Truncated aptamer-regulated Pd@CeO2 NPs nanozyme activity for colorimetric detection of clenbuterol hydrochloride

Nina Zhao,Xue Cheng,Yu Li,Shuaishuai Wei,Zhouping Wang

Clenbuterol hydrochloride (CLB) is prohibited for use in food-producing animals due to its associated health risks, necessitating the urgent development of facile, highly sensitive on-site detection methods. In this study, a truncated aptamer (C40, Kd = 90.29 nM) with high affinity for CLB was obtained via rational truncation guided by molecular docking. Based on this aptamer, a novel colorimetric aptasensor was constructed, operating on the principle of regulating the peroxidase-mimetic activity of Pd@CeO 2 NPs nanozymes through the aptamer. After the C40 aptamer was adsorbed onto the surface of Pd@CeO 2 NPs via electrostatic interactions, its catalytic activity was significantly suppressed. In the presence of CLB, the specific binding between the aptamer and CLB triggered the dissociation of the aptamer from the nanozyme surface, thereby restoring the catalytic activity and generating a strong colorimetric signal in the TMB-H 2 O 2 chromogenic system. Under the optimized conditions, the aptasensor exhibited a wide linear detection range for CLB from 0.01 to 1000 ng/mL, with a limit of detection as low as 8.2 pg/mL, and demonstrated high specificity against structural analogs and other common interferents. In spiked pork samples, the recovery rates of the developed aptasensor ranged from 98.7% to 101%, with relative standard deviations below 4.69%, outperforming commercial ELISA kits. The strategy of “rational truncation of aptamers for regulating nanozyme activity” provided a new avenue for developing high-performance biosensors targeting small molecules.

Enhanced low-temperature CO oxidation activity through crystal facet engineering of Pd/CeO2 catalysts

Jing He,Xiao Yang,Zehui Zhu,Xue Luo,Cai-e Wu,Yan Cui,Qingzhi Ge,Jian Qiu,Leilei Xu,Mindong Chen

Cerium dioxide (CeO 2 ) supported palladium (Pd) catalysts have found widespread application in CO oxidation reaction owing to their exceptional catalytic performance. The morphology of the CeO 2 support dictates the exposed crystal plane, exerting a profound influence on surface structure and redox properties. This is crucial as the atomic arrangement at the surface directly impacts catalytic activity. In this study, a range of CeO 2 supports with diverse morphologies ( e.g. nano-octahedra, nano-cubes, nano-particles, nano-spheres, and nano-rods) were successfully synthesized through hydrothermal methods and subsequently supported with Pd for CO oxidation. The spherical 1Pd/CeO 2 –S catalyst, revealing exposed (111) + (100) crystal planes, exhibited significantly higher CO catalytic oxidation activity compared to the catalysts with other morphological CeO 2 supports. The results indicated a positive correlation between the content of Pd x Ce 1-x O 2-y species and catalytic activity. Notably, this species was most abundantly formed in the spherical 1Pd/CeO 2 –S catalyst with exposed (111) + (100) crystal planes. The presence of this active species facilitated the formation of surface defects , increased oxygen vacancy concentration, and enhanced metal-support interaction, consequently greatly improving the CO low-temperature catalytic oxidation activity. Consequently, the oxidation state of Pd in the Pd/CeO 2 catalyst could be effectively regulated by controlling the exposure of (111) + (100) crystalline surfaces of the CeO 2 support, further optimizing the catalytic performance of the Pd/CeO 2 catalytic system.

Enhanced durability of Pd/CeO2-C via metal-support interaction for oxygen reduction reaction

Xinbiao Mao,Mingyu Ou,Wenjun Zhao,Meiqin Shi,Lingxia Zheng

It is a challenge to improve the long-term durability of Pd-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. Herein, Pd/CeO2-C-T (T=800, 900 and 1000℃) hybrid catalysts with metal-support interaction are prepared from Ce-based metal organic framework (Ce-MOF) precursor. Abundant tiny CeO2 nanoclusters are produced to form nanorod structures with uniformly distributed carbon through a calcination process. Meanwhile, both carbon and CeO2 nanoclusters have good contact with the following deposited surfactant-free Pd nanoclusters. Benefited from the large specific surface area, good conductivity and structure integrity, Pd/CeO2-C-900 exhibits the best electrocatalytic ORR performance: onset potential of 0.968 V and half-wave potential of 0.857 V, outperforming those obtained on Pd/C counterpart. In addition, the half-wave potential only shifts 7 mV after 6000 cycles of accelerated durability testing, demonstrating robust durability.

Hydrogen Spillover-Enabled Pd/CeO2 Interface Catalysis for Highly Efficient Electrochemical Nitrate-to-Ammonia Conversion

Mengjie Xu,Min Hao,Jing Yu,Junfeng Du,Shuai Zhang,Haibin Chu,Yaping Du

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) provides a sustainable route for nitrogen pollution remediation and ammonia production under ambient conditions. However, the process involves sluggish multi-electron/proton transfer and suffers from competing hydrogen evolution (HER) which severely limits efficiency and selectivity. Herein, we construct a Pd x -CeO 2 /C composite catalyst, in which strong interactions between Pd and CeO 2 induce interfacial electronic redistribution, thereby effectively modulating the Pd electronic structure. This interfacial coupling enhances water dissociation, accelerates the generation of reactive *H, and promotes its spillover from Pd to CeO 2 . In-situ attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) confirms that hydrogen spillovers facilitate stepwise hydrogenation of intermediates while suppressing HER. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that Pd-Ce interactions inhibit HER and enable N─O side-on adsorption, shifting the potential-determining step and lowering the reaction barrier, thus boosting electrocatalytic activity. As a result, the optimized 5 wt.% Pd-CeO 2 /C delivers a Faradaic efficiency of 98.0% for ammonia at −0.4 V (vs. RHE), and achieves an ammonia yield rate of 4.17 mmol/(mg Pd ∙h) at −0.6 V. This work offers new insights into the application of interfacial engineering for efficient electrocatalytic ammonia synthesis.

Hollow Structure and Electron Promotion Effect of Mesoporous Pd/CeO2 Catalyst for Enhanced Catalytic Hydrogenation

Qinhong Wei,Qingxiang Ma,Pingping Zuo,Huailin Fan,Shijie Qu,Wenzhong Shen

Graphical Hollow hydrogenation : A hollow CeO 2 spheres supported metallic Pd catalyst was prepared by employing a glucose hydrothermal method and impregnation method. The Pd/CeO 2 hollow sphere catalyst, which consisted of a hollow cavity and outer shell, presented a higher catalytic hydrogenation performance of styrene and nitrobenzene to produce ethylbenzene and aniline, better than that of the general CeO 2 -supported Pd catalyst. A hollow structured CeO 2 spheres supported metallic Pd catalyst (Pd/CeO 2 -H) was designed and prepared by a glucose hydrothermal method and impregnation method. The CeO 2 -H consisted of an inner hollow cavity and an outer shell on which a large number of mesopores were formed. The Pd/CeO 2 -H hollow sphere catalyst, which presented abundant surface oxygen vacancies, was investigated for catalytic hydrogenations of styrene and nitrobenzene to produce ethylbenzene and aniline. Activity tests indicated that the mesoporous Pd/CeO 2 -H hollow sphere catalyst exhibited striking catalytic activity, which was attributed to the spatial core–shell structure that provided more active sites and facilitated reactant diffusion as well as surface defects (oxygen vacancies), which were capable of transferring electrons to metallic Pd. All of these advances are beneficial to give a higher catalytic hydrogenation performance.

Ternary synergistic interaction of Pd/CeO2-C3N4 catalyst promoting transfer hydrogenation of nitro compounds to amines

Yakai Chen,Xinya Feng,Xiaohan Yu,Xingliang Xu,Jing Xu

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of nitro compounds to amines under mild conditions offers an alternative strategy to traditional hydrogenation processes involving pressurized molecular hydrogen, which necessitate the rational design and integration of multifunctional catalyst. Herein, a ternary composite catalyst (Pd/CeO 2 -C 3 N 4 ) was designed and synthesized for the transfer hydrogenation of nitro compounds to corresponding amines compounds using formic acid as hydrogen donor. The Pd/CeO 2 -C 3 N 4 catalyst shows remarkably high performance for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of nitrobenzene (NB) to aniline (BA), achieving > 98 % conversion and exceedingly high selectivity (>99 %). The catalyst exhibits a high turnover frequency (TOF) of up to 2868 h - , significantly surpassing both the reference catalyst (Pd/C 3 N 4 and Pd/CeO 2 ) and the conventional Pd/C catalyst. The multi-functional Pd/CeO 2 -C 3 N 4 catalyst features enhanced electron transfer properties,well-exposed Pd active sites, and abundant acid-base sites, enabling effective enhancement of formic acid dehydrogenation and nitro group activation. Moreover, Pd/CeO 2 -C 3 N 4 demonstrates excellent recyclability and a broad substrate scope for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of various nitro compounds. The rational design of Pd/CeO 2 -C 3 N 4 will broaden the application range of Pd-based catalysts and provide a sustainable and effective approach for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of other industrially relevant organic compounds.

Fabrication of Pd/CeO2 nanocubes as highly efficient catalysts for degradation of formaldehyde at room temperature

Yafeng Chen,Guimin Jiang,Xiangzhi Cui,Zuotai Zhang,Xinmei Hou

Eliminating indoor formaldehyde (HCHO) pollution at room temperature is highly needed to improve the environment while saving energy. Herein, Pd/CeO2 catalysts with different morphologies of the CeO2 support were employed to investigate their performance for HCHO oxidation. The Pd/CeO2 nanocube (Pd/CeO2-C) catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity compared to commercial CeO2 and CeO2 nanorods. HCHO can be completely converted into CO2 and H2O over the Pd/CeO2-C (0.64 wt% Pd) catalyst at a weight hourly space velocity of 36 000 mL g−1 h−1 at room temperature. Multiple characterization results confirmed that the strong interfacial interaction between Pd and the CeO2-C support guarantees a high percentage of metallic Pd on the CeO2-C surface and its high dispersion, which is crucial for the oxidation of formaldehyde at low temperature. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform results indicated that CO, formate and dioxymethylene species are the main intermediates over the Pd/CeO2-C catalyst, and the active O species is responsible for their decomposition and oxidation. This work may promote the practical application of high performance Pd-based catalysts for indoor HCHO purification and related catalytic processes.

Polymer-templated synthesis of hollow Pd–CeO2 nanocomposite spheres and their catalytic activity and thermal stability

Chenhao Du,Yun Guo,Yanglong Guo,Xue-qing Gong,Guanzhong Lu

Developing methods for the fabrication of active and thermally stable noble metal/metal oxide nanomaterials are very important for catalysis and material fields. Herein, we used a polymer-template synthesis approach to prepare hollow Pd–CeO2 nanocomposite spheres (NCSs) with Pd nanoparticles evenly distributed inside the CeO2 shell, in which the aggregation of Pd nanoparticles can be well inhibited with the help of the protection of CeO2 nanocrystallites even after being calcined at 700 °C. The Pd nanoparticles are partially buried in the CeO2 shell and the surface Pd species are highly ionic, which is caused by the electron exchange at the Pd–CeO2 interface during calcination. This hollow structure Pd–CeO2 nanocatalyst shows excellent catalytic activity and stability in the aqueous selective reduction of 4-nitrophenol and gaseous CO oxidation. For the selective reduction of 4-nitrophenol, the reaction rate of this h-Pd–CeO2 NCS catalyst compared to those of the supported Pd/CeO2 and physically mixed Pd + CeO2 catalysts is almost 14 times and 5 times faster, respectively. For the CO oxidation, the larger Pd–CeO2 interface in h-Pd–CeO2 NCSs could facilitate the reaction between the adsorbed CO and O2, thus showing better low temperature activity. This paper emphasizes the advantages of a core–shell hollow structure and provides a new way for obtaining novel functional nanocatalysts.

Pd@CeO2 core-shell heteronanostructures with enhanced multienzyme activity for macrophage polarization and in flammation alleviation

Yanting Zhan,Yiyang Wu,Chanting Huang,Siyi Liu,Ke Ma,Li Zheng,Zainen Qin

The high expression of classically activated macrophages (M1) subtypes and the elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are specifically observed in osteoarthritis (OA) patients. In this study, we synthesized a Pd@CeO2 nanozyme with a core-shell hetero-nanostructure that enhances enzyme activity through shell-core electron transfer. The goal of this work was to look into the potential of Pd@CeO2 nanozyme in scavenging ROS and regulating macrophages for the treatment of OA. The results demonstrated that the Pd@CeO2 nanozyme displayed multiple enzyme-like antioxidative activities, efficiently eliminating excessive intracellular ROS. This resulted in a significant decrease in the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, consequently leading to a decline in the presence of M1-type macrophages. Furthermore, the Pd@CeO2 nanozyme showed excellent potential in promoting the shift of macrophages toward the M2 phenotype. Additionally, the factors secreted from the cell supernatant of Pd@CeO2-treated macrophages treated with Pd@CeO2 demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in the chondrocytes located within inflamed synovial joints. These findings offer valuable insights into the advancement of effective enzyme-mimetic therapies for the treatment of OA.

Insights into the Influence of CeO2 Crystal Facet on CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol over Pd/CeO2 Catalysts

Feng Jiang,Shanshan Wang,Bing Liu,Jie Liu,Li Wang,Yang Xiao,Yuebing Xu,Xiaohao Liu

CeO2 is an excellent potential material for CO2 hydrogenation attributed to the highly tunable properties including metal–support interaction and abundant oxygen vacancy. In this work, four CeO2 supports with structurally well-defined different shapes and crystal facets are hydrothermally prepared, and their effects on the composition of Pd species and oxygen vacancy over Pd/CeO2 catalysts have been intensively investigated in the reduction of CO2 to methanol. The 2Pd/CeO2-R (rods) shows the highest concentration and number of oxygen vacancies, where the (110) facet with high surface oxygen mobility and low oxygen vacancy formation energy is exposed over the CeO2-R surface. The oxygen mobility at the interface of (111) and (100) facets mainly observed on 2Pd/CeO2-P (polyhedrons) is higher than the single (111) and (100) facets mainly observed on 2Pd/CeO2-O (octahedrons) and 2Pd/CeO2-C (cubs), respectively. The presence of Pd highly promotes the formation of oxygen vacancies by providing dissociated H atoms to facilitate the removal of surface O in ceria support under a H2 atmosphere. Both the PdxCe1–xOδ solid solution dominated on CeO2-R and the PdO species dominated on CeO2-O are reduced to metallic Pd after reduction with 6–10 nm average particle size. As revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, in contrast to the single Pd0 atom on CeO2 and the thermodynamically most unstable PdxCe1−xOδ solid solution, the Pd0 nanoparticles are the most stable species under the realistic reaction conditions. The 2Pd/CeO2-R shows the highest catalytic activity as the abundantly available oxygen vacancies function as CO2 adsorption and activation sites. Moreover, oxygen vacancy reactivity is correlated with its formation energy. The lower formation energy facilitates the formation of oxygen vacancy; however, the reactivity of each oxygen vacancy is lower as the TOFoxygen vacancy of 2Pd/CeO2-O is 15 times as that of 2Pd/CeO2-R. Thus, a suitable oxygen vacancy formation energy is likely favorable for enhancing CO2 reactivity. DFT calculations indicate that the CH3OH formation is most probably from the formate (HCOO*) pathway via the C–O bond cleavage in H2COOH*, with the reduction of HCOO* to HCOOH* as the rate-limiting step. These results would provide experimental and theoretical insights into the rational design of an effective catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation.

Core-shell Pd@CeO2/γ‐Al2O3 catalysts: Boosting efficiency and durability in stoichiometric natural gas vehicle exhaust treatment

Run Pan,Abubakar Yusuf,Chengjun Wang,Jianrong Li,Zhiyu Xiao,Shuai Liu,Yidong Zhong,Yong Ren,Zheng Wang,Hainam Do,John L. Zhou,George Zheng Chen,Jun He

Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) offer significant environmental advantages by reducing pollutant emissions, but effective exhaust treatment remains a challenge due to high methane emissions and catalyst deactivation over time. This study introduces a core-shell Pd@CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 three-way catalyst (TWC) designed to enhance the efficiency and durability of NGV exhaust treatment. The core-shell structure significantly improves catalytic performance. The optimized Pd@Ce/Al (S-500) catalyst demonstrates excellent low-temperature activity, with T 50 values of 336 °C for CH 4 and 397 °C for NO. It also achieves remarkable reductions of 113 and 177 °C in the T 90 for CH 4 and NO conversion, respectively, compared to the non-core-shell counterpart, Pd-Ce/Al (S-500). Characterizations reveal enhanced metal-support interactions, increased oxygen vacancies, and optimized Pd-CeO 2 interfaces as key active sites. Density functional theory calculations further demonstrate that the core-shell structure facilitates electron transfer at Pd-CeO 2 interfaces and lowers energy barriers for three-way reactions, enhancing catalytic efficiency. Notably, the core-shell Pd@Ce/Al (S-500) catalyst maintains high conversion efficiency for CH 4 and NO, with only slight losses (5.5% and 6.6%, respectively) over a 100-h time-on-stream stability test, following 16 h of harsh hydrothermal aging at 800 °C, showcasing its long-term stability. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the role of the core-shell Pd@CeO 2 structure in Pd-based TWCs and offer valuable insights for designing durable and efficient catalysts to meet the stringent emission standards of NGVs.

Enhancement of Methanol Oxidation Performance Over Pd/CeO2 Derived from MOF and Mechanism Investigation via In Situ Studies

Yue Yihang,Li Yong,Wang Tingting,Wang Shifeng,Han Lin,Du Chun

A Pd/CeO 2 -M with high methanol oxidation performance was prepared from metal–organic framework (MOF). The reaction results indicate that the Pd/CeO 2 -M could achieve 100% methanol oxidation at 200 °C over the traditional Pd/CeO 2 -C at 350 °C. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman show that the Pd was uniformly distributed over the CeO 2 that was rich in oxygen vacancies. The methanol temperature program surface reaction (MeOH-TPSR) demonstrates that the Pd/CeO 2 -M could effectively decompose methanol at a lower temperature with the assistance of oxygen vacancies compared with Pd/CeO 2 -C. Methanol oxidation was conducted with in-situ Raman, CO diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transformed spectroscopy (CO-DRIFTS) and in-situ DRIFTS to elucidate the reaction mechanism and establish the structure–activity relationship. The oxygen vacancies have participated in the assistance of methanol oxidation, which was revealed via in-situ Raman. The CO-DRIFTS indicates that the chemisorbed CO was more in linear form, which demonstrates that the Pd particles were over CeO 2 -M with a smaller size. The in-situ DRIFTS experiments show the methanol could be further effectively oxidized to bidentate formate over Pd/CeO 2 -M with the assistance of oxygen vacancies. The Pd/CeO 2 -M catalysis and its enhancement mechanism studies provided a potential strategy in the VOC removal catalysis development. Graphical Abstract
