New methodology to improve compatibility of PLA/PBAT blends using HO-PBAT-OH-initiated polymerization of lactide

Yunlong Xu,Zhibo Zhao,Yanan Li,Yiwen Yang,Wenbo Wang,Le Zhang,Long Yu

A new methodology to fabricate the compatibilizer for PLA/PBAT blends through ring-opening polymerization of lactide using hydroxyl-terminated PBAT (HO-PBAT-OH) as macro-initiator in a high-shear reactor was developed. The modified polylactic acid (PLA-b) with weight-average molecular weights ( M w ) in the range of 1.42 × 10 5 to 2.96 × 10 5  Da were synthesized using 1%∼4% content of HO-PBAT-OH with M w of 4.86 × 10 5  Da. FTIR and NMR spectroscopy confirmed the covalent attachment of PBAT segments to the PLA backbone through ester linkages, establishing a well-defined block architecture. This block structure substantially improved the interfacial compatibility between PLA-b and PBAT, as evidenced by a refined morphology with reduced PBAT domain sizes and enhanced interfacial adhesion. DSC and DMA revealed a convergence of the glass transition temperatures ( T g ) of the two constituent polymers, indicating the improved miscibility. Rheological measurement also confirmed the improvement of miscibility through presenting a more coherent viscoelastic response. Notably, PLA-b/PBAT blends at a 70/30 wt% ratio exhibited a superior balance of mechanical properties compared to a conventional PLA/PBAT physical blend of the same composition, delivering a tensile strength of 42.6 MPa, an exceptional elongation at break of 280% and impact strength of 28.11 kJ/m 2 . This approach provides a simple and economically viable route to high-performance PLA/PBAT blends with an optimized combination of strength and ductility.

Evolution of Core−Shell structure in PLA/PBAT-g-GMA/TPS ternary blends via multi-Indicator molecular simulations

Yuanchao He,Guangxiang Zhang,Huijia Lu,Xiaorong Wang,Ying Yu,Shiguang Wan,Xin Liu,Miao Xie,Guiyan Zhao

This study utilized molecular dynamics simulations to incorporate a poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix, poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) modified with glycidyl methacrylate (PBAT-g-GMA), and thermoplastic starch (TPS) into an amorphous unit cell via a one-step blending method. Additionally, five PLA/PBAT-g-GMA/TPS (70/30/0, 70/25/5, 70/20/10, 70/15/15, 70/10/20) amorphous unit cells were created using a stepwise blending method. The radial distribution functions, hydrogen bond distribution, cohesive energy density, mixing energy, and diffusion coefficient of the blend components were analyzed. The optimal composition, identified through simulations, was subsequently prepared, and its glass transition temperature (T g ) was determined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The fracture surface was examined via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results showed that the one-step blending model did not form a distinct core-shell interface, whereas higher PBAT ratios in the stepwise blending model exhibited clearer core-shell interfaces. The 70/20/10 composition model exhibited the highest mixing energy (1067.0 kcal/mol). The number of hydrogen bonds at the PBAT-TPS interface was maximized in this model, indicating the strongest interfacial interaction. The predicted T g of the 70/20/10 composition model was 59.9 °C, differing by only 0.6 °C from the measured value. The core-shell structure was observed on the frozen fracture surface, confirming the reliability of the model predictions. This study systematically analyzed the formation, distribution, and interaction of the core-shell interface in the PLA-based ternary blend system using molecular dynamics simulations and multi-indicator analysis. An optimal blending ratio was identified, providing a theoretical foundation for future material design and optimization.

It balances high breathability, moisture permeability, waterproofing and antifouling performance, solving the stuffiness problem of conventional medical films. • Synergistic action of ZnO@SiO 2 nanoparticles and micro/nanostructures delivers an antibacterial rate of 97.69% against Escherichia coli. By regulating radiative properties, it enables passive cooling with a surface temperature approximately 10 °C lower than commercial fabrics. • With PLA/PBAT as the biodegradable matrix, the film can be completely degraded through enzymatic, composting and alkaline pathways. It eliminates white pollution and secondary contamination risks of traditional medical protective films at the material source. Medical protective films are crucial for public health, yet traditional materials often compromise wearer comfort and pose significant environmental challenges due to their non-degradable nature. Herein, a biodegradable and multifunctional composite film is fabricated via micro-extrusion roll forming, composed of a polylactic acid (PLA)/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) matrix featuring surface and interface micro/nanostructures. The surface micro/nanostructures and interconnected microporous interface endow the medical protective film with a water vapor transmission rate of 203.47 g m −2 h −1 , ensuring excellent breathability and wearing comfort. The synergistic effect of uniformly dispersed ZnO@SiO 2 nanoparticles and the surface micro/nanostructures achieves an antibacterial rate of 97.69% and effectively inhibits contaminant adhesion. Furthermore, the micro/nano structures and micropores are engineered to manipulate radiative properties, resulting in a passive cooling effect with a surface temperature approximately 10 °C lower than that of commercial fabrics. Crucially, addressing the critical issue of plastic pollution, the film exhibits excellent biodegradability through enzymatic, composting, and alkaline pathways, offering a sustainable solution that mitigates the secondary environmental pollution caused by conventional medical films. This work provides a feasible strategy for the scalable production of next-generation medical protective materials that seamlessly integrate wearable comfort, high performance, and environmental sustainability. Multifunctional interface engineering: Tailoring mechanical and UV-resistant properties of PLA/PBAT-based composites via epoxy-functionalized carbon dots

Sen Qun,Song Liu,Lijia Yang,Meiru Du,Jiani Zhou,Yu Zhu,Ying Ling,Liping Yuan,Shaohua Zeng,Jun Guan

Epoxy-functionalized carbon dots (OCDs) are synthesized via a hydrolytic condensation. • OCDs provide robust chemical interfacial bridges between PLA and PBAT. • Nanoscale OCDs cores refine the phase morphology via physical interactions. • Interfacial compatibility between PLA and PBAT is enhanced via a synergy of physical and chemical interactions. • OCDs give PLA/PBAT-based composites superior UV resistance. Biodegradable polymers like poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) hold significant promise for sustainable medical materials; however, their widespread application, particularly in demanding fields such as medical packaging materials, is hindered by inherent challenges including poor interfacial compatibility in blends and a general lack of functional properties like ultraviolet (UV) resistance. To address these limitations, this work introduced an innovative interfacial engineering strategy utilizing epoxy-functionalized carbon dots (OCDs) as a multifunctional compatibilizer for blending PLA and PBAT. The surface epoxy groups of OCDs underwent in-situ ring-opening reactions with terminal functional groups of PLA and PBAT during melt processing, establishing robust covalent bridges that fundamentally enhanced interfacial adhesion. This chemical compatibilization, synergized with the nanoscale effect of well-dispersed OCDs, led to a remarkable improvement in mechanical properties, with optimal increases of 47.7% in tensile strength and 23.4% in tensile modulus. Simultaneously, the intrinsic UV absorption of OCDs conferred exceptional UV-resistant capability to the PLA/PBAT-based composite, with absorption intensities at key wavelengths enhanced by up to 775%. Furthermore, the PLA/PBAT-based composites demonstrated modified thermal degradation behavior and improved melt strength. This multifunctional OCDs-filled PLA/PBAT composite integrated enhanced mechanical properties and excellent UV-resistant performance, demonstrating significant potential for advanced medical applications.

Modified cellulose nanocrystals based on SI-ATRP for enhancing interfacial compatibility and mechanical performance of biodegradable PLA/PBAT blend

Minqi Sun,Ling Zhang,Chunzhong Li

To make up for the brittleness of poly(lactic acid) (PLA), people usually introduce flexible poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) which greatly reduces the strength and limits toughening effect due to unfavorable immiscibility of the blends. Herein, functionalized biodegradable cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were used as enhancement to simultaneously improve strength and toughness of PLA/PBAT blend. To improve the interaction between PLA and PBAT, poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) was grafted on the surface of CNC via a surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization reaction. After the addition of CNC-PGMA30, the phase size of PLA/PBAT (70/30 wt%) reduces dramatically, showing improved interfacial compatibility between PLA and PBAT. Meanwhile, prepared PLA/PBAT/CNC1.0-PGMA30 composite has tensile strength of 49.6 MPa and elongation at break of 268.5%, demonstrating considerably increased strength and toughness in comparison to the pure PLA/PBAT blend.

Fiber treatment impact on toughness and interfacial bonding in epoxidized soya bean oil compatibilized PLA/PBAT bamboo fiber composites

Kehinde Olonisakin,Huiping Lin,Pan Haojin,Wen Aishi,Haopeng Wang,Ran Li,Zhang Xin-Xiang,Wenbin Yang

Biodegradable plastics such as Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) are commonly used in composite fabrication and applications. However, their inherent properties limit their use. In this study, Epoxidised soyabean oil (ESO) compatibilized PLA/PBAT was filled with modified bamboo fiber (BF). The BF was modified in a two-stage environmentally friendly process involving steam treatment followed by a new approach to hydrophobic natural fiber modification with naturally occurring fatty acid (myristic acid) (MA). Then, the ESO/PLA/PBAT/BF composite was fabricated, and the influence of the new fiber modification method on the toughness and interface bonding of the composite was studied. The composite was characterized using mechanical analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), water contact angle measurement, and statistical methods. The melting behavior was also studied using Vicat softening and heat deflection temperatures. The ESO compatibilisation improved the compatibility of the PLA/PBAT blend, resulting in a continuous PLA/PBAT phase, as evidenced by the interface modulus, glass transition temperature , and fractured surface. The modification of BF enhanced its dispersion in the matrix and improved interfacial adhesion. Elongation at break and impact toughness were improved by more than double compared to neat PLA. Adding PBAT and modified BF to PLA resulted in a thermally stable composite. The statistical analysis results suggested that BF modification and BF loading significantly influenced the composite strength and toughness (P ≤ 0.05). The tough and flexible composite material can used in flexible/lightweight and impact-resistant applications, consumer goods, and heat shields.

Preparation of PLA/PBAT/Anthocyanins@ZIF-8 Composite Films via Casting Method and Their Antibacterial Activity and Application for Pork Preservation

Sheng Liu,Feifei Wang,Shuran Xing,Guifang Chang,Shijie Li,Jianwen Bu,He Zhu,Litao Wang

Pork is highly perishable during storage, leading to enormous economic losses and potential food safety hazards. Anthocyanins (ANTs) possess excellent antioxidant and antibacterial activities, but their poor stability in practical applications limits their industrial application. To address these issues, a novel composite preservation film was prepared by the four-sided applicator solution casting method, using polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) as matrix materials and ANTs@ZIF-8 as functional filler. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) encapsulated ANTs to enhance its stability and achieve sustained release, while the PLA/PBAT was selected for its good biodegradability, mechanical and barrier properties. The structure and properties of the PLA/PBAT/ANTs@ZIF-8 composite films were investigated, and the results showed that ANTs@ZIF-8 nanoparticles had stable dispersibility in the matrix, which effectively improved the compatibility between nanoparticles and the film matrix. The prepared composite films exhibited excellent tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (EAB) and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), as well as good antibacterial activity againstE. coliandS. aureus. Furthermore, the practical pork preservation performance of the films was investigated, and the results demonstrated that the composite films could effectively reduce the pH value, water loss, color difference, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) content and malondialdehyde (MDA) content of fresh pork during storage, successfully extending the shelf life of pork to 12 days. This study develops a multifunctional, biosafe, and biodegradable PLA/PBAT composite film incorporated with ANTs@ZIF-8, providing a feasible strategy and scientific reference for the design and development of high-performance active biodegradable packaging materials.

Yuwei Liu,Min Yang,Jiuao Wang,Hao Yue,Zongliang Du,Xu Cheng,Haibo Wang,Fei Cheng,Xiaosheng Du

Blending thermoplastic starch (TPS) with poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and poly (butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) is considered as one of the most promising ways to produce fully biodegradable and renewable biopolymers. However, these composite biopolymers face challenges such as, poor mechanical performance, inferior water vapor and ultraviolet barrier resistance, and weak antibacterial property due to the incompatibility of hydrophilic TPS with hydrophobic PLA and PBAT. In this work, Ag nanoparticles were uniformly in-situ grown on cellulose nanocrystal to prepare a novel silver nanoparticles loaded-cellulose nanocrystal (Ag-CNC). Then, antimicrobial TPS/PLA/PBAT composite films with enhanced mechanical properties, superior water vapor barrier capacity and highly UV-shielding effect were fabricated by introducing Ag-CNC and oligo (lactic acid) grafting starch (OLA- g -ST, an eco-friendly compatibilizer) into TPS, PLA and PBAT matrix. As expected, the introduction of Ag-CNC significantly improved antibacterial property and UV-shielding effect (283 % increased) of TPS/PLA/PBAT composite films. Moreover, the incorporation of OLA- g -ST and Ag-CNC into the composites resulted in a notable enhancement of the mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break increased by 77.95 % and 63.23 %, respectively) and water vapor barrier capacity (40.8 % increased) of TPS/PLA/PBAT composite films. Hence, the innovative fully biodegradable composite films displayed remarkable potential in the field of renewable biopolymers as well as multifunctional packages.

The extractable non-volatile organic compounds from PLA/PBAT-starch blend biodegradable food contact materials and the effect of polymeric contents: Insights from chemical space

Fei Xie,Hanke Li,Jinxin Liang,Zhenwei Liu,Tongmei Ma,Canghao Xie,Ben Dong,Dan Li,Sheng Chen,Huai-Ning Zhong

574 NVOCs comprising 367 oligomers identified in 70 batches of PLA/PBAT-starch FCMs. • Chemical spaces reveal distinct yet characteristic distribution patterns for the oligomers. • PLS-DA discloses intrinsic connections between the NVOCs and the sample categories. • The contents of 142 NVOCs change monotonously with the PBAT/PLA contents. • 16 high-risk NVOCs are prioritized with 14 of them being carcinogenic or genotoxic. The burgeoning demand for biodegradable food contact materials (FCMs) based on polylactic acid (PLA), poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), and starch arouses increasing chemical safety concerns, yet the non-volatile organic compounds (NVOCs) therein remain insufficiently investigated. Herein, 574 NVOCs were identified in 24 batches of blend pellets with designated polymeric contents and 46 batches of PLA/PBAT-starch-based food contact articles (FCAs) by dissolution-precipitation coupled with untargeted liquid chromatography – high resolution mass spectrometry, and exhibited characteristic distribution patterns in the molecular-descriptor-derived chemical spaces. Chemometric analyses further identified the oligomers as essential markers to differentiate samples of various categories. Furthermore, the contents of 142 NVOCs were found to correlate with PBAT contents, due to either inherent presence in the polymers or starch-induced transformation. In addition, hazard identification unveiled that molecule complexity (FMF) of the NVOCs was a statistically significant indicator of chemical hazards, and subsequent risk assessment identified 16 potentially high-risk NVOCs, wherein 14 of them are subjected to carcinogenic or genotoxic risk, and 10 of them are identified via migration assays. This work presents an effective paradigm for uncovering the sophisticated chemical profile of biodegradable FCMs, thus being beneficial to fostering the chemical safety of FCMs and related products.
