Interface induced performance enhancement in flexible BaTiO3/PVDF-TrFE based piezoelectric nanogenerators

Kunming Shi,Bin Chai,Haiyang Zou,Peiyue Shen,Bin Sun,Pingkai Jiang,Zhiwen Shi,Xingyi Huang

Nanocomposites consisting of a flexible piezoelectric polymer and a reinforcing phase have shown great potential for constructing high-performance piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs). However, the weak interface and poor dispersion of piezoelectric reinforcing phase significantly impair the electromechanical properties (e.g. , effective stress/strain, piezoelectric coefficients) of the nanocomposites, thus severely restricting the performance enhancement of the PENGs. In this study, we hydrothermally synthesized the piezoelectric reinforcing phase of BaTiO 3 nanowires , and grafted a layer of high-modulus polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) onto the nanowire surface via surface-initiated polymerization. The PMMA coating layer forms a strong interface between BaTiO 3 nanowires and the polymer matrix [i.e ., poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene)], which efficiently improves dispersion of the BaTiO 3 nanowires and stress transfer at the interface, therefore resulting in an enhanced output performance in the fibrous nanocomposite PENGs. The output voltage and current of the PMMA encapsulated BaTiO 3 (PMMA@BaTiO 3 ) nanowires-based PENG can reach to 12.6 V and 1.30 μA, with a maximum output power of 4.25 μW, which is 2.2 times and 7.6 times higher than the PENG with unmodified BaTiO 3 nanowires and the PENG without BaTiO 3 nanowires, respectively. Furthermore, the flexible PENG exhibits great stability that could continuously generate stable electrical pulses for 6000 cycles without any decline. This study provides a feasible approach of interface tailoring for achieving high-performance piezoelectric nanocomposite and shows the promising potential of the fibrous nanocomposites in biomechanical energy harvesters and smart wearable sensors.

Porous, Self-Polarized Ferroelectric Polymer Films Exhibiting Behavior Reminiscent of Morphotropic Phase Boundary Induced by Size-Dependent Interface Effect for Self-Powered Sensing

Heng Yao,Zhaoyue Xia,Jing Wang,Huang Lin,Hui Yang,Qilong Zhang

Piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymer, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)), have attracted considerable attention due to their potential in flexible, biocompatible energy harvesting and sensing devices. However, their limited piezoelectric performance hinders their widespread application. Inspired by the concept of morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) prevalent in high-performance piezoelectric ceramics, we successfully constructed MPB in the piezoelectric polymer P(VDF-TrFE) through size-dependent interface effects. We provided direct structural evidence using atomic force microscopy-infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) and significantly improved the piezoelectric performance of P(VDF-TrFE). The emergence of MPB is attributed to the interface effect induced by electrostatic interactions between ZnO fillers and the −CH2, −CF2, and −CHF groups in P(VDF-TrFE). This interaction drives a concomitant competition between the all-trans β phase (normal ferroelectric) and the 3/1 helical phase (relaxor), resulting in enhanced piezoelectric responses in the transition region. By coupling the MPB effect with a porous structure, we developed a piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) that surpasses the electrical output limitation of current P(VDF-TrFE)-based PENGs. The fabricated PENG exhibits superior piezoelectric outputs (6.9 μW/cm2), impressive pressure sensitivity (2.3038 V/kPa), ultrafast response time (4.3 ms), and recovery time (46.4 ms)─notably, without the need for additional poling treatment. In practical applications, the constructed PENG can efficiently generate characteristic signals in response to various human movements and harvest biomechanical energy. This work offers insight into utilizing interface-induced MPB and proposes a simple, scalable approach for developing high-performance self-polarized piezoelectric polymer films for self-powered sensing systems toward human–machine interaction.

Acoustic Core–Shell Resonance Harvester for Application of Artificial Cochlea Based on the Piezo-Triboelectric Effect

Jiaqi Zheng,Zhaohan Yu,Yunming Wang,Yue Fu,Dan Chen,Huamin Zhou

The demand for flexible, efficient, and self-powered cochlear implants applied to remedy sensorineural hearing loss caused by dysfunctional hair cells remains urgent. Herein, we report an acoustic core–shell resonance harvester for the application of artificial cochleae based on the piezo-triboelectric effect. Integrating dispersed BaTiO3 particles as cores and porous PVDF-TrFE as shells, the acoustic harvest devices with ingenious core–shell structures exhibit outstanding piezo-triboelectric properties (Voc = 15.24 V, DAsc = 9.22 mA/m2). The acoustic harvest principle reveals that BaTiO3 nanocores resonate with sound waves and bounce against porous PVDF-TrFE microshells, thereby generating piezo-triboelectric signals. By experimental measurement and numerical modeling, the vibration process and resonance regulation of acoustic harvest devices were intensively investigated to regulate the influential parameters. Furthermore, the acoustic harvesters exhibit admirable feasibility and sensitivity for sound recording and show potential application for artificial cochlea.

Robust, transparent, and superhydrophobic PVDF-TrFE/PDMS nanofiber coatings for anti-fogging and anti-icing

Alix Marcelle Sansi Seukep,Damas Rossel Pandzou,Zhixiang Cui,Dhandapani Kuzhandaivel,Lionel Kinkpe,Xuan Zhou,Zixiang Weng,Longhui Zheng,Jianlei Wang,Xiaohong Ding,Lixin Wu

Superhydrophobic coatings often present a trade-off between transparency and mechanical robustness for glass substrates. Inspired by the general concept of natural superhydrophobic surfaces, a highly transparent superhydrophobic anti-icing composite coating based on a Polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE)/Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) blend polymer via electrospinning technology has been developed. By constructing a PVDF-TrFE/PDMS nanofiber network on a silanized trimethylsilane (TMS-s) /polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) promoter layer (which acts as an interface-strengthening layer), the gradient structure design of the functional coating on the glass substrate was successfully realized. Experimental results demonstrate that the TMS-s/PDMS promoter layer significantly enhances the interfacial bonding strength between the PVDF-TrFE/PDMS nanofibers and the glass substrate, achieving a water contact angle of 154.1° ± 4°, a sliding angle of 3° ± 1°, and approximately 92.6 % transmittance. The adhesion-enhancing mechanism is further investigated through molecular dynamics simulation analysis. Results reveal that the introduction of TMS-s increases interfacial adhesion, attributed to strong siloxane bonds formed between TMS-s and the glass surface, as well as Si-O-C bonds between TMS-s and PDMS. This combination of interactions significantly improves the coating's mechanical robustness. This study provides a novel strategy for multifunctional protective coatings in applications such as building windows, solar panels, automotive windshields, and aircraft windows.

Physicochemical properties and biocompatibility of 3D printed PVDF-TrFE-CPS composite bone scaffolds with piezoelectric properties

Yadong Chen,Guangteng Zhang,Da Ge,Meichen Wang,Tao Wu,Zheng Zou

The repair of bone defects remains a significant clinical challenge due to their structural complexity and patient-specific variability. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based piezoelectric materials have attracted considerable attention owing to their excellent biocompatibility and piezoelectric properties; however, their non-degradability restricts further application in bone tissue engineering. To address this limitation, a composite scaffold composed of degradable poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) and calcium phosphate silicate (CPS) was fabricated via three-dimensional (3D) printing, integrating structural customizability with multifunctional performance. The results demonstrated that after 7 days of hydration, the scaffold exhibited a compressive strength of 7.6–8.38 MPa and a piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 ) of 6.01 pC/N, exceeding that of native cancellous bone while maintaining good stability. Moreover, the scaffold displayed enhanced mineralization capacity, promoted osteoblast proliferation (102.7–107.6 %) and alkaline phosphatase activity, and maintained moderate mass loss with stable pH during degradation, thereby providing a favorable microenvironment for bone regeneration. Collectively, the 3D-printed PVDF-TrFE-CPS composite scaffold demonstrated synergistic effects in structural regulation, mechanical support, piezoelectric stimulation, and osteoinductivity, offering a promising strategy for the personalized repair of complex bone defects.

Electrical signal coupled with mechanochromic feedback: Stretchable dual-mode piezoelectric sensor for cross-validated biomechanical monitoring

Haohai Wang,Zhaojun Min,Pengxin Zhao,Wenting Yang,Yufeng Jiao,Kang Chen,Wenjun Peng,Xianming Zhang,Dalai Jin

The rapid development of flexible electronics offers new opportunities for wearable sensors, among which piezoelectric materials are attractive due to their ability to generate electrical signals without external power. However, traditional piezoelectric sensors face challenges, including single-mode signals, low sensitivity under dynamic strain, and mechanical mismatch with soft tissues. Herein, we address these limitations through the primary innovation of a stretchable dual-mode sensor that uniquely integrates a high-performance piezoelectric composite of polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene copolymer (PVDF-TrFE) and gallium‑indium eutectic liquid metal (EGaIn) with a mechanochromic visualization layer. Through the combined action of electrospinning, annealing, and liquid metal addition, the β -phase crystallization increased significantly from 36.4 % to 80.0 %, improving the piezoelectric performance. By integrating a mechanochromic liquid crystal elastomer layer, the sensor provides dual-mode feedback: electrical signals serve as data for quantitative analysis, while the corresponding color changes offer intuitive, real-time visual feedback. The latter can also be quantified via its G/B ratio, thereby enabling robust complementarity and cross-validation. The sensor's excellent performance makes it an ideal choice for applications such as voice recognition, gait analysis, and joint rehabilitation monitoring. This work establishes a platform for developing intelligent systems that combine machine-readable precision with human-interpretable feedback, catering to advanced medical and wearable devices.

A Flexible Bilayer Actuator Based on Liquid Crystal Network and PVDF–TrFE for Low-Grade Waste Heat Harvesting

Ying Han,Chunli Jiang,Hanmei Fu,Chunhua Luo,Hechun Lin,Hui Peng

Flexible low-grade waste heat generators are a promising device that can both recycle thermal energy and exhibit elasticity, are light weight, and have easily customized shapes. However, most thermal energy recovery technologies only work at large temperature gradients. Herein, a dynamic generator based on liquid crystal network (LCN) and poly(vinylidenedifluoride–trifluoroethylene) (PVDF–TrFE) is reported. The generator can operate in a temperature of ≈30 °C with a temperature difference of 6 K. LCN expands and shrinks in the temperature fluctuation, which is beneficial for PVDF–TrFE exposure to greater temperature changes. The device is found to exhibit a maximum output voltage of ≈4.5 mV based on pyroelectric and piezoelectric effect. This simple strategy may broaden applications of liquid crystalline actuators for harvesting low-grade waste heat.

Enhancing piezoelectric performance of PVDF-TrFE nanofiber sensors via PPy@BT doping for monitoring finger rehabilitation in Parkinson’s disease

He Liu,Zixu He,Chenbo Gong,Runyi Han,Zichen Qi,Lin Shi,Zhaohong Song,Fan Wang,Dong Wen,Zhaopeng Xu

To address the lack of non-invasive real-time monitoring of hand motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease, this study proposes a flexible piezoelectric sensor that detects electrical signal responses generated under different finger bending angles and frequencies, which can be used to monitor and evaluate finger motor function and rehabilitation training in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Moreover, the sensor maintains stable output over seven days and exhibits good biocompatibility. A doping strategy employing polypyrrole-coated BaTiO 3 (PPy@BT) nanoparticles is used to significantly enhance the piezoelectric performance of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) nanofiber sensors. PVDF-TrFE/PPy@BT composite nanofiber membranes are prepared by electrospinning and assembled into a flexible piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG). The microstructure, dielectric properties, mechanical, and piezoelectric performance of the composite are systematically characterized. Experimental results demonstrate that, under optimal doping conditions, the PENG exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 13.64 V, which corresponds to approximately 455% of the value of the undoped PVDF-TrFE membrane. Furthermore, the device maintains a stable output over 3000 cyclic loadings. The device achieves a maximum sensitivity of 39.34 V·kPa⁻ 1 in the low-pressure region (0–1 kPa) and delivers a peak power density of 0.32 W·m⁻ 2 at a load resistance of 10 8 Ω, demonstrating its excellent energy conversion efficiency.

Development of Highly Flexible Piezoelectric PVDF-TRFE/Reduced Graphene Oxide Doped Electrospun Nano-Fibers for Self-Powered Pressure Sensor

Arsalan Ahmed,Nazakat Ali Khoso,Muhammad Fahad Arain,Imran Ahmad Khan,Kashif Javed,Asfandyar Khan,Sanam Irum Memon,Qinguo Fan,Jianzhong Shao

The demand for self-powered, flexible, and wearable electronic devices has been increasing in recent years for physiological and biomedical applications in real-time detection due to their higher flexibility and stretchability. This work fabricated a highly sensitive, self-powered wearable microdevice with Poly-Vinylidene Fluoride-Tetra Fluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) nano-fibers using an electrospinning technique. The dielectric response of the polymer was improved by incorporating the reduced-graphene-oxide (rGO) multi-walled carbon nano-tubes (MWCNTs) through doping. The dielectric behavior and piezoelectric effect were improved through the stretching and orientation of polymeric chains. The outermost layer was attained by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of conductive polymer poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) to enhance the electrical conductivity and sensitivity. The hetero-structured nano-composite comprises PVDF-TrFE doped with rGO-MWCNTs over poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), forming continuous self-assembly. The piezoelectric pressure sensor is capable of detecting human physiological vital signs. The pressure sensor exhibits a high-pressure sensitivity of 19.09 kPa−1, over a sensing range of 1.0 Pa to 25 kPa, and excellent cycling stability of 10,000 cycles. The study reveals that the piezoelectric pressure sensor has superior sensing performance and is capable of monitoring human vital signs, including heartbeat and wrist pulse, masticatory movement, voice recognition, and eye blinking signals. The research work demonstrates that the device could potentially eliminate metallic sensors and be used for early disease diagnosis in biomedical and personal healthcare applications.

PANI/PVDF-TrFE porous aerogel bulk piezoelectric and triboelectric hybrid nanogenerator based on in-situ doping and liquid nitrogen quenching

Shengrui Yu,Yongkang Zhang,Zhaohan Yu,Jiaqi Zheng,Yunming Wang,Huamin Zhou

Limited by the inherent properties of being difficult to be polarized due to its high resistance, PVDF bulk material with high β-phase content is hard to obtain by conventional methods which are suitable for membrane material. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed for the mass production of high-performance β-PVDF-based piezoelectric and triboelectric hybrid nanogenerator (PTNG) employing large-scale PVDF films or bulks by using liquid nitrogen to induce a phase transition and in-situ doped conductive polyaniline (PANI). Polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) with high piezoelectric coefficient , filled with PANI as a conductive material and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC) for increasing porosity, is hot pressed to obtain a composite piezoelectric polymer for PTNG. The subsequent “quenching” process of the piezoelectric polymer allows its high content of β-phase, which in turn makes the PTNG exhibit excellent piezoelectric properties . The optimal output of the PTNG, with a β-phase content of up to 71%, reaches 246 V and 122 μA at the frequency of 30 Hz and pressure of 0.31 MPa, and the power density is calculated to be 6.69 W/m 2 . Moreover, the PTNG can directly light up 119 blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a size of 3 mm in series. The excellent performance verifies the reliability and accuracy of the method, that is, the β-phase transformation of disordered amorphous PVDF occurs at low temperature and high-rate quenching, and PANI opens the channel for carriers to move charge in the bulk material. This innovative method presented here is a simple and efficient approach for preparation of bulks with high β-phase and low internal resistance, which undoubtedly provides a feasible direction for the industrialization of high-performance PENGs.
