Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) have been listed under the Stockholm Convention and are being progressively phased out worldwide; environmental prevalence and human exposure to other poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) with different structures are on the rise. However, the toxic effects and mechanisms of other PFASs remain unclear. This study explored and compared the estrogenic effects and underlying mechanisms of eight typical PFASs. PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, and perfluorooctane sulfonamide (PFOSA) promoted the proliferation of MCF-7 cells, with PFOSA exhibiting the strongest estrogenic effect among the eight targeted PFASs. Specifically, for the PFASs with the same number of carbons and different functional groups, the estrogenic effect is in the decreasing order of PFOSA (sulfonamide group) > PFOS (sulfonic acid group) > PFOA (carboxylic acid group). The observed enhancement was likely caused by estrogen receptor (ER) activation, as an ER antagonist significantly inhibited the pro-proliferation effect. Luciferase reporter gene assays, fluorescence competitive binding assays, and molecular docking simulation were used to furnish supplementary evidence for the direct action of PFASs on the ER. PFOA, PFHxS, PFOS, and PFOSA can activate ER transcriptional activity and bind to the ER, demonstrating that ER is a potential target of PFASs. For PFOA, PFOS, and PFOSA, the rank order of binding affinities with ER in fluorescence competitive binding assays and the calculated binding energy in molecular docking simulation were consistent with the results of the cell proliferation experiment and luciferase reporter gene assays, suggesting that receptor binding affinity also plays a critical role in the activation effect of the ER pathway. Overall, our results indicate the estrogenic effects of other PFASs through ER-mediated pathways and elucidate the molecular mechanism for the different activity of eight PFASs, as well as suggest that PFOS precursors require more attention when determining the environmental risk of PFASs.

Herein, we develop a versatile strategy for developing a Fe 3 O 4 -NH-β-CD-BP ILs based sorbent by installing synergistic bonding sites for simultaneous removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and heavy metals from contaminated water. This sorbent with its quaternary ammonium cation achieved remarkable removal efficiency (∼99 %)for both short and long chain anionic PFASs in pure water as compared to previous β-CD based materials. Moreover, when subjected to a challenging metal salt matrix, the adsorbents revealed that long-chain PFASs primarily relied on electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, while short-chain PFASs depended solely on electrostatic attractions. The results indicate that the sorbent exhibits outstanding adsorption capacities for PFCAs, PFSAs and Cr (VI) coupled with fast adsorption kinetics featuring equilibrium times 5, 4 and 2 h, respectively. The simultaneous removal of PFOA, PFOS and Cr (VI) in multi-component systems (electroplating plant wastewater) was also determined due to their dual sites rendered by cationic and β-CD groups. The adsorption of PFCAs and Cr (VI) was significantly influenced by the initial pH compared to the sorption of PFSAs. Additionally, the viologen based sorbent also showed better photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. In summary, these results revealed the outstanding adsorption capacity and convenient regeneration process make the adsorbent as a promising candidate for efficient and rapid removal of PFASs from other pollutants.

The effects of sex and pregnancy on the bioaccumulation and tissue distribution of legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in Chinese water snakes were investigated. The bioaccumulation factor of PFASs showed a positive correlation with their protein–water partition coefficients (log KPW), and steric hindrance effects were observed when the molecular volume was > 357 Å3. PFAS levels in females were significantly lower than those in males. The chemical composition of pregnant females was significantly different from that of non-pregnant females and males. The maternal transfer efficiencies of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid were higher than those of other PFASs, and a positive correlation between the maternal transfer potential and log KPW was observed for other PFASs. Tissues with high phospholipid content exhibited higher concentrations of ∑PFASs. Numerous physiological changes occurred in maternal organ systems during pregnancy, leading to the re-distribution of chemicals among different tissues. The change in tissue distribution of PFASs that are easily and not-so-easily maternally transferred was in the opposite direction. The extent of compound transfer from the liver to the egg determined tissue re-distribution during pregnancy.

Bacterial infection and severe inflammatory responses are major barriers to successful wound healing. Drug delivery systems have shown promise in precision medicine by enhancing the targeting and protection of therapeutic agents. However, their use is limited by challenges such as biocompatibility issues, structurally complex, high manufacturing costs, suboptimal drug loading, unstable release, and premature immune clearance. Although targeted delivery aims to improve efficacy, it may increase the risk of toxicity. Consequently, conventional non-carrier drugs often remain more practical and effective. Emerging vehicle-free systems with multifunctional capabilities show promise for precise targeting, controlled release, reduced toxicity, and simplified manufacturing. Here, we rationally designed and established a vehicle-free perfluoroalkyl material (PFAS)–gallium composites (PFASs@Ga) through introducing gallium (Ga) in PFASs, taking advantage of the collective merits of Ga’s antibacterial and pro-healing properties and PFAS’s well-recognized oxygen absorption, carrying of oxygen, chemical inertness, and tunable physicochemical properties. Extensive characterization showed well-defined morphology, elemental configuration, and distinct profiles of gallium ion release. The PFUnA@Ga composite improves gallium integration, Ga release, and O 2 delivery. This allowed it to demonstrate potent broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against bacteria, including MRSA and E. coli , which are known to be resistant. In a MRSA -infected wound model, PFUnA@Ga enhances wound closure and reduces bacterial load, thereby promoting regeneration and angiogenesis. The downregulation of pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages and the upregulation of anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages and CD31 + endothelial cells, representing immunomodulatory effects that facilitate inflammation resolution and vascularization. Results confirmed the composites’ antibacterial activity and accelerated wound-healing efficacy. This multifunctional composite offers a novel approach for advanced wound management. More specifically, the synergistic approach combines metal–ion mediated bacterial inactivation with sustained oxygenation to support infection control and tissue repair.

Due to the environmental persistence and various health problems associated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), they have come under increased public scrutiny. However, the efficient extraction of PFASs from complex media remains challenging. Herein, an olefin-linked covalent organic framework (COF-CN) has been prepared via a Knoevenagel condensation reaction , followed by reduction using LiAlH 4 to form an amine-functionalized COF (COF-NH 2 ). The characterization results demonstrated that the crystal structure was maintained during the post-modification step. Isothermal and kinetic adsorption studies showed the higher affinity of COF-NH 2 toward PFASs. Based on density functional theory , the adsorption mechanism of the stable six-member-ring structure formed between COF-NH 2 and PFASs via hydrogen bonding was tentatively revealed. After optimizing the solid-phase microextraction parameters, legacy and emerging PFASs were efficiently extracted from fish using the COF-NH 2 coating, followed by detection using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry . The method exhibited ideal linearity, low limits of quantification, excellent precision, and high relative recoveries. Finally, the bioconcentration kinetics for goldfish was studied, which can provide a feasible platform for investigating the accumulate ion and toxicity of PFASs.

Long-term ingestion or exposure to food contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) may cause potential harm to human health. Due to the low contents of PFASs in complex food matrices, it is of great significance to develop adsorbents with excellent properties to enrich PFASs before analysis. Herein, calix[4]arene (CX4) was used as building block to prepare ordered crystalline covalent organic frameworks (COFs). The perfect combination of the host-guest recognition ability of CX4 and the porosity of COFs makes the CX4-COFs selective and high adsorption capacity for linear molecular PFASs (261–1055 mg/g). The adsorption behavior and mechanism were verified by isotherm adsorption experiments and simulation calculations. The CX4-COFs were then used as adsorbents for membrane solid-phase extraction (M-SPE), combined with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) to determine PFASs in food. The method has low detection limits (0.11–0.28 ng/kg) and good precision (1.3%−9.8%), and has been successfully applied to the simultaneous enrichment and determination of six PFASs in fish, shrimp and shellfish. Satisfactory recoveries (79.9%−118%) were obtained. This study provides a new strategy for preparing CX4-COFs containing macrocyclic molecules with different morphologies and expands the application of COFs as attractive enrichment media for sample pretreatment .

Emerging contaminants (ECs) in water, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), require more efficient separation technology for water treatment . Although nanofiltration (NF) has exhibited the potential to remove small organic molecules, enhancing water permeance without sacrificing the rejection of the membrane is still a big challenge. Herein, we fabricate a novel thin-film composite (TFC) membrane by introducing a hyaluronic acid (HA) interlayer . The hydrogen bonds between HA and amine monomers depress the mass transfer of piperazine, which is beneficial for constructing a thinner and denser polyamide (PA) layer. As a result, we finally obtained a novel TFC membrane with a PA layer with a more negative surface, reduced thickness, crumpled structure and higher degree of cross-linking. Moreover, the obtained TFC membrane exhibits an excellent water permeance of 29.53 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and high rejection for Na 2 SO 4 (94.90 %) and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) (93.4 %). In light of the low cost and ease of performance, our study proposes a new, green strategy for fabricating TFC NF membranes for environmental water treatment that could feasibly be extended to industrial applications.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) can occur in water sources, pass through drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs), to the consumer taps. This investigation was carried out to present the transportation behaviors of 17 PFASs, involving seven DWTPs with different water sources, raw water transportation modes, treatment processes, and DWDS structures in eastern and northern China. The results showed that the long-distance raw water transportation pipelines removed a certain extent of PFASs from raw water, probably due to the accumulation of loose deposits. The long-distance, open-channel South-to-North water diversion increased PFAS contamination risk. In the DWTPs, granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption and ultraviolet radiation removed less than 25% of PFASs, but ozonation-biological activated carbon (O 3 -BAC) was superior to GAC alone in removing PFASs. Loose deposits couldsignificantly influence PFAS accumulation and release within branch-structured DWDSs. In loop-structured DWDSs, finished water with different PFAS characteristics could mix along the pipeline, with the corresponding DWTP as the center, ultimately forming a relatively uniform distribution in the entire DWDS.

This study established novel and high-throughput strategies for the simultaneous analysis of 30 fluorinated emerging pollutants in different matrices from the shrimp aquaculture system in eastern China using UHPLC-MS/MS. The parameters of SPE for analysis of water samples and of QuEChERS methods for sediment and shrimp samples were optimized to allow the simultaneous detection and quantitation of 17 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and 13 fluoroquinolones (FQs). Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection of 30 pollutants for water, sediment, and shrimp samples were 0.01–0.30 ng/L, 0.01–0.22 μg/kg, and 0.01–0.23 μg/kg, respectively, while the limits of quantification were 0.04–1.00 ng/L, 0.03–0.73 μg/kg, and 0.03–0.76 μg/kg, with satisfactory recoveries and intra-day precision. The developed methods were successfully applied to the analysis of multiple samples collected from aquaculture ponds in eastern China. PFASs were detected in all samples with concentration ranges of 0.18–0.77 μg/L in water, 0.13–1.41 μg/kg (dry weight) in sediment, and 0.09–0.96 μg/kg (wet weight) in shrimp, respectively. Only two FQs, ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin, were found in the sediment and shrimp. In general, this study provides valuable insights into the prevalence of fluorinated emerging contaminants, assisting in the monitoring and control of emerging contaminants in aquatic foods.

The residual fluorion (F – ) generated during per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) treatment presents a new environmental burden, while minimum attention has been redirected to its removal. In this study, Al-based electrocoagulation (EC) technique was optimized to effectively remove the residual F – during PFASs wastewater treatment. At EC’s optimal operating conditions, it can achieve over 81.7 % removal efficiency within 30 min. Furthermore, EC exhibited a stable performance on removing F – across a wide range of pH (3–11), and could form stable flocs under neutral pH conditions. The in-depth characterization of flocs has revealed the dynamic change of Al-F species along the EC process, and removal mechanisms were proved to be a combination of complexation, ion exchange, hydrogen bonding and precipitation. In addition, the optimized EC showed stable removal efficiency of F – with the co-existence of multiple PFASs. Hence, we have effectively removed the residual F – during PFASs wastewater treatment, and provide new insights to better understand the defluorination mechanisms in the EC process.

Hydrated electron (eaq–) reduction is an efficient pathway for degrading per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Nanoconfined spaces can shield eaq– from quenchers in bulk solution and shorten diffusion distances, thereby enhancing utilization efficiency. However, the role of eaq– precursors and PFASs configurations within nanoconfined domains in governing eaq– transport remains unclear. In this study, polyindole (Pind) was synthesized within layered double hydroxide (LDH) interlayers as an eaq– precursor, while perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was simultaneously enriched through electrostatic interaction. Although the eaq– yield increased with Pind loading, the PFOA degradation rate followed a unimodal trend, reaching a maximum at 27.2% Pind loading, where complete degradation was achieved within 3 h. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed stronger hydrophobic interactions among Pind molecules than between Pind and PFOA, leading to a configuration where PFOA surrounded Pind aggregates. With increasing Pind loading, this arrangement forced more eaq– to travel longer distances to attack C–F bonds, reducing their utilization efficiency despite higher overall yields. This “yield-transport” self-antagonism underscores the critical role of nanoconfined configurations in eaq– transport and utilization efficiency and provides mechanistic insights for the rational design and optimization of nanoconfinement systems.

The sensitive and selective detection of per - and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) is critically important due to associated ecological and health risks. In this work, we developed a novel magnetic covalent organic framework (COF), Fe 3 O 4 @TP-3F, via an in situ Schiff base reaction. This innovative material features a core-shell structure with high surface area, uniform porosity, and robust magnetic responsiveness, enabling efficient PFASs extraction from aqueous samples. Coupling this advanced adsorbent with magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), we developed a sensitive analytical platform (MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS) for PFASs monitoring. The method exhibits excellent linearity over a broad concentration range (1–800 ng/L), with ultralow limits of detection (0.23–1.2 ng/L), ensuring trace-level quantification in complex environmental matrices. Application of the method to real water samples from two lakes demonstrated high accuracy and practical utility. Notably, multiple PFASs, including PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFDA, and PFUnDA, were identified in Tangxun Lake. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed the adsorption mechanism involves hydrogen bonding and fluorine‑fluorine interactions with the COF framework. This work established a novel COF-based magnetic adsorbent and reliable analytical method for the effective detection of PFASs, offering a powerful tool for environmental monitoring and risk assessment
