Abstract The rapid development of modern precision electronic components placed stringent demands on highly sensitive voltage overload protection and thermal management, and the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect observed in conductive polymer composites (CPCs) played a crucial role in this regard. However, once the polymer matrix had melted, most PTC composites exhibited a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) effect, while the excessive rigidity and brittleness of traditional ceramics limited their practical applications. This study presented a PTC ink composite material. The method involved the synergistic use of a thermosetting epoxy resin (EP) matrix and paraffin wax (PW), a material with a high expansion ratio, with γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550)-grafted carbon black (KCB) serving as the conductive filler, printed on the film using screen printing. The results indicate that the formation of static covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds at the interface between KCB and the epoxy resin effectively eliminates the influence of NTC. This ink exhibits sensitive temperature responsiveness at 30–50 °C, extends the PTC plateau, and achieves a PTC intensity of 3. Compared with traditional heating elements, this PTC ink composite offers advantages such as rapid response, sensitivity, and the ability to meet the start-up temperature requirements of electronic devices in cold conditions, as well as temperature self-limiting properties, safety, and convenience. These epoxy-based PTC composite materials show great promise in applications such as thermal protection for electronic components and battery circuit protection.

The application of the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) materials in electrothermal anti-icing offers not only uniform heating of the anti-icing area, but also adaptive temperature control of the material. This study focuses on the preparation of a low Curie point PTC material with a Curie temperature point of 1 °C, using the in-situ polymerization method. The PTC behaviors of the material were extensively investigated by adjusting the component ratios and the microstructures of the materials were analyzed in correlation with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Subsequently, adaptive temperature control and stability experiments were conducted to evaluate the material's performance. Eventually, the material was adopted to electrothermal anti-icing experiment for wind turbine blades. The results demonstrate that when the mass fraction of acetylene black is 9 wt%, the mass ratio of n-tetradecane/hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (HTPDMS) is 1:1, and the mass ratio of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/HTPDMS is 1:2, the low-temperature resistivity of the low Curie point PTC material reaches an impressive value of only 5.37 Ω cm, the PTC intensity can reach 2.99, and the thermal conductivity can reach 0.778 W/(m·K). Furthermore, the material exhibits robust adaptive temperature control capability, effectively maintaining the temperature below 3 °C under different operating voltages and ambient temperatures. Even after 100 cyclic experiments, the material demonstrates superior PTC behavior, excellent temperature control ability, and exceptional stability. Additionally, under different operating voltages, ambient temperatures and wind speeds, the low Curie point PTC material exhibits excellent adaptive adjustment capability and maintains uniform heating of the anti-icing surface. These findings provide valuable insights for in-depth exploration of the low Curie point PTC electrothermal anti-icing materials.

PTC material is a positive temperature coefficient heat-sensitive material, and when used as a heating element for electrothermal anti-icing, it exhibits adaptive temperature control. This paper aims to establish and experimentally verify a conductive model for the low Curie point PTC material based on the distribution and blending characteristics of HTPDMS, PDMS, n-tetradecane and acetylene black. Additionally, various mass proportions of the low Curie point PTC materials in the conductive region are prepared and analyzed to understand their PTC effects. Finally, the feasibility of employing the low Curie point PTC material for electrothermal anti-icing is verified through anti-icing experiment. The results demonstrate that the resistivity of the materials with different mass proportions in the seepage and conductive regions conforms to the conductive model proposed in this study. Specifically, when the mass proportion of n-tetradecane/HTPDMS is 1:1, and the mass proportion of PDMS/HTPDMS is 1:2, the low Curie point PTC material exhibits a Curie temperature of 1 °C, with a low-temperature resistivity of only 5.37 Ω cm and a PTC intensity of 2.99. Notably, after subjecting the material to 100 thermal cycle experiments, there is no significant change in the Curie temperature point. The low-temperature resistivity slightly increases, while the PTC intensity declines marginally, and no obvious negative temperature coefficient (NTC) effect is observed, confirming the material's excellent stability. The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the low Curie point PTC anti-icing materials and lay a solid foundation for their future application in anti-icing systems for fans, airplanes, and various surfaces.

PTC (positive temperature coefficient) material is a kind of thermo-sensitive material. In this study, a series of novel PTC materials adapted to thermal control of electron devices are prepared. By adding different low-melting-point blend matrixes into GP (graphite powder)/LDPE (low density polyethylene) composite, the Curie temperatures are adjusted to 9 °C, 25 °C, 34 °C and 41 °C, and the resistance–temperature coefficients are enhanced to 1.57/°C–2.15/°C. These PTC materials remain solid in the temperature region of PTC effect, which makes it possible to be used as heating element to achieve adaptive temperature control. In addition, the adaptive thermal control performances of this kind of materials are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The result shows that the adaptive effect becomes more significant while the resistance–temperature coefficient increases. A critical heating power defined as the initial heating power which makes the equilibrium temperature reach terminal temperature is presented. The adaptive temperature control will be effective only if the initial power is below this value. The critical heating power is determined by the Curie temperature and resistance–temperature coefficient of PTC materials, and a higher Curie temperature or resistance–temperature coefficient will lead to a larger critical heating power.

Background Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid malignancy, with a rising incidence. Traditional treatments, such as thyroidectomy and radiotherapy, often lead to significant side effects, including impaired thyroid function. Therefore, there is an urgent need for non-invasive therapeutic approaches. This study aims to explore the potential of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), a non-invasive treatment using specific wavelengths of light, in the management of PTC. Methods We investigated the effects of blue light PBMT on PTC cells, focusing on the Retinal-OPSIN 3 (OPN3) complex’s role in mediating cellular responses. Blue light exposure was applied to PTC cells, and subsequent changes in cellular proliferation, cell cycle progression, and protein expression were analyzed. Statistical tests, including one-way ANOVA and t-tests, were used to evaluate the significance of the findings. Results Blue light exposure led to the dissociation of 11-cis-retinal from OPN3, resulting in the accumulation of all-trans retinal. This accumulation disrupted cellular proliferation pathways and induced G0/G1 cell cycle arrest in PTC cells. The Retinal-OPN3 complex was found to be a key mediator in these processes, demonstrating that thyroid cells can respond to specific light wavelengths and utilize their photoreceptive potential for therapeutic purposes. Conclusions Our findings suggest that PBMT, through the modulation of the Retinal-OPN3 complex, offers a promising non-invasive approach for treating PTC. This study highlights the therapeutic potential of light signal transduction in non-ocular tissues and opens new avenues for non-invasive cancer therapies.

The residue of chloramphenicol (CAP) in animal-derived foods and the environment poses a serious threat to human health, highlighting the urgent need for sensitive, selective, and rapid detection methods. In this study, a novel electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET)-based sensing platform was developed for the ultrasensitive detection of CAP, employing a Tb-PTC/Ag MOF composite as the energy donor and hollow ZIF-8@polydopamine (ZIF-8@PDA) as the energy acceptor. Coordination of Tb 3+ with PTCA ligands within the MOF framework effectively suppressed aggregation-induced quenching, while the incorporation of Ag MOF further enhanced and stabilized the ECL intensity through synergistic effects. Efficient ECL-RET was achieved owing to the spectral overlap between the UV-vis absorption of the acceptor and the ECL emission of the donor, with a high energy transfer efficiency of 75.1%, significantly improving the sensitivity of the sensor. The proposed platform exhibited a wide linear range from 10 −5 to 10 −15 mol L −1 for CAP detection, with an exceptionally low detection limit of 1.57 × 10 −15 mol L −1 . By integrating the structural advantages of MOFs with the high sensitivity of the ECL-RET strategy, this work establishes a robust and promising platform for trace-level CAP monitoring in environmental and food samples. Thermochromic wood is an important research direction for wood modification in recent years, and a red poplar-based thermochromic composite (R-PTC) had been prepared in our previous study by compositing a mixture of phase change reagents (tetradecyl ester: C28H56O2 and methyl red: C15H15N3O2) and full poplar wood. In order to improve the heating storage ability of R-PTC and encapsulating phase change reagents to prevent leakage, a new R-PTC composite (PS-R-PTC) was prepared by encapsulated R-PTC with polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400)–SiO2 in this work. Compared to the original R-PTC samples, the cell walls of PS-R-PTC were not significantly changed by the SiO2 film and we also found that PS-R-PTC with PEG400 (90%)–silica solutions (10%) mixture had better heat storage performance and PS-R-PTC (90%) has better enthalpy change value (R-PTC: 43.01 J g−1; PS-R-PTC (90%): 71.82 J g−1). The PS-R-PTC can show the function of thermal energy storage, which is used in wooden buildings and can be a feasible insulating material for reducing thermal energy losses and hence reducing energy usage. In PS-R-PTC, SiO2 combines with the –OH of the R-PTC and the –OH of PEG400 (HO(CH2CH2O)nH), and these –OH lose hydrogen ions too.

Positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heaters are widely used in self-regulating heating applications. However, it remains challenging to develop PTC heaters that can operate efficiently at low temperatures (<50 °C). Herein, we demonstrate the design of low-transition-temperature (39.5 °C) adaptive PTC composites by the combination of thermally responsive polyethylene glycol (PEG) and conductive carbon black (CB) in a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix. The reversible melting and crystallization of the PEG component enable dynamic reconstruction of the conductive network. The results demonstrate that the CB@PEG/TPU composite exhibits an exceptionally high PTC intensity of up to 2.7 at a low transition temperature (39.5 °C) while maintaining a low resistivity of 0.4 Ω·m. The resultant CB@PEG/TPU heater exhibits excellent temperature stability with a temperature fluctuation of 2.1 °C under the environmental conditions of −10 to 10 °C. The outstanding comprehensive performance indicates that the CB@PEG/TPU composite holds broad application prospects in the field of self-regulating heating.

Thermal safety is crucial for the large-scale application of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in electric vehicles and energy storage stations. To boost thermal safety of LIBs, we propose herein a reversible temperature-responsive membrane (RTRM) and use this membrane as surface-modification layer of current collector to develop temperature-responsive cathodes. The RTRM is fabricated by uniformly dispersing conductive fillers of short-cut carbon fibers (CCFs) in a blended plastic matrix of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) through solution casting. Benefiting from the large thermal expansion provided by LDPE and good structural reproducibility given rise by the ultra-high melt viscosity of UHMWPE, the as-fabricated RTRM exhibits a strong and reversible positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect, with its resistivity increasing sharply by 7.1 orders of magnitude at 110–120 °C and returning to the initial value reversibly upon cooling down even after 30 thermal cycles. As a result, the LiFePO 4 cathode with the RTRM demonstrates a reversible temperature-switching behavior by spontaneously halting the electrode reaction at elevated temperatures and resuming the electrode reaction upon cooling, thereby providing reversible thermal protection for LIBs. Notably, such a temperature-switchable cathode maintains normal charge-discharge performance even after 28 thermal on/off cycles. This study offers a promising strategy for developing temperature-responsive cathode and thermally self-regulating smart LIBs.

Positive temperature coefficient (PTC) materials usually have NTC effect, and the effect is poor. In this paper, conductive carbon black (CB) and amorphous elastomer (TPO) were introduced into high-density polyethylene (HDPE) by melting mixing and hot pressing methods and treated with peroxide crosslinking to improve the PTC properties of conductive composites. The results show that the percolation threshold reduces from 24 wt% to 22 wt% for crosslinked elastic networks. At the same time, the room temperature resistance of the composite material does not show monotonicity after three cycles, which has good reproducibility and eliminates the NTC effect of the composite material. This work provides both a simple way to produce high-performance PTC materials and a new idea to improve the stability of PTC materials.

This study explores an efficient encapsulation strategy to improve the dielectric insulation properties of epoxy (EP) composites. The integration of different concentrations of BST@SiO 2 into the EP matrix markedly enhances the overall performance of the composites, particularly under high-temperature conditions and diverse electric fields. The core–shell structure, where barium strontium titanate (BST) particles are coated with an insulating silica shell, serves to reduce DC electrical conductivity, prevent space charge accumulation, and improve DC breakdown strength. The silica coating restricts the movement of charge carriers, while the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) characteristics of BST further enhances insulation properties by transitioning to an insulative state near the Curie temperature. The electrical double-layer effect in the composite helps to suppress excessive charge injection through Coulombic repulsion, preventing the formation of high local electric fields, which are often a direct cause of electrical breakdown. This mechanism ensures higher breakdown strength by delaying the occurrence of critical local fields. The encapsulated BST@SiO 2 particles provide improved thermal stability, contributing to the composite’s ability to retain superior dielectric properties at elevated temperatures. The reported methodology for fabricating these nanocomposites offers valuable insights into developing EP-based materials with enhanced insulation properties, particularly for high-performance applications.

A simple process in which a graphene oxide (GO)–Prussian Blue (PB)-3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride derivative (PTC-NH 2 ) nanocomposite film is spread onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface is described. Glucose oxidase (GOD) was adsorbed on the modified glass carbon electrode via the specific structure of hollow Pt nanospheres. This process was sufficient to prevent GOD from leaching away, and to improve the sensitivity of our sensor. To characterise the sensors, several techniques were employed, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electric impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and chronoamperometry. The resulting amperometric glucose biosensor exhibited a fast response time (within 5 s) and a good linear calibration range from 0.01 ± 0.06 mM to 5.23 ± 0.04 mM with a lower limit of detection of 3.3 μM ( S / N = 3). Possible interferents, including ascorbic acid, l-cysteine, dopamine and ethanol, showed almost negligible electrochemical responses, indicating the high specificity of the proposed biosensor for glucose detection. The improved performance of the proposed electrode for detecting glucose in human serum was ascribed to the high surface-to-volume ratio and the excellent conductivity of the hollow Pt nanospheres. This skilful strategy of incorporating the GO/PB/PTC-NH 2 nanocomposite film with hollow Pt nanospheres enhances the performance of the electrochemical sensor, which holds promising for application in bioassay analysis.
