the basis of experimental results and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it was confirmed that PEF with the spiral motif could be degraded under milder conditions than PET. Therefore, this strategy of using adjustable cation and anion structures in ILs provides an opportunity to develop other more efficient ILs for the alcoholysis of furan-based polymers via a green and mild pathway.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of pulsed electric field (PEF) pretreatment on the NaCl content, protein composition, and microstructure of pork during the marination process. The results showed that needle PEF could promote salt penetration into the center of pork pieces. Under optimal PEF conditions (3.0 kV/cm, 200 Hz, and 2400 pulses), the marination time could be reduced by almost 12 h. Protein characterization also revealed that PEF pretreatment changes myofibrillar protein properties by promoting salt penetration toward the center of pork. Furthermore, microstructural analysis demonstrated that the enhanced marination effect could be attributed to the PEF treatment-induced expansion of gaps between muscle bundles. Industrial relevance In this study, a PEF-assisted curing technique significantly (P < 0.05) improved salt penetration into the center of pork. Reducing the differences between internal and external salt concentrations can produce a more homogeneous marinade and reduce the marination time. Our findings suggest that PEF pretreatment is a promising and effective pretreatment technique for curing meat products.

The bio-based polyester, poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF), was modified by 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (CBDO) via copolymerization and a series of copolyesters poly(ethylene-co-2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol 2,5-furandicarboxylate)s (PETFs) were prepared. After their chemical structures and sequence distribution were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H-NMR and 13 C-NMR), their thermal, mechanical, and gas barrier properties were investigated in detail. Results showed that when the content of CBDO unit in the copolyesters was increased up to 10 mol%, the completely amorphous copolyesters with good transparency could be obtained. In addition, with the increasing content of CBDO units in the copolyesters, the glass transition temperature was increased from 88.9 °C for PET to 94.3 °C for PETF-23 and the tensile modulus was increased from 3000 MPa for PEF to 3500 MPa for PETF-23. The barrier properties study demonstrated that although the introduction of CBDO units would increase the O 2 and CO 2 permeability of PEF slightly, PECF-10 still showed better or similar barrier properties compared with those of PEN and PEI. In one word, the modified PEF copolyesters exhibited better mechanical properties, higher glass transition temperature, good barrier properties, and better clarity. They have great potential to be the bio-based alternative to the popular petroleum-based poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) when used as the beverage packaging materials. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is an emerging biobased polyester well-known for high gas barrier properties as well as high tensile modulus and strength , but PEF modification is still desired to improve its crystallization rate, toughness and even strength. In this study, PEF/Montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were in-situ synthesized via melt polycondensation of dimethyl furandicarboxylate and ethylene glycol in the presence of a commercially available organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT), i.e., DK2, a montmorillonite clay modified with octadecyl hydroxyethyl dimethyl ammonium. The structure of nanocomposites was characterized by ATR-FTIR, 1 H NMR, WAXD and TEM, and their thermal and mechanical properties were assessed with DSC, TGA and tensile test. The OMMT was grafted with PEF chains and therefore exfoliated, at least partially, in the PEF matrix with intrinsic viscosity over 0.7 dL/g. With respect to pristine PEF, the nanocomposites containing 2.5 wt% DK2 showed significantly improved melt crystallization, tensile modulus and strength.

Poly(ethylene- co -1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PECF), with different contents of trans - or cis -CHDM isomers, was synthesized to investigate the influence of CHDM configuration on its properties. Before properties investigation, their chemical structures , composition and molecular weight as well as molecular weight distribution were determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Their thermal and dynamic mechanical properties as well as barrier properties were measured by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and gas permeability tester. Results showed that the PECFs could be changed from amorphous polyester (PECF-trans 25) to highly crystalline polyester (PECF-trans 98) by increasing the content of trans -CHDM from 25% to 98%. The melting temperature of PECF-trans 98 was as high as 252 °C and its crystallization half-time was only 15 s. Besides the tensile modulus and strength, the O 2 and CO 2 barrier property of PECFs were all increased with the increasing content of trans -CHDM. When the content of trans -CHDM was higher than 55%, PECFs showed excellent gas barrier properties, which was better or comparable to those of PEN and PEI.

The closed-loop recycling of plastics is crucial for polymer sustainability. Bio-based PEF can be depolymerized via glycolysis, but catalysts often exhibit low efficiency. In this work, a titanium-based metal-organic framework (MOF), MIL-125, was synthesized with optimized metal-to-ligand ratios (MIL-125-5 with a Ti/PTA ratio of 1:5) to achieve a high specific surface area of 1719.6 m 2 /g and abundant Lewis acid sites. This catalyst demonstrated exceptional performance in PEF polymerization, yielding a polyester with a M n of 3.7 ×10 4 g/mol, a PDI of 1.9, and low metal residue (176.6 ppm Ti content), under mild conditions (210 o C for esterification and 230 o C for polycondensation). Comprehensive structural and catalytic characterization of MIL-125 was conducted through a combination of advanced techniques. XPS confirmed the existence of crystallographically distinct Ti 3+ /Ti 4+ active sites. The N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms indicate the presence of microporous and mesoporous structures, with a pore volume of 0.65 cm 3 /g. while TGA revealed exceptional thermal stability exceeding 300 o C. Furthermore, NH 3 -TPD and EPR spectroscopy revealed abundant Lewis acid sites and oxygen vacancies, respectively. These structural features demonstrated a strong correlation with catalytic activity, as further validated through DFT calculations. Remarkably, the same MIL-125 catalyst facilitated closed-loop recycling by enabling depolymerization of PEF via glycolysis at 180 o C and atmospheric pressure, followed by repolymerization without catalyst separation or purification. This process produced recycled PEF (rPEF) with an Mn of 2.7×10 4 g/mol and properties comparable to virgin PEF, underscoring the catalyst's reusability and efficiency. This study establishes MIL-125 as a green, high-performance catalyst for sustainable polyester production and recycling.

This study systematically investigated the effects of pulsed electric field (PEF) treatments on the gelation properties and protein structural modifications in surimi. Through experimental analyses complemented by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we elucidated the molecular mechanisms underlying these changes. Notably, moderate PEF treatment (15 kV/cm, 40 min) significantly enhanced gel strength and water-holding capacity (WHC) by 34.68 % and 11.55 %, respectively, compared to untreated samples. However, excessive parameters (> 20 kV/cm or > 60 min) induced protein over-aggregation through disulfide bond crosslinking, resulting in deteriorated gel quality. MD simulations revealed that PEF-induced alterations in molecular dipole moments accelerated conformational rearrangement of α-helical structures. The synergistic interplay between reinforced hydrogen bonding networks and optimized hydrophobic interactions was identified as the primary determinant of improved gel functionality. These findings collectively highlight the critical balance required in PEF parameter selection for surimi processing optimization.

In this study, the effects of pulsed electric field (PEF) treatments on the electro-permeability of vesicles made from dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC), dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC), Soya phosphatidylcholine (soya PC), cholesterol and a binary mixture of them encapsulated 5(6)-Carboxyfluorescein (5(6)-CF) were investigated, based on the electric field strength of 0–40 kV/cm and treatment time of 0–4.8 ms. Results indicated that the electro-permeability of lipid membrane was directly related to the composition of lipid bilayers membrane of vesicles. As compared to DPPC vesicles, DOPC vesicles were much more sensitive to PEF treatment. For the DOPC vesicles, the 5(6)-CF release percentage (R) was 9.24%, 20.12%, and 30.62% after PEF treatment at 20, 30, and 40 kV/cm for 4.8 ms treatment time, respectively. However, for the DPPC vesicles, it was only 1.84%, 4.02%, and 6.51%, respectively. On the other hand, the electro-permeability of DOPC vesicles was greatly affected by the addition of DPPC. The electro-permeability of DOPC vesicles was decreased sharply with the increase of DPPC molar ratio. Under the PEF treatment with 40 kV/cm and 1.2 ms, it was observed that the R of DOPC vesicles decreased markedly from 27.56% to 9.80% with the molar ratio of DPPC increased from 0 to 40%.For the soya PC vesicles, the R was dropped sharply from 48.13% to 24.11% with the molar ratio of cholesterol increased from 0 to 50%. Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed that the decrease of electro-permeability of soya PC vesicles with the addition of cholesterol was responsible for the incorporating of cholesterol into hydrocarbon partition of lipid bilayers, leading to the order arrangement of hydrocarbon chain of phospholipids , which was resulted an increase in the thickness of bilayers membrane and decrease in the fluidity of bilayers membrane. However, for the mixture of DOPC and DPPC (DOPC/DPPC) vesicles, there has no effect on the conformation of hydrocarbon chain of phospholipids and the fluidity of bilayer membrane of DOPC/DPPC vesicles with the addition of DPPC.

Bio-based 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) can be used to produce poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF), which has a great potential for barrier packaging, and so forth. Herein, the first two steps of the esterification reaction of FDCA with ethylene glycol (EG) were investigated. The dissolution rate of FDCA in EG is fast, the solubility of FDCA in EG and monohydroxyethyl 2,5-furandicarboxylate (MHEF) reaches 159.12 and 489.84 g kg −1 at 180 °C, respectively. The initial esterification of FDCA with EG to form MHEF is a zero-order reaction ( k 1 = 266.77 × 10 −3 mol kg −1 min −1 ) with an activation energy of 114.52 kJ mol −1 ; the esterification of MHEF with EG to form bis(hydroxyethyl) 2,5-furandicarboxylate (BHEF) is a first-order reaction ( k 2 = 9.72 × 10 −3 min −1 ) with an activation energy of 86.12 kJ mol −1 . These results identified accurate parameters for the dissolution and esterification processes of FDCA in EG, which provide important guidance for the polymerization of FDCA polyesters. Graphical

Poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF), a sustainable alternative to poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), exhibits superior gas barrier properties but faces challenges in impact toughness and slow crystallization, limiting its industrial adoption. This study introduces a novel terminal modification strategy using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to synergistically enhance PEF's performance through π–π stacking interactions, plasticization, and crystallization optimization. By incorporating PAHs (9-PBA/1-NA) as terminal modifiers, modified PEFB x and PEFN x polyesters demonstrate accelerated crystallization (15 vs. 33 min for neat PEF) and increased crystallinity (53% vs. 41%). The PAH-driven π–π stacking and V-shaped B(OH) 2 groups in 9-PBA promote chain folding and ordered packing, significantly improving oxygen barrier performance (40.9% reduction in permeability coefficient) and mechanical properties. Remarkably, PEFB 0.5 achieves a 277% increase in elongation at break and a 229% enhancement in tensile modulus compared to unmodified PEF. Furthermore, the method integrates reactive extrusion with injection molding, offering a scalable and industrially viable route for producing high-performance PEF with balanced processability, barrier properties, and mechanical strength.

Effects of different growth temperatures on cytoplasmic membrane fluidity and phospholipids phase transition temperature (T m ) of Salmonella typhimurium and resistance to pulsed electric field (PEF) inactivation, as well as the expression of stress-related genes and fatty acid biosynthesis-associated genes were investigated. Results indicated that the PEF resistance of S . typhimurium increased as growth temperature increased. S . typhimurium cultivated at 10 °C exhibited the lowest PEF resistance with the reduction of 4.23 log 10 CFU/mL, while the reduction of 2.10 log 10 CFU/mL was found in S . typhimurium cultivated at 45 °C under the same PEF treatment, due to the up-regulation of the expression of fabA gene, which was characterized by the lowest T m of membrane phospholipids and the greatest membrane fluidity. Although the expression of alternative sigma factors were altered by growth temperature, these genes were not essential for S . typhimurium to develop PEF resistance, suggesting that the PEF resistance modified by growth temperature could be caused by alterations in membrane fluidity. Industrial relevance Pulsed electric fields (PEF) treatment has been widely applied in nonthermal pasteurization and increasingly focused on synergistic combinations with other techniques such as thermal treatment, sonication and antibacterial agents to improve the efficacy of PEF to inactivate micro-organisms. Our results indicated that S . typhimurium cultivated at relatively lower temperature was easily inactivated by PEF, due to the up-regulation of the expression of fabA gene, which was characterized by the lowest phase transition temperature of cytoplasmic membrane phospholipids and the greatest membrane fluidity. Therefore, the underlying mechanism of alterations in PEF resistance of S . typhimurium induced by growth temperature was explored to achieve better understanding of microbial inactivation by PEF.
