Electrochemical decomposition of PPCPs on hydrophobic Ti/SnO2-Sb/La-PbO2 anodes: Relationship between surface hydrophobicity and decomposition performance

Xubin Qian,Kefu Peng,Lei Xu,Shaoyu Tang,Weilai Wang,Min Zhang,Junfeng Niu

The global detection and potential harm of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) call for the effective decomposition technology. In this study, the modified β-PbO 2 anodes with different hydrophobicity (Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/La-PbO 2 , Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/La-PbO 2 -PTFE and Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/La-PbO 2 -PVDF) were prepared to decompose aqueous PPCPs, i.e. isoniazid, methotrexate, carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole and ibuprofen. PTFE and PVDF modification improved the physical property, electrochemical property, stability and safety of β-PbO 2 electrode. Moreover, Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/La-PbO 2 -PVDF had the highest oxygen evolution potential (1.95 V vs. SCE), the largest electroactive area (88.85 cm 2 ), the highest HO • production rate (10.44 mM min −1 m −2 ) and the best degradation performance for all the five PPCPs. The hydrophobic surface increased the proportion of free HO • , resulting in higher radical utilization rate and better degradation performance. The excessive hydrophobicity could decrease the degradation performance of PPCPs with high log K ow due to the relatively large hydrophobic force zone. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity enhanced the mineralization (current) efficiency of isoniazid, and its electrochemical degradation mechanism on Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/La-PbO 2 -PVDF was thoroughly proposed. These results demonstrated that Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/La-PbO 2 -PVDF anode exhibited a good application prospect in treating wastewater containing PPCPs.

Occurrences of typical PPCPs during wastewater treatment and the composting of sewage sludge with micron-sized and nano-sized Fe3O4

Jishao Jiang,Rui Hou,Huilin Cui,Dong Liu,Guangxuan Yan,Yujuan Fan,Ke Cheng,Zhiguo Cao

New pollutants, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), accumulate in sewage sludge (SS) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), posing risks to the environment and to human health. In the present study, the fates of typical PPCPs, carbamazepine (CBZ), triclosan (TCS), ibuprofen (IBU) and galaxolide (HHCB), were examined during WW treatment. Additionally, SS collected from a WWTP was used for aerobic composting to investigate the influences of micron-sized Fe 3 O 4 (M-Fe) and nano-sized Fe 3 O 4 (N–Fe) on the degradation of these PPCPs and the succession of microbial communities during the composting process. The results showed that the mean concentrations of CBZ, TCS, IBU and HHCB in the influent of the WWTP were 926.5, 174.4, 8869, and 967.3 ng/g, respectively, and in the effluent were 107.6, 47.0, 283.4, and 88.4 ng/g, respectively. The removal rate averaged ∼80%, while the enrichment rates of the PPCPs in SS ranged from 37.2% to 60.5%. M-Fe and N–Fe reduced NH 3 emissions by 32.9% and 54.1% and N 2 O emissions by 26.2% and 50.8%, respectively. Moreover, the addition of M-Fe and N–Fe effectively increased PPCP degradation rates 1.12–1.66-fold. During the whole process, the additions of M-Fe and N–Fe significantly shifted microbial community structure, and the abundances of Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Actinobacteria were increased during the thermophilic stage, marking them as key PPCP-degrading phyla. Taken together, our results indicated that the addition of M-Fe and N–Fe is an effective method for improving the quality of end compost and accelerating the degradation of PPCPs.

Efficient enrichment and sensitive determination of endocrine disruptors in PPCPs by novel magnetic covalent organic framework extraction coupled with HPLC-MS/MS

Zheng Hu,Yuhang Yang,Zhe Li,Qiuying Tao,Yinghong Huang,Xian Wang

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a growing class of pollutants commonly found in environmental matrices due to their extensive use in pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). In this study, a novel magnetic covalent organic framework (COF), Fe 3 O 4 –COOH@TFP-BHBD, was successfully synthesized and utilized as an adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of EDCs from PPCPs. The core-shell structured adsorbent demonstrated a high specific surface area, strong magnetic responsiveness and excellent stability. A COF-MSPE-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (COF-MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS) method was developed for the quantitative analysis of EDCs in PPCPs. Under the optimized condition, the detection and quantification limits of this method reached as low as 0.001–0.007 ng/mL and 0.004–0.025 ng/mL, respectively. This method was validated and proven capable to analyze real PPCP samples, while the spiked recovery rates in ranged from 85.62 to 107.83 % with RSD of 2.28–8.58 %. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The DFT results revealed that the efficient enrichment capacity of Fe 3 O 4 –COOH@TFP-BHBD for EDCs can be attributed to π-π interactions and hydrogen bondings. This proposed method provides excellent adsorption ability and sensitivity for the extraction and precise detection of EDCs in PPCPs.

Efficient adsorption and full spectrum photocatalytic degradation of low concentration PPCPs promoted by graphene/TiO2 nanowires hybrid structure in 3D hydrogel networks

Yajie Hu,Yanan Yang,Jiejing Zhang,Shengnan Jin,Hong Zheng

The removal of low concentration PPCPs from water is a challenging issue. A graphene hydrogel with 3D networks shows great potential for accelerating eddy diffusion of low concentration PPCPs. Herein, to further promote its molecular diffusion, a graphene/TiO2 nanowires (GNW) hybrid structure was implanted into graphene hydrogel. The as-prepared rGO/GNW hydrogel exhibited significantly enhanced adsorption–photocatalytic performance and excellent stability for low concentration ethenzamide, a typical pharmaceutical pollutant in water, under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), ultraviolet (UV), visible and near-infrared light irradiation. When the initial ethenzamide concentration was 500 ppb and catalyst dosage was 10 mg/150 mL, ethenzamide was completely removed in 3 min and the corresponding photocatalytic apparent rate constant was 2.20 times that by GNW, 4.09 times that by rGO/P25 and 4.31 times that by rGO/NW under VUV irradiation, respectively, and its removal rate attained 99.0% in 120 min and the corresponding photocatalytic apparent rate constant was 2.06 times that by GNW, 3.34 times that by rGO/P25 and 17.42 times that by rGO/NW under UV irradiation, respectively. The GNW hybrid structure in the hydrogel played a vital role in overcoming the mass transfer resistance of low concentration PPCPs. The as-prepared rGO/GNW hydrogel exhibits significant potential for the removal of low concentration PPCPs from water.

Effect of anions on sonochemical degradation of PPCPs and their DBPs formation potential

Yu-qiong Gao,Ke-xuan Li,Qian Zeng,Fu-xiang Tian,Ze-ning Fan,Gang-yi Xing,Nai-yun Gao

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and their disinfection by-product (DBPs) formation during the disinfection process have raised widespread concerns. In this study, the effects of common anions on the sonochemical degradation of two model PPCPs, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and naproxen (NPX), and their DBPs formation potentials were comparatively explored. The degradation processes followed the heterogeneous kinetic models, indicating PPCPs degradation mainly occurred at the bubble/water interface via radical oxidation. Acidic conditions enhanced sonochemical degradation. Cl − and HCO 3 − have minimal effect, with HCO 3 − moderately enhancing SMX degradation, while Br − notably increased degradation of both PPCPs. Ultrasonic pretreatment reduced trichloromethane (TCM) formation but raised nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) level due to the formed intermediates. Cl − has little effect on DBPs formation, while HCO 3 − obviously diminished N-DBPs formation from both PPCPs. The increase of Br − concentration increased the formation of brominated DBPs (Br-DBPs), while the formation of chlorinated DBPs were inhibited both in direct chlorination and ultrasonic pretreatment followed by postchlorination. Ultrasonic pretreatment also elevated Br incorporation and utilization factors of trihalomethanes (THMs). Of note, although ultrasonic treatment can effectively degrade PPCPs in real environmental matrices, the increase in trichloronitromethane (TCNM) formation potential should be carefully monitored.

Elimination of PPCPs using ozonation-assisted electrochemical filtration with a Ti3C2Tx/CNTs membrane electrode: Performance, mechanisms, and application potential

Donghai Wu,Chenchen Yi,Guanghua Lu,Chao Zhou,Jun Hou

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) pose potential risks to aquatic ecosystems and human health. This work developed an ozonation-assisted electrochemical filtration (OAEF) system using a Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNTs composite membrane electrode and systematically investigated its efficiency, mechanisms, and practicality for PPCPs removal. The results suggest that the excellent adsorption and hydrophilic properties of Ti 3 C 2 T x , combined with its formation of an optimized membrane structure when mixed with CNTs, significantly enhanced the pollutant adsorption capacity and water permeation flux of fabricated electrode. Ozone incorporation in the electrochemical filtration process facilitated pollutant abatement, achieving approximately 99 % degradation and 42 % mineralization of fluoxetine (FLX), a representative PPCP. Moreover, the OAEF system demonstrated broad pH suitability and good stability, effectively detoxifying FLX-contaminated wastewater. The analysis of oxidants and electrode component evolution in the OAEF system, combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealed that enhanced mass transfer and electron transport promoted electro-peroxone initiation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, thereby improving pollutant elimination and regenerating the adsorption capacity of electrode. Further analysis of 34 PPCPs treatment using quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models indicated that adsorption on the Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNTs was primarily influenced by pollutant solubility, C O bond content, dipole moment, and molecular weight, while degradation was significantly impacted by aromatic ring content, highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy, lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy, and solubility. Additionally, the Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNTs membrane electrode exhibited satisfied fouling mitigation during the treatment of real surface water, suggesting that the OAEF process is feasible for practical applications.

Improvement of the conventional flat plate electrode: Application of filtered Pd@Ti electrode in the removal of toxic chlorinated PPCPs

Junjing Li,Menghua Yin,Yu Wang,Liang Wang

In order to change the mass transfer efficiency of conventional flat plate electrodes in the catalytic process, a new filtered Pd@Ti electrode has been prepared. The results indicated that the filtered Pd@Ti electrode had the best removal efficiency of 99.59% on diclofenac (DCF) at the flux of 40.85 L/m 2 ∙h -1 . Compared to unfiltered Pd@Ti electrodes, the removal efficiency was 1.18 times higher, the current efficiency was 2.15 times higher and the cost of electricity was 69.05% lower. The electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination process of DCF by filtered Pd@Ti electrode mainly relies on indirect reductive dechlorination by H* adsorbed on the electrode surface. The removal efficiency of the filtered Pd@Ti electrode remained above 80% after six cycles. The removal mechanism and reaction pathway of filtered Pd@Ti electrode for dechlorination of different chlorinated PPCPs were proposed. Furthermore, the ecotoxicity of chlorinated PPCPs and their products were evaluated by using the toxicity estimation software tool (T.E.S.T.) model. This study confirmed the promising application of filtered Pd@Ti electrodes for the removal and detoxification of chlorinated PPCPs in wastewater.

A simple strategy for fabrication of Pd@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposite as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst for the treatment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs)

Ruowen Liang,Shuiguang Luo,Fenfen Jing,Lijuan Shen,Na Qin,Ling Wu

The effective treatment of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) contained wastewater remains a significant but challenging task for the environmental restoration. In this work, a novel Pd@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposite has been successfully fabricated via a facile alcohol reduction approach. The resulting Pd@MIL-100(Fe) has exhibited superior photoactivity toward degradation of three typical PPCPs, that is theophylline, ibuprofen and bisphenol A, under visible light irradiation ( λ   ≥   420   nm). Its photoactivity is also much higher than that of original-MIL-100(Fe). Combining with photoelectrochemical analyses, it could be revealed that the introduction of Pd NPs would minimize the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, thereby improving the photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the effects of different kinds of metals, the loading amount of noble-metal, the pH value of reaction solution and initial concentration of hydrogen peroxide on the photocatalytic degradation activities have been measured in detail. In addition, a possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism has been investigated. This work has not only represented the first example of using the MOFs photocatalysts to remove the aqueous PPCPs, but also offered useful information on the fabrication of efficient MOF photocatalysts for environmental restoration.

Chronic exposure to PPCPs mixture at environmentally relevant concentrations (ERCs) altered carbohydrate and lipid metabolism through gut and liver toxicity in zebrafish

Naima Hamid,Muhammad Junaid,Yan Wang,Shi-Ya Pu,Pan-Pan Jia,De-Sheng Pei

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have been widely distributed and posed ecotoxicological risks in the aquatic environment. This study aims to evaluate the toxic effects after chronic exposure to PPCPs mixture at the environment relevant concentrations (ERCs). Our results indicated that PPCPs induced serious metabolic effects by disturbing the carbohydrate and lipid metabolism pathways. Chronic exposure caused a significant reduction in the hepatosomatic index (HSI), the gut weight ratios, and histological alterations in liver and gut tissues. Further, exposure to the combined PPCPs disrupted the carbohydrate metabolism via significant upregulation of hk1, gk, pck1 , and insr genes. The lipid metabolism was affected with higher ppars expression levels that increased the fatty acid β-oxidation and ultimately decreased the lipidogenesis. Moreover, the altered responses of the insulin growth factor (IGF) pathway more in male gut tissue than that of female revealed sex-dependent disturbance in the gut homeostasis induced by PPCPs mixture. In conclusion, chronic exposure to PPCPs mixtures at ERCs can induce developmental effects and metabolic dysfunction in both male and female fish. The consumption and environmental disposal of these PPCPs should be regulated to ensure ecological health and environmental safety.

Development and assessment of an onsite large volume solid phase extraction (LV-SPE) device for the determination of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in water

Xue Cheng,Ning Fang,Yuxi Ge,Wenchao Li,Yamei Hui,Zilong Tang,Yu Wan,Yuancheng Li

It is essential to determine the occurrence of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs), such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), in the ambient environment to address growing public concerns. However, such analysis is quite challenging due to the low trace level of such contaminants in water, which therefore requires several litres of water samples. In this study, a large volume solid phase extraction (LV-SPE) device was developed and evaluated for its performance in monitoring PPCPs as an example. Relatively good recoveries and reproducibility were obtained under specific operating conditions: a water sample volume of no more than 20 L, a flow rate not exceeding 120 mL/min, and a methanol elution volume of at least 30 mL. In addition, the results from the onsite enrichment approach using LV-SPE were compared with those from the conventional approach using a standard SPE device in the laboratory for real groundwater samples. Among the eight selected PPCPs (nalidixic acid, carbamazepine, bezafibrate, clofibric acid, sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxypyridazine, sulfamethazine and sulfamonomethoxine), LV-SPE approach detected more target compounds. While the detected concentrations were generally comparable, slightly higher concentrations were observed for carbamazepine, clofibric acid, sulfadiazine and sulfamethazine using the LV-SPE method. The developed LV-SPE device provides an alternative approach for trace analysis of PPCPs and may also be applicable for other emerging organic contaminants.

A porous thienyl cyclodextrin polymer synthesized in a homogeneous ionic liquid catalytic system for the rapid removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs)

Yizhou Tu,Huimin Wang,Pingping Yang,Guizhou Xu,Xuejiao Hu,Aimin Li,Xianchuan Xie

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are widely distributed in aquatic environments due to their large consumption and low biodegradability, causing ecological risks. In this study, a porous thienyl cyclodextrin polymer (Th-CDP) with a specific surface area of 730 m2 g−1 was synthesized in an ionic liquid system for the first time to remove PPCPs. The green and recyclable 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride/ferric chloride ([EMIm]Cl/FeCl3) ionic liquid was synthesized as a solvent and catalyst, superior to traditional toxic organic solvents and heterogeneous catalysts. In Th-CDP synthesis, thienyl cyclodextrin (ThCD) was synthesized, followed by polymerization with the three-dimensional cross-linking agent trimethyl orthoformate (Tmof) in [EMIm]Cl/FeCl3via the Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction. Th-CDP shows excellent adsorption towards the studied PPCPs (diclofenac, ibuprofen, carbamazepine, and sulfamethoxazole) due to the rich pore structure. In particular, Th-CDP achieved 90% removal of hydrophobic diclofenac and ibuprofen in 5 min, and the rate constants were 16.7 and 10.5 times higher than those of activated carbon, respectively. The adsorption capacity of Th-CDP is related to the molecular weight and pKa of the compound, and is about twice that of activated carbon. Th-CDP has more pronounced adsorption advantages over activated carbon for acidic compounds due to its positive charge under neutral conditions. In addition, multiple mechanisms, including hydrophobic interaction caused by thiophene and cyclodextrin, electrostatic interaction, and heteroatom interaction (24.8% S content), enable Th-CDP to efficiently remove PPCPs. Moreover, Th-CDP has great application potential due to its excellent regenerability, anti-interference ability, and green synthesis process.
