Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) that operate from room temperature to high temperatures (e.g., 200 °C) are desired for fuel cells used in vehicles and combined heat and power systems. In this work, polyethyleneimine-filled sepiolite nanorods (PEI@SNR)-embedded poly(2,5-benzimidazole) composites (ABPBI/PEI@SNR) were synthesized in-situ to enhance their proton conductivity and minimize phosphoric acid (PA) leaching. They were then applied in PEMFCs between room temperature and 200 °C. The physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the composite membranes were characterized. The composite membranes showed enhanced thermal, oxidative, and dimensional stability and achieved proton conductivities above 0.01 S/cm from 40 to 200 °C at a relative humidity of 0–100%. This performance was attributed to abundant hydrogen bonds between PA, ABPBI, and PEI, and the strong retention of bound water within sepiolite nanorods (SNRs). The maximum power density of the cell based on the PA-doped ABPBI/5PEI@SNR composite membrane reached 0.16 W/cm 2 at 80 °C and 0.27 W/cm 2 at 180 °C and an anhydrous environment, which were respectively 2.2 and 1.5 times higher than those of the PA-doped ABPBI membrane. The cell performance was much better than previously reported zeolite-embedded polybenzimidazole membrane-based PEMFCs, indicating that the composite membranes have good application prospects in PEMFCs operating over a wide temperature range.

Ni-P coatings including TiN nanoparticles are prepared by electroless plating on Ti plate, which is used as bipolar plates of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are used to characterize the surface morphology and phases of the coatings, respectively. Corrosion resistance of Ni-P and Ni-P/TiN coatings are measured in the simulated solution of PEMFCs. The interfacial contact resistances (ICR) between carbon paper and bipolar plates are conducted by applied different forces. Potentiostatic polarization tests are prepared at different voltage by bubbling air and H2 at 70 °C, respectively. It is indicated that TiN particles as a core enclosed by Ni-P are entrapped into the coating by SEM images. Comparing to Ni-P coatings, the Ni-P/TiN coating shows better behaviors of corrosion resistance and low ICR. The good corrosion resistance is attributed to the formation of coating and the compact surface morphology. Hence, Ti metal with electroless plating Ni-P/TiN coating is a potential candidate for applying in the bipolar plates of PEMFCs

Microporous layers (MPLs) play a pivotal role in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) by regulating water management and reactant transport. However, conventional MPLs with single-sized pores lack the structural versatility to simultaneously meet the requirements for efficient gas transport and water removal, which severely limits the performance improvement of PEMFCs. This study fabricates an MPL with a graded pore structure through solvent-controlled differentiation and a stepwise coating–sintering process, which synergistically enhances capillary-driven gas supply and liquid water removal. Multiphysics simulations confirm that the gradient structure improves water drainage and gas diffusion, and this improvement is reflected in the superior performance of the graded MPL compared with conventional single-layer structures under varying backpressure conditions. The MPL with a graded pore structure exhibits the highest output performance of 1860 mW cm–2 under hydrogen/air operation at a high relative humidity of 100%, representing an improvement of approximately 36.8% over the commercial MPL, and still delivers a 10.4% enhancement under 75% relative humidity. The notable performance gains achieved underscore the practical potential of the fabrication method, while our findings establish critical structure–transport correlations for MPL optimization in advanced PEMFCs.

Precisely constructing the well-defined proton transport platform and studying its transport behavior are of great importance yet remain challenging. Here, a Zr-BTB-X nanosheet via post-synthetic modifying Zr-BTB with terephthalic acid (BDC) and trimesic acid (BTC) is developed, which coordinate to the unsaturated Zr₆ clusters. The increased –COOH groups endow Zr-BTB-BTC nanosheets significant improvement in proton conductivity, achieving 490.9 mS cm −1 at 80 °C and 100% RH, compared to 2.19 mS cm −1 for the original Zr-BTB nanosheets. Density functional theory calculations and water adsorption studies reveal that the formation of enriched water networks induced by the –COOH groups facilitates efficient proton dissociation and reduces the proton transport barrier. The assembled Zr-BTB-BTC lamellar membrane, retaining high conductivity properties of nanosheet, reaches 242.4 mS cm −1 at 80 °C and 100% RH. It also delivers a superior performance in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), achieving ultrahigh peak power (0.91 W cm −2 ), maximum current density (3.59 A cm −2 ), and good durability (100 h of OCV test).

The Ni-P/TiN coating was used as bipolar plate by electroless plating on Ti. Surface morphology and phase structure of the coatings were characterized by SEM and XRD, respectively. Corrosion resistance of Ni-P and Ni-P/TiN coating was measured in the simulated solution of Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The interfacial contact resistance (ICR) was conducted by applied different forces. SEM images indicated that the particles of core–shell structure were formed on the surface of coating on Ti substrate. The core–shell structure was composed of TiN core and Ni-P electroless plating shell. Compared with Ni-P coatings, the Ni-P/TiN coating showed better corrosion resistance behaviors and low ICR (below 10 m Ω cm − 2 under pressure of 200 N/cm 2 ) . TiN particles and distribution of core–shell were in favor of the formation of coating and compact surface morphology. The good conductivity was attributed to the compact surface morphology of coating. The Ni-P/TiN coating showed excellent interfacial conductivity and good corrosion resistance at applied high potential in simulated solution of PEMFCs.

Platinum (Pt) is practical available candidate for satisfying the requirements of anode catalysts in the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Totally dispersed Pt is an ideal way to minimize Pt use, and the develop of Pt-single-atom based hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) catalysts should be carried out in a multi-component/-function model system with a clear active site (Pt-single-atom) geometric structure. This work combines the well-defined Na 6 [H 2 PtW 6 O 24 ] clusters and multi-function carbon dots (CDs) to show the highly efficient Pt-single-atom catalyst design for HOR in acid. The mass activity and exchange current density of POMs/CDs (2.18 wt% Pt) achieved 86.72 A mg pt −1 and 3.78 A mg pt −1 , respectively, which were 9.5 and 14 times that of 20% Pt/C. Also, this catalyst exhibits better performance than 20% Pt/C in the test of single cell, including higher open circuit potential (OCP), higher power density and better long-time stability. In particular, CDs can effectively improve the catalytic performance of POMs by enhancing the electron acquisition ability of Pt in POMs, the conductivity of composites, the structure stability, the ability to resist toxicity and accelerating the transfer of H + produced on POMs.

One of the important factors affecting the actual service life of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is that catalysts agglomeration and carbon carrier corrosion will be accelerated by operating temperatures. In this paper, through a simple F-doping strategy, F-doped carbon-supported PtZn i-NPs (PtZn i-NPs/F-C) catalysts were prepared. The metal-support interaction (MSI) was enhanced by doping the element F. This also inhibited catalyst aggregation and increased Pt element oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. Aside from this, the electronegativity of F prevents reactive oxygen species (ROS) from attacking the carbon support during the reaction process, ensuring that after 5000 CV cycles at 80 °C, the catalysts still maintain ∼0.856 V as a half-wave potential, only losing 9 mV, much higher than the half-wave potential of commercial Pt/C after 5000 CV cycles (∼0.777 mV). This work provides a brand-new perspective on solving the problems caused by the increase in the operating temperature of PEMFCs, and also provides a new idea for the preparation of electrocatalyst for ORR.

Pt-based alloys demonstrate superior catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), yet their instability due to transition metal leaching poses a critical challenge. While structurally ordered PtM intermetallic compounds (IMCs) exhibit enhanced stability compared to disordered alloys, their conventional high-temperature synthesis often induces particle aggregation and diminished catalytic performance. Herein, we present a solvent-free gas-phase dispersion strategy leveraging the volatility of acetylacetonate precursors to synthesize ordered PtCo IMC nanoparticles (PtCo/C-IMC) with ultrasmall size (3.0 nm) and uniform compressive lattice strain. The PtCo/C-IMC catalyst delivers exceptional ORR activity (0.92 A mg Pt −1 at 0.9 V) and durability (6.8 % mass activity decay after 100,000 cycles). In H 2 -air PEMFCs, it achieves a peak power density of 1.53 W cm −2 at 0.6 V and demonstrates outstanding operational stability, with voltage losses of only 17 mV (0.8 A cm −2 ) and 21 mV (1.5 A cm −2 ) after 30,000 accelerated durability test (ADT) cycles, surpassing the DOE 2025 targets and outperforming most reported catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and post-ADT characterization reveal that the engineered compressive strain strengthens Pt-Co atomic interactions, optimizes the electronic structure, and elevates the vacancy formation energy of Co. These effects enhance both catalytic activity and stability, offering a scalable pathway for the design of advanced PEMFC catalysts.

For further enhance the proton conductivity and long-term performance of the BOPBI (branching ratio of 6%) with rigid triazine structure with large free volume, a large volume of positive polymeric ionic liquid that can be crosslinked is introduce into the system, and then KH-560 crosslinker with 3% quality fraction is introduced into the system. When the CBOPBI-PIL-X membranes are soaked in KOH solution, The proton conductivity of CBOPBI-PIL-X membranes (X = 0%–40%) was great enhanced due to the formation of ion-pairs (X + - H 2 PO 4 − ), which can be used as both a proton donor and receptor, providing a binding site for proton transmission. Since the high free volume provided by the branched structure can help the membrane absorb more phosphoric acid, and the unique mechanism of action of PIL can provide new proton transport channels, among these membranes, the ultimate tensile strength (4.68 MPa) of PA-doped CBOPBI-PIL-30% film was great and the membrane can also gain excellent proton conductivity (155.8 mS cm −1 at 180 °C). Due to the addition of KH-560, the Si-O-Si crosslinking network can resist the oxidative free radical attack effectively, which substantially improves the oxidation stability of membranes. After 144 h of testing, all CBOPBI-PIL-X membranes are not broken. And after 240 h of acid retention testing at 160 °C/0% RH condition, the best PA retention ratio of CBOPBI-PIL-X membranes can still reach 83.7%, which can prove that the membranes have excellent performance. Therefore, CBOPBI-PIL-X membranes are expected to be used in high-temperature proton exchange membranes (HT-PEMs).

Iron and nitrogen co-doped FeNC catalysts with symmetric Fe-N 4 as the active site are the most promising alternative to noble metal catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, the symmetric structure in the Fe–N 4 site endows oxygen intermediates with strong binding energy, which hinders the activity optimization of the active center. In this work, an asymmetric configuration (Fe-N 3 SC) is constructed to alleviate the electron localization caused by the d – π conjugation of Fe-N 4 . The asymmetric configuration can effectively reduce the splitting energy of the Fe-3d orbital, leading to a decrease in the energy barrier for the electrons to fill in the e g orbitals. Increased electron occupancy in the e g orbitals reduces the bond order/adsorption of the oxygen-containing intermediates on the active site, which leads to increased oxygen reduction (ORR) activity. The results of this work highlight the possibility of asymmetric configurations in manipulating and optimizing electron transfer and spin regulation of single-atom catalysts.

Polybenzimidazole/ionic liquid (IL) composite membranes with cage-like cross-linked structure were prepared based on polybenzimidazole containing hydroxyl groups (PBIOH30), 3-(triethoxysilyl) propyl isocyanate (IPTS) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dihydrogen phosphate (BMI-DHPH). The basic characteristic of imidazole rings in IL enhanced the phosphoric acid (PA) doping ability of the obtained cPBI-IL X membranes, thus, the proton conductivity of which was elevated. The cage-like cross-linked structure was formed under acidic conditions, and such structure can not only strengthen the mechanical properties of cPBI-IL X membranes but also prevent the leakage of the IL to some extent. The IL retention ability of cPBI-IL 10 was significantly improved, the residual weight percentage of IL was 71.6 wt%, while that of PBI-IL 10 membrane without cage-like cross-linked structure was only 2 wt%. The membrane with 8 wt% IL content exhibited the highest proton conductivity of 0.133 S cm −1 at 160 °C.

The commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) calls for the development of active and durable Pt-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by means of a cost-effective and environmentally benign protocol. We report herein an all aqueous phase preparation of carbon supported Au-modified Pt–Co alloy catalyst (Au/Pt–Co/C), which involves the dimethylamine borane co-reduction of aqueous Pt(II) and Co(II) precursors to form a Pt–Co/C catalyst and the ethanol reduction of an aqueous Au(III) precursor to form Au/Pt–Co/C. This Au/Pt–Co/C catalyst not only shows a greatly enhanced ORR activity like the homemade Pt–Co/C and state-of-art Pt–Co/C(com) catalysts as compared to the Pt/C catalyst but also exhibits a much higher durability over the Pt/C(com), homemade Pt–Co/C, and state-of-art Pt–Co/C(com) catalysts in accelerated degradation tests (ADTs) with both half-cell and single-cell configurations. Specifically, the maximum power density of a PEMFC involving the Au/Pt–Co/C cathode suffers only a 6% loss after 30 000 cycles of a standard ADT while that involving the state-of-art Pt–Co/C(com) suffers a 37% loss. This research provides an alternative route to prepare efficient and durable Pt-based ORR catalysts toward a widespread application of PEMFCs.
