Poly (m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) is a high-performance polymer known for its exceptional thermal stability, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance, making it an ideal candidate for advanced material applications. This study presents the synthesis, characterization, and analysis of poly (m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA)/SiO 2 nanocomposites and porous PMIA films. PMIA/SiO 2 nanocomposites were prepared using in situ interfacial polycondensation, incorporating 3-, 5-, and 7-wt% SiO 2 nanoparticles. Nanocomposite films were fabricated through a controlled casting method, followed by etching SiO 2 particles with hydrofluoric acid to create porous PMIA films. Enhancement of the PMIA/SiO 2 nanocomposites exhibited improved inherent viscosity, indicating high molecular weight and efficient polymerization. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the successful integration of SiO 2 into the PMIA matrix. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed uniform pore distribution in the porous films, with pore size increasing with higher SiO 2 content. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated enhanced thermal stability of PMIA/SiO 2 composites, with degradation temperatures increasing from 440 °C for pure PMIA to 460 °C for composites containing 7-wt% SiO 2 . Mechanical testing indicated that PMIA/SiO 2 composites with 5-wt% SiO 2 achieved optimal tensile strength (31.8 MPa) and elongation at break (30.1%), while higher SiO 2 content resulted in reduced mechanical performance due to particle agglomeration. The dielectric constants of these porous films remained consistently lower than those of their nonporous counterparts throughout the frequency range of 1 Hz to 1 MHz. This work highlights the potential of PMIA/SiO 2 nanocomposites and porous PMIA films for advanced applications requiring thermal and mechanical resilience, with tunable properties achieved through SiO 2 content variation.

Aromatic poly(m-phenyleneisophthalamide) (PMIA) and the metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-53(Al) were employed as the polymer matrix and additive, respectively, to develop mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) via non-solvent induced phase separation for potential application in organic solvent nanofiltration. The prepared membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and water contact angle measurements. The membrane water permeance enhanced when MIL-53(Al) was incorporated into the membrane structure while the rejection had no significant change. The optimum MMM (with 0.5 wt% MOF concentration) passes mono and bivalent inorganic salts but rejects larger charged organic molecules and has a mean effective pore size of 0.7 nm. The influence of organic solvents on MMM performance was also investigated and the result shows that the performance shifts towards a lower pure water permeance and a higher rejection after exposure to organic solvents (ethyl acetate or methanol). The membrane performance in organic solvent nanofiltration was evaluated on the basis of the permeance and rejection of brilliant blue G in ethanol, and the result showed that the permeance of MMMs significantly increased (by 289%) while the rejection slightly reduced by 4% in contrast to the pure membrane.

Meta aromatic polyamide (PMIA) has high rigidity and low flexibility due to the rigid molecular structure and highly oriented hydrogen bonding interactions, which will make the stress concentration and damage of PMIA by force. It is necessary to improve flexibility while maintaining mechanical strength. The influence of different aromatic ether structure on properties of PMIA and the evolution mechanism of molecular chain conformation in flexible PMIA fibers during the drawing process are not clear. This work obtained two flexible PMIA fibers (PMAB-PMIA and ODA-PMIA) by introducing 1,3-bis (4-aminophenoxy) benzene (PMAB) and 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA) into molecular chain. The properties of PMIA with different aromatic ether structures and microscale analysis during drawing were explored. The flexible PMIA maintained excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability, and flame retardancy. The tensile strength of pristine PMIA, PMAB-PMIA and ODA-PMIA was 2.68, 2.55 and 2.64 cN/dtex, respectively, meaning that flexible PMIA fibers kept high tensile strength. Compared with pristine PMIA, the elongation at break of PMAB-PMIA and ODA-PMIA increased by 30.1 % and 16.4 %. Their maximum number of twists also increased from 177 to 237 and 258 twists/10 cm. The increased elongation at break and torsional resistance proved that flexibility of modified PMIA elevated. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulations indicated that the molecular chains of aromatic-ether PMIA had more folded conformations, thus offering superior flexibility and stress dissipation capabilities at microstructural level. This work systematically explored high-strength and flexible PMIA fibers based on aromatic ether, which is expected to guide the material design of future functional fibers.

Particulate matter (PM) has a significant impact on air quality, especially the PM produced by automobile exhaust and high temperature environment. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a technology that can effectively intercept fine PM under high temperature conditions. This study reports the construction of poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) nanofiber-reinforced polyimide aerogel (PPNFAs) filters using freeze-drying and electrospinning for high temperature filtration. After 100 compression cycles, the maximum compressive stress of PPNFAs is reduced by only 15%. When the content of PMIA is 0.65 wt%, PPNFAs has a high porosity (97.35%), high specific surface area (8.87 m 2 g −1 ) and highest dust holding capacity (124.8 m 2 g −1 ). After 15 days of continuous heating test at 300°C, the filtration efficiency of PPNFAs filter for different diameter particles of impurities remained above 98%. Therefore, the PPNFAs filter prepared in this study provides a new design concept for a new generation of high temperature filters.

The development of efficient nanofiltration (NF) membranes is a critical challenge in the treatment of dye wastewater, particularly in achieving a balance between water permeability and selectivity. This work developed a nanomaterial-assisted mussel-inspired poly (m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) loose NF membrane with high permeability and excellent dye/salt selectivity. During fabrication, polyethyleneimine (PEI) was incorporated into the dopamine solution to promote uniform polymerization of dopamine, enhancing the homogeneity of the coating layer. Meanwhile, various titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles were incorporated into the mussel-inspired solution to enhance membrane performance. The addition of TiO 2 increases the available free volume in the membrane's thin selective layer, thus enhancing the permeation of water molecules. The modified membrane demonstrated remarkable flux (153.77 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ), a Congo red (CR) rejection exceeding 98%, and a favorable CR/Na 2 SO 4 selectivity of 29.6. Notably, other nanoparticles, such as graphene oxide (GO), halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), silica (SiO 2 ), zeolitic imidazolate framework-L (ZIF-L), and polydopamine (PDA) modified silver (Ag), can also regulate the PDA-PEI coating structure, thereby synergistically enhancing the membrane's permeability. Moreover, the modified composite NF membrane can maintain excellent dye/salt separation performance under various operating conditions, indicating its great potential in dye desalination applications.

Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) technology, which can achieve efficient separation of small molecules without phase change and greatly reduce energy consumption, is of great significance in contributing to the goal of ‘carbon neutrality’. The separation performance of OSN membranes directly affects the efficiency of the OSN process. Thin film composite (TFC) membranes prepared by interfacial polymerization (IP) have high ion selectivity and permeability. In this study, TFC membranes were prepared using poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) as the substrate with excellent thermal and chemical stability, and piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) as the reactive monomers. The effects of different IP conditions on the properties of TFC membranes were systematically studied. The experimental results showed that the optimized TFC membranes exhibited good water flux (57.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) and Na 2 SO 4 rejection (99.6 %) with a selectivity of up to 200 for monovalent and divalent salts (NaCl/ Na 2 SO 4 ) at 0.5 MPa. Notably, the membrane demonstrated stable ethanol permeance over a 60-hour continuous test. At the same time, the PMIA-PA TFC NF membrane can remain stable in alcohols, alkanes, ketones, benzenes, as well as acid and alkali solvents after one week, with strong solvent resistance

A high-temperature poly (m-phenyleneisophthalamide) (PMIA) dielectric composite was successfully manufactured with functionalized BN (fBN) fillers. Due to effective modification by KH-550, fBN particles evenly dispersed in PMIA matrix. The dielectric property, breakdown strength and thermal conductivity of PMIA/fBN dielectric composite were researched. The consequences indicate that fBN fillers can not only decrease the dielectric loss but also enhance the breakdown strength of PMIA/fBN dielectric composites. Furthermore, owing to the generated heat transfer pathways by fBN particles, the thermal conductivities improved from 0.23 W·m-1·K-1 of fBN-0 to 0.86 W·m-1·K-1 of fBN-30, demonstrating a significant improvement. These results present a novel method for fabricating high-temperature PMIA/fBN dielectric composites with improved breakdown strength and thermal conductivity.

Tight ultrafiltration (TUF) membranes have garnered significant attention for the treatment of printing and dyeing wastewater, owing to their high separation efficiency and water permeance. However, macrovoids in TUF membranes fabricated via conventional non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) inherently undergo collapse-induced structural degradation under pressurization, markedly reducing water permeability. In this study, we develop a cuttlebone-inspired poly (m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) TUF membrane featuring a symmetric porous structure to effectively enhance stability of ultrafiltration (UF) process. The resulting membrane fabricated through a double-sided NIPS process using a continuous microfluidic approach (M-PMIA) demonstrates superior structural robustness compared to conventionally cast PMIA membranes. The M-PMIA membrane achieves superior flux stability for 172 h continuous UF with an exceeding rejection rate for Congo Red and demonstrates a high pure water permeance of 180 L m−2 h−1 bar−1. Furthermore, the membrane exhibits excellent thermal and chemical stability throughout dye removal processes. This work proposes a promising approach for designing high-performance TUF membranes that facilitate efficient and stable purification of printing and dyeing wastewater.

Poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA)-based insulating paper exhibits excellent electrical insulation and mechanica l properties, including higher breakdown strength ( E b ) than conventional cellulose insulating paper. However, its intrinsically low thermal conductivity limits heat dissipation in oil-paper insulation systems, causing Joule heat accumulation, insulation degradation, and thermal breakdown. Herein, we report PMIA-based composite papers prepared by binary multidimensional doping the small-size 0D sphere-like aluminum nitride (AlN) filler with large-size 3D sphere-like, 2D lamellar-like, and 1D wire-like AlN fillers, respectively. At the same total filler volume fraction, large-size fillers with different morphologies show distinct advantages. For electrical insulation, the 2D lamellar-like filler most effectively enhances E b by optimizing trap characteristics and mitigating electric field distortion, reaching 284.3 kV/mm, 29.5% higher than that of the 0D-only doped sample (N15). For thermal conduction, 3D sphere-like filler is most effective in enhancing the out-of-plane thermal conductivity ( k ⊥ ) by reducing thermal resistance, reaching 0.282 W/(m·K) and representing a 14.5% improvement over N15. In contrast, 1D wire-like and 2D lamellar-like fillers are more favorable for constructing in-plane heat transfer pathways, yielding in-plane thermal conductivity ( k // ) values of 0.546 W/(m·K) and 0.386 W/(m·K), respectively. Moreover, finite element analysis further reveals the morphology-dependent electric and thermal field distributions in the composites.

Poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) is a high-performance polymer recognized for its outstanding thermal stability, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance, making it well-suited for advanced material applications. In this work, PMIA/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites were synthesized using an in situ interfacial polycondensation technique, with GO incorporated at varying loadings (1, 3, 5, and 7 wt %). GO was prepared via the modified Hummers method to ensure improved dispersibility and surface reactivity. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed successful chemical interactions between GO and the PMIA matrix, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a morphological transition from smooth to increasingly porous surfaces with higher GO contents. Thermal analysis showed enhanced thermal resistance, with the decomposition onset temperature increasing from 400 °C for neat PMIA to 457 °C at 5 wt % GO. Mechanical testing demonstrated that the 5 wt % GO composite exhibited the best tensile strength (32.5 MPa) and elongation at break (33.5%). Dielectric measurements indicated that all GO-filled composites had lower dielectric constants than pure PMIA, with the minimum value of 2.3 observed at 3 wt % GO due to optimized interfacial polarization at lower loadings. However, the 5 wt % GO composite provided the most comprehensive performance overall, as higher loading more effectively enhanced both thermal stability and mechanical reinforcement. These findings highlight the potential of PMIA/GO nanocomposites as promising candidates for advanced applications requiring superior thermal and mechanical performance along with low dielectric properties, including electronic insulation and membrane systems.

Particulate matter (PM) pollution is widely recognized as a major threat to public health, making the development of thermally stable filters for particulate removal in high-temperature environments critically important. However, the common polymer-based nanofiber air filters are inadequate stability when exposed to high temperature. In this study, the poly (m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) and nano barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) which showed remarkable thermal endurance was utilized to prepare the PMIA/BaTiO 3 composite nanofiber air filter. The structure and performance of nanofibers were regulated by changing the addition of BaTiO 3 . The PMIA/BaTiO 3 nanofiber air filter with nano-protrusion structure exhibits high PM2.5 filtration efficiency (98.7%) and low pressure drop (60.4 Pa). Even after being exposed to treatment at 250°C, the PMIA/BaTiO 3 composite nanofiber air filter can still maintain stable filtration performance. The results showed that PMIA/BaTiO 3 nanofiber materials hold promise for eliminating particulate matter in high-temperature environments.

Lithium−sulfur (Li−S) batteries are of great interest in next-generation flexible electronic devices for their much higher energy density. However, current Li−S batteries are still facing the problem about rational construction of the flexible power sources. Herein, a novel flexible and integrated electrode is fabricated through a non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method with poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) as the flexible support for Li-S batteries. Notably, the integrated electrode shows the capability of adapting the volume expansion of cathode materials, inhibiting the diffusion of lithium polysulfides and suppressing the dendrite growth of Li. As a result, battery assembled with the fabricated electrode exhibits a capacity of 773.6 mAh g −1 at 1 C. After 600 cycles, the capacity still remains at 565.5 mAh g −1 with the calculated capacity fade of 0.045% per cycle. This proposed strategy is advanced and feasible, which has great potential in next-generation portable electronic devices.
