Engineering interfacial hydrogen spillover for sulfur‑tolerant hydrogenation of nitroarenes with ppm‑level Pt

Tao Cheng,Zongpeng Lin,Xuefang Zhao,Zhanwu Lei,Jiabao Wei,Haitao Chen,Zhenchao Zhao,Qihua Yang

Intra-particle hydrogen (H) spillover is widely exploited in supported metal catalysts to boost hydrogenation performance, yet interfacial hydrogen spillover between particles remains less explored in liquid-phase hydrogenation. In this study, we demonstrate the activity enhancement achieved by rational regulation of intra/inter-particle H spillover of Pt/TiO 2 using 5-nitrobenzothiazole (NBZ) hydrogenation as a model reaction. By regulating intraparticle hydrogen spillover, we achieved a 17-fold increase in the reaction rate of Pt/TiO 2 with ppm-level Pt. Further leveraging interparticle hydrogen spillover between Pt/TiO 2 and Fe-TiO 2 enhanced the activity by an additional 2.3-fold, resulting in a conversion rate of 5232 h⁻ 1 . Detailed characterizations revealed that the balanced density of Ti 3+ and Pt exposure degree, and enhanced electron transfer properties significantly amplify interparticle H spillover capability. The generality of this strategy is confirmed by extending interparticle H spillover–promoted nitro group hydrogenation to CeO 2 , another prototypical reducible metal oxide. This work demonstrates that carefully tuning intra/inter-particle H spillover can unlock exceptional performance in the hydrogenation of strongly coordinating substrates having N or S atom that can be strongly adsorbed on the Pt surface.

AuPt Bimetal-Functionalized SnSe2 Microflower-Based Sensors for Detecting Sub-ppm NO2 at Low Temperatures

Wei Liu,Ding Gu,Xiaogan Li

A novel chemiresistive-type sensor for detecting sub-ppm NO2 has been fabricated using AuPt bimetal-decorated SnSe2 microflowers, which was synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment followed by in situ chemical reduction of the bimetal precursors on the surface of the petals of the microflowers. The as-prepared sensor registers a superior performance in detection of sub-ppm concentration of NO2. Functionalized by the AuPt bimetal, the SnSe2 microflower-based sensor shows a response of approximately 4.62 to 8 ppm NO2 at 130 °C. It is significantly higher than those of the sensors using the pristine SnSe2 (∼2.29) and the modified SnSe2 samples by a single metal, either Au (∼3.03) or Pt (∼3.97). The sensor demonstrates excellent long-term stability, signal repeatability, and selectivity to some typical interfering gaseous species including ammonia, acetone, formaldehyde, ethanol, methanol, benzene, CO2, SO2, and CO. The remarkable improvement of the sensitive characteristics could be induced by the electronic and chemical sensitization and the synergistic effect of the AuPt bimetal. Density functional theory (DFT) is implemented to calculate the adsorption states of NO2 on the sensing materials and thus to possibly reveal the sensing mechanism. The significantly enhanced response of the SnSe2-based sensor decorated with AuPt bimetallic nanoparticles has been found to be possibly caused by the orbital hybridization of O, Au, and Pt atoms leading to the redistribution of electrons, which is beneficial for NO2 molecules to obtain more electrons from the composite material.

Impact of ternary nanocomposite In2O3/SnO2/F-CDs composition on low ppm NO2 sensing performance

Yi Zhong,Chenhan Zhang,Zhihua Ying,Yuan Jiang,Weiqin Sheng

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a significant air pollutant with a notable environmental impact, necessitating precise monitoring. However, most existing NO 2 sensing materials exhibit low sensitivity and require high-temperature operation. In this study, we employed a hydrothermal and co-precipitation method to synthesize a novel ternary nanocomposite , In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 nanoparticles (NPs)/fluorine-doped carbon quantum dots (F-CDs). By varying the mass ratio of In 2 O 3 to SnO 2 NPs, we investigated the gas-sensing performance of the composite towards NO 2 . The results demonstrate that when the ratio of SnO 2 and In 2 O 3 reaches to 1 : 2, the 2-In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 /F-CDs gas sensor exhibited the highest response, excellent selectivity , and remarkable stability under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation at room temperature (∼25 °C). Furthermore, the response of the 2-In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 /F-CDs gas sensor displayed a strong linear relationship with the concentration of NO 2 gas. At a NO 2 gas concentration of 3 ppm, the sensitivity was 238, which is significantly higher than that of In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 NPs and In 2 O 3 sensors. The response time and recovery time were measured at 62 s and 33 s, respectively. Finally, based on experimental characterization results and band structure analysis, we confirmed the promising effects of ternary nanocomposite in enhancing gas sensing.

Coverage engineering by shell-number-controlled nanoconfinement enables nitric oxide electroreduction in the ppm regime

Jin Shanyuhan,Xu Daliang,Xu Peiwen,Yin Kangwei,Du Jiaxin,Chen Han,Fan Jinling,Liang Heng,Wu Zhongbiao,Wu Xuanhao

Electrochemical nitric oxide reduction (NORR) under industrially relevant dilute feeds is fundamentally limited by insufficient interfacial NO coverage and rapid loss of reactive intermediates. Here we introduce quantifiable nanoconfinement as a coverage-regulation strategy for NORR in the ppm regime. Hollow multishelled Cu 2 O nanoreactors are constructed as a model system, in which shell number defines confinement depth and progressively strengthens confinement by narrowing inter-shell cavities. Under a 1000 ppm NO feed, the three-shell catalyst achieves a Faradaic efficiency of 97.9% and a single-pass NO conversion of 97.3%, which is competitive with systems operating under NO-rich conditions. Finite-element simulations quantitatively show that multishell confinement nonlinearly amplifies intermediate enrichment, increasing local *H and *NH concentrations by over an order of magnitude relative to the single-shell structure while also enhancing local NO coverage. Coverage-dependent density functional theory and transition-state calculations reveal that the confinement-modulated coverage environment reshapes the NORR kinetic and thermodynamic landscape by rebalancing initial *NO hydrogenation and NH 3 desorption, defining a favorable coverage window that balances intermediate activation and product release. These findings establish nanoconfinement-enabled coverage engineering for electrocatalysis under dilute feeds.

PSS-PANI/PVDF composite based flexible NH3 sensors with sub-ppm detection at room temperature

Dawu Lv,Wenfeng Shen,Weigang Chen,Ruiqin Tan,Lei Xu,Weijie Song

Improved ammonia (NH 3 ) sensor is proposed based on polyaniline (PANI) with poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSS) as an additive, which was produced by in-suit polymerization of aniline on flexible porous polyvinylidene-fluoride (PVDF) membranes and then treated with PSS aqueous solution. The whole film sensor fabrication process was low-cost and convenient in operation, suitable for large-scale commercial production. The results demonstrated that the appropriate addition of PSS could significantly improve the sensor response to NH 3 . The PSS-PANI/PVDF film sensor response was improved to approximately 70%, which was 2.8 times higher than that of the pure PANI/PVDF film with 25% response towards 1 ppm NH 3 at room temperature. Furthermore, it still showed an excellent response of 9.4% for 0.1 ppm NH 3 . The fabricated film sensor showed remarkable long-term stability with response decreases less than 5% after 30 days, and excellent flexibility under 10,000 repeated bending times with a response value degradation of only 15.1% towards 1 ppm NH 3 . The flexible PSS-PANI/PVDF film offers potential applications in smart wearable devices for detecting sub-ppm NH 3 under ambient conditions.

Polyaniline/Tungsten Disulfide Composite for Room-Temperature NH3 Detection with Rapid Response and Low-PPM Sensitivity

Kuo Zhao,Yunbo Shi,Haodong Niu,Qinglong Chen,Jinzhou Liu,Bolun Tang,Canda Zheng

Polyaniline (PANI) is an important conductive-polymer gas-sensing material with working temperature and mechanical flexibilities superior to those of conventional metal oxide sensing materials. However, its applicability is limited by its low sensitivity, high detection limits, and long response/recovery times. In this study, we prepared PANI/WS2composites via chemical oxidative polymerization and mechanical blending. A multilayer sensor structure—sequentially printed silver-paste heating electrodes, fluorene polyester insulating layer, silver interdigitated electrodes, and sensing material layer—was fabricated on a polyimide substrate via flexible microelectronic printing and systematically characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The optimized 5 wt% WS2composite showed enhanced gas-sensing performance, with 219.1% sensitivity to 100 ppm ammonia (2.4-fold higher than that of pure PANI) and reduced response and recovery times of 24 and 91 s, respectively (compared to 81 and 436 s for pure PANI, respectively). Notably, the PANI/WS2sensor detected an ultralow ammonia concentration (100 ppb) with 0.104% sensitivity. The structural characterization and performance analysis results were used to deduce a mechanism for the enhanced sensing capability. These findings highlight the application potential of PANI/WS2composites in flexible gas sensors and provide fundamental insights for PANI-based sensing materials research.

Room Temperature Sub-ppm NO2 Gas Sensor Based on Ag/SnS2 Heterojunction Driven by Visible Light

Ding Gu,Jun Dong,Wei Liu,Xiaogan Li

As industrial waste gas, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a serious hazard to air pollution and human health, and there is a pressing demand for developing high-performance NO2gas sensors. Tin disulfide (SnS2), a representative two-dimensional metal sulfide characterized by a significant specific surface area, a suitable electron band gap, and an easily tunable layered structure, shows a broad application prospect in gas sensing applications. Nevertheless, SnS2-based gas sensors suffer from poor sensitivity, which seriously hinders their application in room temperature gas sensing. In this study, Ag/SnS2heterojunction nanomaterials were synthesized by an in situ reduction approach. The findings reveals that the gas-sensitive response of the Ag/SnS2nanocomposites at room temperature under visible light irradiation can achieve 10.5 to 1 ppm NO2, with a detection limit as low as 200 ppb, which realizes the room-temperature detection of Sub-ppm NO2. Meanwhile, the sensor exhibits good selectivity, reproducibility (cyclic stability > 95%). The improved gas sensitivity of the Ag/SnS2sensor can be due to the synergistic effect of the carrier separation at the Ag/SnS2Schottky junction and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag nanoparticles. The LSPR effect significantly enhances light absorption and surface-active site density, facilitating trace NO2detection at room temperature. This study provides the foundation for the subsequent development of room temperature layered metal sulfide gas sensors.

Formic Acid of ppm Enhances LC-MS/MS Detection of UV Irradiation-Induced DNA Dimeric Photoproducts

Ning Zhang,Wenchao Deng,Yao Li,Yangde Ma,Yan Liu,Xiangjun Li,Hailin Wang

Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) and pyrimidine (6–4) pyrimidone photoproducts (6–4PPs) are genotoxic DNA lesions and mainly generated on thymine–thymine (T–T) dinucleotides upon UV irradiation. Regarding the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of analytical methods, it is of first choice to develop a reliable assay for simultaneous detection of these DNA lesions using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). However, the dilemma is the low detection sensitivity of the phosphate-containing dimeric photoproducts even using most favorable negative-ion mode for LC-MS/MS analysis. Unexpectedly, we observed that the detection sensitivity of T–T CPD and 6–4PP could be significantly improved using formic acid/acetic acid (∼ppm) as an additive of the mobile phase for reversed-phase LC-MS/MS analysis. This is the first demonstration of the enhancement of LC-MS/MS signals by formic acid/acetic acid in negative-ion mode. Of note, these acidic agents are often used for positive-ion mode in LC-MS assays. Benefited from the developed method, we could quantify both T–T CPD and 6–4PP in mouse embryonic stem cells upon UVC irradiation at low dosage. This sensitive method is applicable to the screening and identification of genes involved in formation, signaling, and repair of UV lesion.

In-situ sampling of lipids in tissues using a porous membrane microprobe for direct mass spectrometry analysis

Bin Jiao,Wei Zhou,Yikun Liu,Wenpeng Zhang,Zheng Ouyang

Direct sampling of lipids from tissues for direct mass spectrometry (MS) analysis allows a quick profiling of lipidome, which is important for biomedical applications. In this work, we developed a polyporous polymeric membrane (PPM) microprobe for highly efficient sampling of lipids directly from tissue samples. The PPM was prepared by polypropylene with pores as large of 10 μm, facilitating the permeation of lipids from tissue surfaces. The PPM was coated onto a stainless steel wire with a thickness of ∼100 μm. The entire analysis procedure includes sampling of the lipids in tissue, washing the probe, and extraction spray ionization for MS analysis. The effectiveness was validated by analyzing mouse brain tissue samples. It showed high recoveries for a series of lipid classes in comparison with total lipid extraction method. Further demonstration was carried out with analysis of tissue samples from mouse liver, stomach, kidney and legs. With high physical strength and good chemical stability, the microprobe was also demonstrated for sampling lipids inside mouse kidney tissue samples. By incorporating a photochemical derivatization, a workflow was also developed for fast detection of lipid C C isomers in tissue samples. Finally, a microprobe array was also developed for simultaneous sampling of lipids from multiple sites on tissue surfaces.

Upregulation of Hsp27 via further inhibition of histone H2A ubiquitination confers protection against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury by promoting glycolysis and enhancing mitochondrial function

Shi Pilong,Wu Jiawei,Li Minghui,Cao Yonggang,Wu Jiabi,Ren Ping,Liu Kai,Zhou Jiajun,Sha Yuetong,Zhang Qianhui,Sun Hongli

Research suggests that ischemic glycolysis improves myocardial tolerance to anoxia and low-flow ischemia. The rate of glycolysis during ischemia reflects the severity of the injury caused by ischemia and subsequent functional recovery following reperfusion. Histone H2AK119 ubiquitination ( H2Aub ) is a common modification that is primarily associated with gene silencing. Recent studies have demonstrated that H2Aub contributes to the development of cardiovascular diseases. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study identified Hsp27 (heat shock protein 27) as a H2Aub binding protein and explored its involvement in mediating glycolysis and mitochondrial function. Functional studies revealed that inhibition of PRC1 (polycomb repressive complex 1) decreased H2Aub occupancy and promoted Hsp27 expression through inhibiting ubiquitination. Additionally, it increased glycolysis by activating the NF-κB / PFKFB3 signaling pathway during myocardial ischemia. Furthermore, Hsp27 reduced mitochondrial ROS production by chaperoning COQ9 , and suppressed ferroptosis during reperfusion. A delivery system was developed based on PCL-PEG-MAL (PPM)-PCM-SH (CWLSEAGPVVTVRALRGTGSW) to deliver PRT4165 (PRT), a potent inhibitor of PRC1 , to damaged myocardium, resulting in decreased H2Aub . These findings revealed a novel epigenetic mechanism connecting glycolysis and ferroptosis in protecting the myocardium against ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Strong metal-support interaction engineering in Ru/TiO2 mesostructures: Achieving ultra-deep CO removal below 1 ppm

Xiaolong Tan,Xiangguo Zhang,Yushi He,Zeyi Jiang,Cheng Bao,Nien-Chu Lai

Carbon monoxide selective methanation (CO-SMET) holds promise for removing low-concentration CO in the hydrocarbon reforming for hydrogen (H 2 ) production process and is a deep CO removal technology suitable for low-temperature fuel cells. However, developing highly efficient CO-SMET catalysts remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report a supported catalyst (Ru 1.0 (Cl)/TiO 2 ) with highly dispersed ruthenium (Ru) metal on a high-specific-surface-area mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) catalyst. This catalyst exhibits excellent performance in CO-SMET. It can reduce the CO concentration to below 10 ppm in a wide temperature range of 190–300 °C, and the outlet CO concentration can reach an ultra-low level of 0.2 ppm in the optimal temperature zone (210–220 °C). Through XPS and in situ DRIFTS characterizations, the crucial role of Ru–Cl species at the metal-support interface is revealed. The presence of chlorine atoms leads to electron enrichment in the Ru metal, enhancing its adsorption and activation of CO.

Ultra-Sensitivity of Active Surface Growth: How Sub-ppm Thiol-Ligands Drive Intra-Particle Competition in Gold Nanohexagrams

An Su,Qian Wang,Liping Huang,Guangyu He,Hongyu Chen

We reveal an imbalanced growth regime in the synthesis of colloidal chiral gold nanostructures. Beyond the prevailing view that chiral ligands simply imprint chirality onto nanostructures formed in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) environment, we show that CTAB provides the background conditions for active surface growth, where cysteine (Cys) at sub-ppm concentrations act as strong-binding ligands that induce difference among the active sites: from homogeneous chiral nanohexagrams, to nanotriskelia with three elongated arms, and nanocomets with a single tail. Extending this concept to diverse thiol-based ligands (thiols), we define the critical ligand concentration (CLC) as a quantitative metric for evaluating ligand affinity to Au surfaces, revealing the critical role of amine-thiol synergy. Moreover, the imbalanced growth regime depends critically on deposition kinetics: rapid Au deposition drives a positive-feedback process that amplifies small differences in site reactivity. Together, our findings identify the thiol/CTAB ratio, ligand affinity, and deposition rate as the key parameters that govern intraparticle competition and growth-mode transitions.
