Tailoring crosslinking networks to fabricate photocurable polyurethane acrylate (PUA) dielectric elastomer with balanced electromechanical performance

Lulu Xiong,Delong Li,Yongfei Yang,Xiaoxiao Ye,Yu Huang,E. Xu,Chuanhui Xia,Mingbo Yang,Zhengying Liu,Xudong Cui,Feng Wang,Yanhao Huang

The trade-off between high dielectric permittivity and low Young's modulus is always a challenge for fabricating high-performance polyurethane acylate (PUA) based dielectric elastomers (DEs). In this work, networks with scattered crosslinking points (type-I) and domains of concentrated crosslinking points (type-II) that being prepared by different functional telechelic ends, were mainly introduced into the photocured PUA elastomers. As the increasing of chain length between crosslinking points ( N e ), the Young's modulus ( Y ) of the PUA was restrained below 1.2 MPa while the elongation at break ( E B ) markedly increased. Compared to type-I network, a longer N e in type-II network can lower the overall crosslinking density, which endows the materials with a relatively low Y (ca. 0.83 MPa) and a large E B (389%). In addition, the concentrated crosslinking points in type-II network enhanced the polarization effect between entangled long chains and crosslinking domains, which further upraised the dielectric permittivity of the elastomer up to 74.17 @ 10 3  Hz. The actuation strain of the PUA elastomer with type II network can reach utmost 13.88% @ 45.41 V∙μm −1 without any pre-strain. This work offers a new strategy to fabricate photocurable dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) with balanced electromechanical performance.

A photocuring PUA material with adjustable flexibility used in the fast photochromic coating on ophthalmic lenses

Zhenquan He,Yansong Wang,Yongzeng Fang,Qinghua Meng

To resolve the problem of inhomogeneous color depth during photochromism, the photochromic coating on the surface of a pre-molded lens as well as the photocuring process are proposed. The host polyurethane acryl (PUA) material with adjustable flexibility was constructed from isophorone diisocyanate trimer (t-IPDI ). The polycarbonatediol ( PCDL ) was used for chain extension and the hydroxyethyl methylacrylate ( HEMA ) was introduced to the lateral chain for the subsequent photo-crosslinking. Multiple experimental conditions were optimized, which included selection of the photoinitiator ( PI ), operating spectral window for photocuring and the equivalent ratio of HEMA to NCO group. The spectrokinetics behavior of photochromic coating was investigated by monitoring relative grayscales (Gy*) with irradiation and fading time. The glass-transition temperature ( T g ) was measured by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) as well. An attempt of application of this photochromic coating on the surface of a commercial lens blank was made tentatively.

Tuning the stiffness of two-photon polymerized elastomer by controlling the sparsity and helicity of printing paths

Yu Long,Tao Wang,Yan Wang,Xiaolong Huang,Yu Lei,Jianguan Hua,Biwei Deng,Yan Li

Two-photon polymerization (TPP) is one of the emerging technologies for manufacturing high-precision micro-nano 3D structures. Common resin materials used in TPP are limited to, for example, acrylates or epoxy oligomers. The mechanical properties of these resins are difficult to tune after exposure, limiting their applications in advanced fields such as biomedicine, soft robotics, and microelectronics. In this work, an elastomer photoresist based on polyurethane acrylate (PUA) is designed, which combines the flexibility of polyurethane with the rapid curing characteristics of acrylates. Microstructures with good self-supporting properties are prepared by TPP-3D printing, and the mechanical properties of the elastomer photoresist are tuned by controlling the line spacing and rotation angle. Through in-situ compression tests, it is found that the modulus of the elastomer photoresist could be tuned from 284 MPa to 665 MPa, the yield strength from 43 MPa to 59 MPa, and the initial cycle energy absorption from 18 MJ/m 3 to 27 MJ/m 3 , showcasing an effective strategy of tuning mechanical properties through printing parameters. Finally, three types of recoverable structures are designed and printed, validating the potential of this elastomer photoresist for applications in flexible electronics and microelectronic device protection. This study provides an effective approach for the design of elastomer photoresist and the tunable mechanical properties of TPP-3D printed structure.

Reprogramming the thermal degradation pathway of PVC/PUA foams via In-Situ crosslinking: Toward low smoke and flame-triggered shape memory

Tao Sun,Yong Wang,Senhao Lei,Yangtao Zhang,Bo Peng,Zhenhao Meng,Jie Liu,Zhiwei Jiang,Tao Tang

PVC/PUA/CPVC nanocomposite foams were fabricated via a plasticizing-foaming-reinforcing strategy. • PUA catalyzes the dehydrogenation of CPVC, forming a rigid preliminary carbonized skeleton and restructuring the pyrolysis pathway. • Condensed-phase trapping of volatile smoke precursors improves simultaneously flame retardancy and smoke suppression. • The optimized PVC/PUA/CPVC nanocomposite foam achieves excellent fire safety. High-performance poly(vinyl chloride)-based ternary nanocomposite foams, incorporating polyurea and chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC/PUA/CPVC), were prepared using "plasticizing-foaming-reinforcing" (PFR) strategy. Here PUA strengthened PVC matrix and CPVC endowed excellent flame retardancy. The incorporation of CPVC significantly enhances the fire safety of the foam while well-preserving its original superior mechanical properties and solvent resistance. Specifically, the foam not only achieves a UL-94 V-0 rating, but its limiting oxygen index (LOI) is also increased to 35.7%, while the maximum smoke density (MSD) and smoke density rating (SDR) are decreased to 83% and 75%, respectively. The essence of this superior performance lies in the reconstruction of the pyrolysis pathway in the condensed phase. Catalytically accelerated by PUA during early pyrolysis, CPVC generates abundant highly reactive conjugated polyenes that rapidly undergo self-cyclization and cross-linking to in-situ construct a rigid preliminary char skeleton. This skeleton-building process kinetically outpaces the acid-catalyzed melt-collapse of the matrix. Simultaneously, the crosslinked structure robustly immobilizes the monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) generated from PVC degradation within the condensed phase within the condensed phase, forcing their in-situ aromatization and transformation into a highly graphitized, dense char layer. Furthermore, leveraging the unique "sea-island" microphase-separated structure within the cell walls and its excellent ablation resistance, the PVC/PUA/CPVC nanocomposite foam exhibits a rapid flame-triggered shape memory behavior, demonstrating broad application prospects in the field of smart fire-alarm sensors.

Enhanced physical properties of UV-cured transparent PUA coating based on a “nanoparticle take root on surface” strategy by dual-functionalized nano-silica

Taikao Su,Sensen Liu,Lan Wang,Zhenwei Jiang,Haoyong Yin,Ling Wang,Cuiyun Zhang,Xianjing Zhou,Xinping Wang

Inspired by the rooting of seeds, dual-functionalized silica nanoparticles (FM x SiO 2 ) with both perfluorooctyl (F) and methacrylate (M) groups were prepared and used to develop a UV-cured polyurethane acrylate (PUA) hybrid coating having a unique balance of high hardness, excellent transparency, and superior anti-smudge performance. The FM x SiO 2 nanoparticles with various F/M ratios (x) were synthesized via a controlled sol-gel process and co-modified by changing the volume ratios of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (FAS-17) to 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS). The methacrylate groups (from MPTS) enabled covalent crosslinking with the polymer matrix during photopolymerization, while the perfluorodecyl groups (from FAS-17) facilitated nanoparticle migration to the surface, forming a low surface energy layer. The optimized hybrid coating with 5 wt% FM 5 SiO 2 exhibited outstanding mechanical and surface properties, including a pencil hardness of 9H, a Young's modulus of 42.7 GPa, and visible light transmittance of up to 97%. Furthermore, the surface energy was significantly reduced to 25.8 mJ·m −2 , endowing the coating with excellent water and oil repellency, scratch resistance, and self-cleaning behavior. These excellent physical properties were attributed to FM x SiO 2 NPs with efficient surface migration and uniform dispersion having strong interfacial bonding with PUA. This study provides a synergistic design strategy that combines nanoscale reinforcement and surface-energy regulation to fabricate transparent, mechanically robust, and self-cleaning UV-curable coatings.

UV curable PUA ink with polymerizable surfactant-enhanced Ag@PPy for fabricating flexible and durable conductive coating on the surface of cotton fabric

Xiutian Guo,Jiale Yao,Fengxian Ji,Rui Wang,Longyun Hao

In this study, a stable silver@polypyrrole (Ag@PPy) composite was prepared with the help of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and polymerizable surfactant ammonium allyloxynonylphenol ethoxylate (DNS-86). It was then combined with polyurethane acrylate (PUA) to prepare a conductive ink and applied on the surface of cotton fabric. By an energy-saving and sustainable UV curing method, the ink was effectively fixed to fabricate flexible and durable textile. The effects of DNS-86 on the properties of Ag@PPy composite were investigated and the results showed that DNS-86 could reduce its size, make its distribution more uniform and improve its stability. Then, the effects of DNS-86 on the performance of conductive coating on fabric were analyzed by measuring the resistance and water contact angle, revealing that DNS-86 could participate in the UV film-forming reaction of PUA molecules, so as to optimize the film structure for higher conductivity. Finally, the effect of DNS-86 on the flexibility and durability of conductive coating were evaluated. The results indicated that DNS-86 could improve the structural integrity and toughness of PUA film, enhance the adhesion between conductive coating and cotton surface, and make it more resistant to various environmental erosions.

The synergy of catalytic nano-enzymes and fouling-release coating: Peroxidase-like Cu NPs composited polysiloxane-based polyurethane PDMS-PUA with enhanced antifouling properties

Mengnan Li,Jiawen Sun,Xiaofan Zhai,Jing Yang,Hongmei Ding,Jianrong Song,Sujuan Ye,Jizhou Duan

Marine biofouling presents a significant global challenge today. Silicone-based coatings have garnered considerable interest due to their low surface energy characteristics. However, their practical applications are limited by poor mechanical properties, weak adhesion, and poor static antifouling performance. In response to these inherent limitations, this study innovatively proposed a novel strategy of synergistic nano enzyme-catalyzed sterilization and low surface energy antifouling. A nanocomposite coating, PDMS-PUA-F-Cu, was developed by incorporating peroxidase-like copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) into a silicone-based polyurethane (PDMS-PUA). The PDMS-PUA was first synthesized through a two-step process using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (HO-PDMS-OH), and 4,4′-methylenebis(3-chloro-2,6-diethylaniline) (MCDEA) as raw materials. Subsequently, Cu NPs modified with IPDI and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were incorporated into PDMS-PUA to obtain the PDMS-PUA-F-Cu. The resulting coating exhibited enhanced hardness (∼21 MPa) and strong substrate adhesion (∼1.75 MPa) while retaining hydrophobicity and low surface energy. More importantly, the peroxidase-like activity of Cu NPs catalyzed the generation of reactive oxygen species (·OH and ·O 2 − ), enabling dynamic sterilization that significantly enhances the antifouling performance. Experimental results demonstrated outstanding antibacterial rates of ∼98.6 % against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and ∼98.8 % against Staphylococcus aureus , along with remarkable inhibition of Chlorella. adhesion (∼97.4 %). Mechanistic studies confirmed that the synergy between nano enzyme-driven biocidal activity and low surface energy effectively overcame the static antifouling limitations of traditional silicone coatings. This work provides a viable approach for developing high-performance antifouling coatings by combining catalytic sterilization with low-surface-energy coatings.
