A novel intumescent flame retardant imparts high flame retardancy to epoxy resin

Jie Wang,Yu Guo,ShunPing Zhao,Rong-Yi Huang,Xue-Jun Kong

Intumescent flame retardant (IFR) has received the considerable attention ascribed to the inherent advantages including non-halogen, low toxicity, low smoke release and environmentally friendly. In this work, a novel charring agent poly (piperazine phenylaminophosphamide) named as PPTA was successfully synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Then, a series of flame-retardant EP samples were prepared by blending with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and PPTA. Combustion tests include oxygen Index (LOI), vertical Burning Test (UL-94) and cone calorimeter testing, these test results showed that PPTA greatly enhances the flame retardancy of EP/APP. According to detailed results, EP containing 10 wt% APP had a LOI value of 30.2%,but had no enhancement on UL-94 rating. However, after both 7.5 wt% APP and 2.5 wt% PPTA were added, EP-7 passed UL-94 V-0 rating with a LOI value of 33.0%. Moreover, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and peak of smoke product rate (PSPR) of EP-7 were greatly decreased. Meanwhile, the flame-retardant mechanism of EP-7 was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry (TG-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The corresponding results presented PPTA significantly increased the density of char layer, resulting in the good flame retardancy.

Polyimide-Modified PPTA-Coated Separator for Lithium Metal Batteries

Gaojun Liu,Zilin Zhang,Tingguo Yan,Pingchuan Ma,Yaozong Bai,Yajun Zhang,Guang Cheng

The ANF (aramid nanofiber)-coated separator possesses enhanced thermal stability performance when compared to the polyolefin-based separator. The overly dense nanofiber structure reduces the pore size within the separators and increases the impedance. In this study, the polyimide (PI) was introduced to the ODA-PPTA colloidal solution, and a composed PPTA-PI structure was formed. The averaged pore size within the PPTA-PI coating layer (∼367 nm) was larger than that within the PPTA coating layer (∼260 nm) through the thickness. Similar pore sizes were observed on the coating layer, ensuring a uniform lithium ion flux. Meanwhile, the PPTA-PI-coated separator possesses higher tensile strength and puncture strength. The ionic conductivity increases from 0.74 mS/cm (bare PE separator) to 0.76 mS/cm (PPTA-coated separator) and further to 0.82 mS/cm (PPTA-PI coated separator). The Li + transference number of PPTA-PI-coated separator reaches 0.58, which is higher than 0.45 (PPTA-coated separator) or 0.31 from (bare PE separator). Also, the PPTA-PI-coated separator shows improved capacity retention and lithium dendrite suppression compared to the bare PE and PPTA-PE separator after cyclic tests. Compared to other aramid coating methods, the current approach would enable the mass production of PPTA-PI-coated separator at a lower cost.

Biomimetic Winding-Interlocked PPTA Nanocomposite Paper Reinforced by Polyarylate Nanofibers for Robust Electrical Insulation

Han Ye,Hua Ma,Xiaowang Zhang,Liping Chen,Xinyao Xu,Luoxin Wang,Hua Wang,Siwei Xiong

High-performance aramid insulating paper that simultaneously combines mechanical robustness, dielectric strength, and environmental durability is highly desirable, yet remains difficult to realize because weak interfiber adhesion and loose network structures in conventional poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) paper fundamentally limit stress transfer and electric-field regulation. Here, inspired by the interwoven architecture of natural rattan stems, a winding-interlocked PPTA/polyarylate (PAR) nanocomposite insulating paper is engineered by integrating thermally reprocessable PAR nanofibers with a heat-activated interfacial fusion strategy. The PAR nanofibers act as nanoscale binder-reinforcers that bridge adjacent PPTA fibers, while strong interfacial coupling, governed by hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking, promotes structural densification, suppresses space-charge accumulation, and homogenizes the local electric-field distribution. This biomimetic multiscale architecture enables the simultaneous optimization of mechanical load transfer and dielectric insulation. At a PAR loading of 30 wt%, the composite paper achieves a breakdown strength of 130.3 kV/mm and a tensile strength of 39.124 MPa, which are approximately 4.8 times and 1.9 times higher than those of commercial aramid paper, respectively. Notably, the paper retains excellent dielectric performance even after thermal aging, UV exposure, and repeated folding/deformation, demonstrating outstanding weather resistance and mechanical reliability. This work provides a scalable strategy for designing next-generation aramid-based insulation papers for electrical insulation applications under harsh conditions. Highlights Polyarylate nanofibers exhibit secondary thermoprocessing characteristics. Nanocomposite insulation paper design via entangled-interlocked fiber networks. Excellent dielectric properties and extreme-condition tolerance. Achieved 130.3 kV/mm breakdown strength in nanocomposite paper. Dual-network interlocking architecture suppresses charge accumulation and field distortion.

Yiyang Zhang,Xiaoming Hu,Fangrong Tian,Dinghe Yan,Yutong Cao,Chun Wang,Jingjing Yan,Dawei Ji,Haolong Xue,Changfa Xiao

Controllable design of ternary PNIPAM-PEGMA-PEI microgel with enhanced hydrophilicity and covalent anchoring • Direct embedding of microgels into polyamide Layer via interfacial polymerization • Long-Term anti-scaling performance with thermally triggered self-cleaning and permeance enhancement As a cutting-edge intelligent membrane material, temperature-responsive composite membranes can reversibly regulate the surface properties and pore size structure of the membrane according to changes in ambient temperature, demonstrating unique application potential in the field of high-temperature separation. In this study, we used fully rigid aromatic poly ( p -phenylene terephthamide) (PPTA) as the porous base membrane and designed a temperature-resistant macromolecule. By introducing hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) monomers into the PNIPAM-PEI system, we synthesized the PNIPAM-PEGMA-PEI ternary copolymer microgel, and directly embedded it into the surface separation layer of positively charged polyamide using interfacial polymerization to obtain high-temperature resistant PPTA/PA@[PNIPAM-PEGMA-PEI] nanofiltration membranes, achieving significant reduction in membrane surface contamination rates while maintaining temperature-sensitive regulation of membrane pore size. The membrane exhibited a 57.9% increase in pure water flux at 60 °C and achieved salt rejections above 97% for Na 2 SO 4 , CaCl 2 , and MgSO 4 (5 g/L) at 25 °C. During a 180 h test with periodic thermal transitions, permeance rose from 9.8 to 16.4 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·MPa −1 while retention remained above 89%. This heat-triggered cleaning and reversible pore-size regulation originate from the reversible chain collapse of PNIPAM above its LCST, providing a new strategy for designing highly permeable, regenerable, and anti-scaling nanofiltration membranes for high-temperature desalination and high-salinity wastewater treatment.

Preparation of PPTA/PA/PEMs Composite Nanofiltration Membranes With Multilayer Structure for Thermal Wastewater Treatment

Zhiyuan Qiao,Yang Ye,Jingwen Chu,Jialin Wei,Feng Xu,Dinghe Yan,Dawei Ji,Haolong Xue,Shiqiang Song,Chun Wang

In this study, a multilayer PPTA/PA/PEMs composite nanofiltration (NF) membrane was fabricated through sequential processes. First, a polyamide (PA) separation layer was constructed on a Poly (p-phenylene terephthamide) (PPTA) substrate via interfacial polymerization (IP). Subsequently, polyacrylamide hydrochloride (PAH) and polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSS) were alternately deposited on the PA layer using layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly, forming polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs). The PAH-terminated membrane (M4.5) demonstrated 97% retention for CaCl 2 and 98% for methylene blue (cationic dye) at 25°C, while the PSS-terminated membrane (M3) achieved 98% retention for Na 2 SO 4 and 97% for eosin Y (anionic dye) under identical conditions. Thermal stability tests across 25°C–65°C revealed retention rates exceeding 90% for M3and M4.5. Prolonged operation of M4.5 with CaCl 2 solution at 65°C for 80 h resulted in minimal efficiency loss, confirming robust thermal resistance. This performance is attributed to the synergistic combination of the thermally stable PPTA and the multilayer-engineered PA-PEMs structure, which effectively suppresses pore deformation under thermal stress. This study presents a novel preparation strategy for heat-resistant composite NF membranes, demonstrating exceptional application potential in the treatment of conventional textile dyeing and printing wastewater under high-temperature conditions.

Tunable crosslinking PPTA nanofiltration membranes with tailored pore architectures for high-efficiency dye/salt separation

Genyuan Zhang,He Wen,Jing Wang,Ziwen Dai,Yimeng Shi,Hao Tan,Jinghao Dang,Shoujin Wang,Wenbo Yu,Sha Liang,Jiakuan Yang,Shushan Yuan

The development of high-performance nanofiltration membranes for efficient dye/salt separation remains a critical challenge in sustainable wastewater treatment. Herein, we report a tunable strategy to fabricate poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA)-based membranes with tailored pore architectures and surface functionalities. By employing low-temperature polycondensation of terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) and p-phenylenediamine (PPD) in an N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) system, followed by selective end-capping, carboxyl- or amine-terminated membranes (PPTA tpc and PPTA ppd ) were synthesized. These membranes exhibited ultrafiltration-level permeance (643.1 and 697.3 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 ) but limited Congo Red (CR) rejection (∼90 %). To refine pore size, trimesoyl chloride (TMC) was utilized to crosslink surface amine groups, generating gradient-pore membranes (PPTA tpc -TMC m and PPTA ppd -TMC m ) with tunable crosslinking degrees. Systematic studies revealed that controlled crosslinking time enabled precise modulation of pore size, facilitating gradient dye rejection while balancing salt permeability. The optimized PPTA tpc -TMC 300s , PPTA ppd -TMC 20s , PPTA ppd -TMC 30s membranes achieved excellent separation factor of 710, 367, and 277 for NaCl/CR, NaCl/Acid Fuchsin (AF), and NaCl/Sunset Yellow (SY) solutions with a pure water permeance of 452.5, 42.5, 28.1 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 , respectively. Long-term stability tests confirmed sustained performance (>99 % dye rejection) due to crosslinking-enhanced structural rigidity. This study establishes a strategic paradigm for fabricating PPTA membranes with programmable pore architectures, elucidating the critical interplay between surface chemistry, tunable pore dimensions, and separation performance.

Effects of Additives on the Morphology and Performance of PPTA/PVDF in Situ Blend UF Membrane

Hong-Bin Li,Wen-Ying Shi,Yu-Feng Zhang,Dong-Qing Liu,Xiao-Feng Liu

Poly(p-phenylene terephtalamide) (PPTA), a high-performance polymer with high modulus and good hydrophilicity, is often used as a reinforced material. However, due to its high crystallity, micro-phase separation often occurs in the blends. In this paper, PPTA/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) compatible blend solution was synthesized byin situpolycondensation. Blend ultra-filtration membrane was prepared through the immersion phase inversion process. In order to obtain desired pore structure, the effects of different additives including hydrophilic polymer (polyethylene glycol (PEG)), inorganic salt (lithium chloride (LiCl)) and the surfactant (Tween-80) on the morphology and performance of PPTA/PVDF blend membranes were studied. The membrane formation process was investigated through ternary phase diagram (thermodynamics) and viscosities (kinetics) analysis. It was found that, with the increasing of LiCl content, a porous membrane structure with long finger-like pores was formed due to the accelerated demixing process which resulted in the increase of porosity and pore diameter as well as the enhancement of water flux and the decline of PEG rejection. When Tween content increased to over 3 wt%, dynamic viscosity became the main factor resulting in a decreased phase separation rate. The transfer of PEG and LiCl molecules onto membrane surface increased the surface hydrophilicity. The effect of Tween content on membrane hydrophilicity was also correlated with the compatibility of blend components.

Ag-metallized PPTA reinforced PPS films with durable electromagnetic shielding and low-voltage-driven Joule heating performance

Tongtao Zhi,Xuegang Wang,Pengcheng Zhang,Jian Wang,Yaqi Yang,Hongji Duan

PPS-PPTA-Ag laminated films were fabricated for durable EMI shielding. • Ag-metallized PPTA fabric forms a continuous conductive textile network. • PPS encapsulation enhances structural integrity and environmental stability. • The composite delivers 64.3 dB EMI SE with excellent shielding durability. • Rapid and stable low-voltage Joule heating is enabled by the Ag network. The growing demand for lightweight and portable electronic products is driving the development of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with superior and stable shielding effectiveness (SE). Herein, silver (Ag)-metallized poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) fabric/poly (phenylene sulfide) (PPS) laminated films were fabricated by polydopamine-assisted electroless Ag deposition and hot pressing for durable EMI shielding. The Ag coating transformed insulating PPTA fabric into a continuous conductive textile network, while PPS encapsulation endowed the composite with thermal stability, solvent resistance, and structural protection. The resulting PPS-PPTA-Ag film exhibited a high EMI SE of 64.3 dB in the X-band, with only a 0.6 dB decrease after 1000 bending cycles. It also retained a high SE of 62.9 dB after flame exposure and showed negligible degradation after 7 days of immersion in acidic solution, alkaline solution, and common organic solvents. Moreover, the laminated film demonstrated excellent tensile strength (∼335 MPa) and improved tribological performance. Benefiting from the continuous Ag conductive network, it enabled rapid low-voltage Joule heating, reaching 91.2 °C within 50 s at 2.0 V, along with stable cyclic and long-term electrothermal performance. These results indicate that the PPS-PPTA-Ag composite film shows great potential for durable EMI shielding and electrically driven thermal management applications.

In-situ synthesis of PPTA nanomaterials in PS matrix and their enhanced performances in PS-based nanocomposite

Yaoqin Wu,Zhiping Zhao,Changmei Sun,Chunnuan Ji,Ying Zhang,Rongjun Qu,Ying Wang

In this paper, aramid nanomaterials (ANM) were successfully prepared in N -methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) solution containing polystyrene (PS) by in-situ condensation of para -phenylenediamine (PPD) and para -benzoyl chloride (TPC). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that the morphologies of ANM varied significantly including nanosphere, nanorod and nanobundle, all of which depended on the reactant concentration. The obtained ANM with different morphologies could uniformly distribute within PS matrix without undesirable agglomeration and poor compatibility with PS. ANM/PS nanocomposites were prepared simply by solution method. The fracture cross sections and surface roughness of ANM/PS were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM).   Furthermore, thermal stability and mechanical properties of ANM/PS were tested. It was shown that ANM significantly improved the mechanical properties and thermal stability of PS, which may open up opportunities for new applications of these ANM/PS nanocomposites.

Breaking the corrosive solvent paradigm: Scalable wet-spinning of PPTA/MWCNT composite fibers with unprecedented strength-functionality balance

Fengdong Teng,Ying Yuan,Na Li,Yutong Cao,Junrong Yu,Yan Wang,Zuming Hu

Currently, the high performance and multifunctional integration of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) fibers are still facing the limitations of the use of corrosive solvents and the poor dispersion of functional fillers in the polymer matrix. Herein, PPTA prepolymers with controlled degrees of polymerization were designed as macromolecular monomers and co-dispersed with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in a composite medium consisting of polar solvent and co-solvent to synthesize a high molecular weight PPTA/MWCNT (PMC) solution via in situ secondary polymerization. The non-covalent adsorption of MWCNT by the prepolymer molecules combined with a mild secondary polymerization process ensured the homogeneous dispersion of MWCNT in PPTA solution. Subsequently, the PMC solution was processed into fibers by an efficient and controllable wet spinning process, and the strength and modulus of PMC fibers were as high as 1.61 GPa and 51.5 GPa. Furthermore, the three-dimensional conductive-thermal network formed by MWCNT endowed PMC fabrics with an electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of 32.6 dB in the X-band and enhanced thermal conductivity by 58.2 % compared with pure PPTA fabrics. This work provides a scalable and environmentally benign strategy for manufacturing high-strength PPTA fibers and their multifunctional fabrics.

Nitrogen and Oxygen Dual Self-Doped Flexible PPTA Nanofiber Carbon Paper as an Effective Interlayer for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Ling Meng,Yao Li,Qixuan Lin,Jin Long,Yang Wang,Jian Hu

The shuttle effect of polysulfides during charge and discharge processes is a critical problem that seriously limits the application of Li–S batteries. Herein, a flexible nanofiber carbon paper was first fabricated from poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) nanofiber and carbon fiber (CF) as an effective interlayer for high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries. The nanofiber carbon paper processes abundant meso-/micropores and high heteroatom contents, which are beneficial for the inhibition of the shuttle effect of polysulfides through physical adsorption and chemical catalysis. Therefore, the electrochemical reaction kinetics are remarkably improved. The primary discharge capacity of cells with PPTA/CF carbon paper achieves 1373 mA h g–1 at 0. 1 C with a 96.2% utilization rate of active materials. The specific reversible discharge capacity maintains 755 mA h g–1 at 5 C, with a 99.7% coulomb efficiency. This flexible nanofiber carbon paper will have a promising application in high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries.

A porous and flame-retardant rGO/PPTA modified PP composite separator suitable for high electrochemical performance and excellent security of lithium metal battery

Zewei Zhang,Xiaoqi Song,Ting Yu,Xiping Lei

Thanks to their high energy density, small size, and light weight, lithium-metal batteries have been widely used over an extended period. However, lithium ions cannot be uniformly deposited, and their poor heat resistance hinders the practical application of lithium-metal batteries. Therefore, it is necessary to design a kind of separator with high electrolyte affinity and good heat resistance in order to improve the problem of a commercial separator. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and polyphenylene terephthamide (PPTA) were combined in different ratios and coated onto one side of a commercial polypropylene (PP) separator using a feasible coating technique. A comparison of electrolyte absorptivity and flame retardancy revealed that the composite separator exhibited superior properties compared to those of a PP separator. The rGO2/PPTA3@PP separator with hierarchical porosity and flame-retardant properties, exhibited high ion conductivity (0.59 × 10−3 S cm−1) and an improved lithium-ion transfer number (0.57) at room temperature. By using the composite separator in an LiFePO4‖Li battery, the discharge specific capacity could still reach 125.6 mA h g−1 even after 100 cycles under 1C. After undergoing a high–low temperature cycle, the average discharge specific capacity could remain 151 mA h g−1 at 50 °C and 51 mA h g−1 at −10 °C. In addition, after 1100 h cycles in the assembled Li‖Li symmetric battery, no obvious lithium dendrites appeared on the lithium metal surface, indicating that the composite separator could successfully inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites. This study presents a promising approach for the large-scale production of novel composite separators with high electrochemical performance and safety.
